  • Why am I comparing the 2022 Mazda CX-5 Signature Turbo against the 2022 Acura RDX A-Spec Elite? Well, it's no secret that Mazda wants to become a premium brand and a while back, I compared the CX-9 against the MDX. The CX-9 genuinely felt like a premium product against the MDX. So I was wondering if the same stood true when you downsize the cars. Hence I made this comparison and in some aspects, the RDX and the CX-5 surprised me.
    The powertrain of the 2022 Acura RDX A-Spec remains unchanged. The 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine produces 272 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque (203 kW & 380 Nm). The peak torque is reached at a low 1,600 rpms and is sustained until the rpms reach 4,500. That means that the engine doesn’t feel as though it’s straining to get the 1,873 kg (4,129 lbs) body up to speed.
    The 2022 Mazda CX-5 is available with two engine options. Well, technically it’s the same engine but with or without a turbocharger; and of course a few other changes to accommodate the turbo. This top spec Signature CX-5 has the turbocharger. It is a 2.5L 4-cylinder and it can produce 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque (167 kW & 420 Nm) when it is running on regular octane fuel. If you use premium fuel, this engine produces 256 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque (191 kW & 434 Nm). For the 2022 model year, it gets those extra 6 hp. Interestingly, if you use regular fuel, the engine’s peak torque figure is reached at 500 rpms lower than if you were to use premium fuel.
    The Acura RDX 2022 starts from $46,900 CAD ($40,600 USD, FWD) with this top spec Platinum A-Spec Elite costing $59,100 CAD ($52,600 UDSD). There are no other packages or options to choose from apart from paint and accessories.
    The starting price of the Mazda CX-5 2022 is $30,500 CAD ($26,250 USD, S trim). This fully loaded Signature trim costs $43,650 CAD ($39,000 USD) excluding paint and accessory options.

    I looked at both before I bought my CX5 Signature. To get the same options, you have to get the A-Spec at $12k more than the Signature CX5. I agree the A-Spec is better equipped, but not worth $12k. I like how the reviewer says, the RDX is a little bit more a little bit more until the price. And that he would buy the RDX if he could afford it, but he can't....lol. Well that's the point, a little bit more refinement for a lot more money, hence the bang for the buck or smart choice it the CX5.

    The CX5 is an excellent SUV and yeah Mazda isn’t a luxury brand but their cars feel like it, however Acura is a legit luxury brand throughout and the difference is noticeable, 3 months ago i was in the market for an sporty SUV and test drove the top trim level CX5 Turbo AWD and loved it but then i test drove the RDX A-Spec Advanced and isn’t even close, the Acura is on another level specially the handling with the SH-AWD and Adaptive Dampers is a killer combo and the materials and build quality is without saying more premium as well, needless to say i ended up buying the RDX and spending almost $20K more😂😂 is worth it in my opinion.

  • @tuyhl

    I’m 2022 RDX owner and the fuel economy is about average 12L/100KM which includes 80% city and 20% highway. Even I drove on highway at 110km/h that was still 10L/100KM. I think they need a new engine that brings better fuel economy since it’s turbocharged. Plus, 10th gear is after 90km/h. That means worse fuel economy when it’s any faster than 90km/h. Not sure keeping 110km/h at 2000rpm+ is the right tweak. Other than fuel economy and touch pads, it’s a good reliable car for sure. Looking to drive it for the next 10 years or even longer.

    I’ve been cross driving the CX-5 and CX-9 with the RDX and MDX since January 2022 and this is my opinion, in both Acuras, I felt disconnected to the car because of the very lightweight steering even in sport mode and that brake-by-wire system. Honestly, I was expecting heavier feel from the steering since they were SUVs but I didn’t get it from Acura. I found all those shortcomings of Acura in Mazda(my personal preference), the precise steering and conventional hydraulic brakes. And not to mention the value of your money is really worth it with Mazda especially those Signature trims where many auto journalists have been comparing to some premium brands.

    • @MGReviewsBlog
      @MGReviewsBlog  2 года назад +2

      I don't mind the lighter steering feel of the RDX especially when I'm just driving around town, which would be 95% of the time. It makes it easier to maneuver and park. It would be nice if the steering firmed up a bit more in Sport mode but can't have everything. As for the electric brake booster, it's not as bad as the one in the MDX (at least the tuning and feel of it for me). But I totally agree with you that the Signature trims of the Mazda SUVs offer great value. For some, these make more sense than the more expensive Acura's.

      As a Mazda6 owner my best bet for the moolah is the cx5. For comfort efficiency without breaking another 25k ish you’re getting damn near everything. Hi, I am in the market for a new crossover. I am looking at 2 Acura RDX with A spec and Advance packages, and Genesis GV70 with select package. I am getting RDX for 1000USD more than GV70 but has 3000 miles on it, I am ok with that. Acura has adaptive dampers and a better AWD system, and GV70 has better engine and transmission by numbers. The main frustration with RDX would be the track pad and GV70 has better infotainment system overall. What would you choose overall.

    • @MGReviewsBlog
      @MGReviewsBlog  2 года назад +1

      Hmm that is a tough choice. Between those two specific trims, I'd still go with the Acura.Yes the trackpad is very annoying (especially if you use CarPlay or Android Auto) but it does become muscle memory after a while. The GV70 is better with the V6 engine for me.

    That said, while the drive isn't necessarily bad, our first generation RDX ('09, with over 220k miles) is so much more engaging. I really thought the Mazda ma be a good consideration for our next vehicle (if the RDX ever dies, which I see no signs of!), but that thought ended after I took it for a drive.

    Absolutely disappointing, it was a great drivers vehicle and a lot of bang for the buck. The non touch screen interface is unacceptable also.

    Nobody buys a turbo engine thinking of reliability and fuel efficiency and or fuel consumption. You buy Acura RDX or MDX because you enjoy SHAWD sysrem with torque vectoring and because you want s plush ride. My bought an MDX in 2011, i still own it. The naturally aspirated engine with SHAWD is amazing. I dont miss my CX7 which is why Mazda now makes the CX5. Although a turbo can be a fun experience, reality check, they are not reliable. Eventually causing premature engine failures. Acura should stick to V6 only.

    $16k price gap worth it? Sorry I don't see how given the difference that was mentioned really is slightly quieter with road noise, larger sunroof, larger HUD (BTW I thought Mazda HUD size could be adjusted), slight more leg room but less head room in the rear. So those things mentioned are not worth it at all. OK Yes the interior in the front looks more modern but there is a hell of a lot of clutter and goings on as well where as the Mazda is minimal and I prefer that look/feel. If the Acura was $5k more then sure there is a battle of decisions but not at $16k difference there isn't at all, Mazda for the win.

      Ps, I don't think there's any car with an adjustable size for the HUD. I know it's possible to change the height, the tilt angle, and the content that is displayed but not the actual size. Or did you mean the size of the font? That I have seen before.

    In both cases, seriously the lack of touchscreen is a problem. No rotary knob or touchpad is ever going to have the ease of use of a touchscreen, which literally every regular car has these days, the weird knobs and touchpads are primarily in the luxury segment. You also have one major option in the Mazda that the Acura lacks. You can spec down to the base engine and take a big chunk off the price and get better fuel economy if you're willing to live without the extra power of the turbo. The CX-5 base engine is quite good in its own right, but Mazda really does need to put the 8 speed auto from the CX-9 into the rest of the lineup. You did mention the ZF 8 speed, but that is not an option for transverse mount engines, the transverse option is the ZF 9 speed which is a total POS.
