I have both the standard Canon EF-RF adapter, as well as the Canon Drop-in-Filter EF-RF adapter. If it’s in your budget, you will love the drop-in-filter adapter.
Also, the charging cable should come free if you buy the battery grip.

well done, first r5 vid I can actually sit through. I have EOS R, R6 and R5 and I love them. R5 Is far easier to carry than my S1H and does same job. Also the smallrig cage with a side handle makes taking video with R5 or 6 a whole different ballgame, super light and highly stable.

Thank you for an excellent video and clarifying my questions on external charging and operating the camera with an external pd power bank. I also use a dummy battery for timelapse made by Case Relay. I can plug it into a power bank and use the USB C port for my Timelapse+ View or Syrp motion control to control my camera.
Also, I use the Small Rig L bracket which I got got $29 compared to RRS for about $180. It’s great as well.

I bought the R5 along with a CFExpress 128GB card, card reader, Canon EF to RF adapter, and screen protectors for the rear and top screens. After playing around with it for a week I kept getting an "Error 70" constantly. I checked around the internet to see what Error 70 was all about. After reading several variations I decided to return it and get a replacement. Now it works fine with no more "Error 70". Knock on wood and yes, it definitely drained my wallet. I needed something better than my Canon 5D Mk IV and the R5 was it, facial and eye tracking, facial autofocus as well as Clog2, rear screen scrolling, switch between photo and video with a push of the M-Fn button (programmed), and 4K 120fps.

Fantastic tour. I agree with all the other commenters that your audio is top-notch.
Since it's the YT comments section and engagement is good, I thought I might nitpick a few points: when you demonstrated the frame rate difference of the batteries it sounds like the camera was in the middle speed mode, where the speed indicator is white instead of green. Probably because the batteries were too low OR you had wifi or Bluetooth turned on. Another is that overheating can still happen with external recording (for me, at least) BUT if you set the LCD/viewfinder displays to turn off AND eject the CFexpress card, it helps a lot. The last nitpick is that the R5 uses micro-HDMI, whereas mini-HDMI is larger.
Now I'm off to buy a cage for my camera...

Another great video! I love my SmallRig stuff but I agree with you about the mic flap on the R5. SmallRig should have added about another mm of clearance on the cage so the mic flap could be swiveled forward instead of having to be bent out of the way. I'm also a bit disappointed by the design of the port protector because they made it larger than necessary for the R5 in order to accommodate the different port configuration of the R6. It interferes with the rotation of the review screen. Not an issue when using the Atomos, but it's a nuisance to remove and the screws are easy to lose. I find myself using the Canon-provided plastic protector/cable support instead. I also picked up a RAVPower Pioneer 65W 4-Port Desktop Charger to charge via USB-C and act as an AC adapter and it has worked great so far.

Thanks for such a great video. Can I ask whether you have tried the Smallrig cage designed for the R5 with battery grip attached? There is very little online about it, and the only extended video finds fault with the "pressure blocks" designed to slot into the eyelets on either side. One of these blocks is supposedly too big and can bend the little piece of metal in the eyelet. But if that only affects the ability to attach a strap, maybe just don't attach a strap? Thanks again.

Looking forward for a video about grip extensions. Like the EG-E1 for RP cameras. I hate the way my pinky has nothing to grip on the R5 and I am not willing to invest 350 into a full battery grip and add a lot of weight to be carried around with the camera. I just wanted that Canon or someone else had developed a simple ergonomic grip extension for the R5. The brackets and cages are not for that intent.

5V 3A is the PD standard the cameras will charge from when turned off. so, some 15W, 18W and 20W chargers work. some of them however use different combinations, like 9V 2A for essential the same power output, but the camera doesnt recognize that profile and will not charge. they can also use 9V 3A for quicker charging and additional power (grey battery icon) when the camera is turned on.
the cameras will not charge from "normal" 5V 2.xA power supplys, and not from power supplys that dont offer at least one of those two profiles, even if they have 60W or more capability.

Thank-you! I’m a new R5 owner, and this is helpful. I will say I got the SmallRig cage and like it, but then my husband gave me the Blue Kondor cage and I prefer it, but I can’t really explain why. It just feels better for me. But the SmallRig has the built-in Arca Swiss and that’s compelling.
I do want to use the R5 for my webcam, so I just bought the power adapter. Is there any reason I would *need* the whole dummy battery thing? I’m assuming the power adapter with a battery in will give me continuous power?

