i've always been a chevy guy and have heard about this car but i figured it was a myth. i just can't believe GM had made 50 million cars ever, that seems like an unreal number even now. it's a beauty.

I just did some quick math in my head and if each of the five divisions sold 400,000 cars per year, it would only take 25 years to get to 50 million. So it is doable. For example, the 1977 Olds Cutlass Supreme sold 750,000 cars in one year alone, and that’s just one model.

Sure does make a guy really scratch his head wondering where the original may have gone and why GM didn't hold on to it. What an absolutely beautiful recreation.

The car will be at the 2024 Detroit Autorama show at the end of the February and other major car shows throughout the year. If you catch it at one of the shows, tell the guys at Snodgrass Chevy that Bob@eClassicAutos sent you...
I was thinking about skipping the Autorama for the first time in about 20 years but I would love to see this in person. I know it’ll be right at the front door for sure 👍🏿
Yes the car has a special display area already reserved up front. Also the team has put together a lot of historical material related on the car which will be available for you to see - this alone will be worth the price of admission. Please stop by and ask Dave or Mike to get a personal tour of their build (just say I sent you). Let them know you saw the video and be sure to tell Mike that he did a great job in the interview - he is now a RUclips star! 👍

What a beautiful job you guys have done. The Ole 55 is just mint looking. I've always wondered what happened to the original 55 it's got to be out there somewhere. Again great job 👍🏻
I understand the actual milestone `55 Chevy was repainted black/white and gold switched for chrome trim and it was re-sold to some GM exec. after the parades were over. Unfortunately, it's been lost to time and nobody knows what became of it. My guess it it was eventually scrapped like any old car.

Yeah, Dave, Mike, and Kenny were at Mecum with their 'Chrom Blues' '55 Chevy convertible. I picked their car the 'Best in Show' at the auction - see my article with 'Custom Show Cars' at: www.eclassicautos.com/mecum-kissimmee-25th-anniversary-auction/

The bel air came of age in ‘55. It was the top of the line until ‘58 when the Impala sub model debuted. After ‘58, the Impala became its own series. This is a great replica of the original 50 millionth car.

I had actually found one of the first '55 Chevys made. It was #12 IIRC with engine #7, which was a 265 2-bbl. I initially was looking at the engine, and suddenly I was shocked at the number. It was a 4-door sedan, sitting in a forest. I tried and tried to get somebody interested, but back then, "It's a 4-door." I can't remember the color. And of course, you spend $50K to restore it, only to hear about somebody with #11. It wasn't in deplorable shape, but it was borderline even back then. There is actually a very early Nomad, I think with a lower serial number, but #12 that I found was made on the East Coast, so technically in absolute time before the Nomad. Also, I don't know that the Nomad had its original engine. I had also heard about the 50 Millionth Chevy, essentially the same story, the guy was ever so slowly restoring it. I thought he had the bumpers gold plated even when I was involved with the Chevys, about 30 years ago. I guess nobody knows where that car is now, which is unfortunate.

Over the top, '50s style. Is it wrong to picture this car with a straight axle, radiused rear wheel openings, and stacks through the hood with lettering on the side, "The Golden Gasser"? Yeah, probably wrong, but I can't shake it off.

The team who built the Tribute car did extensive research on the history of this car. Here's the full story. There were three (3) 2-door sport coupes initially built. The first two were used in promotional work by GM to create a buzz on the pending event before the actual 50 millionth car rolled off the assembly line. The third car in this group was the 50 millionth GM car with all the bright work gold plated. Subsequently GM built a number of 4-door sedans to capitalize off of the notoriety of the 50th millionth gold-plated car. Several of these 4-door are still around occasionally show up at classic car events. @@eclassicautos5101 I had read an article before I saw this video that said this build began with those. My father was a collector and I can remember projects being started by a small conversation. Contrary to popular belief, the 265ci small block from 1955 is not Chevy's first V8. That honor goes to the Series D, built between 1917 and 1919, although I believe all were sold as a 1918 model year. It had a 3.375 inch bore, 4 inch stroke, 180 degree crankshaft, and was rated at 60 horsepower.

GM did not use a standard paint for the Gold Chevy. It was a special mix which was not assigned a code. The Tribute car was painted a gold color to closely match photos taken at the time the original 50 Millionth car.

I guess this car is in its golden years. There’s a lot of things I haven’t heard of but this is top of the list for today. Where has this car been for 68 years and what are your plans for it, besides buying a box of gloves so as not to leave prints. Don’t know condition of it when you guys got it but looks like you did NO.1 job of bringing it back to its original condition.

The gold must be twice the cost of chroming, just wondering. What's the paint code or what would be very close? I'd like to make a model of this one. Just have to figure out how to make the chrome gold on the model.

