The thing is this isn't a book that lends itself to a hollywood adaptation. The whole thing is it critques toxic beauty standards for teenage girls but Hollywood's marketing methods rely on exactly what the book is critqueing. It was always doomed to fail
Exactly!! I had this exact conversation with my brother years ago when we first read the series and were like "man, Uglies should get a movie" and then we thought really hard about it and were like "oh, wait..."
And Hollywood simply cannot and will not have anybody “ugly” on screen. The closest we’d get is unique looking people but nobody society deems unattractive. And they would put makeup on them anyway.
the fact that the pretties barely look any different makes it even worse, like they could have made an argument that even beautiful hollywood people are ugly compared to the extreme makeover of the pretties (like is literally said in the book when she sees old magazines) if the pretties were more similar to the book descriptions in having the uncanny extreme proportions designed to make you let down your guard or whatever, then at least there would be enough contrast to justify it to some extent
my issue with the pretties is they dont look freakish enough. like they are supposed to have MUCH MORE exaggerated features then what they did in the show. they are so supposed to look like uncanny elita angel dolls. theres a scene in the books when tally sees a magazine from the rusties (our time period) and finds the MODELS in it ugly.
I feel like they should have their faces filled with Botox, like FILLED TO THE BRIM. That already looks insanely uncanny and would work well as body horror if done well
The whole "but joey king isn't ugly" thing actually makes sense in the books, where the main character sees a model on a billboard from before the "apocalypse" and is in awe of the way that "uglies" used to be confident enough to be on posters "back in the day." The implication being that what we now consider to be conventionally attractive becomes ugly in that future. The book is supposed to be a commentary on how perfectly attractive features are being more and more pathologized. The books are actually pretty good by pre teen standards, this movie just did an absolutely horrendous job at adapting them.

"CONGRATULATIONS FOR YOUR ENGAGEMENT NIKKI!!!!!!" We all say with tears in our orbs and joyfull smiles, the sky is the colour of cat vomit, the wind of autumn flows her beautiful hair.
The comment on the "uglies" living situation really got me thinking. I think what some distopean stories lack is that grungy "someone-throw-you-a-slice-of-bread-or-youll-die" look and opt for this super high tech and expensive look. What makes the "hunger games" future so much scarier (at least to me) is that most people in america will always be closer to that reality than we ever would be to a "rich" future
I had a similar thought but I wanted to add that it perhaps suggests how out of touch many directors, writers, producers etc are that a concrete boring high rise is their idea of dystopian, 2nd class, poverty stricken environment.
Call me a hater but when I read this book as an ugly child with severe ocd, you couldn’t pay me not to choose becoming a pretty. Like you mean to tell me all my worries will disappear and I won’t be bullied anymore, sign me up baby. Edit: I literally read the whole series and that was 10 year old me’s take away
I feel like, even as an adult, the choice to become a pretty is actually a little more…wanted? I mean not only do I get to stop being insecure about things like body image and facial features but I also don’t have to worry about money or education or work or anything. I can basically just be beautiful and live in a Dubai-esque city partying the entire time. Who the fuck wouldn’t want that? lmao
@@saloosh777 Real, attractive people don't realise how good they actually have it. Then again, a whole lot of people who have been attractive their whole lives start having crises when they start aging.
See that would be different for me because I don't wanna be attractive to anyone so becoming "prettier" for people to potentially have a crush on me is scary. These are the Aroace horrors that could've been explored but we don't get much recognised. Shame.
@saloosh777 To be honest, I have a dream job in the back of my mind and I would hate to live without purpose. Also, partying all day would become boring ngl. And I'm more of an introvert so I would rather have more alone time than party with strangers. I also think that education is important and I like learning stuff, so sign me out.
27:18 to be in defense of the “contraband” book for a moment, choosing walden was a really interesting choice by the set designers in my opinion. for over a century, the main speculations as to why thoreau wrote the book was that he may have been conducting a sort of social experiment on himself, trying to see if he could manage to live - or even live better - when completely shut out from modern society and the luxuries it has to offer. since the entire concept of the pretty society is how anything you could ever want is at your disposal, completely free of cost (at the cost of their intelligence and individuality), it’s almost a sort of hidden commentary that i find really fascinating
If you thought 'Uglies' was a wild book by Scott Westerfield. His book 'Peeps' is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay crazier. He didn't just try to capitalize on the dystopia genre. Peeps is a vampire romance novel, but there is a twist. You don't become a vampire by being bit. Instead, vampirism is passed as an STD. Absolutely wild
One of the best videos showing the differences between the book and the movie Is Lavender Townie's video where she draws the description of the characters in the books and gives a very good idea how they probably look compared to the movie and also give more insight on how different the prettys are in the book from normal conventionaly attractive people and it not just it being a bold glammer filter.
10:45 do folks remember when JK Rowling tweeted that she'd "Always pictured Hermione as black." And then she deleted her tweet after someone asked: "Does that include when you described her hair as 'messy'?" 😂
im pretty sure the necklace sent a signal that it had been destroyed, and cable followed that signal to the last known location of the necklace. i read this FOREVER ago, but if i remember correctly, cable EXPECTED tally to eventually defect and destroy the necklace.
Of all the Scott Westerfield books to adapt they had to choose this??? Bro I stg if they chose the leviathan series we’d be having a WAYYYY different conversation.
I haven’t finished the video but I’m kinda wondering why people don’t talk about how gay Tally and Shay were for most of the movie? Tally’s relationship with David felt out of nowhere and honestly I was envisioning a much older guy from the way they described him
@@Fstop313 People who watch movie reviews don't always know the book the movie it is based on ... they also don't always know the movie that is reviewed.

