    I've never seen a posterboy faction for a miniatures game fail like SCEs have.
    If GW wants an armored up faction to be their poster boys it should be Slaves to Darkness. They're so immensely popular from total war warhammer, they would sell.

    Your suggestions make sense, with so many companies complaining about increased paper costs and shipping costs, that large extremely heavy book I don't believe adds value to the box and is used mainly to justify higher costs at a loss to GW. Make a spiral smaller book and drop the overall cost while maintaining their targeted profit per item GW is looking for. They could lore dump new stories through wharhammer plus while adding sorely missing content to the website. Offer a 90 day free pass so people can digest at their leisure in the box. I don't think most peeps would complain.

    As good as this box is, I guess it is because everyone says so. It's tanking at our store just like Dominion did. We'll probably be stuck with our stock until Black Friday sale and overall be a slight loss for us.

    This doesn't help FLGS or local shops but them overprinting for a product not really in demand like AOS is great for consumers who can wait a month or two. Already picked up a Skaventide box at 40% off MSRP because the shop bought too many of them and their pre-orders severely underperformed. This only helps already established fans of AOS such as myself and others. I agree with you 100% on softcover rulebook make it only the rules. They have precedent with this too with the Assault on Black Reach box Space Marines vs Orks 5th edition boxset which I thought was great. Used that rulebook until the pages fell out. Perfect size, easy to flick through, and could carry it in a shoulder bag.
    Edit: You can already see seller panic with Ebay Retailers. Just casually browsing and not even looking at Buy/Sell/Trade Groups I see Skaventide selling for $220, $210, $200, $190. Its losing value for retailers insanely fast which is terrible for stores like you guys.

    Y’all reminded me that the ‘Launch Box’ and ‘Starter Box’ are two different things now.
    Starter Box should be the two spearheads (the actual SH, not everything), terrain, dice, whippystick, and Core Rules pamphlet for… get this….. $100
    This Launch Set is fine, but should be $200 (hell, I’ll say $225)

    Skaventide is one of the best launch boxes they have put out. What I would change is get rid of those heavy hardcover books and go back to the soft cover mini-rule books. Let the collectors buy them directly from GW and save the weight. Shipping these boxes is not cheap and I see they made a lighter box compared to the past boxes. I would add the warscrolls for the forces in the box and a quick reference sheet.

  • @McMuffinsable

    Honestly I think they're in a weird position of treating these launch boxes as a sort of prestige item but producing and marketing them like intro items if that makes sense given some of the stuff I've heard from other FLGS owners talking about GW marketing pushing them to buy way more of them than they want. They just showed news about the intro boxes and it was right on the money for what you said (I assume you recorded this a few days prior).
    Layman's opinion though. I love these videos.

    I can’t even imagine what would make me want this box. As you and others in the comments point out... it’s not a starter box. It’s sort of a luxury item. I don’t want the armies. I don’t want the big core rule book.

    From a customer perspective it's nice the Skaventide box will be available for some time. I guess gamer interests do not always align with those of shopkeepers 🙂

    • @lordsofwargamesandhobbies3905
      @lordsofwargamesandhobbies3905  Месяц назад +1

      The customer business dynamic is always one of 'some' tension. Customers want value (either price, service etc) and businesses need to generate a profit.
      Where we are aligned I think, is that generally customers want to support their favourite shops and help them stay open.

    I would like to see a return of the multiple versions of the starter boxes like we had for the Death Guard vs Space Marines. You had different levels to buy into introducing you to the game and if you bought all of them you filled out the army without to much overlap/doubles. I'd rather spend $75-$80 to get a small force, mini rulebook and a Captain/Lt than spending $200+ for 2 armies when I might not even want the second one. A hardback book when most of my list now-a-days are all digital and the same plastic extras thrown in every big box. A cheap ruler, templates and some specific widget only used in GW games that can be replaced with a better quality 3rd party company.

  • @brandonmichaeljavier4709

    To be honest, i'd cut the books, put a smaller format book and throw in a limited edition model that would only appear in the boxset thats just an alternate sculpt of a hero model, so that the collector and painter would have something, the gamer would have an easy access component in the smaller rule book and the new gamer the chance to have a new game with everything needed.
    Sure it will bring FOMO, but having a box that when compared to rhe ultimate starter set being lesser models of battleline/primary units isnt significant enough for someone to justify buying, there has to be something in the box that can cater to each aspect of the hobby.

      Great deal, but it really does prove our point about these sets. They almost become toxic assets for shops.

