Killing crew members costs xp. The reason Schultze is stuck on low fighting experience is that he's being killed/cloned at a rate that mostly eclipses his combat xp gain. I'm not saying it's *never* beneficial to intentionally kill a crew member to clone it for healing, it's just not something you should make a habit of *always* doing.
I disagree with his "worth it to do it whenever you can" analysis. They lose 20% of an xp bar, which means that it's definitely worth it when health is low and you're concerned about surviving the next jump, but it's definitely *not* worth it in any given circumstance.
@@benjamineneman4276 Yeah, I've won runs where I've had a clone bay and 8 crew and I had all my crew at low health from spreading out the damage between all off them. I had rocks as damage absorbers and quickly got the cloning bay to level 3. Crew rarely if at all had to be cloned. But that was a very lucky run. On other runs I get a healing burst. On one run I got 2 of them both from the zoltan eye event. I think the engi -25 scrap event can also give you a healing burst. (but sometimes nothing)
Just clicked off the previous video and thought I was heading to the second part of this series. It was actually and older series and I was confused. Quick trip to your channel and look and behold, the actual part 2, 7 minutes ago. Perfect timing: clearly I was meant to watch this instead of doing physics revision :)
That first fight was one of the biggest shithows I've seen in a long time. Thanks, Jon, your perception never fails to amuse, despite it itself constantly failing
Jon, in the immortal words of Arthur, king of the britons, "you make me sad." The big advantage of your setup is that you can send 0 and 1 to destroy and camp the enemy ships' O2 room. This is on top of your mind control (that you rarely use) and flak that you can use to further disrupt their crews and offensive capabilities while you wait out their suffocation.
I’m so glad you played this again - I’m late to this episode because I after your first I got back into the game, finally beat the Flagship, and unlocked three new ships. Feelsgoodman. Note - double halberd + flak + hacking makes for a damn good time.
*Barely uses his weaponry* *Mentions he needs to get more shields* *Decides it's more important to maintain a fully operational weapon bank that he'll rarely use than to get more shields* I'm beginning to think that Jon shouldn't play boarding ships. They make him go really stupid.
John you dont have to power the clone bay past one level. You get the better healing each jump whether it’s powered or not. The only thing more power does is lower the respawn time.
so I finally bought this because of you. why I haven't watched this series completly yet I've been busy playing. so far have 6 hours on it ad haven't even make it to the 5th sector hopefully I'll win sometime
Jon, before jumping you should power your clone bay as much as you can so that your crew heals alot, also killing your crew on purpose isn't always the best choice because they loose quite a lot of experience
Why does everyone hate nebulas? The slowing-down of the fleet is sooo powerful. It's two for the price of one, the fleet being the time limit of the game
Only Jon hates nebulas, mostly cuz he's kinda an idiot in general? But the nebula is specifically kinda bad for THIS run, since he's running a boarding party, so not being able to see is a hindrance. Not that its actually a significantly large enough hindrance to justify not going for the nebula, since its effectively easy resources. But like I said, Jon's an idiot in general.
Oh dear god Jon why. This ship syncs well with a defense drone so you can take your time killing the crew. The amount you’ve spent on repairs so far would’ve paid for drone control. And dodge. You enter sector 5 on hard mode with 10 dodge and unmanned engines. Minutes earlier stating “why am I taking so much damage”. Then proceed to buy a fire beam. Oh god oh god why.
Gilhelmi this ship is probably the best in the game. On hard I win at least 75% of the time with it. It’s my fav ship so I have lots of experience with it and I just wanna scream at my screen watching this
I don’t get why Jon hates the nebulas so much. Yeah sensors are off during them, but it slows pursuit in them, as such, you can do more stuff in them no?
I understand it's hard to focus when so much is going on, but am I right in believing the first fight could have been made significantly easier if you focused on the drone bay to take out their repair/anti personnel drones, then taken out weapons the rest of the crew while just making sure they can't repair the drone bay? I have 94 hours in FTL that was just my first thought.
I find it quite interesting how many different tactics there are for FTL. You have, just off the top of my head: The Cloning Boarders (What Jon is doing) The Beamer (Use beam weapons to slice the enemy ship into pieces) The Stunlocker (Use hacking and Ion to cripple the enemy ship, permanently stunlocking their ability to fight back) The Defiant (Strap big guns to the front of your ship and run at your enemy yelling "Today is a good day to die!" before opening up with the firepower) The Pyromancer (Light fires everywhere and swamp the enemy crew in cleansing flame) The Hallucinator (Mind control crew in critical rooms to seriously hamper the enemy in their ability to fight) The North Korea (Fire missiles at everything) The Emperors Light is my torch (Yell Warhammer references at your screen as you purge the filthy heretics with all manner of firepower. Personally my favourite.) So, just from the top of my head, 8 ship tactics, of which a lot work with each other quite well. So, for example a Pyromancer/Cloning Boarders using Rocks would work great due to the Rocks immunity to fire. Or using the Stunlocker/Defiant, so you use hacking to remove the shields, Ion to disable enemy weaponry, and then fire giant gins at the enemy.
I have a friend who is crazy about Warhammer, and thanks to him I now can't be attacked by an alien ship without yelling either "Better just lay the Exterminatus upon these heretics, *weapons charged* ALRIGHT FIRE!" or, if I have flame weaponry, "THE EMPERORS LIGHT IS MY TORCH" and proceed to shine the torch of Flamy goodness upon them. Good times.
They smell too good when toasted for me to be able to get along with them. If I had to choose between waking to the smell of chargrilled Xeno, or not, chargrilled is just too good.
Fireflux Finally someone who I can agree with everyone called me crazy for liking the smell of burnt heretics and Xenos scum but now I know I am not alone
I was just about to play FNV, but first Jon uploaded Stellaris so I didn't. Then I was going to play it now, but then Jon uploaded this. I am beginning to think Jon doesn't want me to play FNV today at all.
Can't you leave the lanius off on the enemy ship and destroy it to kill them and get them back to full health for free? Only on ships you're destroying obviously.
lol...... Life Aboard Jon's Ship Thou shalt not discuss ethics of murdering crew to clone them to heal less that clone has lower skills digging the multiple approaches to fights! what made you switch to flak cannons? was just watching your earlier vids, you said it was horrible.