I want to know where the parents are. Like only pretty people can have kids right unless like teen pregnancy? But then the children would be uglies so do you just send your baby off to Ugly Town? Ive never read the book or seen the movie but im suuuuper confused about the logistics lol
parents live in basically the suburbs and keep their kids (littlies) with them until they’re 12?, if i remember correctly, and then they go to uglyville until they can get the surgery. littlies “ugly” features are seen as cute though until they start going through puberty. highly recommend the books though tbh n_n
@@sagebrielle5385I've actually added the books to my reading list! The idea of exploring/criticizing beauty standards in this way sounds really interesting
Basically pretties get another surgery where they turn into "middle pretties" and move to the suburbs, and at that point they do get jobs and also reproduce. As said above, the "littles" live with their parents until 12 and then go to uglyville. And when they become seniors they become late pretties 😂
It's been ages since I read the books, but I think I remember enough to explain decently well: So, when you turn 16, you get the operation and become a Pretty, and then you move to the other side of the river to Pretty Town. You then spend the next, like, 14 years (I don't remember the exact amount of time) partying, drinking, and getting weird, freaky, cosmetic surgeries, and then when you hit thirty or so, you move to a different part of the city that's basically suburbia, get married, have a kid who is considered an Ugly, they live with you until they're like 12 or something, and then you send them off to Ugly Town where they live in dorms and go to school until they turn 16 and go off to get the Pretty surgery, and then the cycle repeats. While you're in Ugly Town, your parents can visit you, but you can't visit them, and then when you move to Pretty Town, you can never go back to Ugly Town or where you lived with your parents until it's time for you to have kids. Hope that clears things up.

