    I'm in The Peak District for episode 4 of Stills in Motion, and today I'm talking about Photography Aspect Ratios, and why aspect ratios were a huge part of my decision to shoot with Micro Four Thirds. I also talk about how I post process with different aspect ratios for printing and client work.

    I'm so glad I paid attention to this one because at 2:55 you said "as long as I shoot in RAW I don't lose any of the data outside of that crop." That wasn't true with older Panasonic cameras (they used to crop the RAWs) so I had that ingrained in my habits and was avoiding setting other aspects for framing, even in my more recent cameras... until now! Now I can return to setting aspects again!

    I used to often shoot in 3:2 because when I printed it would fill the usual photo paper and I liked the classic look. However, a couple of years ago I switched to 4:3 because I was taking more macro shots which I feel benefit from this aspect ratio. I prefer 4:3 now and it is also handy that the sensor size is 4:3 :-) I do sometimes crop to another aspect ratio, sometimes if it is of a landscape because I want to create a wider look.

Might be cool to watch an uncut video, I usually struggle to watch anything that’s long (just due to time constraints) but I could watch it in 10-15 minute chunks. Also I’m really tempted to save up for a G9. I’ve only been taking photos for about 8 months though so it’s probably a stupid idea and The G80 is really nice to use. Regarding aspect ratios I generally stick to 16:9 for RUclips, Facebook, Twitter and my website, 4:5 for Instagram and A sizes for prints. You've got me thinking about working in 1:1 which I think might really suit more the intimate landscapes which I am working on at the moment.

    3:2 I think is the standard on the d500 and honestly I got so used to it for my sunset photography, or any for that matter, that I don't really change it. On the other hand for the aviation stuff I do, I usually do 16x9 wide.

    • @RealRaynedance
      @RealRaynedance 4 года назад

      3:2 is the standard on all APS-C and full frame cameras because that's the way the sensors are shaped. So yeah, that'd be what your D500 shoots.
      It's M4/3, most typical medium format cameras (some are 3:2), and most point-and-shoots that are 4:3 by nature.

    Nice video James! I was surprised to see what there are very few videos regarding 4:3 aspect ratio vs 3:2. Personally, for me it was hardest part after switching to m43. All my life I were shooting on 3:2 (except some short time on 645), so I were looking at the world and planing my shot using 3:2 and at the first weeks with m43, everytime I had a slight "oops moment" - image in viewfinder is different :) but honestly I totally agree with you - 4:3 is very convenient. Not too wide for horizontal, not too narrow for verticals. Thanks again for bringing this topic and creating dedicated video.

    Thanks for covering the topic and explaining your rational approach. I also shoot micro 4:3 partly because of the aspect ratio. Funny how I remember advice from two professionals - who I respect enormously; one who said to always let the scene dictate the crop and another who said to always set the crop in the field according to the intended display. I suppose that's why it's important to learn from several teachers.

    Switched to 16x9 for almost all crops about two years ago and never looked back. I just realized that with 95% of the enjoyment/viewing being on phones/TVs/digital picture frames, I should just give in and use the available real estate. I've come to love it now and can see the crop in-camera as I've just trained myself to ignore the areas I know I'll crop.

    On the Lumix LX100ii (probably the first version as well, but I have only got the second version). You get to choose aspect ratio on the lens itself. I have had fun using it. It is the same as other Lumix cameras in the menus...but different in terms of dials. It is a really good pocket camera, the best I have ever used.

  • @MeAMuse
    @MeAMuse 4 года назад

    Aspect ratio is an important part of composition and really helps you tell a story. I you shoot wide - it accentuates horizontal lines (e.g. shooting a bunch of uniform trees will accentuate how many trees there are). If you shoot vertical.... it accentuates the vertical lines (e.g. so in the same area - you would be accentuating the height of the trees). As you move closer to square - you move to a situation where you are saying their importance is equal. I typically shoot in my cameras standard aspect ratio.... but am consciously thinking of how the elements should interact (your jigsaw puzzle pieces).

    Great video on an often overlooked topic. I've been on 3:2 for almost my entire photographic life, but recently (partly due to Instagram) found myself shooting 1:1 on studio portraits more often. You made a very compelling argument for MFT though... Should dive into that as well. As you said, practice practice...

  • @carlmcneill1139
    @carlmcneill1139 4 года назад

    Some of the first videos I watched when I got my camera said to fill the frame. That's what I did. They didn't mention choosing an aspect ratio or leaving room around the subject to crop if you needed a different aspect ratio. I learned that lesson the hard way. I try to use different composition rules but I leave a little room in case I want to crop. I have both an APS-C camera and a full frame camera. I mainly shoot in 3:2 ratio. If I'm taking portraits for someone I don't know what size print they'll want. They may want several different size prints of a particular pose. I know I can switch the ratio in camera with the same pose but then it's not very efficient.

