    This was my first ILC camera back in 2015. I bought it from a guy who got started shooting with it, then moved up the chain and started doing pro work.
    After it helped fuel my passion for three years, I upgraded, and sold it on to a third beginner friend of ours who's just getting into photography.
    If cameras were judged by their ability to kindle a lifelong passion, this one would be an all-star :)

    I've just bought the European version of the Rebel T3i, the EOS 600D. I bought it specifically for astrophotography. The specs of the camera, make it ideal. It has under 8000 shutter clicks too. That's always nice 😀. It's really easy to modify too. I'll upgrade the controls with the Magic Lantern firmware hack. I need the very nice internal intervalometer that Magic Lantern provides. At some point, I'll remove the infrared filter on the sensor. This'll let a lot more of the hydrogen-α wavelengths through. The glowing gas clouds in deep space nebulae, will have much more red coming through. The second hand price of this camera, has drastically fallen. Now is a great time to find one. The Canon Rebel T3i/EOS 600D camera body, is a dream item for all astrophotographers, whether they're on a budget or not 🔭😄.

    These days i use a Canon 5D mkIII but 9 years ago I purchased the Canon 600D (UK) and it was the best camera i ever bought and that still stands today, it is an amazing little camera, its been loaded up with magic lantern when that first hit the web and has been updated ever since, couple with the nifty 50 1.8 is amazing and the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM Lens for my wildlide photography and also the Sigma 150mm Macro lens which i used for movies of insects, it also house a mic jack.. but the articulated screen was a game changer and to get me even closer to the wildife was something that was ever spoke about regarding this camera and it worked amazingly well.. was the 3x Zoom feature, try searching you tube about it.. was ever hardly mentioned, if there was one camera i had to keep it would be the 600D for sure mine is still in mint condition, its also the perfect light camera to carry on holidays with the nifty 50 and does great movies. great video thank you for bringing all the nostalgia back.

    Love the video my dude, it's really nice to see a candid review from a long-time owner and not just people rattling off descriptions with affiliate links. I think this helped me choose which beginner canon to choose! In your opinion is the rebel T3i good for low-light conditions? (I see some of the clips are evening-ish looking but not quite dusk) Like better than the standard non-flagship smartphone with a decent camera? I'll be using it mainly for stills so video quality isn't a huge concern

    • @DragonRiderNetwork
      @DragonRiderNetwork  4 года назад

      Thanks! I would say the low light performance more depends on the lens you use. My Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 makes this camera almost unmatched in low light when comparing it to most smartphone cameras but with the standard kit lens it still does alright. ISO can help a lot in low light situations but the ISO at higher levels (1600 and higher) will look much more grainy than modern DSLRs today since the T3i doesn't have the kind of processing power to clean up as nicely as the newer ones. Hope this helps.

    well let's be honest here:
    Pricetag in 2022 shows the realistic spot where this camera sits
    1) for Photography it has many obsolete features. Slow burst with very small buffer, poor ISO managment (unusable above ISO 1600 even with post-production noise reduction) lack of Wifi/Bluetooth conectivity for fast delivery of pictures (extremely usefull to upload pictures to the media while action is going on) a very slow AF on live mode, and a very obsolete for current standards AF points (only 1 cross point, out of 9 in total).
    To be fair, it still packs a gorgeous image quality, and 18mpx despite what it might seem at first look, it is more than enough for any print (social media won't require more than 2mpx to be honest) but after taking a couple thousand shots with this camera, the obsolete AF system will become annoying since it will waste too much shots, specially using fast lenses
    2) For Video it also has a lot of obsolete features and will lack many others, the lack of continuous AF brings some limits for blogging, while the lack of touchscreem also means blogger can't "point finger to focus" in video mode, so he can't refocus while in front of the camera. Also being limited to 1080p 30fps it is ok for start, but not that ok for a 2nd step forward.
    T5i its almost the same as T3i but brings all 9 AF point as cross points, a slightly improved burst speed and buffer, continuous AF for video and touchscreem that brings a number of advantages compared to a legacy LCD. T6i and up to T8i bring incremental improvements, including Wifi/Bluetooth, more megapixels, better AF, dual pixel for video AF, improved burst and ISO handling, even a limited 4K video reccording can be done.
    If videomaking its out of the question Canon T6 will lack the articulated LCD but will have improved conectivity with same sensor and T5i's Autofocus, so it will trade blows with T3i.
    It is hard for me to suggest to anyone to buy a T3i, having so much better options around even in the used market. The pricetag might be good, but it is best to save 200 extra bucks and buy a more modern camera that won't present limits you'll have to work around from scratch. Or in other words, as a beginner you'll want a camera that can still be usefull once you have learned the basics (that will take only about 1/2 year to be learned). Back to where i started... no wonder why there are so many at sale and pricetag is so low, many bloggers, indy filmmakers and youtubers purchased this camera back in the day, making it very popular, yet nowadays they have moved away, maybe selling it to a photography or video student, which also needs to move away from it... so it might end up in the hands of an extremely budget limited photo student, who will get the most out of this gear, but not in the hands of a videomaker... in an era in which almost everybody is increasingly considering video features since they will be using it for content creation.

