I was so ecstatic when we he removed the glossy top panel and the fan is so open and easily accesible with the screws exposed, finally we dont have to tear the whole thing apart to just clean or change a clogged or failing fan.
My problem is exactly this. The OG ps5 had the ssd located in the front, where cool air is sucked in to the fan, now it is directly above the heatsink fins and a console is rearly set up to pull air in from the back where they exhaust the heat, it would just recirculate the heat. This way the ssd sits in a no mans land directly above a very hot metal object
@@admirkaralic7209 there are m.2 drives that are fast enough to get too hot in themselves in a pc with tons of airflow... in the ps5 they sit in a closed compartment with a cover to make sure they get 0 airflow and now they put the main heatsink directly under it. I think it is risky
I kinda like the four panels set up. To me It gives more options for color panel customizations. If both official or 3rd party color panels are available. Honestly, I like the slim design more.
I kinda think Sony went with the new split design because the disc drive add-on probably comes with a shell piece to match when purchased separately, and they wanted to cut the cost of the plastic shell. It does seem like it has the added bonus of more color mix and match options though. I wonder if third party accessories are going to make use of the disc drive port?
The packaging for an add-on disc drive that required a whole side plate would have been a fair bit bigger. And one of the more less-spoken-about aspects of cost reductions in slimming down consoles is the ability to reduce packaging size(and weight). Shipping and warehousing considerations are quite a non-negligible part of costs.
Still no idea why they went with a glossy panel on the top, though :/ Honestly, that and the horizontal """"stand"""" are the worst things about this new version
@andrebrait people where complaining about the old stand in horizontal configuration saying you couldn't move the unit with it falling off, and some other things. I dont sit there and stare at the system, it plays the games and that all i need it to do. Dont care about seeing the plastic feet thing. I think they could have provided a vertical stand with the digital model since it would need the support, but disk model doesn't. Of course you'd have people complaining about that.
Those feet and the horizontal placement of the PS5 looks like a luxury hill side mansion house, kinds like those type of house like the one you pull down in GTAV!
The original PS5 cooling was designed for the 7nm chip. As the node process shrank, the original cooling became "over dimensioned". It will help Sony cut costs while meeting 6nm thermal output more closely.
Power consumption is rated the same with the fat and slim, so same heat amount, 7nm to 6nm is irrelevant regarding heat, it's like original PS3 chip which went from 90nm all the way down to 40, and 200W's of power consumption while gaming down to 80W with the slim.
@@Jaffacall3251 There are 3 different version of the fat PS5. The original chip has a massive copper heat copper heat sink. Then the second version has a smaller but still massive heatsink. Then the latest fat PS5 has that small heatsink because of the newer chip. Pretty sure that is the same chip in the slim since I can't see Sony paying $250M just to do a complete rework of the same chip. Going from 7nm to 6nm is just an optical shrink. But going down to 5nm or 4nm needs a complete rework.
I think the redeign is quite nice actually from an engineering perspective, especially the tool-less disk slot removal and the super efficient cooling system they were able to come up with. And I can imagine with some sleek matte dark plates, this console would look even better
I agree, I personally prefer it. It has a sleeker design, it's smaller and with some nice darkplates will look great. My issue is more with regards to pricing. Selling the vertical stand separately for £30 just seems kinda slimy. And at the same time the price is increasing.
Probably, the black line on the side is because of the disc drive. If you buy the digital version, you can still purchase and add the disc drive. It will come with a new side plate section which will be a lot easier to include in the packaging.
Looks fine, I would prefer all matte, but the glossy finish doesn't look bad to me. The 4 piece plates opens the door to more creative designs. I'm fine with the horizontal stand, the original was kind of overengineered and the console never needed a vertical stand, now the new stand, two simple pieces, easy to put in and the console looks cool, like floating.
I was waiting for a smaller PS5, and this is it, so I guess that's that. I think the Dbrand plates previewed early in the video would definitely class it up-that glossy section is going to start to show dust pretty early on.
Same. Waited for that reason. They might use more efficient chips in the model after this, but who knows when. Makes me worried that this will really have worse thermals. I wonder if they put the same Chip because they had production issues with the 5nm or because they first want to empty their inventory of old chips. They are actually rushing the release in the US, so that the Americans can buy it before Black friday. Europe and the rest of the world seem to je getting it months later. I wonder if that's the reason they put a similar or same chip in order to make it in time
@@maythesciencebewithyou It's actually not as easy to just go with 5nm if the original design is on 7nm. The 7nm and 6nm are basically the same, where the "shrinking" is done by just getting better at making the 7nm, but the 5nm is another step in shrinking so the design for the chip has to be done again. They probably could do it, it should be easier to re-design existing 7nm chip to 5nm than to make 5nm chip from scratch, but it still takes engineering and new deals with AMD. It's really not worth it, especially if you want to keep the cost down since 6nm is cheaper than 5nm as well.
this is really good actually they managed to reduce power consumption in the 1200 series and now have reduced the the overall size, they have managed to get a process where the power consumption and body size are independant to each other. they can eventually release a newer version of this being even light when the rest of the industry stops hogging the 3-5 nm chips, there is very likely not enough capacity to accomodate PS5's needs on those processes.
I hated how the PS5 looked when it released, so ugly and clunky and why white? But now I'm glad I got one anyway, because the "updated" version is somehow even more ugly.
Pretty sure you want the stand because it vents out from the bottom and if its covered it just traps in heat. If you look at the stand even on the old model it has a nice gap inbetween to allow air to escape.