    Hi Todd,
New sub here. Well done with this video and explaining through the different accessories for the R5/6.
I couldn’t figure out how to charge the R and R5 through power bank and/or power adapter but your video validate it. Canon didn’t help with no guidance and/or video talking about this. Had the old LP-6 batteries, which can’t charge the R unless it is the LP-6N and the R5 with the LP-6N and LP-6NH batteries. Did you do trial and error or spoke to Canon to find out it needed a cable that is compatible with PD and the power brick needs to be at least 45W? Or it’s in the manual I never read?
For new accessories, try to check out a recent Kickstarter that is still going on Indiegogo, it’s called X-tra which is another solution for quick battery + charger.
And for filters, check out Revoring filters and rings. It is finishing delivering the Kickstarter campaign and should be available to the market probably in next 2-3mos I suspect.
Thanks for the informative video and looking forward to more content. Happy NY!

@@cipisound Hi Draghita, I believe it is possible to use the internal battery and supply power via USB-C port and achieve long record times. I have not tried that method as I already have the dummy battery + regulator with D-tap power connector which I used for EOS 5D previously. So for my tripod-mount setup, I have a single 198 Watt-hour V-mount battery, and I use that to power the R5, the Atomos Ninja V, and a Sound Devices audio recorder. The battery will last all day with plenty to spare. certainly long enough to fill-up a 2 TB drive on the Atomos :-)

btw, there is a third party LP-E6N from Blumax for example (amazon). You get 2 batteries + dual charger for 75€ I tested it with my R5 and it reads LP-E6N in the menu. Also 12 fps shooting is infact working: They are a lot cheaper than the canon batteries, while offiering compareable "on-time"

Would you recommend the r5 over the Sony fx3 for documentary work? I love canon colors& usability over Sony. What lens would you recommend? I also somewhat vlog.

Hey Todd! New subscriber here, awesome vídeo, well lit, pristine sound, full of info. There is one thing i have doubt. You showed a 128gb sandisk cfexpress card type B, but according to Canon, only the 512gb sandisk card works for 8K RAW (sony and lexar 128gb works) are you sure i can record 8K RAW on a sandisk 128gb cfexpress card?

Wondering if that Smallrig HDMI attachment is HDMI 2.1 compatible? Will it pass through 2.1 signal.
Thinking of a future use case in case I get an R5 and a Ninja V+ and need HDMI 2.1 spec for 8K or 4k120 signal

I found UUrig equipment to be cheaper and better designed. Specially the bracket to secure the mini-HDMI. I got both the Small Rig and UUrig brackets.
I first bought the Small rig HDMI bracket, worked but with flaws. The brackets that secure the cable were a little too short. The metal knob on the Small rig that tightens/loosens the bracket is multipurpose, thus when you loosens it to fasten the HDMI cable you loosens the bracket from the cage. Because the bracket tends to move around, it allows movement of the HDMI cable. I already broke 3 HDMI cables, wasn't satisfied with the mini rig bracket and could see I would break a forth cable.
In contrast, the UUrig has 2 Allen screws that fasten the bracket rock solid to the cage. In addition, there is a red lever that separately fastens the HDMI cable that's much easier to tighten firmly and loosen (the mini rig know is hard to grip to tighten adequately). The bracket is longer easily accommodating/reaching the HDMI cable. Lastly, because the mini rig as 1 fastening know, each time you have to press the bracket together, centering it to the HDMI camera port. The UUrig instead doesn't move around when loosening the bracket to insert the HDMI cable. Instead only 1 of the 2 brackets move so when you tighten it, it is centered exactly to the port, not bending that fragile mini HDMI like the mini rig tends to do.
Keep in mind I shoot with 3 cameras (2 Canons, 1 Sony) and have 3 camera rigs. The UU rig works better on all 3 cameras. Sooner or later you will change camera bodies and better to have accessories designed to adapt to other cameras.

The Ninja does have a fan, but because I record audio off-camera it isn't an issue. If I had a microphone mounted right next to the Ninja on a cage...yeah, that might be an issue for sure.

I think I linked to the one I use in the video description. It’s made by Ravpower. Third party batteries are hit and miss in my experience, but a USB charger is so much nicer than the wall outlet IMO.
