I had an entire comment written and had to take a call and came back to finish it up and it was gone. What The Heck? Anywho, I agree with you David on this one. When Glancing at the markings on the deck you don’t want to stand there there gazing at the cards like a dope trying to decipher the marks. Aside from the two easiest reader decks I have, The Bicycle Maiden Reader Backs and the DMC Elites is have to also include the Ellusionist 1800’s. With my eyes getting progressively worse I’ve the years it’s been hard to find a reader back that I can make out without it being blatantly obvious to the spectator that I’m using a marked or reader back deck. Another Stellar Review David. Kudos.
Yes I agree; not a very good marked deck. I got this trick but its going in the "magic not used" box. I personally like the "ultimate Read the Backs Stripped Cards - Bicycle Special Deck." It is a esay read the backs (good for psychic tricks) in addition, I can always produce the spectator's choosen card.
Your eyes aren’t “bouncing around the card” they’re not darting around the cards left and right, they’re moving top to bottom and are conveniently put in CHaSeD sequance. . It’s pretty simple and deceptively effective.
Reader, marked gaffe...same same. Readers need to be deciphered and take longer to read. Marked has fewer signs to read, faster, easier. Gaffe - the same as the other two...id est a prepared deck. Whether stacked or stripped or whatever.
I get this Boris Wild Marked Deck since 1985 and still using it, is in fair good condition. Soon I buy a new one. But THIS IS THE BEST MARKED DECK ON THE PLANET!! We can do a lot tricks with this deck. The secret is easy to learn and read... and I greet with you NO revealing the secret.
I own the deck and agree with you. Also, the numbers are difficult to distinguish, especially 6, 8, 9 and 0. Reflection helps a bit. Also, mine are Rider Backs. I got them from Hocus-Pocus in May, when I purchased the Quiver Change Purse (which you reviewed.) They were marked "Private Estate," so probably were in limited supply. $29.95 per deck for red and blue. The Quiver, which is fun was $39.
$30 ??? OH wow, I'd rather get the marked deck from Penguin! $10 and you get 2 download videos from Jon Armstrong and Rick Lax www.penguinmagic.com/p/8474
I agree, after the fact. I went to Hocus-Pocus for Quiver and spotted Boris. The price, I'm sure, is because they were true Rider Backs, no longer available.
I own a Boris Wild deck and I completely agree you. It doesn't feel very practical, and I really hate the marks for the high cards. One deck I would consider using is the GT Speedreader, but then I'm a bit of a fan of the creator. Would you consider reviewing it?
I just watched your review, because I need a Reader Deck for an ACAAN effect. This effect requires to find the card named by the spectator as quickly as possible. The advantage of the Boris Wild deck in this case is that you don't have to look at all the cards, but only 13 if you know where to look. On the other hand, I'm not really happy with the way the cards are marked, because I think it's too easy for the spectator to see, and still requires some thinking from the magician for some card values. So my current preferred idea is to buy a GT Speedreader Deck or an Ultimate Marked Deck and add a mark for the suit a la Boris Wild myself. What do you think about this?
@@muhammadahmedsadiq2849 I have not done it yet. But my basic idea is to add a little dot or scratch for each color in different spaces. For example: a scratch in the upper part of the edge of every card for aces, a scratch in the middle part of the edge for spades, one in the lower part for diamonds and no scratch at all for clubs. So if you are searching for e.g. the Queen of Diamonds, you don´t have to read every card but only the cards with a scratch in the lower part, which is much faster.
@@Musikpunx yes I kinda tried it on the double faced card so I don't ruin the cards, the problem is that the spots on the deck aren't really yk really prominent ig, and I still haven't found a good blue pen which perfectly matched the cards
I like the extra reminder cards in the deck and the industry standard look. I agree with your comment that these are READER cards. I like your reviews Mr Magicorthodoxy.
Hi David I am would like to buy the Marked deck and the Pure telephaty deck too. Does the Pure telephaty use marked cards? I dont want to buy 2 of the same decks. Thanks, Richard
Pure Telepathy is in mnemonica stack, with a brand new style of markings. You don't have to scan the back of every card to get a reading. The chose card can been seen at a quick glance. Probably 3 seconds max. BUT - if I were you - I'd look at THE CODE from Andy Nyman
I really appreciate that you keep the markings a secret in your reviews. I bought almost all the decks you added in your top 10 marked deck Video just to find out what the marking is. Glad I did because the really are great marked decks!
magicorthodoxy agreed. Even if the original designer or someone else who is related to the deck reveals the markings or trick it's not cool. Yes it's their deck they can decide what to do with it, but it does take the magic away. And that is why I watch your reviews! You cover all the important information but keep the magic alive :)
it seems that this deck is more fo finding a specific card in a spread, so you'd know exactly where to look already, making this lightning-fast. I would agree though that this deck isn't the best for deciphering the identity of a card. Nice review.
