When discussing Hong Kong why is it never mentioned that the lease NEVER applied to the island it was only the extended territory on the mainland. The island was a British colony for ever.
Yes but 99% of Hong Kong Island’s water and electricity production takes place in the New Territories. Therefore it would have been untenable for the British to continue because the Chinese would simply turn the water off at source.

You can look at the annexation of Goa for an example of what would have happened if it came down to a military confrontation between the UK and PRC, the US wouldn't even have time to get involved.
What if ………. The EU referendum had been held before the Scottish referendum ( I am a Brit living in Scotland for over 50 years ) I am convinced the Scotland would be independent - the ensuing mess would be even worse , a little crumb of consolation. Happy new year and baton down the hatches !

Increased living standards for average Chinese citizens is a factor. This didn't happen across the years of the Soviet Union or in other Warsaw Pact nations.
