Stephen Fry: Why I quit Twitter and why Starmer's first 100 days have been 'disastrous'

  • Stephen Fry has told LBC that the first 100 days of the Labour government have been "disastrous".
Actor and comedian Fry, 67, told LBC's Tonight with Andrew Marr that it was "a mystery that Labour could have allowed themselves to get into this mess."
Fry, who was previously a longtime Labour supporter and even appeared in a party political broadcast in 1993, said Labour's current plight seemed "extraordinary... because you think you're in opposition, you've got a bit of time to get things together."
He explained his reasoning behind leaving his 13 million followers behind on Twitter and leaving the platform, citing Elon Musk as the primary reason.
Fry, who is well-known as a Remainer, also took aim at Brexit. He took Austrian citizenship last month, which he was able to do because of a new rule in the country that allows people whose family was persecuted by the Nazis to become citizens.
He told Andrew: "My grandmother was Austrian and it's partly a finger up to Brexit. Obviously, to have a Schengen group passport is a good thing."

Your point was acknowledged by Stephen Fry near the beginning of the video. The fact is that the Labour party had 14 years to prepare to form government and this is what we've got, ........ as Fry said himself "disastrous". Wouldn't be so absolute unless you are so old you don't expect to see more than maybe one more general election - Now the Tories have humbled themselves so hard and Labour seem well on well on the way to blowing their own leg off too... Both groups might learn from it, oust the worst of the greedy, power crazed hypocrite and fools, and so manage to recover into a party you'd want to vote for again. Obviously don't hold your breath, but it wouldn't be the first time a party has shot itself in the foot and recovered - to some extent we have a recent example as Labour did that under Corbyn with the anti-semeatic stuff...

The pressure relief valve of free speech is being damaged beyond repair and this will eventually lead to the pressure vessel blowing. You can’t subject the majority of people to laws that suppress their rights, label them as the problem while importing vast swathes of people who damage them and not expect them to react.
