Blue hour is fast becoming my favourite time of day for photography. Soft light, amazing colour, and quiet places. In this video I take the wrong camera out in the Peak District on a mountain bike to get one photo, and instead I take 200!

I'd like to formally apologise for verbally abusing a sheep. My allergies got the better of me...
Bared ..... 😂😂😂
K Guffick you mean baaaaaaaared
at least it was only verbally abusing
James Popsys we just assumed it was giving you lip 😉
I was just gonna tell you to not talk bad at animals!
I have to say James, you have mastered the "I'm lost" look. Thanks for sharing, very interesting and shows there is an art to taking a good photo rather than just point and click. Graham
Cheers Graham :)
Thanks for giving the G80/85 some love James!
I am so happy that I found your channel!
"How did I not see that before?!"
-- words usually said by me at home when it's far too late to do anything about it... 😆
“How did I not see that before?”
That’s why you’re the pro. I usually have that moment when I get the photos into Lightroom.
I find it useful to hear someone's thought processes as they are finding composition or the right settings, so I don't mind you rambling on at all!
What I took from this is that I’m not the only person to change my mind at the last minute. Much better composition, the moody clouds behind you helped the storey.
Lost on the moors!
Actually love that photo James. Great video
Entertaining video and a great photo James. A lot of people would have argued that you can't take a photo like that with a micro 4/3 camera. You once again proved that it's not the size of the sensor, the price of the equipment, not even the year of production of the camera, that makes a photo to turn out interessting or boring. It's the experience and passion of the guy behind the camera that makes the difference. Really good job mate.
Cheers Markus :)
Great video. Great picture. Not wishing to be pedantic but you were next to a gate and a wall not a fence. There got that off my chest. You are a great source of ideas. Many thanks.
Haha, cheers Ian, I'll blame the hayfever again...
Your sense of humor is amazing! I love this channel!
I love this new style of video. Really love hearing your thoughts as you think through a photo.
Great video and great image of you stood with your bike next to the GATE. Love the light from your bike and your editing
Lol - This is the story of my life:
When this popped up on my recommendations it read "The best time of day for photography... 1 hour ago".
One of my chief pursuits is photographing surfing & I'd like a quid for every time I've been told "You should have been here an hour ago - It was Awesome!" 😃
hahaha!
I'm pretty new to photography and I really love your videos because you explain everything in a really intuitive way. The way you approach Photography in general is really simple and I feel like I learn so much with every video you make, even if the topic is very bland and obvious to you. Thanks for all the tips 👍
Love the pic mate .. I like blue hour..
I liked the composition with the gate and sign post with your bicycle in it. Cheers.
yes yes yes yes!!! Your book just arrived!!!!! So stoked!!
Thanks Troy :)
I love videos like this. Thanks James. Perhaps one day I will visit the Peak District. Looks lovely.
Apart from liking the image. You did what you said you were going to do. You created the image that you said you would and it told the story you hoped it would. Excellent
The story worked out great James, great job as always, thank you.
Looking out. Time 10.30 pm. Still bright out there. It is a bit like catch 22. When it is finally warm to being out catching blue hour the sun will never get down here in Sweden. It is passing bedtime before blue hour happen. 😊
That GoPro has serious dynamic range. When you’re setting up the camera the sky and shadow detail is fantastic.
Good choice. Really tells your story.
That turned out really, really nice, but it makes me want to be able to read the signpost for some reason. Thanks for bringing us along to watch... such nice work, really.
Awesome image James. Thanks for another great video
Love this! Photography is just so magical
What with that sort of ring cloud formation nearly over your head I thought you had a halo thing going!! Brilliant video James, as always!
That turned out to be an amazing shot! I agree the different composition made a huge difference. Also just received you books about week or so ago. Absolutely loved them and told anyone I could about them ! Thankyou !
Very nice shot. Thank you for sharing
And the morale of the story is, Be adaptable.
