There is a Tau Epic Hero model called Darkstrider that prevents deep strikes in a 12 inch radius from him! He's only 60 points and can lead a pathfinder team too!
Hey Jay, not sure if you'd be interested, but I have an extra copy of the Kroot hero from Blackstone Fortress. I can send it to your PO box if you have one.
to further the idea, you can add moss to the mechs to add to the camo aesthetic, but also to show how they sit motionless for long period of time before striking. I like that they don't deepstrike, they've been there the whole time waiting to power up and strike. Bet you could get some cool effects using a static flocking applicator, probably get more value by mossing up your bases as well to fit the theme too
11:34 "The problem with Kroot is that they all look exactly like this" Thats what makes them awesome. A normal box of Kroot Carnivores could easily be turned into 3 Trail shapers, 3 Flesh shapers, 3 War shapers and the last guy could be a themed proxy for a Darkstrider or Ethereal. Thats 600 points from a $45 box

@@wholesomecomment45 Im glad you asked, always happy to help. First, make sure the people you are playing with are ok with kitbashed models (i.e not official tournament grinders). Then its up to you how much effort you want to put into the conversions. You will likely have them attached to a group of carnivores, so making them stand out is important. Since all the Carnivores are nude, one simple way to differentiate the heros would be to use green stuff to model on some rags, the typical Kroot hoods, maybe some armour. Or you could just add some little bits like feathers in their hair, or anything other that shows status, like a banner or trophy rack. Or maybe for your group of Kroots, leadership is determined by color. So a yellow kroot is automatically a Flesh shaper, and a red kroot is a war shaper, and so on. Heck, even just giving them a fancy tactical rock to stand on can show that they are special. My point is that since all Kroot are similar its easy to substitute the cheaper ones for characters. Compare that to other faction like tyrranids where that isnt possible.
The good thing about painting Kroot is that the infantry is mostly skin and very few details, so if you lean heavy on contrast paint for the skin you can do them in no time. I did a mix of 86 Kroot models in less then a week only painting in the evenings.
You should 100% play a crusade. Competitive is for sweaty gameplay and meta list building. Crusade allows you to play suboptimal units because they "can" get busted. It also gives the smaller leaders a real chance to shine. Having my terminator in sorcerer armor achieve demonhood and get replaced with a demon prince and keep all his buffs for my CSM crusade was the peak of 40k for me.
This! I'd love to see Jay do a narrative series with his Black Templars. He's got enough. They're incredibly well done. And he's got the creativity. A story based game, instead of a competitive one would really let him push those skills and let him switch things up. Dooo eeet Jay!!!
This. Jay, you're absolutely about the STORY in a 40k game, so you'd LOVE the long-form story of a Crusade. Naming guys and seeing their stories unfold over a number of games is a blast.
I joined the hobby with my high school BF a year ago, and I chose Tau, and quickly found a soft spot for the Kroot. I was over the moon with the army box release, and the inclusion of a Kroot detachment. Through some crazy amounts a finagling and discount staking, I was able to get 4 of the army boxes. Its a sea of grey right now, but I couldn't be happier. With the new mixed auxiliary detachment from Grotmas, I have a great spread of options for my two-eyed-non-flying-green-people-eaters!
They need to bring back the Great Knarlok to give the Kroot a tank like unit. I also feel that they should bring back the Knarlok Riders since they fill a different role than the Rampagers.
Im nearing 1.5k points of kroot and its the first army ive ever gotten even close to fully painted lol, Just something about the little chicken boys that keeps me going. Its great to see you join the Kin
20:28 that’s why I went from Salamanders to Guard, a lot more units that I can use to do actions or similar, whereas my salamanders would need to shoot and fight instead of an action, or would just die.
I love the Kroot! They were actually the models that caught me eye when considering 40k after a decade of WHFB... But my heart was torn out when I learned that they were not a stand alone army 😢. But here we are just 20 years later and my dream may be a reality!!! Thanks for sharing Jay!
Last year Kroot was my first 40k army ever, and I absolutely love them! This makes me so happy! I picked up the last of my models at the end of the year last year to run any sort of list I want to run. They're on the start of my 2025 project list. Here's to you, Jay!
Always send GW a message if you have a miscast or missing bit! I got an entire squad of Forgeworld Vorax because i was missing a single shin plate! I just asked for the bit but a whole squad showed up.
I had a kroot army back when i had to mail order metal gargoyle wings to make the flying kroot. Also had to mail order metal melta guns and metal power weapons to equip them out. They were my mirror "bad guy" force to my Catachans. Today i have Blood Angels vs Dark mech in my sisolay case. I think i still have those metal winged flying kroot around somewhere.
Really excited to see how the kroot turn out, just wanted to give a few pointers for the kroot and the T'au. Of course play them as you like but just wanted to make sure you're not feeling as if there is something missing. I would maybe substitute a unit or find some other points to have a stealth suit squad tag along. Even though you're playing kroot you still have access to the 'for the greater good' army rule. This is the whole guiding a unit onto a target with a spotter (diagram and explanation in the codex). And some units that particularly like to be guided are broadsides and crisis suits such as the sunforge (melta) variant. And if these stealth suits guide they give reroll 1's to hit and reroll 1's to wound. So lets say your stealth suits guide the broadside: +1 BS from being guided (but only onto the targeted unit). +1 to hit from heavy on the rail rifle reroll 1's to hit from the stealth suits having guided you. reroll 1's to wound from the stealth suits having guided you. All of this would apply to the sunforge suits aswell, except for the +1 to hit from heavy. And then, the sunforges have their own individual bonuses towards vehicles and monsters again. T'au and by extension kroot is an army that relies so much on having your army work together, this is one of the reasons that make it such an interesting army for me. For your ethereal, I wanted to ask, didn't you paint some ochre colored fire warriors once, they had some really pretty wrapping around their pulse rifles? I know you said you did not want to paint fire warriors, but they could pull double duty in your army, both to protect your ethereal and to hold your home objective and spread out to deny deepstrikers. Again, really excited to see how these turn out and thank you for your amazing videos.
The kroot are surprisingly quick to paint, they are ideal for slapchop, I've done 60 of them over a 3 week period and I didn't really feel rushed at all
Good luck with your kroot build! Watching your Skaven videos convinced me to join the clans this year. I’ll be sure to keep an eye out for your kroot videos to make sure I’m keeping pace with your new army. Maybe even keeping ahead of you! Happy hobbying & happy new year!

