    I feel you, Chris. I went through some similar learning when I first got my Deity microphone. It taught me a lot about TRS and TRRS cables, powered jacks, and extension cords. By the time I started working with timecode devices through the mic jack, though, the learning came in handy. Essentially, there is no real standard on how that extra ring on TRRS cables are implemented (Apple devices are the WORST about this). When a mic tries to do something useful with it, like the Deity in sensing when the camera's on, that usefulness goes out the window if the mic isn't plugged directly into the mic jack. You'll notice these complications if you use an external audio recorder like, in my case, a Zoom F6. Anyway, thanks for documenting your experience for other creators' benefit.

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  3 года назад +1

      Absolutely - and I have to agree. The Deity - for me - was the worst experience though. With the F6 however I am now having less problems - but that’s probably because I also have a much better understanding of plug-in power, phantom power, and when to use a normal aux/TRA cable vs. a TRRS one.

    • @enidrajm
      @enidrajm 3 года назад +1

      @@ChrisSpiegl Where I got burned with the cable differences was when I was on the set of a livestream and I plugged a lav mic into my Rode Wireless GO without the TRS adapter. The lav was TRRS and the GO only likes TRS. I lost the host's audio completely. 😭Luckily, I had the Deity as a backup on Camera A and was able to boost the gain enough to hobble along. Gotta tell ya, having that manual gain saved my bacon.

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  3 года назад +1

      @@enidrajm sounds like you were using a Ride SmartLav or something similar. And I know the struggle. My partner does yoga videos on RUclips and live and uses the Wireless Go with the SmartLav and the TRRS to TRS adapter. Ideally we would get a straight TRS lav at some point. But for now the SmartLav works great.
      Two things I have learned with these “complications” and “miss hab’s” is to check my gear before I go live or on set. Test the exact configuration - ideally a few days before you need it. That way you may even be able to order or purchase the missing link if there is one.

    Thanks Chris. I found out the hard way. I normally plug my Rode Video Mic into my camera, but this time I figured I'd plug it straight into the Ninja V. I was in a hurry, so I didn't check it. It didn't work at all! Also, I just purchased a Deity S-Mic 2 and was wondering whether it would go straight into the Ninja V. The answer is "no", according to your video, as the Ninja V does not supply the required 48V (or 24V) phantom power. It's fine, as I have a pre-amp box that provides phantom power, but not quite as portable. Anyway, thanks again!

      @ChrisSpiegl  3 года назад +2

      Hey Living Tech, yes, totally feel you. I also found out the hard way. 😅 but important thing about powering / switching the mics: these types of mics don’t need phantom power (12-48v) but Plugin power (2-5v). If you provide them with phantom power they may break. However, what you can do is use a stereo breakout cable to connect them both to the camera. 👌

      @@ChrisSpiegl WOW! I totally missed that. Yes, I did hear you say "it probably needs power", and I now understand that you did not mean phantom power. I'd better listen more accurately next time! So, I'm guessing that my powered Beachtek pre-amp will take care of the 2-5V power then, so I can plug the Rode video mic straight into the preamp and all will be OK? I've subbed to your channel. Please check out mine, in case there's anything of interest there to you (TESLA, Photography/Videography gear (Beachtek pre-amp review coming), DIY Engineering/Tech projects, etc.). ruclips.net/user/livingtech Thanks for all your help here. That is correct, but what if you have a mic like the VideoMic NTG on top of the camera and additionally you have the Wireless Go II to have a secondary mic on the talent? That's when it can be really usefull.
      Another use-case would be when you have your camera audio as a backup and you use an audio recorder and connect the line out to the Atomos Ninja V to simply have it there for easy sync / backup as well.

    If you come from the 80th: Ninja audio IN is just a simple input like compact cassette recorder from the past. Just for mics like that from the 80th. No power, no phantom voltage, no TRRS. By the way: TRRS is more an iPhone thing than the video world.

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  2 года назад

      Pretty much. And the TRRS: with mics like the VideoMic NTG it’s a “both kinds of devices” thing. Since the VideoMic NTG senses if it’s connected to a smartphone or camera.
      And it is the default cable for this mic.

      Two thoughts: 1) are you trying to hear the audio in VLC or a similar video player? You may not hear the audio if it's on channels 3 and 4. So make sure to bring the footage into Premiere Pro or something similar. You may still have the audio it just is on the channels 3 and 4 which usually are not played back in standard video players.
      2) Could also have been that the Audio channels were not activated to record on the NINJA. To make sure the audio channels are recording, go to the Settings on the Ninja under "Meters" (you can also touch the top right hand side where the audio levels are displayed) and you'll land there as well.
      Once there you have all the audio levels and the best is to activate the first three "REC" buttons.
      I hope it's #1 and that you still have some sound. Good luck and let me know.

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  2 года назад

      Yes, that is exactly what you can do with this. Two channels come through on HDMI and then you have another 2 channels via this input.
      Note that you don't get extra files and when you preview the file you might just hear the HDMI channels. But in programs like Premiere Pro and DavinciResolve you will get either 2 stereo tracks or even 4 mono depending on the setup.

      The audio will usually be sent over HDMI and in the audio settings of the Ninja V you then can select which channels should be recorded. So two places to check:
      1) make sure your camera has the mic leveled correctly and also outputs the sound via HDMI (not sure which camera you use, that's why I am mentioning it).
      2) touch the audio meter on the Ninja and go to the "Meters" settings. There you will see multiple audio channels and you can most likely activate 3 buttons below the volume indicators. Activate all 3 and see which one gives you the camera audio signal.
      That should give you the signal and ability to record your mic correctly. If you have more questions, please feel free to reach out.

    Hey bro! I got the Rode VC1 3.5mm TRS Microphone Extension Cable for Cameras (10') ROVC1 and sometimes it works perfect other times my NTG mic powers off and makes this terrible nasty noise that completely destroys the sound. Most of the time I record while looking up at the mic to make sure it’s still on and didn’t power off due to the extension cable. Before it shuts down the noise in the video during post is extremely staticky and intolerable. I need a solution 😔

    I recently did a video shoot & had my Rode Wireless Go mic plugged in directly to the atomos ninja v. The only issue is there’s no sound whenever I try playing them in preview on my Mac. How do I fix the audio settings on my atomos to prevent this in the future?

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  2 года назад +1

      The issue with no sound in preview is that the atomos saves the audio channels as 4 audio channels and preview only plays back the first two as a stereo signal. In the video editing program you probably do have the 4 tracks available.
      I currently can't confirm this, but an idea: if you disable the recording of the HDMI audio tracks, and only enable the internal Atomos Line/Mic port, then it could be that you end up with 2 channels only and those would then be played back by preview as well.
      Ofcourse I think that would be less desirable because it would mean you are loosing the other audio tracks.
      And BTW: I also think it's often easier to just connect the Wireless GO to my camera cause then I don't have any sync offset I need to worry about.

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  3 года назад +2

      Do you see any signal on the audio metering screen where the different inputs are shown next to each other?
      You could also check if you have the vertical / horizontal audio meter setting activated.
      And with all that, you then should be able to choose which channels you want to record. By default the Ninja only records the hdmi audio. But you can choose to record the other lines as well.
      About the mic: if that needs plug-in power, that will most likely not work, since the Ninja does not provide that. Only mic level microphones that have their own power or don’t need plug-in power are supported there.

      There you should be able to activate the others to record as well.
      An important note: when you check the recording with VLC or Preview on macOS you’ll only hear the first two channels (which are most likely the HDMI audio). And only in programs like Premiere Pro, Audition, or DaVinci Resolve you’ll see the other audio tracks.