      Hi there! I'm considering to buy this camera for 120$ (im from the Philippines) But, Im also considering getting the D3100 by Nikon for 150$ with a 50mm prime lens and kit lens; which one should i get?

    • @harrison00xXx
      @harrison00xXx 2 года назад +1

      @@ubecheesepandesal the nikon is definately more bang for the buck, but it also depends on condition.
      I got once a 550D (T3 without i? at least very similar to the T3i) for 70$ in 2016 or so, but it was COMPLETELY FKED UP, only worked nice but handgrip fell apart and the internal flash didnt open by itself (needed a manual push)

    • @harrison00xXx
      @harrison00xXx 2 года назад +1

      Well, i dont get the video part that much at new cameras. I mean, ofc if they can do it, why not implement it.
      But the main reason for DSLRs or mirrorless cameras is still PHOTOS.
      Sure the T3i sucks even at photos, but even for my usecase i can run a 550D as astrocamera. It is just fine for plate solving at higher ISOs and when starting imaging im reducing the ISO to 400, sometimes even 200 but exposure times of up to 600 seconds.
      I would be a lot quicker when using my newer and much better EOS RP with usable ISO 6400-12800, but here are the downsides: PIXEL SIZE. The 26MP Fullframe sucks in pixel size. With enough time, the small Eos 550D sensor with 18MP produce better images than the Eos RP, too big sensor. Just awesome for any regular stuff, but for astrophotography i still love my old 550D!

  • @pepefrog6524
    @pepefrog6524 2 года назад +1

    Oh man I got this camera with a 18-55mm lens 75-300 mm lens also got a 50 mm lens with two chargers two batteries a case. With two 64 gb SD cards for 300. Like brand new condition

    • @harrison00xXx
      @harrison00xXx 2 года назад

      Yeah they are basically "cheap af", but the problem - mostly you also get only the 18-55 lenses without IS, let alone USM. Same goes for the 55-250 or 70/75-300mm lenses, most sell the cheaper ones without IS and as i got now more and more problems with my 75-300mm IS USM (but expected, its old af!) with the stabilizer which is somehow vibrating and shaking the images more than without IS on.... you basically get old, cheap stuff.
      I also sold my 400D (brand new looking, barely used since it was a spare/2nd cam) with the stock 18-55 and a heavily abused 28-105mm USM for cheap, why not
      But trust me, you cant compare such an old camera to anything newer, especially the new mirrorless systems! I risked it and bought a Canon EOS RP (already "only" the RP and it was way over budget, i really would have loved the R5 with stabilized sensor!)
      The Eos RP is so AWESOME, i wont go into detail, but only when used indoors or with less light, DAAAAMN usable ISO 12800 out of camera (especially at canons JPEG compression), even 25600 with little editing of raw file (or jpeg out of the box) is usable.
      If you also wish more controls over your settings you can easily use the control ring adapter to EF mount or if you are rich enough even the RF-EF adapter with the filter insert (awesome stuff, but overpriced AF, only make sense if you need all your filters on probably every lens you got). I personally would have loved the filter adapter for using a clear filter which basically protects the sensor from dust then.
      Whats a shame in my opinion... the more i used the Eos RP... the more i connected easily my iPad wireless with the canon camera app and let it copy all the images i took in "real time" to the iPad which then got wireless synced to the notebook... instead of using the raw files from SD card for better quality. I mean the major point of a proper DSLR/mirrorless is better image quality/more detailes, then you go the "consumer"/0815 way by using jpegs/wireless stuff anyway
      At least i cant go back to my 550D i still use (on a telescope only and permanent attached) or any other camera which doesnt perform aswell as the RP. Especially the high ISO performance, the better autofocus compared to any DSLR i used (also on any EF lens improved!) and some software tricks which help a lot (for example shutter times automatically gets faster when you use a tele lens at higher focal lengh to counter the bigger wiggle, something the 550D didnt do and i had to control manually.

