    Brother if you used something like Unraid, you would only need to allot 1 drive to parity. Freeing up the rest of your drives. You could then put them into a pool, so for example if you dropped a 1tb file onto the smb share it would equally divide it across the drives. Tldr, you could have 1 drive as parity covering your whole array and still fast speeds.

      So Asustor ADM can do raid 5 as well as 6, but I did raid 6 cuz it's my first NAS and I'm scared.
      I also bought remanufactured drives, they've worked great so far, but I had no idea what my failures would be like.
      That said, the speeds are good once they spin up. Spin up time seems to be the main (no the only, but main) disadvantage vs ssds for editing over the asustor.

    I especially liked when the 3.5” HDD was dropped and auto-magically turned into a 2.5” HDD before hitting the ground. Spooky,……….

    i head from this lady that now no longer are you necessarily keeping those private files in some file cabinet thats locked in the basement of the house. its on your laptop and its then therefore up here in this cloud that exists above us, Right?
