Most photographers shoot RAW, and with good reason. RAW files are much more flexible when editing in post, since for the most part they're uncompressed, meaning you can edit your photos more easily without defects than if you use jpegs. But are jpegs completely useless, in this video I try them out...

Yes please do a editing video. And thanks for posting the presets edits.
Light-year is a measure of distance... technically it's just a year I guess
James where are your other "story" posts - they don't appear in a menu to search for them. I assume this is deliberate?
Just one thing James, light year is unit of distance, not time
I knew that...not! :)
it was actually a light year apart in distance in an alternate universe
Well, many people use time as a measure of distance. ("The next larger town is twenty minutes away.") Inverting that distance might be used as a measure of time. Although a light-year is a really, really long time. Even with the fastest measures of transport humans came up with so far.
@@Skyldyel In Montana they use time to measure distance." How far away is Butte?" "It's only about a 6 pack away"! I kid you not! 🤣
@@Skyldyel A light year is exactly as long as your normal year ;)
James and his tripod a love that dare not speak its name
haha!
@@JamesPopsysPhoto Three Legged Thing isn't it?
Shooting JPEG and using a tripod....... who are you? What have you done with James? We demand answers! 🤣
haha, I suspect normal service shall resume shortly...
I didn't imagine after watching James for so long that I would ever see him visibly using a dreaded tripod so many times :-)
He must be getting old. This video had more times of him using one than all of his last year of videos combined.
@@Relentless0neFPS He married his lovely assistant, and now must resort to a tripod.
Normal service shall resume shortly I promise :)
Popsys, I love this photo narrative series that you’re doing-totally inspiring! And, I would love to see how you edit a series.
I shoot Fuji and with the film simulations and other adjustments you can make to shadows, sharpness etc I find that jpeg is just fine most of the time.
ah I love watching ur videos, they're so calming
Thanks Cameron :)
Just recently found you dude, awesome content! Great delivery! Just getting back into photography after retiring my Konica many years ago. Bought a Sony A6400 and having a blast relearning everything photo! You are definitely my first go-to for RUclips delivery!!
The educational value of your videos is indispensable! Thank you for making videos. Keep them coming. I absolutely love the new mountain bike vlogs. Cheers from Poland!
I Think i could watch your videos all day. your RUclips content is epic mate. Keep it up.
I came here for the photography, I stayed for The analogies.
Fantastic video James. You truly are one of the more refreshing and enjoyable photography channels out there for the past couple of years.
Another enjoyable watch James 👍 Loved all the shots, told the story of the day very nicely.
An editing video will be great, and thanks for the presets. I've been using them for a while now, and everyone loves them.
Fantastic and entertaining to the end , you never disappoint 😀
Thanks for making photography videos so different. So much more interesting to watch than videos about ISO lol. Much love
You are definitely getting better on the bike, getting some speed up downhill! Personally I would like to see some editing videos as that really interests me to see other peoples work flow. Great content as usual.
Discovered you recently in my photography journey. Love your vids. Keep up the great work.
Thanks! :)
Would love another editing video James - thank you !
Would love to see some editing videos from yourself, as I love your style/aesthetic. Been playing with your presets and has for sure made some of photos look that much better
Was out in (I think) your neck of the woods a few days ago. Went up to Bamford edge and snapped some photos. Nothing amazing as I'm super new to it but I had a great time and it's stunning up there. I need to get a nice telephoto though I think. Would save me having to walk right up to everything or learning to fly to get some of the angles I want.
Thanks James another great video, yes please to another editing video maybe you could cover split toning in lightroom
Always so happy to see new videos from James!
Thank you :)
My boss: mate, you should get to work.
Me: nah, new James Popsys video.
I love your editing videos! Plz keep making them
Love your photo’s. They give me a Holiday feeling. I think you desaturate and flatten them a bit. I’d like to learn!!!
Yes. Would enjoy seeing more editing vídeos...!