Trail shaper makes them better at move blocking. Deploy the unit in a line 9" from their deployment, and as soon as they move, you move the unit d6 forward to block them even more. Really does a number on some slow armies.
Excited to see the army come together!! I just built my 2 k list supplemented with a mix bag of Tau mechs. Its been a lot of fun, but sooo many little modifiers to track
I dont know how competitive you are looking to be with your Kroot, but I recommend some tau units for damage in your army. Skyrays are amazing because they are pretty self sufficient. Stealth suits are a staple of almost every tau list at the moment - Very nice to guide for broadsides and crisis suits. They also gave vespid the uppy downy rule, so a 5 man or 2 of vespid are very good rn. Also highly recommend the new Grotmas tau detachment If you need to zone out backfield - Darkstrider on his own does really well at that

for the kroot if you have a flesh shaper leading, all melee attacks get sustained hits, if you take the enhancement you crit on 5+. Even with the war shaper the unit does not get lethal hits and precision, but the war shaper itself can have lethal hits, precision and dev wounds + sustained if both take an enhancement. If you want to snipe a character with the kroot, I taking the ranged weapon wargear is better, with the enhancement it gets precision & dev wounds, but innately has anti-infantry, assault, heavy, d3+1 attacks, and 2 damage. Shame Great Knarloc is no longer part of the army, they would provide some nice boost to detachment, maybe remove need for T'au models, you should still get one and paint it for fun :D
You should definitely go read Peter Fehervari's excellent novella "Fire and Ice" for some Kroot action. Also, White Dwarf up to the 2010s was excellent. Now? Really poor.