  • @JohnDrummondPhoto
    @JohnDrummondPhoto 4 года назад +1

    I use a FF DSLR with a 30 MP sensor. So, since that's pretty flexible for cropping, I compose using the full 3:2 ratio (the colon denotes a ratio BTW). I usually have a 4:3 or 5:4 final image in mind but I shoot wider to leave room for cropping or resizing if needed.

    Entertaining, great visual appeal, solid strategy & technique advice, and a good classic exercise demonstration. You fired on all cylinders as usual.
    The first person perspective was nice, as was showing the subtle framing differences at the pond. Narrowing down the perspective choices at the end of the process is probably one of the biggest factors in squeezing the best image out of what is in front of you.

  • @JanneRanta

    Great video as always... I was there this Saturday just gone, one of my favourite places :-) Also I have done a similar experiment at this location. I have been there with just the Wide angle then next visit a telephoto rather than swapping out lenses. Its then great to compare both sets of images to see how you can get the most from each lens, what works and what don't. Also I was surprised how many good compositions I could find with the telephoto I couldn't see with the wide angle, will try different crop ratios next :-)

    Shooting in 4:3 aspect ratio has the advantage that you can later crop the pictures to the other aspect ratios. The trick is to shoot with attention to heights or avoid use all 4:3 limits and provide some croppable space for later choose other aspect ratios. It's like when we shoot video and has a project with intentions to a wider aspect ratio than 16:9 and has to be carefully about how we frame and avoid all the 16:9 aspect limits.

    This is one of the things I like about m43 cameras over full frame. I assigned a custom button to aspect ratios on my m43 for quick access to them and I love it. I’ll usually choose my m43 over my full frame if I’m going to the park on a sunny day to practice shooting. Most likely not going to get anything large print worthy and the aspect ratios help to spark my creativity with compositions.

    • @eccentricsmithy2746
      @eccentricsmithy2746 3 года назад

      Um, you can choose the same aspect ratios on a full frame as a m43. My full frame has the same choice in aspect ratios as him m43. So I am not sure what the one thing you like about m43 over full frame other then image quality suffers the larger you print.

    • @ChillinDylanX

    I do mostly street photography and some nature/landscape. In both genres I find 4:3 to be more pleasing to the eye and helping the composition. Maybe it's because I grew up with this as the TV ratio, maybe it's because to me it represents the best of both worlds, sort of between square and rectangular ratios.
    That said, I shoot with a Fuji mirrorless with a 3:2 sensor and crop in PP.

  • @ThomasParis
    @ThomasParis 4 года назад

    These days, I mostly shoot m43 and I would definitely agree with you that 4:3 works wonders most of the time. That said, I like 3:2 horizontal for landscapes and have no problem making photos I like with that aspect ratio for the kind of stuff I do. But 3:2 vertical? Way too long. For me. Speaking of which... Maybe that's exactly what I should do: only shoot 3:2 in portrait orientation for a while, as an exercise. As for 1:1, I like it but find I really have to think in a different way to frame squares. I remember someone telling me recently how he thought we should rely on diagonals for those. Definitely worth thinking more about. Oh and I do shoot 1:1 every now and then, when I know I'm going to use my portable printer. Which I do every time I photograph a live gig at a cafe. But it tends to feel a bit like a gimmick to me. It does help (force!) me and include some of the audience but still.
    Anyway, thanks for another fine video. And I did like some of the photos you made on that day. Not what you wanted to create. Probably not your best work. But I did like 'em.

    Weirdly, a couple months ago, the whole idea of crop got me curious, so I took a circle (representing the lens's imaging circle), and add in a square crop, 4:3 crop and 3:2 crop, and measured the relative "megapixel" sizes. The square came out to a relative 50.1 mp, the 4:3 crop at 48mp, and the 3:2 crop ended up being 44mp. So, while the square crop was the largest megapixel-wise, the 4:3 crop was only 2mp less, while the 3:2 crop was 4mp lower than the 4:3 and 6mp less than the square crop. (ouch)
    If I cropped a square image out of the 4:3 image, I ended up with 35.5mp, and from the 3:2, a square crop ended up being a mere 26.4mp. Again, the 3:2 crop loses out badly compared to 4:3
    If I started from a square image of 50.1mp, and cropped that to 4:3 and 3:2, I ended up with a 37.3mp and 33.2mp images. Once again, the 3:2 image was the big loser.
    The upshot being that it seems that the best aspect ratio to shoot in is 4:3. Since nobody wants a square image most of the time, and all other things being equal, the 4:3 aspect ratio seems to give the highest resolution. Granted, a 3:2 crop from a 4:3 image would be smaller than a straight 3:2 image from the same sensor, but overall, the 4:3 crop seems to be the best all-around size.
    (I did the whole exercise to try to determine if maybe a square crop wouldn't be the best way to get the most out of our lenses--in the end, I was surprised to realize that probably my 4:3 was the best way to get the most out of the imaging circle of the lens)

      True, but if you care about resolution (and not saying it matters), m43 sensors are capped at about 20mp right?

