    I'd like to try and clear something up. A lot of people keep commenting that General Grievous first appeared in the 2003 2D animated Clone Wars series from Cartoon Network so therefore, he must have been designed for that show first before appearing in Episode III which was released in 2005.
    Pre-production work for Episode III began just a few days after the May 16, 2002 release of Episode II. One first things that usually happens in pre-production is the art department designing different characters, ships, locations etc. with the director, in this case George Lucas, giving rough ideas to the concept artists and then working with them and fleshing out the different designs, as can be seen in this video. Warren Fu created this particular concept art for Grievous (later being used as Grievous' Magna Guards) 3.bp.blogspot.com/-kqATh3VMHe8/UvT0ozdE__I/AAAAAAAAj-s/4EdETNE4J2A/s1600/MagnaGuard_bts.jpg which can be seen in this video at 4:10 and is dated the 14th of November 2002 (as seen in the jpg). In this video it states that one week after showing George their initial designs, Warren Fu submitted the concept art for Grievous that George approved. I can't find a copy of that exact design but this one external-preview.redd.it/DjlgVJYnidQrlCPzNY6SIp0hcKvSEl489lMEBUA0-MU.jpg?auto=webp&s=5c4b685ef4f771adda395d324f3e5b048781b57c is dated the 6th of December 2002.
    Season One of the 2D animated Clone Wars series first aired on the 7th of November 2003. Season Two first aired on the 26th of March 2004 with General Grievous first appearing in Season Two, Chapter 20 which aired on the 8th of April 2004. I can't find a definitive date that Clone Wars started pre-production, but there is at least eleven months between the concept art dates mentioned above and the release of season one of Clone Wars and around fifteen months between the release of Season Two leaving plenty of time for Grievous to be fully fleshed out for Episode III then being redesigned to fit in with the artwork of Clone Wars.
    Thus, Grievous was designed for Episode III well before appearing in the 2D animated Clone Wars.

      Well they kinda fucked Grevious all together in canon but in legends he was a scary ass mf, handling multiple jedi masters, loud foot steps to signify impending doom the whole badass villain aesthetic. But then they fucked him up in canon instead of letting his cough be attributed to Mace Windu crushing his chest. Scariest thing bout him is his wasted potential. Taking a Jedi stomping badass and turning him into a little bitch lmao

      Keyboard Warrior wasn’t in episode III it was the cartoon adaption that took place between I believe II and III and it introduced grevious as a character before the movie so people had an idea of what would happen between episodes II and III then they made III where he was a bitch then people assumed it was because of his crushed chest but no they made the newer clone wars which became canon and the old one became legends. So they turned a badass character in canon to a little bitch. He’s still dope in legends

    This was Lucas's genius ... hiring people more talented than him to shape the universe he had in his head. Then, he already has an idea of what he's been looking for but he still does not know exactly what it is and as soon as he finds it ... everything comes alive. It is creativity and imagination at its best, then that drawing will be an animated character, with a characteristic personality. The people who do not appreciate the prequels do not have IDEA of the luck that we have that they exist, at the level of performance they may not be perfect, but ... GOD! When I saw Grievous back in the 2003 Cartoon Network clone wars series, I thought he was the biggest, the baddest, and the best creation ever. He slaughtered 4 Jedi in one episode and that was unheard of to me. One of the jedi he bested (not killed) being Ki-Adi Mundi one of my favorite Jedi. And I thought he was a droid with lightsabers and it was awesome. But as his story got bigger and better it became known that he was more than just a simple droid. I think the concept art at 5:16 would've been a better look in the films. If he was entirely hidden in a cloak except for that creepy head it would've been a cool reveal for him to sweep aside his cloak for a fight with Obi-wan and reveal some freakish mangled body part-alien and part-droid with four arms all wielding sabers.