The original ps5 already had the 6nm shrink with a reduced size heat sink, similar to this one. Apparently they just transferred that design with some tweaking maybe

There is no way it wouldn't have reduced power draw if it were 5nm. Thats half the reason to do it otherwise it just costs them more despite the die size reduction due to node shrink. The heatsinks are almost the same size as the third revision of the ps5 that was on 6nm.
I removed both covers, those vents and even fan shroud just to improve cooling. It just stands on my desk completely bare and i like the look of it so much more.

Hmm, unlike previous slim designs that was very much a redesign from an aesthetic point of view to push sales 3+ years on from launch, this one feels more like a manufacturing optimization design. I guess with the shortage on the original over the past few years they focused on getting more products out there than trying anything fancy.
My guess is, its not too much smaller, so the airflow going thru tighter spaces is still adequate. Might even increase the air speed so it balances out in the end as far as head dissipation goes. I like this teardown video. The manufacturers in cases like this should just do one if odds are high people would do it anyway. They would have all the details we're guessing on.
Good theory, similar to how some gaming laptops can get away with less fans even when pulling more power than other laptops, due to how the air flows through the system. Adding mire fans does not necessarily mean the system will be cooler if the extra air is not going anywhere useful, if you can perfectly control that airflow you may be able to add less fans. It seems to me that due to the console being skinner (not so much smaller but less thickness), this means the air is forced through the system a bit more. This will cool the system down about the same degree in temperature as the system rose due to being shrunk (I am not sure how to type that but you get my point hopefully). - Afterall, Sony designed this so they probably took the thickness into account and found a sweet-spot where it looks decent but also helps the cooling.
I've never cared about aesthetics too much when it comes to electronics... until i saw the ps5. I usually wait a few years before upgrading consoles anyways and was kind of holding out for the slim model/ price to go down a tad. I think its alright. People expect too much. like the ps4 slim wasn’t so different from the original. The point of a slim version is to be smaller + lighter.
PS4 Slim had a revised 16nm chip that was massively more efficient than the original, and also came with a price cut. The original PS4 was also already a reasonably compact machine, so there was less room for improvement on that front. This new PS5 is not a proper Slim model, and it was only done to reduce costs for Sony, all while they've raised prices for us. It's a scumbag move.

I thought one of the main goals for releasing a slim version was also to cut purchase cost. Like when ps4 slim came out it was $300 instead of $400 like the regular ps4 and then they released a pro model at the $400 price point. So if this slim model is still $500 do we expect the ps5 pro to be $600 or more?
Not just that. A reduced power consumption was also an important point when resigning the consoles. But here it's still the same which makes it this new PS5 entirely pointless unless you don't have space for the big old one
Do not not expect a PS5 Pro, Sony is selling too much PS5 to feel the need to launch a pro edition which will split the console and that may increase the time spent by game developers to design their games.

2:45 It will be interesting to see how the SSD thermals will be on the slim console considering that it’s located closer towards the cooling fan now.
@@norbertnagy4468 Matters not. Thermals will never be hot enough to impact M.2 performance anyway.

I can't imagine it looking good having that side panel be a different color than the rest.
Thats good for you :)
Still no idea why they went with a glossy panel on the top, though :/
Honestly, that and the horizontal """"stand"""" are the worst things about this new version
@@andrebrait it's a design throwback both to the PS2 Slim and the base PS4, both of which had a half-matte/half-gloss aesthetic.
Maybe after market plates makers could sell a design of only one plate per side?
Those feet and the horizontal placement of the PS5 looks like a luxury hill side mansion house, kinds like those type of house like the one you pull down in GTAV!
The 4 panel setup is so you can add the disc drive to the digital version.
The front vents on PS5 are intakes, not exhaust. 😅

@axolotl8527 instead of making meaningless reply, why not actually give a legit reason. Are you just sheeping behind what people on Twitter are saying
I agree, I personally prefer it. It has a sleeker design, it's smaller and with some nice darkplates will look great.
My issue is more with regards to pricing. Selling the vertical stand separately for £30 just seems kinda slimy. And at the same time the price is increasing.
@@Patrick-y4d1zyes I don't like they' sell it separately but I'm used to it since they did it for PS4 and ps2
His reply wasn't meaningless. The design is so objectively ugly that OP's comment doesn't warrant anything more than the fact it sucks.
I actually prefer this design except for the glossy panelling

Dbrand crying right now on the overstock of third party plates
There will be an all-matte black cover for the new PS5 in early 2024.
The fact that it can be easily removed makes it so customization is the solution
I was waiting for a smaller PS5, and this is it, so I guess that's that. I think the Dbrand plates previewed early in the video would definitely class it up-that glossy section is going to start to show dust pretty early on.
The reduced size is good but what i always want on Slim models is the lower power consumption
I wonder if that's the reason they put a similar or same chip in order to make it in time
They could have used a newer chip that may not be much more powerful than the original but yet will be much more efficient
same. I'll keep waiting, I don't see the compelling exclusives.

Old model looks more Premium.
I've never cared about aesthetics too much when it comes to electronics... until i saw the ps5. I usually wait a few years before upgrading consoles anyways and was kind of holding out for the slim model/ price to go down a tad. Idk at least its not literally 10lbs
Wonderful the motherboard is filmed with a Sony, hi hi hi whether that was intentional... possible, but it looked cool :)
They should have hired DIYPerks for the design..

Bingo 🫶🏻
Not just that. A reduced power consumption was also an important point when resigning the consoles. But here it's still the same which makes it this new PS5 entirely pointless unless you don't have space for the big old one
Do not not expect a PS5 Pro, Sony is selling too much PS5 to feel the need to launch a pro edition which will split the console and that may increase the time spent by game developers to design their games.