  • @Stonehorn

    Personally I think the way The Old World is doing it is far better for the players. Single army boxes that you can easily add on to. No need to split with friends. Only the launch boxes had the rulebook so people like me don’t end up with 5 or 6 separate copies.
    The Skaven models are fantastic, my problem is I have no use for Sigmarines. So I’ll just wait for standalone Skaven spearheads I can add on to. Plus, I’m still working on finishing my CoS army, which is secondary to my Bret’s and the Dwarfs I ordered.
    Overall I really like ToW’s release strategy, but I also just really enjoy that whole setting and have been playing it since 1993 when I was 12.

    I think distinguishing the “launch box” from “big bad starter set” is part of the problem.
    Soul Wars was awesome and you didn’t have to FOMO into it.

    I wonder if it would be viable if they, instead of doing a 2 player box, do a one player box that is bigger, but has all the things you need to start for one player?

  • @mrsupaconducta

    I don't dig the starter sets for AoS. There's too much stuff I don't want and not enough to start a whole army. Maybe have a new Skaven and Stormcast spearhead with the books, to play out the box? Seems like that would have been the obvious thing.

  • @josephjustice4553

    Very interesting reflection. Agree with you that the set could be a lot less gaudy and cheaper. Very interested to see what your market report yields. How have Skaventide sales been so far for you? My local store ordered 8 and has only sold 2. 🤷‍♂️

    I loved the presentation of the books in the box. It felt so premium. But I know I'll maybe read half the lore and just use a ghb. Still, I don't think I would want to save 20, 30, or even 50 on the box and not get the full rulebook.

    • @lordsofwargamesandhobbies3905
      @lordsofwargamesandhobbies3905  2 месяца назад

      That's fair. It just doesn't feel special? Like the fact that other books can mostly replace it immediately doesn't feel very premium.

    I love AoS! It's consistently been GW's best game. This launch box is awesome! Great value too. I love the HC book, it's a launch box not a starter set. These boxes are for the hardcore fans not for beginners. They just announced the Starter sets with the intro booklets and dice and rulers...

      @lordsofwargamesandhobbies3905  2 месяца назад +2

      That's great man. The problem is the messaging isn't great, and it's their first product to market.
      We are speaking from a place of experience, seeing how these sets have been released for nearly 30 years and evolved.
      The irony is that they tried to make a box for 'everyone' and they are selling less than the last few sets. For them it probably doesn't matter too much because they have increased the price.
      Thanks for the comment!

    GW needs to stop treating AOS like it’s 40k. It’s not and will never be. 40K can sell $250 boxes. Why would they think AOS could? Just compare 40K and AOS sales.

    The massive hardback books are starting to get annoying now that they've switched to a 3 year cycle for new editions. It feels so wasteful if you don't get to play all that often, which I don't.
    Dungeon Crawl Classics is an RPG, admittedly, but they've had the same big hardback rulebook for about 12 years now. They do new printings to correct errata, do special releases with limited edition covers, and every so often switch out a little sample adventure they include, no more than 8 pages or so, and it's still selling reliably. I feel like if GW just focused on creating a really solid ruleset (well, another one -- Middle Earth rules are great) and just did new printings using the same strategy, maybe swapping out some sample missions/lore, doing collector's editions every now and then, they'd still sell copies consistently, and it would give people more time to get used to the edition without needing to throw away the old stuff every three years.

    Little correction.. no one bought dominion because no one liked the new orks.. I like stormcasts but not everyone does.. so both sides of the box was a tough sale.. then over produced ontop of that. Skaventide selling good. Just hard to see because if you order on GW site you get cool coins. Having said that. There is a ton of LGS where I live and they each sold around 30 pre-orders (I'm a vendor) :)

    Launch box, not starter box :)
    You’re comparing two different product lines in my opinion.
    And the mid sized “starter” when you account for inflation IS those $80 Skull Pass sets. Especially since impulse buy prices have shifted so much in the last 20 years.

    This box is geared toward idiots like myself with no real responsibilities or respect for their money... Which is all well and good, but why print enough for the whole planet. Cheap things get people to try your game. These boxes aren't that.

  • @flint9080
    @flint9080 2 месяца назад +2

    I was really surprised to hear that, if they only printed a small amount of the box set, I would be excited to get it and wouldn't mind the books. Actually arguing for FOMO? Really? FOMO is 100% phycological since you get the exact same object, but you "feel" differently about it. I guess I've just been around long enough to not get excited about FOMO.
    The argument for the big colorful book: When new players read it, it entices them to want more. This was true for me when I started in 40k 2nd edition. Now, the book does nothing for me. I don't want the book. I don't want to pay for it. GW is just telling me to wait for the starter sets to be released.

    Too expensive for locals here , plus skaven are REALLY unpopular here ( it is cultural "rat people" are specific type of people we had war for over 1000y now). If the box was beastmen/chaos vs elves of anytime people would gobble it up.
