but you have to admit, the keepers come third. only 5$ when you buy a brick, marked on 4 places and they handle better than any other marked deck out there. right?

  • @justincase116

Eh, not a great review honestly. You didn't really talk about what makes them "the best marked cards of all time," other than they look like Bicycle cards, which is obvious on its face. So I'm left making assumptions based of other reviews you've done, where you DID name properties, like how hidden the marks are, readability for older folks, etc.

I just picked up the Marksman Deck and I'm simply blown away at all the stuff that you can do with it. Luke Jermay deserves a lot of credit for releasing this gem. The instructional video is very enlightening and I was working with the deck a day-and-a-half after I got it. Highly recommended.

Once I knew to look for them, I could see the markings… but I can see how, onstage or somehow in the spotlight (in a crowd gathered on the street with all eyes on them, for ex.), with a magician talking at them and putting things in their hands and directing their attention this way and that, during a five-minute long trick, a volunteer would never notice the markings - not in a million years! 🙂 I wouldn’t use these to play poker with seasoned pros, though…!! 😮

The Penguin Maiden Back marked deck now comes in the blue back. I have two of them. Furthermore, the deck comes with matched jokers and two gaff cards: a blank card and a doubled blue back card. Easy to read marks. If you have seen the review this guy does on the 10 marked decks that he likes, you know that he separates marked decks into "coded" and "reader" style marks. The Maiden Back is a reader style deck.

@@magicorthodoxy I have a Dekram Deck, for me it's the best marked deck ever. A handful of times over the years, someone will take a card and closely inspect it thinking that it's marked. Noone has ever spotted it. Why? They're eyes go to the corners of the card and not where the markings are. I agree that the AH was super easy to spot and i wonder if it's just b/c my eyes have been trained to see the markings. But i'm terrified to change cards in favor of the markings being located in the corners.

I have literally been sitting next to the spectator and was not caught out. He even asked if he could see "his" card so I casually said "Sure!" and handed it over - just that one, of course :) He stared at the back for a good while and said "Well, I can see it's not marked in any way..." and went on wondering what I might have done. He's an intelligent guy and has an eye for detail - but he didn't see it because *he didn't know it was there* !

I love a good marked/reader back. Use them all the time as a back-up as you suggest here. Often I preform with a marked deck, then do a switch out for a regular deck and hand it to them for inspection after and say they can keep it. Cheers and thanks again. Actually, the most affordable option out there is David Blaine's Black Lions Seconds, at 5.00 USD per piece and 55 USD per brick, plus it comes with a few gimmicks in the faces of the cards. However, Blaine never advertised his Lions as marked decks nor it came with instructions, so only a handful of people knows how to read the Lions' mark (both the suit and value; I've seen some people says it's half marked). With the Marked Cards it is easier to do all the mentalism routines in my opinion.
But I shall also add if one already has a handful mem-deck routines, a stack is more useful than the mark; the mark is there if one messes up.

I will certainly be looking for those online myself. Do you have the Bicycle Blue Inspire Marked Deck by The Blue Crown? I picked up like a brick of these back when they were on sale on Amazon, 2 Decks for $9.95, which are hands down the cheapest marked deck I've ever come across. I just checked and they are currently unavailable on Amazon, but I'm sure that someone out there must have them. They aren't the Traditional Bicycle Back Design, but coming out of the Bicycle Box with the ever-reliable USPCC Printing, Duplicate Jokers, and Double Backer, these are worth seeking out, in my opinion at least. On a Blue Background with a double border, there are two Bicycles with the wording "Follow Your Dreams" Atop and inverted at the bottom of the card in White, and if you can tell time, you can easily make out this hard to see marking system, let's just say I'll leave it at that.

I have the Marksman deck and would only use it in certain situations... too scary and I don't want to wear it out.
(Little tip for the Marksman deck... I replace the 4C on top of the deck with a 4C from a regular mandolin deck... thus hiding the marks as the full deck sits on a table in front of me while I'm talking etc.)
Hands down the most invisible (to the spectator) marked deck is D.B. Black Lions. And for me quite easy to read. They could look at those cards for a year and never find them.

I know I’m late to the party, but I’m just going to leave this here.
This is for the people who think the Maiden Backs are obvious.
    They are.
And that’s the point of them.
These are now the only cards I use.
In a year and a half of using them, I’ve been caught only twice, and that’s because I did stupid effects where it was OBVIOUSLY a marked deck.
The thing is, if they want to inspect the back, they are going to find the marks.
But you have to make them assume that they aren’t marked.
Jon Armstrong’s video with the deck goes over a lot on how to not use it like they think a marked deck would be used.
    I highly recommend this deck.

I think the Maiden deck is horrible. I don't care if it's cheap in price, only if you are crazy to buy a brick. But man, do you really need markings in SIX places? They're so easily spotted. Isn't that defeat the purpose of a marked deck?

    • @magicorthodoxy
      @magicorthodoxy  5 лет назад +1

Yes easily spotted by someone who knows they are there but a person who is skilled with a marked deck will know how to use them effectively. Luke Jermays deck has more marks than that. Anything good enough for Luke is good enough for me

I'd agree with you to an extent, that they're the best BICYCLE decks on the planet. For all the reasons you mentioned. But absolute best marked decks on the planet (irrespective of Bicycle design or not), no chance. Till date I've never seen a better marking system than the one used by the Sharps deck (by Legends), as it's the only marking system (that I know of, anyway) that can pass the dreaded riffle test. Furthermore, you can read the markings from across a table. You'd need binoculars or something to manage to do that with these bicycle decks 😆

they are both obvious, but only for magicians and people who are looking. Most lay people are concerned with the faces and hiding the face from you - then they are about the backs - if you treat the deck like a normal deck - so will they

As long as you have an opinion about a topic (which you're bound to even subconsciously as long as you're aware of that topic) you can't be unbiased. You will always feel one way or the other. And since the title is "the best marked cards" clearly the viewer is aware of my bias before they even begin watching. LOL

We watch David’s reviews because we WANT his opinions. It would be a waste of our time if he simply said, “Meh! I dunno ...”. Personally, I don’t get the opinion that David is being paid to “sell” these products. If he is, then he’s very good at it, because I have purchased magic based on his reviews, and others’.