Thanks for sharing James
Altogether excellent! Precisely the kind of show-and-tell example that can be of big help. Way better than standard tutorial approaches.
Thanks Michael :)
Excellent video - more super useful tips for taking photos with my G9 👍
That's a good shout about running the camera in time lapse mode. I usually faff about with an app on my phone, this might actually be a faster option for some of my uses.
Works for me definitely :)
Nice shot, James.
A cracking image mate. Second composition miles better. Thanks
Nice work 👍 It came together great in the end.
Great vlog once again! RockOn
Nice photo and great behind the scenes!
Hey, James. Cracking video and nice final result photographically.
Cool photo James, love blue hour. I wonder if Mrs Popsys thought about sending a search and rescue team out! News headline: UK photographer gets lost in Peak District two miles from home 🤣
Haha, it's not outside the realms of possibility... :)
Brilliant photo! Great video also!
Pretty nice flare on the bike light for F2.8!
Added a touch in photoshop :)
G'day James - just a thanks for the book, arrived in Western Australia today.
Must admit I’m glad you moved the composition as I found the gate post closet the camera really distracting. Great final image.
Nicely done..you should take more pictures of yourself too 🙌🙌
I’m so glad you changed the composition.
Super shot!!
Loved this one! Really informative, taking us through your process from concept to final image.
I think it was good that he talked through his thought process and something caught his eye and adapted quickly. This is how it happens in the real world.
And I always love how little incidental details/textures add interest to what may have otherwise been a lackluster photograph. As my experience grows, I try to identify these things in the field, but majority of the time it's just happenstance
Brilliant picture James
Cheers Gary! :)
Lovely photo! Thanks!
Great video and super photo!
Great video and great end result. Personally I think it’s a shame the top of the fence was in line with the hill line in the background. Cameras just a little higher would have got both. Just my thought.
Well done Jams.
Thanks Charles :)
Love the pic! Well done!
Love the photo James! Really great seeing you tie all of this together.
Nice pic. The story element makes for good content. Well done.
Cheers Jerry :)
That photo turned out great and truly does tell the story you were aiming for,. I really like the mood of it as well.
Nice photo and enjoyed the photography angst. One funny shot possible there is the finger posts sticking out of your helmet, seen early in the video.😀
Haha, I'll save that for episode 2 :)
You're getting very good at this game, I love that shot
Very nice simple composition is really the key to a great photograph, is my take from this video. Keep them coming!
That's a really nice shot! :D
Cheers Mads! :)
That picture turned out really good! Great composition and I think it tells the story very well!
great work! Thanks for sharing this, thanks from. Chile
The change of location was spot on. There was interest and texture from the ground to the sky. You did a great job looking lost, too! -Elaine J.
Well it already has been said a couple of times here, great pic James. Maybe you can show us how you got from the raw file to the final pic. Especially the lights and how you tweak them would be interesting.
Sounds like a good idea :)
It's always a nice day when I watch one of your videos!
Gorgeous shot sir. This is my first introduction to blue hour photography.
Very cool image! I enjoyed this style of video - in depth thoughts and process of capturing one particular image!
Love the names in the UK. Peak District, Lake District.
I have Ocean Beach...
Awesome shot!
Awesome work. I wish you used smaller aperture and created a sunstar using the light of the bike. Am enjoying sunstar a lot these days.
Might've been tough to keep still for that long :)
I bet someone already said this, but it`s nice to find Samwell Tarly of photography on YT. Grear vids mate. Added your channel to favs.
Blue hour became one of my favorite times to shoot the first time I ever shot during it. I managed to get my favorite shot I've ever taken of a building. All glass, turned orange by the lights inside and purple and blue by the sky outside, plenty of clouds to keep the sky from being a solid gradient. And right next to a river where nearly the whole reflection was in the shot. Then the second I wanted to go and do it again, my work hours got changed and now I work during blue hour. At least I got to do it that one time and I still get my hard midday sun for my black and white and infrared stuff.