Yeah a video on editing in lightroom and or photoshoo would be class mate
James 3 weeks before lock down I bought my first digital camera G80 I have to shoot jpeg as I have know idea on prossesing so editing demo with absoute beginners in mind would be a kindness, I love your channel and as I'm the wrong side of 65 I'm fussy about who I spend time with so thank you very much for teaching me regards Kim
Nice one! And ... RUclips is doing horrible job regarding your images. Really! When I saw your shots in video they were looking just Ok, very plain, lacking a some sort of kick. I used your link and ... NICE shots! They are really NICE! I wish to be there too ;)
Ahh thanks! Yep the compression isn't great for photos!
Enjoyed that !! - I like your "biking" vids as I assume you carry minimal weight. Out of interest, if you took only ONE lens out with you while pedalling in the Peak, , which one would it be ?
Great video! I use jpg a lot and always feel inferior when everyone else seems to shoot RAW. So your video put a smile on my face and I can now sleep easy at night....
Nice One accept that light years is a measure for a distance not time. Love your channel! Absolutely can feel with every step you do. ;)
Would be good to see your take on editing those images. I’m intrigued how you get what I call the “Popsys look”. I.e. that ‘high pass’ (not sure if that’s the right terminology) look you’re photos have. I have you’re presets so will be good to see how you apply them. Great video again of a familiar area.
This look goes very well with the (stereo)typical English weather.
Great video AGAIN James. Interested to know - were all you bike shops timed or do you have a remote?
I must say, as someone who has been shooting video on LUMIX cameras for 7 years, you have sparked an interest to start experimenting with still photography. Brilliant work.
Yess! Editing Video!
Yes thanks. An editing video is always helpful
Am shocked by the tripod use so much. Have you converted? Yes, please edit a some stuff! Recently found the channel and been going through the videos... ended up deciding to buy the G9. I was looking at the Canon RP, but it wasn't meeting the needs I want, but after watching your videos... realize the G9 meets them. Was able to try one out at the local camera shop and am waiting for mine to arrive now.
Haha, no conversion, only using when I don't have a model :)
I personally wouldn't mind you using your viewfinder instead of the screen. I always imagine it to be a real pain in the ass to shoot like that just for the videos sake. Therefore I would be able to to enjoy those clips more with you using the viewfinder. Most of the time there isn't much visible on the screen anyways (from the GoPros perspective, that is). Great video, MR. Popsys, really enjoyed it!
Would love to see you editing!
I have been shooting sports photography in JPEG for years, and have gotten great results. Yes, the new cameras are a little more “stretchy" than the older cameras when it comes to editing JPEGs (there was a big difference when I went from a Nikon D750 to a D850 aside from the fact of the more megapixels). I usually shoot my landscapes in RAW format, but will do a shoot in JPEG to see the difference. I have not put myself in one of my shots yet....that is for another time. Great video, thank you.
Good video as always.
Is you're going to do a video on editing, how about one with jpeg using no presets.
When I first started in digital I only shot in jpeg and editing using expusure and warmth on Windows editor.
Switched to raw and photoshop, I never look at jpeg now.
Yo, just found your channel a few days ago, and honestly I am very glad I did, nice to see some contentaken from a different perspective, as in like no tripod and all that😂
Thanks so much :)
@@JamesPopsysPhoto 👍👍Kinda also want to visit the peak district now😂
James, great video! I'm also fond of cycling and photography (lately) but it takes time to get my camera from the backpack. Do you keep it outside on the capture clip all the time while on the bike? I'm afraid to damage the equipment if I fall. The camera won't self-heal, like bones do :(
Hi James, firstly I think your videos are fantastic and you’ve really made me rethink the journey my photography is going to take. I just wondered if you thought as an enthusiastic amateur (not quite beginner I don’t think!) whether there is a danger of taking on too much information? I have spent literally hours watching you, Tom H, Nick P, Nigel D etc. And when I’m not I’m out with my camera shooting and loving the outside. Just worry I might reach saturation point from content! Great work mate 👍🏻
Great vlog, quite enjoyed getting to know the Lake District a bit more. Do you use the timer or a remote for the pictures of yourself?
Timelapse mode :)
@@JamesPopsysPhoto Clever!
Do you think you would do a photography contest? Doesn't need like prizes, but I think it would be fun.
Great video! Would be cool if you did an episode shooting raw+jpeg and then comparing the two in editing
Maybe next week :)
For the book try switching to the Affinity set (photo, designer etc.). For trails I'd have a look at High Peak from Cromford in Derbyshire and there's a good one near Hawes that runs south west towards Ingleton.
