I came to youtube to find this exactly! I'm using the shinobi with my canon R3, clog3 cinema gamut. and they responded Atomos responded. We would like to inform you that some cameras output gamma and gamut within the legal range through the HDMI port instead of full range. When you apply LUTs designed for full range to footage within the legal range, colors and highlights become overly saturated and blown out. So, the solution is to convert your LUT into a legal range via editing software rather than full.
😩I ended up here because I just spent an entire day running people through a line like cattle for talking head interviews. I’m trying to match a c70 clog2 and R6/ninja v Clog3 and I was like what is happening here?! I can’t believe you posted this on the same day! I’m so annoyed right now but also grateful that I found this post in the same day. I can accept a catastrophe much better when I at least have an answer. Thank you! 🙏
This is exactly what I was looking for! Important note, older Atomos firmware records BT2020 much warmer than you show here. To get the best BT2020 recording possible make sure to update your Atomos monitor.
What Atomos didn't tell you is that it's a problem with HDMI standards. HDMI simply does not support Canon Cinema Gamut. It's too wide a color space for the HDMI standard. BT2020, however, is supported by HDMI, so the Atomos Ninja, Ninja V+ and Shogun series recorders can accurately record BT2020 video because the BT2020 color space is supported by the HDMI standard. So the problem is that Canon Cinema gamut color space exceeds the HDMI standard. If you want to use wide gamut color space on your Atomos recorder via the HDMI feed, you are limited to a max color space of BT2020.
Thanks for the tip and all other useful videos you produced! I recently found that Canon has this quirk documented in camera manual stating that HDMI output is Rec.2020 on supported external devices, regardless of Cinema Gamut setting in camera E.g. Camera Cinema Gamut -> BT.2020 in Ninja Camera BT.2020 -> BT.2020 in Ninja Camera BT.709 -> BT.709 in Ninja
Is this information on Cinema gamut still accurate? I’d like to know as I am using the ninjav+ with the canon R5 and wanted to make sure if I need to make these changes or maybe update the firmware on myninja V+ if it’s out of date, which I don’t think it is
Hi thanks for the BT2020 setting. I was setting the system before watching your video for a project in France by next week and now I can be aware of the wrong settings. Thanks again for your lovely tutorials cheers
Todd... Thank You soo much for this video. We talked about 4 months ago about this problem on instagram. I personally exchanged a lot of messages with support. Unfortunately my messages were dismissed and explained that everything was fine and maybe my ninja v is broken but it is not. Ehh.. If support see this just please take this feedback serious becouse a lot of us want use full camera gammut and clog 3. Many people buy your product for make overheating gone but gammut is broken this way.
Thank you for the great videos on R5 + Atomos V pairing. I got the WD drives which worked perfectly for about the first 18 videos and now I get a consistent kangaroo symbol which interrupts the recording. Has anyone else got similar results?
I too tripped over the CLog3/Cinema Gamut issue and couldn't work out what was going wrong, so, I ended up testing combinations of Log and colourspace to check the differences to hit the same solution. I was still left with poor shadow detail in the Ninja V ProRes recording compared to the camera recording. Not sure of what the cause of that might be.
Good morning.. Question.. Taking pictures while recording video on the Atomos V. Is it s different setup.. Would like to see a video of using the Ninja as recording what your taking pictures of thanks..
The reason why Cinema Gamut from Clog3 looks so terrible is because Canon Made the Cinema Gamut with so many colors is that there is no HDMI cable that can Handel it, so things get lost in the translation, when it reaches the Ninja V system, so the colors are messed up. this will be that way until some one or Atomos Develops an HDMI cable that can Handel this, or Canon Changes the Cinema Gamut to fix this.. my best advise is if your going to use the Ninja V to process your videos, is use Rec 2020.. I have the Canon R6 and will not record Internally, that is unfortunate because i would love to take advantage of the 1920X1080P 120 fps and the Cinema Gamut. The reason i refuse to record internally is because Canon's Codec that writes to the SD cards is so compressed that when you try to edit your videos in Premier pro (which is what i use) is that it lags so bad, it's unusable you can't playback in any smooth playback it lags so bad it's unusable. And I'm not using a crappy Computer system, i'm using a Intel I9 with a Nvidia RTX 3080 Video card, now i have edited 8K 60fps Raw file from RED system camera with no problem, but even a 4k30p canon internal recorded video sucks editing you would have to start writing proxies, and that is a pain i will not do that.. So Hopefull all these issues are fixed if canon works on their codec system and comes out with a firmware for it, i will be happy to start recording internally.. But as of now, forget it, it's too bad too because i would have loved to do some 120p slow motion footage but, it's not in the cards right now, no pun intended LOL
I'm editing with Resolve on a 2021 MacBook Pro and those H265 files (UHD, 4:2:2 10-bit) from the R6 playback smoothly. That's because the M1 Max has hardware decode for that codec. Makes a huge difference. The latest Intel CPUs also support hardware decode via their own GPU - so for Resolve, it can take advantage of the Intel GPU for hardware decode and then a 'real' GPU (eg. RTX30xx or 40xx) for the rest of the heavy lifting. I'm not sure if Premiere can do the same, but it likely can. I totally get why you would run screaming from those H265 files, though. For all but the latest hardware, they are unusable without transcoding to proxies. I'd rather do that in my Ninja V if I'm going to work with ProRes HQ or DNxHR. Thanks for posting that info on the reason for the problem with Cinema Gamut. Make sense. Cinema gamut is a crazy-huge color space.
