I've been using an A7S + Ninja Flame setup for years, though over the last little bit it's become a B-Cam to a Pocket 4K. I still use the Flame as my main on-camera monitor on every shoot though. For the style of work I do the size, brightness in worst case scenario daylight situations, and still just barely good enough format support from a monitoring only perspective have made the purchase feel well worth it even at this point.
I have one Ninja Flame works like a dream I use it with my Sprolink R2 multi-cam switcher. I built it into a Apache case with the Flame attached on the inside lid and R2 in the bottom have on a adjustable rack and it's all wired up ready to go in less than 5 mins with connections embedded in the back of the case. I like the Flame so much that I'm going to get a couple more as stand alone units for my cameras and whatnot. Great little device don't leave home without one in your kit.
Great useful video-- One of the Red case kits just popped up on a local board for $250 and this helped me decide to jump in fast-- great info --slick video---Thanks again
The recording on my Flame stopped working a while ago. I contacted the Atomos helpdesk and they diagnosed it as a ”hardware problem”. But as the model is discontinued theres no way to fix this! They offered me brand new for 400 € but I turned that offer down. Dont want to end up in the same situation again. Have just ordered a Ninja V.
That's unfortunate that they were not able to provide service for your recorder. Did you send it in for evaluation, or was this all done over the phone? I'd be interested to know what actually went wrong in your unit... was it a catastrophic failure or did it just stop turning on? Unless it has gone up in flames, it's hard to believe there is no way to fix it, discontinued or otherwise. Do you have any electronics repair shops near where you are? I know that's probably a no in 2022, but for the price of these it might be worth letting someone have a look.
@@DcSoundOp No, I didn´t send it for evaluation. It was just a mailconversation. The screen still works but when I push the recordbutton (on the fx6/A7siii or at the screen) the "recordframe" just flashes, the "timecode" starts running but nothing is recorded. It says "invalid media" for some of my ssd-discs. I contacted a local wellrenomed repairshop but they said that they thought it would be hopeless. Especially as Atomos claims that they have no spare parts...
Hi, I"m wondering if you if there are any compatibility issues with the Ninja Flame recording a 4k 10bit signal from an EOS-R. I can't find any reference to the two devices used together. Also, does it record the 1080 8 bit signal at 60fps? I thought that it would be an obvious choice to get 10bit from those cameras. Thanks!
I think your A7iii maxes out at 4k 25p & 1080 60p - so yes, they Flame would be a pretty solid buy, similar to the a6500 I'm using with it at the moment. It's a great way to get into ProRes with these cameras if you can find a good used kit, though now I really want to upgrade everything to do 4k 60p. Thanks for the question Chris. Let us know how it all works out for you.
I take it you're not in the area anymore? I've had a few annual jobs call about potentially coming back later this summer, but it is very hard to commit to anything when they might turn around and pull the plug on it again... so for now remote video production & editing is taking priority. - Hope you're doing well & staying safe back home in Germany. Any audio work there at the moment?
I usually shoot with 1Tb Sandisk ultra 3d SSD's - but I have some 500Gb & 2Tb disks also. They are on the Atomos approved media list ( downloads.atomos.com/ninja-v/Supported-Media_NINJA.pdf ) too - amzn.to/3g0ApUw
The flame should work with both of those, though I know some Nikon models have the 30 minute time-out you may have to work around. They can both do a mx of 10 bit 4k at 30fps out of their HDMI ports, which matches the flame nicely. Thanks for the question.
Thanks for the great question - if I remember right, neither of those output 4k over HDMI. Has that changed lately in firmware? If not, you'd be recording 1080p from both of those, and both recorders do 1080p up to 120fps with the same specs. The older flame has a larger & brighter screen, which could be good or bad depending on your style, but it's been a good screen. The smaller Ninja V does have more pixels per inch though, which some folks might prefer. Hope that's helpful, but at 1080p it will be down to a lot of personal preference. All the best!

That's awesome, thanks for the message!
I have a Ninja V, a Ninja Blade, and a Samurai Blade. I do Multicam shoots. The larger screen on the Flame and the dual battery slots appeals to me.

Great to hear, hope you enjoy it, that's a great deal.
*Please note with the latest firmware update, the Ninja V now also features time-lapse mode shooting.*
Thanks for the info Mark 👍🏼
Great video! Thank you for all the info provided! I am looking into getting eos r6, so was also checking external recorders.
Glad I could help, the R6 is an awesome camera!
Great video thanks!
You're welcome!

Greetings from Germany. How is the "Sound Op" business in DC at the moment?
