    Nice job. It seems that as far as quality of image it's probably not worth the effort to use the Atomos. I would disagree with your comment on not needing the external waveform, having used the Panny waveform, it is much easier to read the external monitor's waveform, much easier to pull focus. There are other features that make it useful, but it's great to get validation that you *can* shoot with the internal codec and not worry about image quality loss. I've also found that my slightly older computer handles the ProRes better than the internal codec, especially my laptop. Smoother flow on playback, etc. Thanks for your efforts on showing us the keying differences!

      Sorry for the late reply. I really appreciate the comment. We did end up getting a SmallHD FOCUS, for many of the reasons you listed.

    While there may not be a huge quality difference there are a few reasons why I enjoy mine. The biggest being the fact that it records 4K Pro Res straight to an SSD. This means that I don't have to transcode the GH5's painful to edit codec and can edit the footage right off the Atoms drive. No need to transfer any files or worry about proxies. Massive reduction in edit time. Secondly it's a beautiful field monitor with many viewing options (albeit thicker than most). And lastly the 10 bit 4:2:2 slow-motion at 1080p is great for editing. While 60p at 4K is nice it's not quite slow enough for most of my "stylized" shots.

      Not to mention being able to use the Ninja Inferno OR Flame to see what your LUT will look like (in real time) when shooting in V-LogL on the GH4/5. Also, you can burn the LUT into the recording if you want. Again, potentially saving one TONS of time in post and minimizing your workflow.

    • @maxneufeldt9152
      @maxneufeldt9152 6 лет назад +1

      Well, the GH5 can use a .vlt file for live LUT previewing, thankfully. Agreed re: the benefits of LUT burn-in (going from 9.X bits to 10 bits as well).

    Well. Maybe you don't benefit from the codec or bigger screen but folks. SDHC cards for 4K 400mbps are extremly expensive. It's a save of cost when recording directly to SSD. Try record 2h of footage with SDHC cards or on the go, swaping cards, youll notice that in a price of those cards you get atomos + ssd and its still cheaper. SO for me, even if there is no big of a diffrence, i have a scree, a transcoder, a bunch of SD cards and two NP batteries + charger which i can use for my yongnuo lightning. It's a good nwews for guys who just want to get cool shots with nice codec and sav some money not spending it on external recorder

    I'm still going to buy a Ninja Flame, not that I dispute your findings. ProRes plays great with my Mac. The 7 inch monitor is terrific for me. I am interested in shooting log and producing HDR content but It is not a priority for me. Gerry in Calgary.

  • @manueljenkin95

    Does the GH5 have good low frequency detail? I don't know what camera you used for the other footage but I think it handled low frequency detail better. At 8.07 to 8.12 the wrinkles in your forehead was captured very well. The GH5 footage looked like a uniform piece without any significant texture (no lows and highs) in the face?
    what parameters do you think will be improved with the all-i 400mbps codec update coming soon?

    Seems to be the case from my tests as well...so right now the only reason to have the external recorder would be the Ninja Inferno for 10-bit 4K 60p, which at this point really is a lot better than the internal codec when shooting 4K 60p

    Hey Pumber! I pared my gh5 to the atomos ninja inferno. Also bought a Sandisk ultra II 480 and a HDMI 2.0b. Unfortunately the monitor cannot rec. at the advertised 10bit-4K-60fps nor are there any options for 1080p slow mo (120-240fps). Their customer support offered very little to no help unfortunately, so I thought about asking you based on your experience. Also would it be possible to use a speedy nvme drive (through a SATA enclosure, in the SSD caddy)? thank you for reading this. Cheers!

      Make sure you have the latest firmware on your ssd. It won't work otherwise.

    • @fumanshoo2
      @fumanshoo2 6 лет назад +1

      Also, be sure you have a proper 4k 60p HDMI 2.0 cable. The Atomos name branded ones are thick and allow that bandwidth to flow through like the light side of The Force. As far as the SSD's, Western Digital have come out with some SPEEDY SSD's.

    • @MichalisCatinas
      @MichalisCatinas 6 лет назад +1

      Thank you very much for the reply. you are right. The problem was a shitty HDMI cable, although it was branded as 2.0b

    As much I agree with most of you all about the Atomos recorder. I will only be able to record to Mov format with my XLR adaptor as I want the 24bit audio recording, which only supports Mov. I've asked Panasonic why can't they do a firmware update. Anyway, back to the Atomos recorder. As a field monitor it has its benefits, but at a price of £1000 or $1000 depending on where you buy it. My reason to buy it would be to simply use it as a recorder saving to the massive side of SSD's compared to SD cards. I even said to SmallHD, why haven't they released a SmallHD recorder on to the market? I don't think the Atmos Ninja Inferno is a perfect product. But SmallHD should be thinking of releasing a recorder to up their game!

  • @LegonDamien
    @LegonDamien 5 лет назад

    1.This is ninja flame not ninja V or inferno ( it will not do 4k 60p 10bit) 2.gh5/s dont do 4k 60p 10 bit internally 3. For gh5/s atomos recorder is amazing investment,you get external monitor thats larger than te screen,you get alot of exposure waveforms, hdd are more reliable and cheaper than Uhs-ii sd cards, editing atomos footage is faster cause it hase more uncompressed footage than the gh5 so its easier on the program and doesnt lag as much.

      So far, it's been pretty good. I've not had issues pulling secondaries in the sky or on skin so far. Something I had issues with a lot in the past with 8 bit footage was keying someone's face in front of a beige wall. This (so far) has been much better and closer to my experience grading, say, the 10 bit external off the gh4. It also comes back from a bad white balance in the grade, but that may just be the camera in general...? Regardless, there's more incoming, so stick around, and we'll try to get more into the weeds.