Sigh Jon, if you're reading this you need to listen very carefully. I might not have as much time as you in the game, but I know enough to point out everything you can do better. So I'm going to give you some advice, and I expect you to remember it. 1) Lets start with combat. You had a pretty good ship before you got the fire beam. But you method of fighting was horrible. Here is how to use your ship properly 1a) Wait until your mine is charged before doing anything. Once your mine is charge, mind control the pilot 1b) While the pilot is gone, target piloting with your mine and send your crew to door control or piloting (once the mine exploded). 1c) After firing your mine, fire your flak at weapons if the ship can do hull damage 1d) *Wait until your flak hits the shield* (it's unforgivable that I have to explain this). The moment the shield is down, fire your burst laser at the weapons. Strong/hull lasers would come after your weak lasers hit the shield. 1e) Once the weapons are no longer a threat, focus on the medbay followed by shields. 1.2) Against an automated ship, send your crew to piloting and target what can deal damage before targetting the shields/cloaking. 2) Once you have 6 shots and shield penetration, *upgrading systems takes priority over getting new weapons.* You should not have bought that fire beam 2a) Also, the pike beam is a slow piece of shit that is only useful without a teleporter. *Do not buy it unless you need to deal quick damage.* 3) I only learned this last week so I don't blame you for not knowing this one. Do not consider reactor power when upgrading a system. You can always redirect power when needed, including from oxygen. Don't bother with the reactor until you have scrap to spare or are already behind in reactor power from your last upgrade. 3b) Also, only worry about how much power a weapon takes if you flat out can't power it. You rarely see a weapon twice so it's better to have to shut down other weapons than it is to pass it up completely. I really hope that this advice helps you play the game somewhat competently. But even if it doesn't, at least others can learn from it.
I quite like the fire beam. The enemy has to stop what they are doing to put out the fires, and they have to extinguish a room before repairing it. They can't deal with a ship flooded with fire. Also, I'm a bit sadistic when it comes to games. I find a slow, inevitable death to be funny.
Yes, it's not the best but it is fun. Besides, Jon has a Lanius that can survive on the drone ship and a clone bay so he could still do it even if the would die.
One the thing (maybe the only thing) I have against FTL is sometimes (maybe sometimes too often) the RNG is utter bullshit. Like where Jon's bombs kept missing while theirs kept hitting. I will say that sometimes (veeery few) RNG works great in your favor, so I will give it that.
That's not pure RNG - you can absolutely impact your own change to evade through engine upgrades, and their chance to evade by targeting their engines or helm.
Many A True Nerd I still feel it tends to balance more in the enemies favor though because I've upgraded evade and high piloting and even paired with cloaking and I honestly didn't feel like it improved all that much (not enough to warrant the cost of upgrades and stuff anyway). Maybe I'm just that bad of a player though XD
I hate boarding ships and this video perfectly demonstrates why. Bad luck with damage to the clone bay kills crew members which is too risky, you tend to focus on their ship too much and you end up neglecting your ship which gets more holes than John Marston while you ain't watching and if your teleporter gets knocked out then farewell sweet princes. It's far too risky for my tastes.
Lance Uppercut clone bay does have a grace period yes, no idea if that is extended with more levels but there is an item that stores crew even if power is down but I personally dislike clone bay because I don't play boarding style so my crew is vulnerable without good healing and cloning reduces skills everytime it's used.
Killing crew members costs xp. The reason Schultze is stuck on low fighting experience is that he's being killed/cloned at a rate that mostly eclipses his combat xp gain. Jon, the Clone Bay's jump-healing isn't based on how much power is put into the system, just that the system is at that level.

Oh dear god, when he pulls them off the ship so they dont die, then deliberatly kills the mantis and wonders why the lanius didnt die....
Jon, your perception never ceases to amaze.
Schultze: The Mantis that could die a lot
0: The Lanius that keeps not dying
I spent the whole video yelling at the screen, "use your damn mind control!"
"The Death of Schultze: A Life." a memoir by the universe's most miserable Mantis.
I don't normally yell at RUclips videos, but when I do it's when Jon is playing FTL apparently!

Well since I'm early I'm going to bet Zoltan shields are going to give Jon some problems.
Let's hope I'm not right.
Oliver Göransson you probably are right
Oliver Göransson I've played this before, they are a nightmare
it shouldn't be to bad he does have a flak cannon to quickly destroy the shield
Flak Cannons are the 2nd best weapon for destroying Zoltan shields. The only better weapon is the Ion 2, which costs 3 power.
You can destroy ships with your crew aboard as long as your clone bay is active, it’s a decent way to get guys with full health for the next encounter

really, one upgrade in doors and in piloting would be useful. Doors prevent wild running invadors and piloting can give a slight edge in evasion.
FTL is one of my favorite games. A+

exactly what I think, although nebula sectors are still bad, since the rebels are prepared so they don't slow down that much
sensors off during a boarding run is a terrible idea. Targeting the right rooms with your invaders (and bombs) is clutch
I hate nebulas because of ion storms. Unless you had the foresight to install a backup battery (Which I usually forget) they can be a bitch.