    I began to love my 550D (not 600D/T3i, but basically the same with fixed screen) again as i found out it just works great as astrocamera (with its pixel density especially)
    As much i really like my Fullframe Eos RP for anything beyong astrophotography i have since a while.... for usage on my anyways "too small" 750mm F4 newtonian for deep sky astrophotography... i easily dont get enough detail since the pixels are "huge", meanwhile the good old, "only" 18MP APS-C sized 550D is even usable as planetary camera with a 3x barlow on 750mm, but therefor i still prefer my mono astro camera which is normally used for guiding only since it got even a higher pixel density (i think 2MP on VERY TINY sensor)

    So yeah, I purchased this camera almost 9 years ago and I never really used it. Now that I'm thinking about starting a RUclips channel I'm wondering if this camera would be good to use. Would this camera be ok to used? What type of upgrades would I need?

    • @DragonRiderNetwork
      @DragonRiderNetwork  4 года назад

      For the most part, this camera with the standard lens included (or bought separately) should e more than adequate for starting a RUclips channel. As I said in the video, if you don't absolutely need 4K video, this camera is still one of the best DSLRs you can start out with.

    Will the t3i and a sigma 18-35mm allow me to get rolling shots of cars going 45-55mph? Or is it uncapable of that because of autofocus?

    • @DragonRiderNetwork

      Depends on the kind of shot you are going for. But the lens does have manual focus as well.

    Hello, I was hoping you could answer a few questions for me ;) - I recently acquired an old Canon Rebel XT with some lenses, and I was planing on upgrading to the T3i since it seems a lot better than the XT. I was wondering if the lenses my XT came with are compatible with the T3i, and would this set up work good for starting out in astrophotography and some landscape photos? - The lenses are ~
    - Canon Efs 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6
    - Canon Efs 35-80mm 1:4-5.6
    - Canon Efs 80-200mm 1:4.5-5.6
    - Quantaray for Canon AF 145-400mm 1:4.5-5.6
    - Also an assortment of uv haze filters, polarizers, wide angle hood, etc.
    I’m going to be doing some more reading on these accessories and photography in general to get a better understanding of everything so I can get out there and start taking photos! But I was curious on your thoughts if these lenses with a T3i would work out well for starting out, and if you recommend anything else I should get it would need. Sorry for the long noob comment, thanks for your time !

      OK so I think mine stopped recording because I was running out of storage and my SD card was only 8 GB. Now I use a 16 GB SD card and don't store a lot on it and I can now record for 12 minutes. I also sometimes need to format the SD card to delete back-up storage.

    Thank you so much for this video! I purchased a new but “open box” special from futureship about 7 years ago now. And at that time it was a huge discount from what they were selling for. I love my camera, and I’m looking for the next lense to be compatible with it for product photography. What lens would you recommend?

    Hi. I was just about to sell my Rebel T3i but you’ve changed my mind in five minutes. Thank you. Why did I want to sell it? Because the video doesn’t have auto-focus and I find that it’s difficult to focus on yourself if you’re trying to record yourself. If that makes any sense haha. Any tips for that?? Thank you in advance.

      I usually keep it on CineStyle which gives it more of a flat image. This allows more flexibility editing afterwards. I also recommend the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 which is what I use for video.

      @@datboi2886 I honestly could not tell you that although the transfers of their files are through the USB interface or directly from the chip that the camera writes to. the movies (which I don't work with much) are in .mov files - which like .jpg, .png, gif, etc. are ISO data formats. Data is data, so I'm sure that they can be processed on any machine (Apple, Microsoft and others ). Since many computer platforms are using intel-based chips in them (the only big difference between the machines above are the operating systems, and most software packages (for processing video or stills) are written in portable sw development languages that are meant to work on multiple OS platforms, AND that camera manufacturers know that, they can be processed.

      if u plan on shooting videos with the subject moving in the frame a lot then yes the constant live-view autofocus is very necessary. If youre just making youtube videos where you are stationary or vlogging where you can set up your shot before hand then its not really that important.

There are diff specs of course but like he said it’s good to understand the basics and how to handle the camera. Mostly focused on photography. So I def recommend. BUT also do your own research as you might fight true other two of more comfort.
