I've been going through your Unreal tutorials and absolutely love them, from the simple, comprehensive explanations to the affable northern accent and spatterings of humour. Thought I'd check out Maya so I randomly googled tutorials and this popped up - I got this stupid grin on my face the moment I realised it was you and I instantly realised how much I was going to enjoy this tutorial.

Siber try zooming in further, usually when you cant click inside objects its because its actually selecting the outer object (the room). Even though the front walls can't be seen, they can still be selected. Just zoom as far in as possible and see if you can select it there.

or you can press "4" for wireframe view, this will accurately select the object you are clicking, even if zoomed out and inside another object. to get back to normal view, press 5 on keyboard.

This is great, one thing for the 2019 version, is to DBL click the select tool pointer and enable camera-based selection, or you wont be able to select objects inside the room unless you zoom in past the invisible outer walls of the original "ROOM" cube.

    • @TheKissimRunners
      @TheKissimRunners 5 лет назад

I've found that enabling Automatic camera-based selection to be quite handy since it automatically toggles it when in shaded/wireframe. Just my two cents since at 37:38 the back vertices were not selecting for me!

After 13 years of working in the veterinary field and finally getting burnt out, I decided that I needed to pursue something new in life. Something that I loved and could see myself doing until the end of times. And by end of times, I mean death. My death, to be more precise. Anyway, long story short, I settled on 3D modeling and design. Initially and for the longest time, I was as lost as a cat with its head stuck in a Cheez-It box that its owner was standing in the corner laughing at and filming for all of the internet world to see, and I wanted to give up. I was contemplating going back to my eternal and apparently inescapable future in the dog/cat world. Then somebody on Reddit mentioned your RUclips channel, which led to this video, which absolutely changed my life. I kid not. A couple months later, and I am 3D-modeling like a crazy man riding the Tropical Skittles rainbow. I am doing things with Maya I never thought I'd be capable of, and it all started right here. This is paws down the best Maya beginner's tutorial video on the planet of Earth, and I don't doubt that it has inspired many more like myself. So I guess all I'm really trying to say is...well, thank you. Your ability to educate and retain the viewer's focus is absolutely gold, and the added bonus of your awesome personality/humor is a breath of fresh air compared to any other tutorial any of us will ever find by anyone else. Ever. Cheers, and I look forward to the future of your channel.

Same here man, I'm 29, been working as a web developer/programmer for 6 years, I know very little about 3D modeling, I have no skills at all in drawing, but I decided to leave programming for good to pursue a career as a 3d environment artist... Hope I don't starve to death, but I don't care about money now, I don't wanna spend my days looking at the clock, waiting for the time to leave work, and looking for the weekends, had enough, I'd rather starve by doing something I love

Way better than so many of these 'intro' tutorials which spend 30 mins + going through tons of set-up stuff, this option, that option, blah blah blah.

    Wow! Thanks a lot!
I've been the reckless "Trial & Error" kinda dude when I learned using Maya, which resulted in insanely uneven knowledge and skills, which of course later on made it harder to patiently go through all the basic tutorials and info, that mainly consists of what I already know, in order to fill the endless amounts of small gaps that are missing some very essential info.
Your tutorial is perfect. The stuff I already knew got fleshed out from great pointers on how to improve the workflow on that same knowledge, which in turn helped me to finally stay interested in following intently and voila: there came those small but essential pieces I have been previously missing.
Great presentation, pace and detail. Great job!
Gonna have to remember this clip when I can afford to donate. People like you DESERVE to make a living via RUclips.
Until then, my like has to suffice.

If anyone noticed that the control panel was the wrong way around, you will need to go into "place2dTexture" and muck around with the "Rotate Frame" if it needs to be rotated and if the image needs to be flipped, in "Repeat UV", the second box should be -1.

I am only 14 years old and Iv'e been watching videos about animation, editing and all sorts since I was somewhere between the age of 12 and 13 and I have got to say, this is THE best tutorial I have ever seen. I would love to be an animator one day or probably a motion designer and all that but what I can point out here is that this video has really been a stepping up stone for me. Since I basically spent a year self-studying photoshop, premiere pro, flash and most of the adobe editing softwares, I decided to take on my next step which is to study 3D animation. Maya is so far the only 3D editing Software I have today and at first I thought of giving up since I had a hard time familiarizing the interface but then I found your video and it got me to understand during your tutorial. I love it! Thank you for this video! I appreciate all your time and effort for this. Truly, this is Amazing! SUBSCRIBED and liked! I am having a pretty strange issue which I do not understand. When assigning pillarM to pillar the dirt is only assigned to part of the pillar, leaving two faces without dirt. I have recreated the material several times, rewatched the section of the video where you create it AND recreated the pillar and gotten the same results. It can of course be fixed by going into UV but I wonder why I have this issue in the first place and what I might be doing wrong
    thanks for answers anyone :)
EDIT: when I assigned material to crates it wrapped around them and I had to fix them by UV. Annoying, since in the video this is not necessary. What am I doing wrong? seriously.
EDIT: OK so normalize was turned on. hahah... for some reason it only stuck for one of the boxes. Now I have to recreate the whole scene or go around changing UVs. well I leave this here if anyone has the same problem
Had same issue with floor even after turning off normalize and recreating the room. Only solution I find is scaling the UV up to fit the texture. This seems odd..