👍
i've always been a chevy guy and have heard about this car but i figured it was a myth. i just can't believe GM had made 50 million cars ever, that seems like an unreal number even now. it's a beauty.
They only made 21 million VW Bugs to put that into perspective and they built those in Mexico until 2006!
Lovely. It was built at Flint assembly.
Ford Model T made 15,000,000 by itself..

I just did some quick math in my head and if each of the five divisions sold 400,000 cars per year, it would only take 25 years to get to 50 million. So it is doable. For example, the 1977 Olds Cutlass Supreme sold 750,000 cars in one year alone, and that’s just one model.
GM should be proud of the work your team has put into this , buttt
Beautiful! As a 5th Gen Bel Air owner I love it. Great work and thanks for keeping History alive and telling its story.

Sure does make a guy really scratch his head wondering where the original may have gone and why GM didn't hold on to it.
What an absolutely beautiful recreation.
The original was in a shop fire and then cut to pieces. There were 3 50 millionth cars but i believe that was the true car.
Very nice job on the build. It looks just like a car I would expect to represent the 50 millionth GM Built.
A goĺd plated car what a waste of some Gold.

Wow! I had always wondered where this car went! Great coverage of all of the unique qualities of the early production '55! Beautiful car!
This isn't the original car, it's totally new . Built with all new sheet metal and NOS parts.
I'll pass on your comment to the builders at Snodgrass Chevy Restoration. I know they will appreciate your feedback.
My dad and mom's first brand new car was a 1955 Chevy. I was 6 years old when they got it, and it's still one of my favorites

Absolutely outstanding workmanship and a most beautiful restoration. I hope I am able to see this amazing car in person someday!

👍
I understand the actual milestone `55 Chevy was repainted black/white and gold switched for chrome trim and it was re-sold to some GM exec. after the parades were over. Unfortunately, it's been lost to time and nobody knows what became of it. My guess it it was eventually scrapped like any old car.

That 1st 1967 Camaro that was recently found was painted gold too.

How do you sit and take a walk at the same time?
I had heard they built a few of those, but they were 4 doors with 6 cylinder engines?
The team who built the Tribute car did extensive research on the history of this car. Here's the full story.
There were three (3) 2-door sport coupes initially built. The first two were used in promotional work by GM to create a buzz on the pending event before the actual 50 millionth car rolled off the assembly line. The third car in this group was the 50 millionth GM car with all the bright work gold plated. Subsequently GM built a number of 4-door sedans to capitalize off of the notoriety of the 50th millionth gold-plated car. Several of these 4-door are still around occasionally show up at classic car events.

The money and time that went into this has to be the most expensive build I’ve ever seen started by something so small! Just coincidence that I happened along and saw this.

I pulled the heater box out of my 1955 Nomad and it had 3-55 ink stamped on the back. I’m thinking that makes it a mid (or late?) production car.

She’s a beauty but can I add that the air cleaner was black ? I just watched a video while they was actually building this car at the plant
Any idea of the total weight of the gold used in the plating?
Same question I was thinking

what is the paint code for the gold paint
GM did not use a standard paint for the Gold Chevy. It was a special mix which was not assigned a code. The Tribute car was painted a gold color to closely match photos taken at the time the original 50 Millionth car.
That 55 is so very beautiful. Was this the actual gold car or is this a tribute? Either way very beautiful.

Awesome
👍
You would think that the 50 Millionth 55 chevy would have a Radio
Yeah but GM must have gone over their budget with the trim plating cost😎
Yeah, a radio that only plays Golden Oldies lol!
Good one! lol@@1208bug

Nice car! I had a 55 Belair hardtop a few years ago. I have always been a Chevy guy but I never heard of this one and all my family, granddad, uncles and my father worked and retired from GM in Flint, Michigan. I know you did a tribute but do you know what happened to gm’s car? Thanks

Being a special car, it should have came with a four barrel!!! A power pack 265 😊
Wow. This car must be worth at least $3500.

I wonder if any of it is plated 24k Gold?
Yes, over 300 items including the bumpers, hubcaps, trim on outside and inside, and even screws that would normally be chrome.
I have the book from GM with this car on it.
WOW !!!

Cool. Steve blades is my cousin. He’s a tri five encyclopedia.
Great, I plan to give Steve a call.
Nice build. Wasn't the original GM 50m car paint made with real gold?

The gold must be twice the cost of chroming, just wondering. What's the paint code or what would be very close? I'd like to make a model of this one. Just have to figure out how to make the chrome gold on the model.
Please contact Dave Snodgrass who can provide information on the gold-colored paint used on the tribute build. Shop: 321-752-9039
Thx, Bob@eClassicAutos
@@eclassicautos5101Thanks, I will.
Gold foil.
@@lylejohnston4125I have used BMF but if there's any wrinkles or cracks in it, it won't come off in a nice piece, it just tears. I gave up using any BMF because of that. Even the sheets bought from a store were full of cracks and wrinkles.