Yes, please do an editing video! :)
I've been missing the sheeps, James! Thanks for running into one :D
Wow. Tripod usage....quite often. I love this series. Keep it up.
Only when I have to :)
1:19 light years are a measure of distance, not time. I love your videos.
I'm happy to help you layout a book using InDesign. Even if you're just interested in tips, since you probably want the joy of doing your own actual layout.
5:38 Love that shot! So sharp - how did you trigger the camera at just the right time?
Was wondering the same thing!
8:45 Just hope that gate didn't take a fence.
You do seem to be getting faster on the bike. Just waiting for the off.
That’s one way to take selfies 😁 thought you were setting up for a mega splash with a sheet of water each side of your wheel with that puddle shot, I feel robbed 😂
"... Ride back to the car, hopefully without injuring myself..."
*Zips off at 1,000,000 mph.*
Okay so maybe I’m an idiot but how do you get the timing right with those self timer shots? Are you setting it to take a bunch of photos in quick succession?
It does make a difference for the viewing experience! Thank you!
Couldn't see anything on the back screen then, as I'm sure you saw too... :P I've LUTs I made for flat RAWs and ones for contrasty saturated JEPGs. Sometimes they work on the other but seems a decent way to do it. Cheers for the Skillshare offer!
Love this stuff
I do like the colours/texture of your edits. I want to just start shooting jpeg's as I feel I need to learn more about getting the correct settings rather than relying on editing the raw file to get the correct colour balance etc.
I sometimes accidentally edit the JPEG in capture one instead of the RAW file and realise it half an hour later ...
Would like to see an editing video - especially how you edit your (daylight) hiking trips.
One of my favourite videos of yours James, thanks. It's interesting how you put it all together, watching you do it in real-time. Did you need to edit the photos much?
Thanks Bradley! Used one of my presets with a few tweaks from there :)
Your mountain bike skills are definitely improving...comment about 4 wheel drive vehicle driving on leafs is hilarious. Did you feel anything was missed in jpeg vs RAW?
Hey James, wonderful video, I love the places you go for photography they are so green... Even if the image processing power of the cameras is not the best comparing with a pc, indeed the jpeg of the new camera model is very good and store a lot of data in the case you need to do some tiny modification. I hope in the future the manufacturers add FPGA with the ability to import any hardware accelerator we need like the prototype of apertus... Will see..
What do you have on the hot-shoe of G9? I can't recognise the device.
Its a wireless mic. Rode wireless Go.
Another great volg James. thumbs up!! love these story shoots.
quick question....... What do you think is the ideal number of photos to make a collection. last week you managed it with one image but obv's that's not a collection. keep in mind you would have to exhibit the collection in a frame, maybe, or is there a way to show a story collection in a better way??? that you know of.
I always aim for roughly a dozen, but there's no rule :)
This is what went through my head with the picture of the sheep under the tractor: “Yeah, it looks like ewe’ve got an oil leak mate. I can get some parts ordered but it’ll take a while and it’ll cost you about 300 forbs.” 😂
Good fun. Although this just in from Pendants’ Corner: light-years = distance, not time. Sorry, couldn’t help meself, I’ll get me coat 😊👍🏻
Err I believe that should be Pedants Corner unless you are adorned with multiple necklaces! ;)
I really like the noun / verb idea
James, in answer to the question do we want more editing videos, I for one would like to see some. But, can we have you trying to edit in something other than lightroom or Photoshop for a change? Many of us can't afford these programs, but things like Affinity Photo are far more accessible. Just a thought. Anyway, love the channel, keep up the great work and humour!!
Photoscape X :)
Some can afford it but hate it..affinity is amazing. Blown away with the ipad app.
How about Darktable? Free and open source, quite capable.
Great idea. Maybe Capture One? It's not cheap either but a lot of people use it (including myself).
For me it's not about affordability. I want to get the shot in the camera, just like shooting slides back in the '90s, although I always shoot RAW as insurance. That's one reason I love the curve adjustments in my cameras (OM-D). For me, a RAW converter (in my case DxO) is plenty, if I ever use it. Digital should be liberating.
