As the Atamos here still uses the Canon R5 sensor for video, if obviously not the processing. Does that mean the R5 can record with this for an unlimited time now, instead of shutting down after a half hour or so?
Hey guys, I need your help. This is kind of a big deal to me because I am really trying to streamline my workflow for video production. So here it goes. I recently picked up the new Atomos V+ for my Canon R5. I have had the R5 for about a year and love it. I have not been using it to its full potential because cRAW is difficult to edit and requires a lot of time and processing power to transcode it to prores. I really love using LumaFusion on my M1 iPad Pro and now I am able to scrub through 8k All-i footage without proxies. So then I wanted to record 8k raw to have the best quality out of the camera. Prior to buying the Atomos I would have to transfer the CRM files to my gaming laptop with a RTX 3070 then I would have to convert each clip in Premiere Pro to Prores 422 which would take a while. I would then have to copy those back to my iPad Pro and edit them in LumaFusion. Now, I know you are going to ask me why I don’t edit on the laptop, but I am much faster and much more comfortable using my ipad to edit video. I enjoy the ergonomics so much. So I bought the Atomos V+ so I can output 8k raw to it and record 8k prores HQ right into the Atomos. I would then slide out the 1TB ssd and connect it to my iPad Pro and LumaFusion can playback the file without issue. NOW HERE IS MY PROBLEM. “COLORSPACE”. No matter what option I have tried in LumaFusion, the colorspace is way off and not usable. If I playback the footage in LumaFusion before I drop the clip into my timeline, it looks fine. As soon as I put it in the timeline, colorspace becomes an issue. The closest one that is somewhat recognizable is Wide Gamut HDR - HDR10 (PQ). All others look like static or noise. Can someone please help? I really do not know what to do. There is no better software than LumaFusion for video editing on the iPad and this is the entire reason I bought the Atomos otherwise I would have just stuck with the Canon internal 8k raw recording, but then I would have to lug a laptop around to transcode the canon files to apple prores then copy back to my ipad. Sorry for the long comment. Please help if you can, thank you.
I am confused after being a professional cinematographer for over 30 years. How can you output an 8k signal from the Canon R5 HDMI externally when the camera can only do 4k max thru the HDMI. Additionally, the HDMI port does NOT support 8k transport. This is a hardware issue that can not be corrected with firmware. The ONLY mirrorless camera that has 8k HDMI transport capabilities is the Fujifilm X-H2.
Not if you have an external mic with some method of distancing the mic from the camera, e.g. with Smallrig attaching systems. Also you don't want an omnidirectional mic (the in-camera mic is usually pretty omnidirectional). You need a mic that excludes or reduces sound from the rear sides. Notice too that Jordan is not recording ambient sound. He is not speaking into the camera microphone. He is using a concealed mic. like the Rode wireless Go system so his microphone is several feet from the camera. I think he uses the receiver to record directly into the camera, but camera Preamps are not as good as those provided by dedicated recorders like those manufactured by MixPre or Zooom. For the kind of blog recording that Jordan does you can improve the sound quality by using a recorder that is completely separate from the camera. For example, Zoom now sells the Zoom II, a credit card sized device that records in 32-bit float so you don't have to mess with controls when recording. Even though you are making a separate recording with an external recorder it is remarkably easy to sync up the sound with the video from your camera in post.

I'm sitting at my desk in my cool house, watching youtube videos like this one to help me set this thing up with my camera. The Ninja V was the reason I decided to go with the R5. I wish the Ninja V+ worked with the Sony FS700r... The Shogun Inferno is just to large to always bring around. Would love a compatible 5in SDI recorder that works with Sony FS700r
What about Black magic Video assist 12g. I prefer it over Atomos. I own both of them.
A nice upgrade over the Ninja V if you happen to have the right camera. I unfortunately have (2) wrong cameras: The Sony A7SIII and the Sony A1. It would be nice to see Atomos and Sony get act together on this and expand their compatibility to 8k and 4k 120p on the A1 and 4k 120p on the A7SIII.
What's your opinion about sony a1 ?
Doesn't R5 have 4k 120, so why couldn't you test with it, does ninja v+ not support it?
