Omg, for years I've been describing Games Workshop as my abusive Ex. People keep telling me they've changed, they're better now. But the minute I give them my time again, it's back to there old ways
I have a group of 5 guys I’ve been playing with since the mid-90’s. 3 of them work pin the same foundry, I own a guide/outfitters business here, and the other is a lawyer. So aside from when the Lawyer was in university, we’ve all been here in the same area. We also have a 12 man Old World league, and infrequent AOS games.
If you played Warcry you would feel differently about this. You would hold everyone who doesn't warcry in quiet contempt. You would live a fulfilled life knowing every day that you are right.
I get the point you are making - it is more about the people than the game, but the game does matter, at least a little bit. As much as I like my gaming group, I don‘t think I would happily stand around for multiple hours playing a game I hate (and there are games I hate…). Luckily I live in a large city and although I tend to favour more niche games, having access to a large group of players (we have a city multi-game discord) means I can usually find people to game with without compromising. In fact, my current gaming group has been together now for about 8 or so years and we still focus on the same few games that brought us together.
Yay garbage time. I think this was a great video, because I beleive you have unwittingly proved your point quite well, regarding understanding the entire point why we gather with our friends to play with dollies. To gather with our friends. Everything else is secondary, including the choice of game. The hobby together suggestion is pretty great. We used to have a game shop in Minneapolis where the hobby table was the literal heart of the shop. The majority of the time any regular spent there was at that fine table. This video seems to be a distillation of that point, and why they are so much more popular than just sit down and hobby videos. Because the chit chat videos emulate that experience. Seeing you both yuck it up and making delightful Garbage Time is no different from that experience sitting at Tower games at the hobby table.
Nice to have such a consistent group! The group I was playing w8th had a bit too much attrition, so been trying out new games to meet more people in the area.
I kinda agree, in as much as who you game with is more important than the game as it is a focus of social activity. It is not the rules specifically that determine if it works for a gaming session as different rules give different gaming experiences and it is the experience and how it aligns with what you feel like on that occasion that matters. However, some games honestly offer bad experiences, and honestly, you would probably have a better time doing literally anything else. The strongest example in my mind was the last kill team box, 2 of us who have played all breeds of rules for over 20 years each spent a day working through that dreadful rule book, working together to figure out how it was meant to work, 3 slow games and on the 3rd we got it playing smoothly and working correctly and it was mediocrity personified ... finished the last game and went was that it? Wasn't fun as the rule book was actively in the way, and the experience was just dull, with a lot of illusions of choice and no actual meaningful choices. Aside from painting terrain went back into the box for both of us never to emerge
It's not the game on the table that counts, it's the people around it. I've played so many different games; RPGs, miniatures, board, and it's always the people that make it fun.
People like me, who do not want to socialize and just want to show up to play some games, suffer in this hobby. Maybe we don't belong... or shouldn't belong... I don't know... I do know that dealing with the garbage you get from other gamers has kept me off the table with another person for years. Maybe it's my fault or maybe I don't have the coping mechanisms to deal with how many horrible people play 40k. If I had a nickel for every time I've watched two people yell at each other over a tabletop game in a LGS or a tournament, I'd be wealthy.
You’re actually describing the exact reason why it’s beneficial to socialize in the hobby. If you find someone who is cool and doesn’t yell/rule lawyer you horrendously, you should link up on social media so you can get more games in with someone who isn’t annoying or anxiety provoking!
I feel like infinity has the tightest rules. Locally, here in Seoul, it was surprising to see how many players got pulled into our group by Battletech.
One wargame lately that has gotten my friends together and gatewayed into Warhammer 40K and the other adjacent ones was One Page Rules (OPR). It got them painting, creating lists, getting into the mechanics of it all and also you can build up armies real easy and leap from OPR to Warhammer stuff or Warcrow, battletech and a few others we are playing now. Crazy how you get a few printed up figures and next thing they are hitting up stores for the quality figs to paint and field.
Win or lose it doesn't matter to me or the gamers in my group - just getting together, pushing some minis and rolling some dice is where the fun it. Some of the most fun I've ever had was in games I've lost but something really epic happened. I haven't played competitive since 40k 4th edition.