I would really like to see a modern codec like JP2K or something like that. JPEG is fine, but JP2K or similar would make RAW completely unnecessary. IMHO.
The cycling photo purist would not approve of that MTB shot - wrong gearing and the pedals are not horizontal :P
Just wanted to say you produce great content. Your nonchalant approach when explaining compositions and workflow is also helping in the learning process as the explanations are really focused on the important elements of the shot.
Haha, who makes these rules!? Thanks mate :)
I am glad to see that you have finally returned to your first love in photography - sheep protraits. 😉😂😂
Sometimes I’m so zoned into the b-roll it sounds like you are saying sheep district. Maybe they should have their own national park? And thanks for the book. I like this format more than the square and just the right amount of words and of course - incredible photos.
Tim Nelson
They do, it’s the Yorkshire Dales National Park (look up the logo)!
In honor of the Social Media trend of nit picking everything that's said, I would like to point out that you used a stick and not a twig. I used my light-year powered circumference tool as I say on my gate and it was definitely to large to be a twig. 🥂
I bought a Canon EOS R about 18 months ago. Since then, I have been using JPEGS quite often. S O F A R , I’ve not been let down . Quite impressed in fact .
This one made me laugh. Needed this right about now. Thanks.
I've found the JPEGs out of my FujiFilm HS30EXR, now an 8 year old camera, are extremely flexible, almost as flexible as RAW.
Great to bring your days' story via imagery. My day was consumed with tiling the kitchen, which may have taken more than twice as long if I had gotten the camera out...
@6:54 if I did that in one of my videos with my normal city bike I'm sure no one will see my face again 😆
Interesting and nice photos like always ✌🏻❤️
Haha, not a great commute route... :)
A video on how you edit a jpeg would be pretty cool. It's a challenge!
JPEGS??? Yes they are good, especially after incorporating the Skylum AI products into my workflow! Luminar 4 is amazing!!!! I still want to take RAW to have the rages in color values. Also check out the Skylum Aurora HDP program it is also amazing, you can do HDR with just one Raw file, no more bracketing!!!! Thank you for the video today, I learn little tricks all the time from you. I am handicapped and do not use a viewfinder just the back of the camera to do all my shooting and focusing. I worry about not getting a sharp enough picture at times but there are many ways to compensate from slight sharpening, layer masking, stamp tool and sometimes just a different crop does the trick. You just work with what you got.
Thanks as always for what you do!

More editing for me please James!
Nice tripod you have there!
“Gates are not fences” thanks for the heads up.
Great video! Always entertaining and educational.
Thank you for another great video. You could have used your tripod as the twig! 😁
thanks James got my free two months going to really enjoy improving my photo skills
Amazing trail... And pictures..
An editing video where you show us how to try and rescue overexposed or underexposed shots that you don't have time to retake might be helpful. I know I've had to do it a few times, and thank God the a7III has the dynamic range it does. (Capture One also helps with that, to be fair.)
good mtb route that one James, that last climb up to your final section in the video is a right b'stard isn't it :)
The first picture in that set is epic btw.
I really like that place.. I was concentrated in the place ... Time to time i kept on not listening to you so I had to go back. I can't blame me you for biking all day the landscape is calm but in a dope way 😊🤷♀️
There's certainly a case for shooting JPG; especially if you don't edit your photos. BUT: every time you save a JPG file, it degrades the quality and you can never revert it to the original. If you edit and save it twenty or thirty times, you'll lose a noticeable amount of image quality.
You're preaching to the converted my friend :)
That re-editing degradation on resaving issue only applies to pixel editors. If you use non-destructive software like lightroom where the original file is untouched it does not matter.
Also, if you amend the file name every time you save (say with a letter suffix) then the original image remains unchanged. This is the difference between SAVE and SAVE AS.
I've never tried to save a jpeg, open it again and save it 30 times. You just stimulated my evil side. I'm going to try it now
In for the editing video!
I’m finding your recent “story” videos inspiring. Would it be possible to do one that is you out walking? I’d like to see how you handle no prop like a bike and the absence of another person to create a story. My spouse’s patience has been exhausted and I walk as I don’t have a bike. Plus the weather here is blech and I need inspiration. Cheers from “Junauary” in British Columbia.
Thanks! And much trickier without a prop! :)
