Great video! What is it about the inverter being bad that makes it physically hard to start? I could see it not having spark but it being hard to pull makes me scratch my head?
Hey Taryl, how did you determine the problem was the inverter based off of the code? How did you know there wasn't an issue with the GCU or the wiring in between? Is there any other technique to ensure the problem is the inverter before buying that expensive part? Would the code be different for those types of issues? Thanks
@@CountryRock2k1 The fact that the component is mounted on grommets indicates Honda thought it needed it for vibration isolation. Hi got one of these gens and when I try to start it sounds like it’s grinding. Also won’t pull super hard to pull barley moves. I tried the test you showed but still same grinding, won’t start. I'm a fan but what is the value of a inverter engine generator vs. a regular generator? In what application does the client need electrical power with such low distortion specs? Most all modern electronics can handle the amount of distortion from most any engine generator you buy without using a expensive inverter unless I am mistaken or missing something and I am ignorant why clients spend so much on inverter engine generators. I love the patience you demonstrate in your technical explanations and how you deal with your clients. I assume your skits screen plays come from the exchanges you have had in years past with dealing with joe and jane public hearing their many concerns and doing all you can to help them resolve their problems with their equipment and systems. Godspeed.
Thanks for your videos, Have you ever heard of a chick shaft and throttle shaft seize, I just cleaned my sthil 4 mixed carb with gumout carb cleaner and now both shafts are almost impossible to move

Good job on the repair Taryl! Jr, "Jessie", Chainsaw Guy...laughter is the best medicine...Thanks! I wonder if all these electronic assemblies are sealed up for weather protection...or...for concern about copying the circuit design?
This may be a good time to start learning electronic soldering skills and to troubleshoot electronic failures. Most likely, it's one or more of the capacitors that have failed. An ESR Meter can identify a failed capacitor. Also, look for bulging and leaking capacitors. Capacitors can store high voltage. Discharge the capacitors.
The problem here is that all the circuitry is covered with rock hard epoxy for waterproofing. good luck with accessing and changing over bad components. nothing will disolve epoxy.
hey taryl i have a Honda generator similar to this that i can get to start but wont stay on, it has a switch for idle control when your not pulling any power it will fun fine on full throttle but the second i turn the switch on for throttle control its dies out, i have checked the spark and the spark isnt dieing when it shuts down i have a new carb on it as well. any ideas on what it could be?
@Taryl Fixes All Hi Tarydactil , I have same type of generator but mine is Honda em25 (2.3kw, 220v) cycloconverter generator but I got it without electronics (module , inverter and front panel), just engine with flywheel (drum) and coils inside . I wonder if Harbor Freight makes a similar 6500 watt inverter generator? People call Harbor Freight engines, Honda clones, I,have heard them called Chondas before too.(Chinese Honda’s). My thoughts were to get the inverter from Harbor Freight if it’s cheaper. I have ordered parts from Harbor Freight before and got them, took a while but I got them. Must have been on one of those slow boats from China.
Is there a way to keep that $800 part from crapping out or is it an inherent problem we just have to deal with? Honda makes good stuff so it seems strange.
Heat kills inverters. If you run it for a long time close to its max capacity, you'll shorten its life. Making sure it can get some air (not in a confined space) helps, too. Try to buy a generator that puts out 50% more than what you plan to use it for on a sustained basis so it stays underloaded.
Since these things usually sit outside for part of their lives, I use a copious amount of dielectric grease on the electrical connections to weatherproof them…keeps them from turning green…
I've been a small engine mechanic for a long time but you're the smartest man I've seen so far

I'd like to unpot that module and see what $2 parts broken. You guys put on a good show keep them coming. Lots of good information.
how did you determine it was the inverter? I'll watch again 2 see if I missed that part
Got my Taryl apparel this week couldn't be happier.

Dead short loading the generator. On railway locomotives they call it dynamic braking.
Great info Taryl, especially the test sequence. Thanks bro
I will never buy a inverter generator. Thanks Taryl.
Best wishes from Brazil, we love you guys.

$800 plus but doesn't come with 2 grommets, makes you shake your head.
My 1st thoughts, Crazy
Why would they send more grommets if the ones on the machine are still good? Waste of time and money to replace small parts that can be reused.

my best friend and I fixed his 2' craftsman snowblower off your video. Thanks T aryl. !
Tarly do they have a core charge on the old part and do they re-manufacture it question .
Will it still start if you disconnect the whole inverter?
Hey Taryl, something you never mention what normally takes out the inverter on these Honda inverter generators??
cheap capacitors and or vibration.
Good job on the repair Taryl! Jr, "Jessie", Chainsaw Guy...laughter is the best medicine...Thanks! I wonder if all these electronic assemblies are sealed up for weather protection...or...for concern about copying the circuit design?
Yes. Weather, Vibration, Copy protection...and MAKING MORE MONEY when it fails.
Inverters are great because the engine can quiet Idle and still stay at 60Hz unlike non-inverter AC power engines stay at 3600 RPM for 60Hz output.
$800 parts, $200 labor, 20 min of work, my kind of day. Good job Taryl.