Hey Todd, do you know if the Clog 3 Cine Gamut issue has been fixed? I've just avoided it after the initial discovery. However, its been a few months and was curious to see if there's been any development on correcting it. Thanks
Hi Todd, thanks for this content. I was shooting in clog on my R5, and my second camera, the EOS R. But i sold the R and now have an R6MK2 and it doesn't shoot clog only clog 3. My question is about exposing the clog correctly. When i fist did a test, the shadows were incredibly noisy. My ISO was 800, view assist was off. If you are referring to issues in post with choppy duplicate frames when recording 60p, after 7 months I finally found the fix - TURN OFF Standby Low Res mode. Atomos was completely unaware and incapable of providing a fix, even after sending it in. By this point it had already jeopardized a shoot but thankfully it is working correctly now...except for the Cinema Gamut issues. Edit* I haven't fully tested the external 60p recording with Standby Low Res set to "OFF", so the caveat may be that overheating can occur but if you are recording externally at least you'll have smaller file sizes.
useful video, Just want to check if you can trigger the record in ninja v from camera / gimbal by pressing record button without having internal card.It does work for me only if the card is present and does simultaneous recording(internal & external) end result internal cards gets filled and stops recording.
I just bought a normal monitor that have fals colors ..etc and use a CF expresss card and it works great. You can edit RAW easily in both premiere pro and resolve, there is no need to ninja monitor that costs a thousand dollars and not supported anymore !
Great channel, I am rather new to videography. I have a M1 Mac and a PC, so would you recommend recording in ProRes Raw or C-log 3 if i purchased the Atmos V+?
Thanks for the video. I've started using the Ninja V more with my R5 and R6 (sticking to ProRes since I use Resolve) and I keep making mistakes that have me returning to your videos for a brush up. Completely unrelated question. What is the tripod and ball head you have in this video?
I totally agree with recording self with external monitor. I think I would use a monitor even with the R5c... I also just got bad vision in general, so I usually got a monitor RIGHT NEXT TO ME. I don't think I could go back. Wow, what a coincidence, I just recorded/uploaded a video yesterday and forgot to try cinema gamut via Ninja V! Good thing I forgot!! lol
I'm so lost... If I record anything in C log on the ninja V Plus it comes out dark with crushed shadows. The only way around this for me is to use HDMI RAW and record pro res raw on the Ninja. Then I have to deal with AK files which premiere pro was doing pretty good with on my Windows PC. I was surprised by that lol
when using the screen for photography, (like having the tripod set up for macro with the ninja attached to a leg) can you tap the screen of the monitor for where you want to focus like you can on the R5 body screen? if not, is there a monitor out there that will? i have struggled to find answers for this. Thanks!
Just checking back in on this 8 months later. It appears that the yellow cast problem hasn’t been corrected. What a shame. That’s the only thing that holds me back from external recording on my ninja with my R6 and R7. Ugh. I just continue to suffer through compressed codecs when I need a B cam shot for my c70.
There are scores of external displays from several manufacturers. Does anyone, other than Atomos, make an external monitor recorder combo like the Ninja V?
Is it possible to just record 1080p to Atomos Ninja from Canon R5c? I'm looking to do a longer shoot maybe 5-6 hours so I'm more interested in storage and reliability of battery and camera temperature rather than 4K.
What happens when recording ProRes Raw on a R5 or R5 C? ProRes Raw is Clog2 with cinema gammut. So it will have the same color issues because it's cinema gammut color space in prores raw? Thank you.