Hey Bud, May you link your photo? I'd love to see It, seems a sweet shot :')
@@alessandrodimilla8450 If you meant "Can I have a link to it", it's this one here. instagram.com/p/B8M4A9llYib/
Not impressive by any stretch, but damn it, I like it.
@@RealRaynedance thank you! Sweet sweet photo, I'd call It beautiful c:
Really nice photo!
Great shot 👍 and video 😀
James, very nice. Live the way your phone illuminated you face also. Which lens did you use on the G85?
Don't lose the shot when you don't have a tripod, or your ball head disintegrates 12 miles into a wilderness hike. You have a lot of rocks to stack and some adjustment pebbles to get things level. Plan enough time before the shot and scatter the rocks when you're done. You'll have an interesting story. Great photo, James!
The result looks great, especially because you can't really see anything of the landscape, but the photo came out actually a lot more interesting focusing on the small details (artificial light on the grass, the textures of the road and the wall), and of course the story telling. Well done!
Thanks! :)
Excellent shot and advice. I hope nukeproof or maxxis is recognizing the free advertising you’ve been giving them with that bike! (Being a bike nerd as well as a photography nerd any of these videos where you’re biking is just a straight victory for me haha)
Very good man, thank you so much.
Love pic, really nice video. THANKS!
The third thing that works really well on the photo is the expression on your face. Something i am very familiar with on my own face every time i go exploring!
Another good example of story telling photography. You should try one outside of golden and blue hours...when actually most non-professionals do their photography. Just a thought. Keep up great videos.
Most of my videos are filmed outside of these times :)
I can tell you when it wasn't. About half past ten this morning when I rode up into the Peak District with photography in mind and it was very wet and very misty. Rubbish for photography but great fun on the Triumph all the same. Oh well :)
I think the photo works well as you’ve managed to get your character/ personality in to it I can imagine what you thinking going by how you present your self in your videos nice work
It was worth it!
Love your videos, I’m learning a lot
Cool photo James. I haven’t played around with setting up a shot like that yet but I might have to try it out soon. That secret game changing bag is killing me by the way. I wanted to order a Wandrd Prvke 21L but I’m holding out until I see this one your using.
Apparently the realise is pushed to July annoyingly, I really want to use it all the time. Hopefully it doesn't disappoint people... :)
James Popsys as long as it fits your needs that’s all that matters really. Shame about the release getting pushed back but not the end of the world. I’m going to wait until it comes out just in case I prefer it to the Wandrd one. My old college backpack with a cheap camera insert is still doing a job for the time being 😁
That is a very intersting photo - tælling a great story (lost biker).
That bike of yours is sounding a bit squeaky mate. sounds like the rails of the seat might need a little tighten and/or a dab of grease. great vid as usual!
I think you might be right :)
I really like a combination of natural and artificial light - I think I have heard it called Crossover light . It is great for lit buildings.
Try the old composition with cycle facing the sign post. I think it’d be cool as well
Another great video James. It looked so peaceful there. I doubt it’s like that today. Love how the colours blend in. Great. 👍
Very nice photograph.
Great shot but I would've raised the camera on the 2nd position too. So the hills wouldn't vanish behind the fence.
Janne Ranta Yes, nice picture but I wondered about the horizon being the same level as the fence also.
Always appreciate your work!......May have missed it, but wondering which lens you used for this shot? Thanks!
Me again.. enjoying the variations in your output these last months.. the creativity videos (storytelling, selfies, thought process) all good. Much info and material out there but not much in your niche..
Cheers Ian :)
I was going to eventually make a RUclips channel where I griped about all the crap people tell you to buy and all the stuff the “influencer photographers say” but you’ve done it for me so thanks, your different and awesome.
Haha, cheers Luke :)
As ever, hilarious humourtography. Gr8 image too 🙌