F*off no way, really? People will be excited to see stuff at your story only to turn around and buy it on Amazon? Oh man, that's crazy. Enjoyed "garbage time" guys. I I love your videos. Thank you for the time as always.
Garbage Time Come on, grab your friends We'll go to very Garbage lands With Amazon Guy and Board Game Groover The fun will never end, it's Garbage Time I'm here for any and all Garbage Time. And yes, definitely support your FLGS if you can. I'm fortunate to have an excellent one to support. Cheers!
Unironically, it is probably the better way to approach the 'mechanics' side of the mini hobby. At the end of the day, it's about friends and painted army men.
@@BotRetro I know, it was in jest. I fully agree that if you play the best game in the world with the wrong people, you'll have a bad time. And the opposite holds.
Do you guys have 'furniture' costumers? We called them like that... People that maybe came once and you talked to them nicely (because it's your store and you are supposed to be nice), maybe they told you about an RPG campaign or an army they were building and for some reason they never leave. They start to show up once or twice a week, sit on a chair and only occasionally talk. They're looking at their phone or a book or something but they're just... there. If you ask them if they're waiting for someone they'll say no but they can be there for hours doing nothing, so we joked with things like 'no, he's a piece of furniture' or 'he came with the store' or 'we opened a cursed box from our distributor and he was inside, they aren't accepting returns'. Sometimes local groups assimilate them, sometimes they stay there. Forever. Like 'go home I have to close the store now'. I even had one that waited outside the store for us to open, then sit in a corner.
never as an adult but that was me as a kid in 8th grade at my local comic shop. they didnt like me reading the new comics but they'd let me enjoy the dollar bin comics which was cool.
I played Confrontation 'cause I liked the people playing it. Now I'm thinking about getting into Bushido 'cause one of my friends is deeply invested in the game. I don't like the game mechanics of either. I stopped playing 40k because of the people that plays it at the club. Then I stopped going to the club.
Went to my local store to buy a couple of blood bowl teams. Didn't stock them. I think they were online only through GW. I ended up having to buy online, at which point I decided to buy figures, not from GW. At this point I wasn't support my local stores anyway. I think this is a shame to the local store, because I'm not supporting them. Also GW because I'm not giving them a reason to support BB in the long run. I have no desire to buy into large army games. I mostly enjoy paining, when I have some free time. It's a bonus if I get a game, which I can play with my other half. Overall, I am disappointed with GW. I will say that I think the GW BB teams are well priced for the quality of the miniatures. They just don't give you much roster options, which is a shame. If you do want options then you don't have a good way to fill the gaps. Back in the day, I could mail order individual metal miniatures. e.g. extra gobos, halflings, human blitzers etc. GW just are not giving me the options that I want.
You can always give your local shop a chance to order those minis in for you, most shops can get something relatively fast. But yea i get it. It's hard sometimes 😪
Lords of War Games and Hobbies will go down in history as the great blasphemer of the mighty hex. You are the school bullies shoving the kid in the hallway and Underworlds is the dork picking up their school books. Its fun, isn't it? But once time has passed and Underworlds is the guy working for google making 6 figures with ALL the babes, your only move will be shaking your fist in the sky and REGRETTING the days you picked on such a simple and perfect gaming system.
So 40k is McDonald’s. I guess that tracks. You only play because you have to play something and sometimes there’s no other choice, but you feel like sick and guilty afterwards.
700$ per army , 5$ per hour of playing at the store. Between 15 to 50$ to get to a store. Taking awsy time from work or stuff to be done at the house , after hours invested in painting. In a world where people make around 10k$ yearly . Oh l tell you that you feel the realness of the game everytime you look at your bank saldo.
Coming from a country with no tipping culture, having an expectation that you will have to spend a hidden appropriate amount of money every time you enter an establishment is just weird guilt sales to me.
You just described 40K like an abusive relationship that its easier to stay in than break up hahahah
I have said for years GW is my bad, bad boyfriend.
Stockholm Syndrome Baby! 😂😂😂
Yeah but he never apologizes; so deep down I know it's my fault.
Where's the lie tho

Love the "oops... all garbage time" shows! I'd also watch an entire episode of Jay dunking on everything 😂

In my middle age, dad mode, there is only one question that matters - are you having fun playing the game?
Facts. Sometimes this takes people a little longer to figure out
You are correct it absolutely doesn't matter.

You said that the game you play doesn't matter. So it means you'll play more ToW, because even if you don't like it, it doesn't matter, right?😂
I second this! 😉
Sometimes the game isn't as important if people you enjoy hanging out with people you're playing against.
