My FLGS is a great place to shop (all year round) but especially between Black Friday and Christmas. The sales are fine (very rarely heavy discounts) and they carry a wide variety of things. Small board/card games and lots of other things make great stocking stuffers. I spent way more than planned but I feel it is great because a lot of that went back into the local community rather than to Amazon or other mega companies! Keep up the great work!

The thing i noticed, as i was the first time in my gw shop for the christmas period, was that the shop, even as it is small, was empty. I went there on a friday late afternoon and there were like 2 people there. Gw manager spoke mostly with 1 of the customers who was mostly there everytime when i went to that gw shop.i guess he is some kind of whale for that shop owner so that guy gets special treatment/more attention. I had to intervene their discussion several times to ask questions about stuff. So i dont know if i just came a bad day/bad time ... other days in another period there were like 8 people there, playing games etc

I'm an ex-Games workshopper from back about 15 years back. Had my own shop. Even back then, the company model was purely about how to drive sales and they didn't care at all about burning through their staff. They went to this ridiculous one-person store model from a staff of four people at each location, and still expected us to grow sales every year. I love their universes and miniatures, but they're so predatory I have a hard time supporting them from a moral standpoint. I feel like I'm a games Workshop conscientious objector.

Unfortunately, most if not all LGS's are insanely overpriced, smell bad, and have an odd uncomfortable feel today. And with no games being played in store much, the draw to go there is simple not there for alot of us. Having extremely overpriced plastic shoved in your face with a "buy now and go" attitude, i.e. GWs company mission statement. The community has begun switching to self 3d printing, or Etsy printers.

I always encourage players in my wargaming community to play their games at stores as much as possible and lure people who start watching the table to roll some dice and have them play along. Basically be a plant for the store so you can trick more people into the hobby.

I can't stand how much I love the Games Workshop universes and miniatures, and how disgustingly predatory they are compared to all the other companies in the industry.

I’ll do a Mordheim inspired Empire army, but I’m still bitter about Fantasy 15 years later.

Toys r us used to be back in UK, they went bust, I believed they fully died out, but seems to have survived in canada! random strange fact for you.

Just wanted to say a massive thanks for your guys insights into the industry. I run a small 3D printing/Laser engraving business but my biggest earner is the Painting clubs i run myself. The actual brick and motar and in person stuff. So its a godsend actually seeing and hearing how you guys operate!

I've personally seen one shut down due to them bad talking the local non games workshop gaming stores not realizing they've been there for over a decade before GW opened and wouldn't even have a market without them. but that was just the stupidity of the employees not GW, back in 98 or 99 i think...

Our local art store, which was the only place in town that sold hobby products, had to move to a neighbouring (less fashionable) town due to rents. It's not just the small stores, quite a few of the franchises have had to close/move stores in our town due to the rent as well. UK for reference.

i stopped buying in a local store. Before covid i met a lot of people there, we where able to play there and because of that i bought my stuff there. I dont care if its more expensive in the local shop, i pay the higher price because i get a chance to meet other people with the same interest. After Covid they stopped everything. For over a year you where not allowed to play there and also no events and no painting area anymore. So i stopped buying there. Without those things, for me there is no difference to an random online store and because of that no reason to pay the higher price.

It's a small game but Heavy Gear Blitz is an awesome Canadian wargame property.

On top of other issues retailers are facing, rents, local business rates/taxes... If you are from the UK and the late 80s/early 90's, GW Retail cribbing GW Wholesale's homework and opening a Warhammer store just round the corner from the local Games Store and having "opening sales"... for months... London used to have like 12 indie/sole premise games shops all reachable by an LT Travel card (you could do like half in a day if you want to spend time in them and started early), only Leisure Games remains because they pivoted to online sales early, Orcs Nest is not one of the originals and its survival still confuses me (though welcome) and must be because they were both a physical and online store from the start. And this was happening in major towns around the country. I now only buy from GW only when all other options turn up a blank.

When my Dad retired he bought a small Bicycle shop, he enjoyed his hobby of fixing bikes and made a little money, his income base was 10% Cyclists making a niche purchase, and 90% repairs of bikes purchased from big box stores. The owner the building decided he was under-charging on the rent, come lease renewal all six shops in the building had their rent tripled, all six closed down, and the building sat empty for six months until the owner dropped the rent back closer to what he was originally charging. You are right about the changing times, It seems to be a common remark about the speed of new releases currently, you used to be able to purchase something, paint it, and play the game. Now it it's more you need to buy at product in a tiny time frame before it is discontinued, most of projects get "put aside" as next week something new is going to drop.

In the US Two Thin Coats is pretty easy, but my experience with Green Stuff World is that the margin is devoured by exchange rates and sometimes they can be rather interesting with their listings. For Tamiya in the US it's not that hard to get, but I can imagine in Canada it's probably a pain.

Getting into the FLGS business to make money is a sucker's bet and has been since the 80's. Sure, a tiny card only shop might make enough money for a lower middle class lifestyle with the occasional boom cycle making up for the bust cycles. But the traditional gaming store is a hobby business, you need something else to pay the bills.