I just thought I would add that I see this same color shift using Cinema Gamut on an EOS R / Atomos Ninja V combination. It appears, as others have mentioned here, that the Canon Cinema Gamut simply cannot run over HDMI, which is unique since that's CLOG 1. I also see a slight shift when using my C200 via HDMI on CLOG 3, so it's not just on these hybrid mirrorless cameras.
Man I saw this vid and was hoping you had a resolution for the cinema gamut issue on the ninja lol. I had reached out to Atomos back in January and they just said “engineering is currently investigating it”. But in the meantime I’ve been happy with clog3 rec709, will try 2020 as well with your LUT’s
I would love an external monitor for my R6 and R5C but its my understanding you lose the ability to touch the screen to manage AUTOFOCUS. So how is everyone managing that? I'm sticking with camera monitor because I don't want to give that up but it's hard for me to believe others are so willing to give it up -- so I know there must be something I don't know! Do tell!
hi from Fabio from Italy. I have a canon R5C and a Ninja V+. The Ninja connected authorized and configured in prores configures me only the 4k p 25 while in prores raw the 5.9 k p25 is configured in super 35 mm format not full but cropped set on the camera.I have a regular external power bank and a 4k cable. I can't understand the problem. Also What are the best recording formats: On Ninja monitor or on R5C camera? Thanks for the replies
In the previous video you indicated your preference under the heading characteristics by adding 3 steps of sharpness to your images. Is this something you still do with the new setting in C-LOG 3 in Bt.2020?
Hello, I watched your other setup video and you recommended the duttek hdmi cabel. With this cable it is possible to record 4k 60 fps on my canon r6 or do I need the ZILR 10-bit Micro HDMI Cable you have linked in this video?
Could it be that the Ninja settings are a bit strange and this is the reason why we have this yellow color cast? As soon as I activate my raw signal on my Canon R5 in the Ninja V+ I see the gamma changing to Canon Log 2 and I can not switch it to clog 3. When having no raw signal selecting clog 3 is possible.
When you set the same thing on the ninja V atomos in the R5 bt.2020 room under the heading input -> camera output -> Log / HDR? Or does the Camera output item leave the Legalize button active?
Hi Todd, love the video. Currently trying to decide between the R5 with Atomos Ninja V+ or R5C, new aspiring photographer/videographer and will probably only have one camera for the next year to two, could you suggest which would be the wiser buy? I imagine I'll be needing to record 45-1hour for several recurring projects I have in mind, torn by the loss of IBIS, but I don't know how big a deal that is in reality as this is all new to me. Thanks for any suggestions!
Man this is such a hard question to answer. One thing to think about is whether you’d like to use a monitor to compose your shots, use waveforms, etc. I much prefer using the Ninja for this even when recording internally on the R5. If I owned the R5C, I’d still plug in and mount the Ninja to monitor my shots because the R5C screen is just as small as the R5. That’s part of the reason why I haven’t felt a pressing need to get the R5C (plus I like having IBIS for stills on the R5).
I have the R5C and would love to explore 8k RAW and 5.9k Raw which I know I can do internally no problem, however the problem is exporting. I'm running on 2021 Premier Pro and any time I go to export an 8k clip or 5.9k raw clip to say just an mp4 format I'm not sure if it's just my computer that can't support it but It will just NOT play. Since I just edit in PP right now I usually try to get my ISO ect correct in post but I want to make sure I'm getting the best colors ect. I would love to record in ProRes Raw, however maybe it's just easier to shoot in 8kRaw LT and convert to ProRes using media encoder then edit in PP? I mainly stick with XFAVC as it's just SUCH a smooth format for recording and in CLOG 3 it can still be colored nicely, but just want to get some 8k footage and use it as that's why I got the camera in the first place! I can also just save myself a TON of money if I just go with a simple external monitor that would allow me to monitor exposure and focus much easier than the smaller LCD screen.
Good video but I didn't find what I was looking for..Why is it not possible to record in HD 25P with the Ninja V +? the minimum is 50P even though my camera is set on 25p ... works perfectly with the 4K but not with the HD :/
I'm having difficulty getting the audio to work properly with my Canon R5, Atomos Ninja V+, and RODE Wireless GO (not the new one). If I plug the mic into the camera, no audio comes through the monitor. When I plug it into the Ninja, I seem to have sound from both the internal camera mic and the Wireless GO plugged into the monitor. I'm sure it's just a setting that I missed. How can I make this work properly?