Why would you need a Sony to test 4k120 vs the R5?
Ninja v+ does not support it with the R5. It does with the Sony FX6 though.
@@faithhouse6111 supports 8k raw but not 4k120. Geeze I would rather have the 4k120. 😆
Can someone please tell me why my Canon R5 is overheating even when attached to the Ninja V? There are no memory cards in, and I wasn't even recording. I'm sitting at my desk in my cool house, watching youtube videos like this one to help me set this thing up with my camera. The Ninja V was the reason I decided to go with the R5. Everyone says that the Ninja V solves the overheating problem but my R5 is still overheating. What am I doing wrong?
Atomos have a campaign called LEVEL UP lasting until Dec 31st where the Ninja V+ costs 999 dollars but of what I see here Sweden it seems that deal only applies in the USA!😔
Hey anyone knows if dpreview has a discord?
Excellent video as always 👌
Been looking forward to this review!
Guess I'll tack on the Ninja+ to the Z9 😂
Kidding. But a nice big external monitor is nice to work with.
I'll definitely buy the v+
Nice review! Questions I've had on my mind for a while now. I think I'm sticking with my NinjaV until further notice.
2:49 the price of ninja 5 is bigger then buying a CFast card, so this is not a advantage
OMG ice on the windshield already? This is bumming me out.
We used to, in Sacramento. Have not in 20 years. It is warming.
I really like atomos products and their update politics. But propres raw monopoly for FCPX is a real pain in the ass( Windows can open it in premiere but without metadata) . If camera manufacturers will continue adding BRAW support and Apple won’t stop being greedy jerks, I’ll switch to Blackmagic video assist.
Maybe the Ninja V+ will finally support Fuji Raw. :)
Did your hdmi cable come “undone”...🤣
thank you.
Interesting facts raised
No Resolve? Crazy!!!
It looks like overheating is no longer a problem in 8k raw video if one chooses to shoot externally with this monitor on the R5.
Problem is, you're spending $800 more to fix a problem that should never have been a problem in the first place.
IMO Canon should have just limited the feature to external recorders to avoid the whole debate.
@@cyrfung It also overheats in full quality 4K. Poor thermal design.
@@BlueBomberTurbo I agree :)
@@djstuc I think 8k video will still happen eventually. If Canon doesn't do it I still think Sony will introduce the A1 with 8k video feature
You can also shoot 5K in super 35 mode with the R5 and original Ninja V now, with the correct firmware.
You have to turn the digital IS and put it in cropped mode. 5k raw.
I'm going to have to object here. You might not be able to PHYSICALLY see the difference between the RAW image formats, there is actually a difference when using professional green screen keying. You want to get the smoothest cut humanly possible, so you want 16-bit 444 baby, UHHHHHH!!!!!!
The files only chug because your pc is slow. :)
I need 2 atomos..
1 Ninja V for my R6 and 1 Ninja V plus for my R5
oh boi this is expensive monitor. I will probably buy older version lol since its 688 euro vs 1698. I can buy too lol
Nice HDMI cable choice. 👍
199$ for 1TB SSD? Wow. In germany you get 1TB for 60-80€
That same one? There are cheaper models, but ones specifically compatible with the Ninja for higher specs aren’t as cheap.
@@benjhaisch What higher specs are you talking about? Prores Raw in 8K needs 280MB/s. Thats nothing. Every 5 years old SSD can do that. Two weeks ago I bought new 2x1TB Samsung evo for 55€ each.
But that doesn't matter because the Atomos Ninja V+ kostet 1500€ here. What a joke for just a faster CPU.
fwiw, I bought an SSD that wasn't on the list thinking the same thing and it dropped frames like crazy.
🎉🎉
LETS GOOOOO
Brandon? 😎
Additional €1000 only for a newer cpu is excessive!
Of course I'm using resolve, I'm not a hack.
I can't justify the £1000 price tag for the Ninja V+
wait? apple mac m1 chip cant handle this? lmk.
M1s really struggle with Canon Raw. They perform beautifully with ProRes Raw. That’s why the Ninja V+ will be really useful for FCPX editors.