Uhmmmmmm... I hope you'll notice this comment.
I am using Maya 2018. Using the higher quality renderer (from the results), arnold render.
Light seems to be very dark, i searched online for help, found some, but aren't very useful.
They basically told me to increase light exposure on arnold settings.
But one thing it can't fix, the light doesn't pass through the sun. But on the maya 2.0 renderer, it works just perfectly.
Are there any solution to this problem?
Because i think the Arnold render has way better result than the default 2.0 renderer, so I would want to possibly use Arnold renderer rather than the default 2.0
    Thanks in advance :)

My lights are significantly darker than yours here and the lightfog does not show up at all. I'm using 2017; is there something obvious which might be the cause? I have to put the Intensity up above 1 and cannot using quadratic decay on anything or it almost disappears. I have tried looking for the solution to this problem. I have recreated both the light sources, and even created a new project and created them there, but it has the same effect of being much darker. This makes me think there is some setting or something which has changed in the 2017 version or something which I have inadvertently changed.
    Any ideas?

I didn't knew what to expect.. But what I got was amazing! Holy cube, you just hit the learning thing spot on! I was really enjoying this tutorial! Often when I watch tutorials I skip parts but I didn't do that once watching this video! Not to fast and Never too slow. I really like the red line and the tempo, the 'Now you do it' moments. I've learned a lot, thank you! Keep up the great work!

You are simply SO GOOD! I was postponing 3D modelling for years, because I was afraid to not understand anything (like I had this issue with programming), but you are soo easy to understand, always cheering up and have such a good pronunciation that I could not resist to walk by this course!
    In short: Totally awesome!
Definetily sending you some money :)

Best Beginner Tutorial on 3D-Design/Maya i saw in a loooong time. It's not that there are none available, nothing could be further from the truth.
But you posses a skill set which nearly all of the other Educators in those videos lack. They're surely full of professional wisdom and quite the experts, but you can actually teach.
You have a calm voice, you use the right order and most importantly you know exactly how much to explain. Just the things really needed to understand and not ramble on which eventually results in your students loss of focus. But all in it whats needed to get an understanding. Everything is logically and elegantly structured, plus the pace is absolutely on the spot.
i landed here while brushing up on 3D-Modelling, which i have left for a long time (outside of a few game engine editors, my last modeler was Caligari TrueSpace 7.x :D yeah, i know...) and i figured i could combine it with finally getting into Maya (which i was planing for also quite some time). I'm working in my spare-time on a little game project in UE4, mainly for fun. And after fiddling around with the engine and getting accustomed to its mechanics and programming, i now enter the creative phase. Instantly the need for a real modeler arose and i'm not on good terms with blender (dunno why, it just didn't appeal to me...despite being a great piece of Software).
Your video actually helped me to understand Maya's work flow/basics in a breeze and after it i had everything to continue onward alone building on my previous and a bit rusted experience in 3D Graphics, i fortunately do not need to start from the very beginning. Now I'm up to speed and actually entered the creative part being sufficiently comfortable in Mayan to enjoy working with it.
I would really like to thank you for that and give you credit for your really exceptional education skills!! I have never in my life understood a new topic as fast and intuitive, as i did while watching this video. Great Stuff....never stop educating ;)
    Cheers ,Steven

+Ess Ell you are very kind Steven. I'm glad I could help you get back into modelling and into learning Maya. I do have some other videos that you might find useful if you're creating game art (the barrel is good for normal map baking) and I have also started covering the art side of UE4.
I wish you all the best with your game project and your continued learning.

it's just my honest opinion...and being intrigued with 3D Graphics and games for my whole live since i laid my fingers on a Commodore 64 i saw and read my fair share of manuals, tutorials etc., i have rarely stumbled upon people who not only have the knowledge but actually can transport it... this is my fifth youtube comments i posted, which is not my cup of tea, but this really left an very good impression on me. So i had to tell you... I will surely check the videos and barrel which you mentioned! I'm not developing games with commercial intend, i just wanted to build my own worlds since giana sisters and the same feeling never faded. I solely do it as a hobby or personal pleasure :) This time i decided to put everything from all those years together and being a big fan of the Persona series i decided to make my own sequel and transport/translate it into my hometown. That was also a big wish of mine...a game set in my hometown Aachen...So it will take a long time, but the groundwork in dozens of sites in concept is ready and i really look forward to the creation, the whole experience....Best wishes to you and again nice Job!

After 3 days I finally got enough time to complete this tutorial, I gotta say this was the most indepth tutorial and the guy didnt skip anything. I'm using maya 2018 so there were some things I had to figure out on my own but for the most part this tutorial saved me from giving up on my 3d modeling dreams lol. I also found the instructor very entertaining
