Living here in the States, I never knew that VW even offered an estate version of the Arteon, and I’ve been a fan of the Arteon for some time now. It looks extremely sexy imo, and definitely has its own style that sets it apart from a majority of vehicles on the road.

Wagons went out of fashion in the U.S. a long time ago. Even if it were imported American wouldn't pay that for a VW emblem. Even if it is just as capable and as well built as it more expensive German rivals.
Rather than a top spec'ed VW, they pay that for an entry level Audi, Mercedes, or BMW. Americans are badge obsessed. Still, Toyota manages to sell a dozen cars that cost more without needing to put them under its luxury Lexus badge.
The current TOYOTA RAV4 Prime (a formally entry level family SUV) now can top 50k! There's also the Toyota Highlander. Haven heard any reviewer say they're too expensive. Go figure.

@@krane15it’s unfortunate that you can’t just get any car from anywhere in the world. I would have this estate version of the Arteon in a heartbeat. I like the hatchback version, but the wagon version is even cooler. Hatchbacks are doing well in the US, why can’t they just bring this one. Or at least let people pay more to import it. I had a Passat wagon, and I loved it. It sucks loving things that the majority doesn’t. I love standing out, and not being like everyone else. I guess if I really want a wagon, I have to get the Audi A6 Allroad. I do like that car, but the price. The Arteon isn’t cheap either, but it’s not A6 Allroad price.

I‘m driving one of these for nearly two years now and you are right about most things. My top priority was the space and although I might be biased, I think there is no other car on the market that has this much space in a similarly attractive shape.
When driving it for over a week, you’ll start to get used to the strange feeling when turning in tight corners and it will honestly make sense. This car will go round sharp corners like hell with the sport steering and torque vectoring doing their magic.
You did not mention the Nappa seats, which are a pleasure on long distances and even have massage function.
Also, when putting the transmission in S while keeping it in standard sport mode, the exhaust will start making noises no one would expect from a car of this size. There is no fancy Akrapovic branding on the tips but god does this sound good. Still decent on the upshifts but when downshifting on high revs, the party starts.

    • @JoeAchilles1
      @JoeAchilles1  Год назад

Yeah the seats are good, but the awkward driving position ruins their benefits for taller drivers. In terms of handling, it's decent, but it wouldn't see which way an M340i went in reality!

My Golf R 2018 estate has 610 litres of boot space and weighs 1500 kg. For a relatively small car it’s been designed well to maximise space and the boot isn’t compromised by the 4 wheel drive system. A good used one (newer than mine) can be had for less than half of this price. It’s not as pretty as this though. Thankfully it doesn’t have VWs newish non illuminated touch controls, I’m happy with dials.

The only contender is Skoda Superb 280PS. It's 4x4, with many toys included - but it does not look as good. I have owned Superb 4x4 280PS for about 6 months now. I do remeber a year ago, when I was deciding if I should go Arteon R or Superb, I could not make my mind. Price difference was about 12%, so not massive. There were two reasons why I decided to go with Superb - first one (most important) was that Superb has phisical buttons for everythin, including aircon. Second - Superb is is a wolf in sheep's clothing. Yes, Arteon is looking fantastic, yes, it has 40PS/20Nm more (on paper because we all know that these engines come with some gifts from the factory) but the way the car handles is still nowhere near to BMW M340i, or as a matter of fact any BMW :). I am happy (-ish) with my Superb planing on some upgrades to make handling a bit better, and if I was to spend £65k - no way I would pay it for Arteon R.

I know you've driven the Octavia VRS but for a huge boot and rear legroom i'd suggest the superb with the ea888 4x4 drivetrain, was 280bhp on the outgoing model. Thats not claiming to have sporty handling and doesn't have a sporting submodel label like VRS, R or M (performance), both of which appeals to me more for a big practical car!

In most of West EU (so Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France), to my knowledge, these (and most VW's) hold value insanely well, and are constantly among the top selling lists in the premium segment. I own BMW myself but there's no need to tell ourselves nonsense when it comes to other brands.

The MPG is not very good even if you drive in normal mode (which is called sport in settings) but comes up as D1-7 in the dash settings, yet if you choose actual sport by pulling the gear lever back it shows S1-7 on the dash, then it u select Race it still shows S1-7.
The only way I find to get Decent MPG is to put the car in Eco mode but then it's so laggy if you need to get going at times, like for example at a roundabout and there is a gap to go it's so sluggish or if you want to overtake on the motorway.
Example a 17 mile trip down the motorway to work @ 70mph in Eco mode will return 34/35mpg
In Normal mode that will be around 28-30mpg.

@@MotoGraham Just some of the features that they took out from the old model to the new. We had the original Liftback and then upgraded to the wagon.
They removed the traction control button, meaning using launch control was now a pain in the ass, they removed the auto dimming mirror on the passenger side, the digital dash got worse! The quality, the lag was way more noticeable from old gen to new, the bonnet struts were gone and replaced with an old fashioned stick, the steering controls were changed to touch sensitive, the adaptive cruise control was a freaking nightmare on the highway because it’s set up for Europe and brakes when you try and overtake in any lane but the far right, the road noise was worse (although this could have been because we went from liftback to wagon), the rear windows no longer used double glazed windows. Just a lot of little things that added up to big things when you counted them all.

The price is rather high, but it’s a nice car. A colleague of mine just received hers in hybrid trim. In my country you can only get them funny equipped and the hybrid goes for €62000. Since it is a company car it needs to be hybrid and I didn’t like the 1.4. So in the end I went for the V60 T6 which is a bit more powerful (and expensive).

The Skoda Superb 2.0 TSI 270 estate also has the same mechanicals with 4-Motion, offers similar performance, much more space, more practicality and is significantly better value for money.

60 grand! Thats used E53/E63 estate money and i know which i would buy.
It also doesnt do the practicality as well as a Passat estate or indeed an E class. Ive got a 16 year old Passat estate and it has a 650 litre boot and 1650 litres with the seats down so im not sure why boot capacity seems to have got smaller over the years.
The deal breaker for me even on the normal Arteon shooting brake is the lip between the boot and the back of the rear seats when theyre down. The Passat and S213 E class has a fully flat floor so does things even better.