Since mortal instruments was just mentioned I must add in that the incest thing between the mc and her not-brother is a Major plot point in multiple of the books and its also not the only incest plot. I'm legally obligated to mention it because I read most of that series in highschool and the pain haunts me
Omg yeah. I love the shadowhunter books, but the mortal instruments is the worst of the worst series in that universe. I read it as a preteen and never opened it again.
i’m like 99% sure that author has a history of writing incest plots prior to the shadowhunter books. which i think is yucky but it’s so much yuckier to include your fetish into your books who’s main demographic is minors. i know some people will argue it’s a young adult series but we all recognize it’s mostly teenagers. and maybe i am shaming but i find it disgusting to fetishize incest at all BUT if you’re going to do it, can’t you keep it separate?
@@mr.bingusthecat To be fair, as far as I know of 'before' she wrote that in fanfiction (though she has denied ever writing it and I have never seen concrete proof of anything so can't comment) and not in an actual book, which is a vastly different world and should not be judged with published writing content standards of morality. She has since said though that she regrets a lot of what she wrote in mortal instruments, and as a reader of her current other series I can atleast attest that no weird gross plots like this have occurred and her writing has vastly improved in the decades since. That's not to say that she doesn't have many other problems but yeah. Hopefully this makes sense haha Edited for grammatical errors
As soon as it was like maybe he’s her brother in the books and it got at all confusing about that fact, I was like I don’t need this in my life, and just read the Wikipedia plot summaries for the rest of the books lmao, I cannot stand incest/pseudo-incest romance plot lines, it’s too yuck for me.
Even in a movie about “Uglies” they couldn’t be bothered to cast someone actually unconventionally attractive. This wasn’t a book that should’ve been adapted. They thought they could get away with it but we all said nah and I’m glad we did
Basically, the point of the book is to show that conventionally attractive people are seen as ugly. The pretties are supposed to be unrealistically beautiful that it ends up being scary. There was a scene in the book of an old magazine from our time where Tally describes the people that we see as pretty as ugly. Im not mad btw
Girl we need a follow up video for the Jeffree star series! Especially now that he’s trying to do a comeback with the beauty killer palette/revamp of his old music career.
Also wanted to drop here that like… the plot of uglies is almost ENTIRELY the plot of the Twilight Zone’s “Number 12 Looks Just Like You.” The author even admitted that he’d seen it when he was younger,, like even the original BOOK is another concept done arguably (arguably, because know the twilight zone is really direct and doesn’t have a lot of nuance) worse. 😋😁
It also reminded me of Eye of the Beholder also from Twilight Zone, which gets the idea that beauty doesnt have to what we think as beautiful but instead more monstrous in our opinions
i'm guessing they were trying to build off of the hype that The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes got (teen dystopian book from 2020 which is a prequel to the hunger games trilogy) but they managed to fail miserably, which isn't out of character for netflix to do!
00:40 The way i only know "Mortal Instruments" as "that book that apparently started as a Ron/Ginny Weasley incest fan fiction by a middle aged harry potter fan in the early 00s"
The book/movie glossing over the racial implications of beauty standards being essentially Caucasian features, but also the character's "ugly" nicknames are "Squint" (because of squinty eyes) and "Nose" (because of big nose) is... Interesting... Especially since many of the principal cast are either Asian or black...
Iirc the book does explicitly mention that the mirror thingy they play around with “fixes” Shay’s skin to be lighter but I don’t think it’s addressed much outside of that? So still bad but the book seemed at least a bit more self aware
When I watched this with my friend we also 100% thought Shay was in love with Tali LOL 😂 I've never read the book so I like that you keep giving tidbits about what's different or not. Ty!!

Guys this is so off topic but the ad before this video was an ad for a SHOW Markiplier was ACTING IN. I dunno why but I had to share bc I didn’t know it was a thing and that’s so cool. But also on topic: I read Peeps by this dude and by far a better series, if just as trippy and not actually necessarily should have been aimed at kids. In Uglies, my issues are the glorifying of self harm, be it the actual c()tting or the plastic surgery procedure thing that is TERRIFYING (the veneers, bro, wtf) or the mental damage purposely inflicted on those not “useful” (like okay, just call it walking euthanasia, that’s what it is); it isn’t really something that overall promotes normal and healthy ANYTHING. And on top of that, the adaptation then went on to miss the mark every second it could bc I bet they didn’t read the book. It’s just not a book series built for adaptation, and that’s okay. Not all of them are. Like how I’m worried Fourth Wing and ACOTAR ones are just going to damage the fandom further or how it was disappointing when then adapted Shadow and Bone (they didn’t have to do the characters that dirty).