Hi Todd, Atomos just released the new firmware for Ninja with ProRes Raw record for R6 Mark II (6K 25 and 3,7K 50). Tested but my Atomos set-up automatically on C Log 2 and cinema gamut. I’m not able to change any setup. Is it normal? Thanks
Please help! So the issue I am having is that when I push record on the ninja it only records for a few seconds. then stops, then starts again. It will do this a few times and then just stops recording all together. No longer than 11 seconds of record time. I am using the r6
Hi Todd. I recently bought the Ninja V+ and followed your settings with my Canon R5. Everything went fine until I update the R5 to 1.6.0. I was wondering if you ran across this issue. In my R5, I have an SD card and an Angelbird CF Express-B. When I record 4K or 4K fine, I am able to record to the CF Express and the Ninja just fine. However, when I switched to 8K raw, I can only record to the SD card and Ninja. For some reason, when switching to the 8K raw, the R5 does not see the CF Express card. I can only detect the SD card. When I removed the SD card, leave in the CF Express and try to record 8K raw, the R5 shows "No Card" with the SD card icon. When I remove the Ninja, same thing, I can only record to the SD card. I had thought you can only record to the CF Express for 8K raw, but in my case, it is the opposite. Do you think there is something in my setting is wrong or is this a 1.6.0 issue? it was fine with 1.5.2. Maybe I can try to downgrade to 1.5.2 and check it out again? Is downgrade an option? thank you
I think I've had the same problem. In 8K Raw I get ProRes Raw on my Ninja V+ and simultaneously I get IPB versions of the same files on the SD card. But I was surprised to find no RAW files on my Angelbird CFast Express card in the camera.
Hey Todd! Thanks for your hard work on the video. I have a issue that you are probbably noticed. I don't have the HDMI + Camera settings on my R5. Do you know if its a firmware problem?
Can you please do a video on your post-production workflow with the R5 and Ninja V+? I just got the combo, and I import my footage into premier pro, but then it seems no matter what LUT I apply, the footage just looks terrible, am I not supposed to apply a LUT or how does it work? Thank you, great content as always!
Great coverage of the Cinema Gamut issue. Thanks. I wonder if it has been resolved in recent firmware updates? I just received a Ninja V to pair with my R6 so I'll be interested in running some tests. BTW - from what I'm seeing on the Atomos website, the Canon R6 is not listed as being compatible with the Ninja V+ for some reason. Thanks again for a great video.
@@shank91 I think the problem is that the Cinema Wide Gamut is outside the spec for HDMI 2.0. I’ve been shooting with BT2020 instead of Cinema Wide Gamut and the results are very good.
Can someone help me? I bought the atamos to pair with my R6 but i'm now realizing pro res is not supported in Resolve. What other alternatives are there besides transcoding? I can transcode it but would that not defeat the purpose by degrading the files? What are my other options?
I wanted to comment that WD Blue is NOT on Atomo's list of tested drive. And the 1 Tb version fails for me. It has worked a couple of times, but now recording stops after 10 seconds or a minute. I would NOT recommend for people to get WD Blue!! (if you look at the list you will see red dots all across). With the WD Blue I can only record with ProRes 422 LT (4K 29.97).
I have to say, you have some of the best audio on youtube. Your content is very polished. Thanks, Todd.
It's cause he doesn't use a lapel and knows how to place this mic as close to his mouth as possible.
I came to youtube to find this exactly! I'm using the shinobi with my canon R3, clog3 cinema gamut. and they responded
Atomos responded.

If you want to use wide gamut color space on your Atomos recorder via the HDMI feed, you are limited to a max color space of BT2020.
Wow. So till the day HDMI itself gets upgraded we are not going to be able to use anything greater than BT2020 on External recorders?
Thanks for the tip and all other useful videos you produced!
I recently found that Canon has this quirk documented in camera manual stating that HDMI output is Rec.2020 on supported external devices, regardless of Cinema Gamut setting in camera

Just ordered the Ninja V for $399 today on amazon and saw the V+ was $599, I guess they are on sale now
Thanks for the great video. May I know your Audio setup? Mic, amp etc
I was surprised by that lol
great vid.... pretty sure you're gonna get an r5c.... its too good to pass up
I wonder if Clog3 is still having problems with the ninja v or if they finally fixed it
when using the screen for photography, (like having the tripod set up for macro with the ninja attached to a leg) can you tap the screen of the monitor for where you want to focus like you can on the R5 body screen? if not, is there a monitor out there that will? i have struggled to find answers for this. Thanks!
Is there a setting to remove the buttons off the screen so it is a clean HD 1920 x 1080 view? Also does it have a clean HDMI output?
