Every now and then, I get really nostalgic about the old tech tv days. This show is really comforting to me. I guess the tech news is ok too 😉

Patrick, the physical AppleCard is only to use when ApplePay is not available. So that's why it appears there is no need for any numbers, you would just enter PIN. It is therefore not designed to use online you would again use ApplePay.

Rebooting your modem automagically on a schedule is easy - just plug it into a cheap smart plug and program whatever behavior you like, such as power cycling every Thursday and Sunday morning at 3 AM.

@TekThing , @ 9:00 , Every time you restart an iOS device it dumps the nvram and makes room. Even having tabs open in a browser that isn't even running is taking up memory and slowing you down. A lot of people usually don't think about that , they think because the app is closed its not using memory. If you have 10 tabs open in firefox it has to remember those tabs and reload them when you launch the app. Always make sure no applications are running in the background, make sure there are no saved processes in those apps even if they aren't officially running. Generally every few days make sure to reboot your device, its just good practice. This goes for Android and Apple, for Apple users----> ***In order to clean up your RAM its the same process for devices older than the iPhone 8 , hold down the sleep/wake button until you get the slider that gives you the option to power off your device. Then instead of powering it down hold down the home button, you should see the screen blink a few times and then return to the home screen. At this point you have manually cleared the nvram on your iOS device iPhone/iPad/iPod , all work the same. Maybe reboot for good measure. For devices newer than the iPhone 8 First, you will need to turn on Assistive Touch. Then go to settings > general > accessibility > assistive touch and toggle assistive touch on. A gray and white button will appear on the screen.
Next, return to the General page in your Settings app. Scroll down to the bottom of the general menu and tap Shut Down. At this point you'll be at your slider again to power off, but dont! Now hit the Assistive Touch button and hold down the 'Home button' , till yet AGAIN the screen flashes, then it will bring you back to your home screen and the process is complete. This wont effect any applications you have running or anything saved to your internal memory, everything should run noticeably faster. So is it good idea to restart your phone, I conclude yes, if it's done automatically on a schedule even better. With Android dont use cleaner apps, battery saver apps, ram boosting apps, they all actually take up more space and memory than they create. Yeah sure some deleted apps can leave behind data but you can manually do this by managing your storage , going to cache and then clearing it. You can also individually go through the applications to clear the cache. I like to clear what I can manually, delete bloatware apps if possible. If there are apps you can't delete stopping them will also free up memory. Cleaner and booster apps can also actually slow your device down because of the way it interacts with the low level of the OS in the kernel. I say bring on the Librem Phone, cant wait , it will be the closest I think we will ever come to actually owning our devices. Unless they release an open hardware/ open software phone/tablet. I think if the Purism phone does as good as is projected we may see a tablet from them soon if it isn't already in the works. The phone itself is designed to be used with a docking station turning your phone into a full fledged Linux Computer. Even if the specs are significantly lower than most flagship phones/tablets, the functionality of a device running gnu PureOS would far outweigh the benefits of having hardware thats higher end, at least in my eyes 👀📲💻👍👌

Not to be the dude that says "Android did it First", but I really miss the Google Wallet card, yes the actual physical card. Maybe it's because they couldn't get the backing of a huge financial institution, but it's one of the killedbygoogle things I miss the convenience of the most. Paypal and Venmo have done well to fill this void.

Oh - please don't send photos via email, Google Drive, Dropbox or similar - use something like Google Photos for that. It's much easier to handle that use case there and if you're fine with their high quality setting, you get virtually unlimited space.

Patrick, been watching you since the early days of the screensavers. So glad you're still producing content. Honestly surprised you're not more popular on here. I mean I guess you could do what people like Linus do and try to split videos up into 11-15min segments, each based on one topic.. But personally I'm just fine with this format.
By the way, shannon is the perfect person you could do this show with.

I actually appreciate this format. Its long enough where I can just leave it on in the background like the morning news while I get ready in the morning. Linus is on the opposite of the spectrum, puts out a video for every little thing, I guess I can just use the autoplay feature.

20:55 I use IPFS to share files with my friends. I just give them cloudflare webgateway with my ipfs hash. Of course the files are basically public this way as it uses the p2p decentralized network to propagate the file. you can, however, encrypt it before sending. Also the other person would have to know the hash value of the file you are sharing. which I am guessing is probably visible to ppl though which nodes your file is currently going though. The main advantage of this is that no one owns this as its decentralized.

I for sure restart my phones (iPhone8+ and Pixel 3XL) Sunday evening/night after verifying there's no app/os updates that didn't automatically get applied. I know I don't need to do it (the restart, updates are always good) but I got into the habit with older phones and it doesn't hurt so...
My Win boxen are restarted about every week or two. It's combination of old habits and I do experience weird issues on my gaming desktop if I don't...
Everything else (network equipment, nas, linux boxen, etc) only when I'm experiencing an issue with them. It's rare though since there's typically an update that either forces or recommends a restart before I start having issues.

Security is obviously a main selling point, and to that end Apple is presenting a slew of features and capabilities unique to its platform. The card itself lacks any identifying markings, including a card number or traditional CVV. As can be expected, the physical card does have a number encoded into its magnetic stripe, but users will not have access to that information. Instead, the corresponding virtual card in the Wallet app only displays the last four digits of a user's personal account number.
When making purchases that require recitation of a card number, the app generates a virtual number and CVV. This process can be repeated manually if a user so chooses.

Catching upon episodes. It is weird, after the CES coverage, they produced 10 additional episodes of the show, but only around 4 of them ended up in my subscription feed. Why can't youtube fix their subscription feature already. how hard is it for them to find developers that can figure out a way to make the subscription function list all of the new content from all of the channels you subscribe to, in chronological order? It may not be easy for them, but I am sure if google invested the money and time needed to get a team of people working on that issue, they will get a return on investment.
PS, this is not an issue with this channel, because if I use a youtube account associated with my work gmail account, I get a different set of content in the feed. It just feels random, where some weeks I will get everything, and others I will only get some.
