    "The ashtrays are full.., time to sell it" - ha! Love that line.
    Also love the fact that this restomod doesn't insult the lines of the original car. And I havta respect this guy's reasoning for thinking the car would feel purer being a column change, this is just ace all 'round.

    the 55 chevy is one of my dream cars. I always loved the black 55 in the movie American graffiti. I used to watch that movie alot as a kid. a few years ago I fell in love with the movie two lane blacktop and the 55 in that movie and later I found out that was the exact same car used in American graffiti. unbelievable lol.

    The 1936 Delahaye coupe nicknamed "Whatthehaye" uses a Viper V10, however Boyd's last build, a 1938 Delahaye convertible called "The French Connection" has a 12.8l BPM V12 in it. If anyone was wondering.

      a big part of an automobile in making it original is the tires. Firestones or General tire I forgot which was the stock choice in 1955. I wish he would have used the original rims and tires (not original tires, that would be very difficult to keep well without constantly surveillance and adjustment since 1955, its the early life that saves the later life).

      I don't think the owner quite freaked out, but his touching the throttle was obviously a big deal. As if Jay couldn't afford to fix the guy's car after breaking it for him, haha. I think the expression would be "More show than go".

    • @rare6499
      @rare6499 7 лет назад +13

      Nick Turner this was shot in California I believe, and the speed limit of a two lane highway is 55mph. Now I trust that Mr Leno kept to the speed limits (ahem) but since he gave it a little throttle and the chap then said thats the fastest anyone's ever taken it in four years, I'm assuming it's 50 ODD MPH, odd being the main word. Either way, clearly this is not a guy that drives this thing very hard. And since that's the case, my initial point remains the same. Around 600hp and he barely gives it any throttle in 4 years. Hence...the numbers don't add up. You with me still?

    Leave it at Jay's shop and let real mechanic's fine tune the thing. They could move the shiftier to the column or replace it with a proper 6 speed. And of course take care of the fuel and electrical problems.
    The teacher was talking numbers, Jay was talking car.

    This is identical to my 55 which I owned from 1962 to 1967 which was an all original 265 V8. I did shave the hood and trunk and had the interior door panels redone in rolled and tuck vinyl, with all new carpeting. Sold it after basic training in 1967, when I was ready to deploy to Germany. The guy I sold it to changed the engine out to a 350 and latter totaled it.

    This gentleman is not a real car guy, a real car guy would stomp the throttle of his hot rod in any stretch of road with a big smile on his face. This guy was clearly so nervous while Jay was driving!. Needless to say, he made an amazing job.

      The reason he doesn't drive hard is because getting replacement parts for that V12 is going to be extremely expensive since it's uncommon. He's not super wealthy.

      As a math teacher, he was probably calculating the exponential increase in stopping distance per increment in speed, hence his nervousness. Math and physics can take the fun out of driving for sure.

    Double Pumper Holleys don't work well on Street Driven Cars, especially when your lugging around in Stop and Go Traffic. That's the reason GM/Chevy engineers used Vacuum Secondary Holleys on most of the mid 60's early 70's SB & BB high performance engines. The 3310-1 base type vacuum secondary 780cfm 4 barrel has been on everything from the 302 Z28 all the way up to the 454ci/450hp LS6 Chevelle. Vacuum secondary Holleys are very forgiving on Jetting; all you have to do is have the right Power Valve in the Primary Side and they work great. If he wanted to stay with 600cfm Hollys, he should use the 2818 model and that Big engine would run a lot better and smoother, plus he would get a little better mileage not shooting 4 shots of fuel through the noozles every time he stepped on the Gas Pedal. Double Pumper Holley Carbs were intended for competition use but every High School Hotrodder thinks he needs a Double Pumper because that's what engines like the L88 had...

    looks like somebody stole my idea for using the door handle in the stock place. but it opens backwards.if my memory severs me right Gary also built a 55 back in the late 70,s i think. it was kinda a pro-street before pro-street was a thing. it was black and very cool. imo not much of a chevy fan, but the 55 is one of the best looking cars that G.M. ever made.

    I'm find it had to believe you people don't know who Gary Kollofski is ! I used to go to Minnesota Dragway in the late 60's and 70's and every weekend there was Gary in his first 55 Chevy gasser .( Hot Rod Magazine cover December 77 and Top 100 of all time) First known tubbed and pro streeted 55 on the planet . Later coming was his 36 Willys twin turbo coupe. ( Hot Rod cover July 79) He's put timeless hours and engineering into all his cars. Always setting high standards. Check out Gary Kollofski Google images. W24 57 Chevy coming! Nice running into you.Glad you're still around. Tom

      getting parts for that v12 is going to be expensive and these cars are mean't to be cruisers not sports cars. V12s are used in cruiser cars like bentley and rolls royce because they're extremely balanced and smooth perfect for cruising.