Just checking back in on this 8 months later. It appears that the yellow cast problem hasn’t been corrected. What a shame. That’s the only thing that holds me back from external recording on my ninja with my R6 and R7. Ugh. I just continue to suffer through compressed codecs when I need a B cam shot for my c70.
Why use a R6 or R7 with the C70? That's really stupid to think b-cam footage from either camera could hold up against the C70
Thank you.
How about the vent noise? I got this today and is so freaking noisy. Definitely I have to return
Does anyone know if the C-log issue has been resolved since this video came out?
Great stuff Todd!
Would the r5 and atomos ninja v+ fit on a gimbal?
Man I saw this vid and was hoping you had a resolution for the cinema gamut issue on the ninja lol. I had reached out to Atomos back in January and they just said “engineering is currently investigating it”. But in the meantime I’ve been happy with clog3 rec709, will try 2020 as well with your LUT’s
2 years later it still looks wierd on the ninja ultra
ProRes RAW works with canon r6 + Ninja?
Thx for the video.🇫🇷
Great informative video! Is there an ability to change the FPS input from 60 to 24 when recording Canon R5 EVF in camera mode?
Does the crop mode actually crop in on the sensor or does it just crop the resolution?
Quick question what settings do i need to not record internally on Canon R6 while I’m recording on Ninja V?
Hi 🙂
Does the R6 M2 have All-I?
If not, is there some way to bypass that, by shooting directly to the Ninja with ProRes Raw?
Thx :-)
Really enjoy your videos!
My R6 started heating up after 20-30 mins on Atomos ninja when shooting in 4k50p. Any solutions?
How do people who switch between camera recording and Ninja recording manage the differences in optimal settings between the two?
Can you power the Atomos with Canon R6 batteries? Lp-E6NH?
Anyone know if the cinema gamut issue is still a problem?
Last time I checked it was. Atomos publishes release notes for firmware updates you could also check.
Which SDD do you recommend for the Atomos Ninja V? -would like to record in high resolution. Thank you
When you set the same thing on the ninja V atomos in the R5 bt.2020 room under the heading input -> camera output -> Log / HDR? Or does the Camera output item leave the Legalize button active?
With which lens did you shoot this video?
Which has better noise control and color tone between the Ninja V+ Prores & the internal files ? Should i get the Ninja V+ ?
Hi 🙂
Can the R6 Mark 2 record 4k ProRes to the Ninja V+?
Or will it only record the full 6k?
Thx!
It's the camera. I just tested with my BMD video assist. I have the R5.
as a wedding cinematographer, do I need to buy Ninja Ultra? or Ninja is good enough?
ate you still using CLOG 3 bt2020
So while in stand by Low res, 4k 60fps, attached to an Atomos Ninja, What quality is actually being pushed through the HDMI? on the r6
Hey Todd! Thanks for your hard work on the video. I have a issue that you are probbably noticed. I don't have the HDMI + Camera settings on my R5. Do you know if its a firmware problem?
So if we go for the 5K RAW recording on the Atomos Ninja V, we get the same crop that crippled the Canon R?
I’m afraid so. But sometimes that crop is a benefit
Use the RF16mm lens, it's great with crop.
From my understanding and tests, you lose pretty much all DR and grading capabilities.
@@RoadRallyLife what do you mean by all DR?

Can you please do a video on your post-production workflow with the R5 and Ninja V+? I just got the combo, and I import my footage into premier pro, but then it seems no matter what LUT I apply, the footage just looks terrible, am I not supposed to apply a LUT or how does it work? Thank you, great content as always!
Are you applying Clog2 LUTs ?
Is this the case with r6ii and ninja v?
I assume it is, though I don’t have a mark 2 to test with. If anyone else knows please chime in.
Thank you very much!!
Thanks again for a great video.
hi mate, hew is this still an issue on the newest updates on ninja v? thanks
@@shank91 I think the problem is that the Cinema Wide Gamut is outside the spec for HDMI 2.0. I’ve been shooting with BT2020 instead of Cinema Wide Gamut and the results are very good.
@@TheRealBarkinMadd ok, thanks for the answer!
Can someone help me? I bought the atamos to pair with my R6 but i'm now realizing pro res is not supported in Resolve. What other alternatives are there besides transcoding? I can transcode it but would that not defeat the purpose by degrading the files? What are my other options?
can i record anamorphic with ninja+ ?
You can use the monitor to de squeeze. But you can record anamorphic with any anamorphic lens. In body or on the ninja v
I’ve recorded 4k 24 HQ. I run it for 2 hr ceremonies frequently with no issues