Not even fat people are allowed to have softer jaws in media!! They're always sculpted out from makeup or they're ready made and built in with the person(which of course. Isn't a problem. Everyone has their own body, and each body has its own way of distributing fat BUT LIKE????)
Where are my people with circle faces? Long oval faces? Squared faces? And no not the chiseled diamond jawline square. I mean Holy Shit Is That Minecraft Steve squared faces.
Give me variety!!! I'm so tired of being insecure about something that could easily be added into media, and I'm ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that my Shaped Brethren feel the same.
If cartoons can do it, so can we. The conventionally attractive people will still be there to film the next movie. But we are a rarity.
@@EranRayeTHANK YOU! Having a moonface has given me serious confidence issues since quite literally *everyone* in media has a jawline that could cut glass. Like, oh my god, can I please have *one* person who looks even remotely like me, please? It feels like I'm a freak because of it all.

Maybe the real uglies was the friends we made along the way
that one tweet
LMAOOOOO
YES!! Exactly this.
“We all have to work, even our elders”
Yeah sorry that would’ve had me nope out instantly. If old people gotta work then your society sucks balls 💀
just like our capitalist society we currently live in. shit sux
your @ is literally perfect
May as well have said "we all have to work, even our handicapped"
ME 👏🏾 FUCKING 👏🏾 TOO
I was like, “I could get surgery to fix my ugly teeth and skin??!!”
Yo I remember that plot in a webcomic my friend showed me lol
This actually sounds so funny now I wanna read it 😭
HELP??? thats…a concept for sure
they should make health classes read this book since they bring up so much fear mongering of sex anyways
@@HazZzel-STDs sounds funny? 😅
10:45 do folks remember when JK Rowling tweeted that she'd "Always pictured Hermione as black."

Let’s freaxing go
Of all the Scott Westerfield books to adapt they had to choose this??? Bro I stg if they chose the leviathan series we’d be having a WAYYYY different conversation.
Netflix is producing an animated adaptation of Leviathan; It's coming out in 2025
I haven’t finished the video but I’m kinda wondering why people don’t talk about how gay Tally and Shay were for most of the movie? Tally’s relationship with David felt out of nowhere and honestly I was envisioning a much older guy from the way they described him
for real the story literally would’ve made so much more sense if tally was in love with shay
Have you not read the book
@@Fstop313whats in the book?
@@Fstop313 People who watch movie reviews don't always know the book the movie it is based on ... they also don't always know the movie that is reviewed.
@@silent935 there are many relationships in these books platonic and romantic but I feel like the dystopian society and horrors are more of the focus here. It’s an incredible series and I won’t stand for it being reduced to petty romantic stuff that isn’t even the focus
I'm so confused on why they did not just make this an animated movie. It would've 100% performed so much better.
exactly i agree
It's been ages since I read the books, but I think I remember enough to explain decently well:
So, when you turn 16, you get the operation and become a Pretty, and then you move to the other side of the river to Pretty Town.
Same
ur eyeshadow is pretty and i love that it matches ur hair. i love ur vids cause im like ive never heard anything about this in my life, oh nikki made a video about it? ok im invested. you do a great job of making things that people might of never heard of interesting. wish you all the best!!!
Hopefully this makes sense haha
Edited for grammatical errors
As soon as it was like maybe he’s her brother in the books and it got at all confusing about that fact, I was like I don’t need this in my life, and just read the Wikipedia plot summaries for the rest of the books lmao, I cannot stand incest/pseudo-incest romance plot lines, it’s too yuck for me.
@@xbluebirdxWhat newer work of hers would you recommend? 🫶🏼

Very fitting for Joey to be a co producer to film about eugenics

i'm guessing they were trying to build off of the hype that The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes got (teen dystopian book from 2020 which is a prequel to the hunger games trilogy) but they managed to fail miserably, which isn't out of character for netflix to do!
it's a crying shame that the uglies was turned into a movie instead of the leviathan series :/ also congrats on your engagement!!!

Thats not a show Markiplier is acting in... that's Markiplier's show 👀👀
Markiplier made the show too
