I know it is just a personal preference, but I chose to go with the S Preferred Trim. In addition to those differences explained in the video, auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink and moonroof are additional features I get. I think the overall combination of leatherette vs genuine leather, power lift gate, auto-dimming mirror, HomeLink functionality, moonroof, and power-adjusted memory seat is worth the price difference of $1700.

One thing to add: I was a Subaru fan and this time I was going to add another Subaru (Forester). However, when I found the updated side crash results from the IIHS, I had to rethink my choice. Although Subaru Forester was acceptable in the updated side crash test, one UNACCEPTABLE part for me was that rear passenger head protection was poor. My child is always sitting in that rear seat, and I could not ignore this drawback. So, I am totally new to Mazda, and this is how I ended up coming to experience Mazda.

Finally, a video that really gives enough comparative information on the trim levels for the CX 5. I too, would choose the Preferred trim level which gives you power adjustable seats for both the driver and passenger. IMO, every trim level above the Preferred caters to specific desires and not needs (in which .a vehicle purchaser should be placing oemphasis on needs first and then desires after that and of course affordability ) for example, heated steering wheels is an overkill item, but hey, if someone really wants to spend the extra money for it, be happy and do it, I just dont see it as a valuable item at the upgraded price point, as compared to a remote starter and a pair of driving gloves in cold weather, speaking from experience of living in Michigan, Missouri, Illinois, North Dakota, Washington state, Virginia and South Korea (all of which are cold, and snowy). Yea, the Preferred trim level is the sweet spot.

Yeah I could not find a base trim or I would have bought that. But I could not stomach the next trim up which has the awful leatherette with the fake suede inserts. I just see those seats looking terribly worn after three years.

Interesting take. Back in 2020 I went with the Signature trim level and still think it's a fantastic value for all you get, but I was shopping against the 2020 Lexus NS, BMW X-3, and Acura RDX. Once you equip those roughly similar turbo powered cars with the same level of options that come with the Signature trim level, the Signature looks like a smoking deal.

Certainly if you're comparing the CX-5 to those near premium/premium brands, then I can totally see where you're coming from. I try to just focus on each model individually, otherwise these videos could get unwieldy. For example, some people may be willing to pay more for an improved dealer experience, lower NVH, etc.--that's why I generally stick to evaluating value only within one model.

Yeah, unfortunately, I know some people who refuse to buy a vehicle with dark/black rims, or they only want particular exterior colors, so if you like the look of the Carbon Edition, then it absolutely makes sense! However, it's hard to universally recommend a particular trim purely because of the cosmetic changes it comes with.

I agree - I think because it's a special edition, it will hold a higher resale value.
I ended up buying the CE because I got it for just about $500 more than the Preferred. The CE truly stands out in its styling - while it's essentially the same vehicle, the subtle trim changes make a huge difference in looks.

Quite honestly, there are even more differences between the Signature and Turbo trim: a frameless rear view mirror, upgraded interior LED lighting, different colored rims, etc., etc. However, I try to strike a balance between being comprehensive while also making things easily digestible. My goal is to hit on the differences that most people will actually engage/interact with on a daily basis that likely make the biggest difference in the experience. I certainly may not always get that balance right though!

I personally do not like HUD, but I agree with the adaptive headlights. I currently drive Subaru Outback Limited with Steering Responsive Headlights (SRH). This is quite equivalent to the Adaptive Headlights of Mazda. I feel this option really helps when driving on a very dark road. A couple comments:
    1. The 19 inch wheels are more than simply cosmetic. The 19 inch wheels give better handling performance, as you would expect from lower profile tire. I've driven both the 17 and 19 inch. If your a bit of a spirited drive, it's noticeable. But, the 19 inch wheels give a bit more of a harsher ride, feeling the bumps in the road more so.
    2. For some the sun roof is a big deal. And that's why I purchased the Preferred trim. It was lowest trim that offered and sun roof. It had everything else I wanted, other than 19 inch wheel.

Also, Mazda should get rid of Premium and combine Carbon and Premium to make it Carbon Premium with option for Turbo or call it Turbo Carbon Edition. Or get rid of the Plus as a trim and make it as an option. package.

I’ve had my CX-5 for a month now. I’ve never had the screen impede my vision.

Per Mazda's site, the fuel tank is over 15 gallons, which is larger than the CR-V, Tucson, and RAV4. You're right that the Mazda does get a bit worse fuel economy than those competitors, but I don't think real-world range is that different (however, it all depends on how conservative Mazda's fuel gauge is...on some cars it will read "empty" even when there are still 3+ gallons left in the tank)

I guess if you’re planning on taking it on long road trips that would factor in but not general every day driving.