I've learned something new today. Now I know what a rider back & marked back decks are now. Interesting. I know the secret to these marks, they never appealed to me. I've got the Ted Lesley ones.
The Boris wild`s marked deck phoenix version was released, and I think the same mechanism with the Boris wild`s marked deck bicycle version. I thought, the marking is hidden in more naturally, but it still not to know quickly about the marking. But I heard the Boris wild marking system is more efficient on some routine. So, That is the reason Why the Boris Wild Marking still maintains the system. But it might be not quick to know the markings. you know haha.
Seems to me that the argument against "You can learn to read the system quickly" is "Sure, I can, but there are numerous decks out there where I don't have to learn anything." BTW, I have a pair of those Penguin decks. Bought them as soon as they came out in blue. Great deck! I love using them and haven't gotten caught yet.
magicorthodoxy Funny you should mention those. Just last week, my local magick shoppe owner was telling me about Marksman. I was duly impressed--and not just by versatile they are--but also by the price tag. $35. That's fine if you're a professional, but a bit steep for a dabbler like me who rarely gets to perform.
The butterfly deck is the best marked deck you can see where a specific card is even if is in the middle of the deck, and you can see which card is missing in a matter of seconds plus you can learn all in like 10 min
It depends what you're gonna use the deck for. A lot of the marked effects Boris has released rely on finding a named card from a table or in the hands spread quickly. For that purpose, this deck would be faster as you then only need to look at the marks for the named suit. I am with you in that if you're just wanting to determine the identity of a selected card and get in and out quickly, a different system where the marks are in a set place would be faster. Right tools for the right jobs
I disagree with two complaints in this review. If you see a "1" there's simply no confusion between one and jack because you either do or don't see the "little flag" next to it (denoting an extra one for the tens place); that first "1" would otherwise be invisible without the flag. No little flag in the margin next to a number means A, 2, 3. Second, the different location is a great feature for finding a named card in a ribbon spread with a tiny sliver of the back showing. With all the markings in the same place, you'd have to look at all 52 cards in the same location but the BW deck allows you to quickly locate their card by looking at only 13 locations. Are you wrong with your review? No, not really. But you are "not wrong" for flawed reasons. And there's no zig-zag hunt as your wagging finger suggests. The locations are in a straight line. (And the "how everybody does it" comment ignores that many marked decks use X for ten.) So is the BW deck my very favorite? Not sure yet, but I like it more than you did.
I’m confused. I bought a bicycle marked deck that has the rider back 808 called the “ultimate marked deck” of amazon. Is this a well known back? It’s the same back as the bicycles we all know and love. I didn’t know there was legal issues with this.
magicorthodoxy no wonder I payed 40 dollars for mine. Thanks for the info. I’ll make sure to take good care of it cause I really like all my trick decks to have he same back
The fact that the markings are on 4 separate places has at least one advantage : it is far easier and faster to locate a specific card while looking at the backs. So, it is certainly not the best marked deck for some tricks, but this system is very well suited for others.
Agreed and might be a good deck for say finding the 4 aces in a spread. But if I just casually fan the cards and have one selected and returned - I know I would have a hard time reading it that quickly.
With a fan spread, you an only spot marking for 2 suits. Really only good for tricks where you can see the full side of the card. You can read the right, but it is upside down. Used to love the Rider Backs that you could read the flowers.
I am annoyed at your response that "if you want to know the secret, you should by the trick." This isnt about wanting to know a secret, the secret is that the deck is marked. It's about knowing if the thing is something I can use. If the markings are visible enough for me to invest in. I think as a reviewer you should be able to talk about this and show one example. I dont even believe Boris Wild would actually think this is "exposure" but a demonstration of the product. I understand that magicians dont want exposure in public youtube videos but I honestly dont think in this instance that not showing how the marking appear is going to help anyone looking for a magic trick to be exposed. At the least it will help aid magicians in knowing if this marked deck is for them. How is it any different from you linking how to read the marks of a david blaine deck in the info on your youtube review of his black lions deck? I love your channel but respectfully, this stance on marked decks is stupid.
Perhaps, but then if that were the case, retailers would show you the markings when you go to their product page. Ethically I don't always want to give away more of the "secret" than the magic stores. I value your opinion - great comment !!!
I think your wrong in my opinion if you practice with this mark deck u can actually do it a lot faster than a normal marked deck u just need to practise or buy the dvd boris wild put out with international magic years ago watching that DV’d I think you will change your mind
Okay, thank you for your time and reviews. Money is kinda hard to come by when your 12, and you've helped me save a bunch of money and become more confident when purchasing things you've reviewed.
Wth magic orthodoxy the reason I got into magic is because I watched magic totorials on RUclips I think that really made me angry I reveal tricks on my channel to and if no one reveals any tricks then the art form will die out!