    • @CLSGL
      @CLSGL 9 лет назад +19

      +Ben Zombie Not too sure if I agree. If his body was entirely covered, 1) he wouldnt have been able to kneel when talking to Sidious, 2)when he breaks the glass and launches himself into space, an overcoat wouldn't have let him do that, and 3) it would have interfered with his menacing hunched over walk.
      Also his body being completely covered would've been way too close to him looking like Vader or any other Sith lord for that matter. And he's just a general. I think the simple cape suits him perfectly. :)

    • @TheDylandProductions
      @TheDylandProductions 4 года назад

      I think he was referring to stylistically. All villains in the series up 'til that point, aside from the morally ambiguous Fetts, wore dark cloaks or dark armor. Darth Vader was known as 'more machine than man' since 1977 - and although for the final prequel Lucas wanted something to mimic that same idea/concept, he didn't want an outright Vader clone.
      In the Expanded Universe (and I presume the Disney canon too) the elements of Darth Vader's suit (all of them - mask included) were common medical parts used throughout the galaxy for heavy injuries. Lucas very well could have copped out and made up some plot about Grievous utilizing the same armor - and Anakin eventually inheriting it or something.
      But I, for one, am glad he didn't. Instead, we got a really great, new, villain design. I also really like how, up til this point, all droids were some variation of tan/brown or silver/blue. The clones were the only troopers wearing white. (And both sides often had symbolic bright colorings too - to signify rank) Grievous was cold and ruthless - and sported an interweaving of metal and white plating. Really stark looking compared to the other droids. Especially with his blood red cape too!
      Loved Grievous in the 2D Clone Wars series. And he turned out decently in the film too. (Although certainly more toned down/underpowered) I think it was genius for Lucas to have this mostly droid general foreshadow Anakin's fall - while wearing ying/yang opposite colors too! :D

      The writing in all three kinda sucked.
      Strange and unnatural dialog, some disconnected plot lines etc.
      What I think George should have done is what he did here!
      Hired talented people and just sort of pointed out the general idea of what he wanted. Some kind of conflict, embargo on a planetary level. And they come up with a more logical embargo like Cuba missile crises in space or something. I want something dark, but still human interaction. And a writer writes Sopranos level quality dialog and so on...
      Afterwards George would just have had to pick what he liked.

In the Clone Wars miniseries he was just pure badass, in the movie he was noticeably weaker but he still had some skill, but in the 2008 Clone Wars he was just pathetic. I enjoy the fact it isn't confirmed by Lucas in this about those "two doids" with the staffs there being general grievous... but ended up keeping the exact designs as the guards and special soldiers of the general known as the magnaguards. But props to the guy who drew a droid shaped like a human skeleton, that had a literal human heart and human like eyes despite having a completely robotic body. Insane design. Probably one of the best character designs. Like hate for the prequels aside. I loved them a lot, watched all the stars wars in order rather in time of release as kid. If your new to the series you have to watch 1-6 as is, not new hope to jedi and than prequels. But the design for darth maul, unique but was later given one of the deepest most human like personalities of any character. Count dooku, sported a very similar look and attitude as well personality to a jedi, which he once was, turned and trained by the dark side. Grievous though, brilliant, didn't need a major back story or any personality. Just the fact he was a skeleton like being, resembled death, his only objective was murder jedi. Took their lightsabers as trophies. Wielded lightsabers of dead jedi and talked like a true bad guy, but spoke like a human and even coughed and breathed like he was constantly dying. Well, he did have organs. But all that made his character even more unique. Probably my favorite bad guy other than darth vader (both anakin and lord vader).

    I watched this behind the scenes series two years ago during the first weeks of my school exchange year. I had ups and downs and my emotions ranged from sad to happy. Now I am rewatching it for the third time and everytime I hear the intro from ROTS Webisodes I get flashbacks and relive feelings of moments I had already forgotten. Everytime I hear that intromusic I get chills.
    All in all watching BTS of the Prequels and ROTS in particular is almost better than watching the movies themselves.
    Thanks for uploading!

    I love watching concept artists and particularly character designers work. One day I want to be in one of those studios taking part in a process like that. One day.

    Part of me wants to see the 'child in a floating chair guarded by two droids' concept realized in Star Wars. For one, it'd be funny. And two, it'd be fun to see an old concept brought to fruition

    My favorite character in all of the Star Wars universe!! It's a shame he wasn't used to his full potentially on the big screen but at least he is in the comics, and animated shows. Best Jedi slayer ever! Not a Sith and no force powers and still kicksass!

    Thats got to be an amazing feeling, finishing a drawing at the last minute, the director not only picks it but knows instantly that's the character, and you've ended up creating one of the coolest villains in the SW canon. Imagine walking through a department store and seeing your character on T-shirts and action figures.

    Definitely could see some of the designs did not go to waste, and became the Magna Guards.
    And it looks like one of them became Trench, seen in The Clone Wars. So all isn't lost.