      @@giac01 I think the post is not about megapixels but efficiency. The post is saying that 4/3 native format sensors uses the lens more efficiently.

      Pavel’s got it. I wasn’t talking about megapixels (esp. in regards to sensor size), which is why I used the term “relative”. 4:3 format makes the most efficient use of the image circle that lenses cast on sensors, regardless of a particular sensor’s size.

    I like the idea of a 2 hour shot, it would be relaxing well I go about my work. If it's comfortable on your head, that might be nice as well.

    I got the G9 for many reasons but aspect ratio didn't really play a part oddly. I've found myself cropping to various ratios including 3x2 even tho I agree with you about it seeming a bit shallow in landscape and slim in portrait. Also Instagram doesn't like 3x2 so that takes some white border fiddling. I'm now liking and more often sticking with the native 3x4 but I tend to just go with what best suits each image. Also like a bit or really narrow cinematic style letterbox shots like frames from a film (not photos of letterboxes...).
    Cheers James, stay away from the bat wing soup.

    What lens are you using in this video? Curious what focal lengths were used b/w the 2 shots of the wall

    James, did you think of shooting from on top of the wall, perhaps 3-4 ft above the wall, so that you could catch the sinuosity of the wall leading off into the trees?

    I always love your videos. I also shoot in 4:3 as that's what most printing companies (yup I use Aldi, LOL) print in. Please please please don't release long videos of GoPro footage. I hate the lens distortion. :-)

    Hey James, I've got a gear-related question. I own a G85 and consider upgrading to a 20 MP sensor to have more resolution left when cropping. So basically the question is G95 or G9? I like the weight and form factor of the G85, and the G95 is almost the same, but the G9 has more features and the price difference is not that big anymore. Would love to hear your opinion, thanks. And maybe related to that: Do you sometimes carry around two bodies, one with a wide angle (zoom) lens and another one with a telephoto, to minimize lens-swapping when being outdoors?

    Hi James, your Northern lights Photo that your selling you said it was 85% of either the A4 or A3 sheet of paper so could you please tell me what size frames do I need to buy to fit them? As I'm not good at maths and last time tried fitting a Photo with frame it wasn't right lol. That photograph from Iceland is just stunning!

    • @JamesPopsysPhoto
      @JamesPopsysPhoto  4 года назад +1

      Hi Lisa, a4 and a3 frames work great as that's the paper size, it's just the border that means the image only covers 85% of the paper, so unmounted frames work best :)

    Although it must be very pleasant to do videos in far off lands of snow capped mountains meeting otherworldly beaches where unicorns gather to create brightly lit rainbows, I'd much prefer to see two hours (maybe more like 45 minutes) of you wandering around damp and badly lit landscapes trying to get a photo. Partly because I'm sadistic, partly because I'm very envious but mostly because I learn so much more.
    Please do it!

    Clouds can be quite rude. Great explanation of aspect ratio and where and why to use different ones. That's one disadvantage of shooting my DSLR but I'll probably still stick with it for a while.
    In my opinion, you don't need to do one of you wandering around for two hours with a GoPro on your head unless of course there are 🐑 involved. Or you just want to. I'd watch it anyway. 🙂

    When I was a uni studying photography (on film) we got taught to think about aspect ratio of the final use right from the beginning of planning a shoot and like you say shoot a bit wide so you have appropriate crop options. I don't think it's talked about all that much in photography education these days.

    Thank you, a virus free video.. I've had enough of the world going crazy because of a flu to be honest.. That would be a great location with mist, I can imagine that you're annoyed about that! This is probably a stupid question, but since I cannot change the aspect ratio on my camera I'm going to ask it anyway.. 😅 If I would change the aspect ratio to 1:1 (if I could), would it only change the way of how I see it on the back of the camera then, or do I also get it 1:1 in Lightroom? And if I also get it 1:1 in Lightroom, wouldn't it be wiser to just shoot at the ratio of the sensor (for mine 2:3) and then later crop it, if you're doing it for a photo you think could be really good and not just for practice?

    • @JamesPopsysPhoto
      @JamesPopsysPhoto  4 года назад +1

      Depends on your camera, but shooting RAW usually means you can change the aspect ratio and crop outwards from 1:1 later :)

    Do you ever shoot in High resolution with the G9? not using a tripod could be a problem, but for the little I've seen it's totally worth in m43 especially because it dramatically reduces noise. From the shutter noise (9:23) it also seems you are bracketing your images: how far apart are they in EV?