Kroot is my second army next to my White Scars and it's so fun. I love the new Models and it's fun to paint in many different colours. Bring some Vespids into the army as well.
So in "Magic" there's a creature called a sliver. On its own, it isn't super great, but each one gives the others a stat bonus. Kroot seem sort of like that I guess.
when it comes to crisis suits, its very popular to magnetize the weapons so you can swap them out. Once you magnetize them its really satisfying being able to change weapons on the fly, the only downside is its a pain to prime and paint each individual weapon, but paint on primer or airbrushing primer helps a lot.
The krootox riders are better than you think. I run squads of 3. You gotta shoot and melee with them though. The melee is only a little worse than a rampager amd they can shoot twice per battle round if you position them right
Tau was my first army 15 years ago, and I loved kroot back then! unfortunately my late mom burned all my plastic "toys" in the stove when we didn't have any money for firewood (we used wood and coal for heating) 😢 I still have some oldschool broadsides and an ethereal and a kroot shaper made of metal tho 😇 15 years later I got into warhammer again and I'm into bugs now
Love the Kroot, even found some cool proxies that look like Tharks from the movie John Carter, which my son loves so he's going to be happy to see these on the board.
Genuinely, spontaneously, cheered out loud when you said Kroot. Really excited about seeing this year's new army! EDIT: excitement decreasing the more Tau units and suits get added...
9:30 I'm confused where the unit wide precision comes from. When looking them up, the enhancement for the War Shaper seems to only apply to that model.

Sat here painting minis, waiting for them to dry, go on RUclips and this video drops 💪
There's something really funny about Magnus being killed by the army that just straight up doesn't believe in magic
Kroot don't believe in magic? Thought that was a Tau thing
Good to see Kroot getting love.
Welcome to the pack jay! I hope your gonna do alot of kitbashing for us kroot lovers here:D
Tau was my first army 15 years ago, and I loved kroot back then! unfortunately my late mom burned all my plastic "toys" in the stove when we didn't have any money for firewood (we used wood and coal for heating) 😢 I still have some oldschool broadsides and an ethereal and a kroot shaper made of metal tho 😇 15 years later I got into warhammer again and I'm into bugs now
Love a Kroot/Tau army with Kroot! Hope you post how you go about painting the army!
Thanks for posting such great content and keeping the vibes positive! Can’t wait to watch these with my daughter one day soon.
Yes!! Kroot! Welcome to our small but mighty community
For me, I think this year my “new year, new army” will be trying to learn and play some Horus Heresy! I’m probably gonna play some Imperial Fists
Love the Kroot, even found some cool proxies that look like Tharks from the movie John Carter, which my son loves so he's going to be happy to see these on the board.
5 days ago this man organized his entire pile of shame by faction now he has another one
I bet he’s planning to paint the big orange kroot hound on his shelf as a riptide lol
I think he should grab that yellow Kroot Hound toy on his shelf and make it into a custom Lonespear
I wanna see ‘em!!! 😄😄😄 Lookin’ forward to seeing how the paint goes!
Kroot are definitely straight out of Oddworld Abe's Odyssey
The fact that Kroot are actually out in the bushes, going "CaCAAAW!" is everything.
I resisted the temptation to start a Kroot army... YOU ARE NOT HELPING!!! 🤬
Brother, I just finished your too many models video, you truly are living our dream, lol.
Genuinely, spontaneously, cheered out loud when you said Kroot. Really excited about seeing this year's new army!
EDIT: excitement decreasing the more Tau units and suits get added...
Now that you start s krootarmy can you finally paint the yellow kroot hound on your shelf ?
I'm so tempted to go back and count how many times he says "Kroot" in this video. I just don't have time, but I really want to.
9:30 I'm confused where the unit wide precision comes from. When looking them up, the enhancement for the War Shaper seems to only apply to that model.
I absolutely love the fact that your previous video right before this one was about organising the backlog and how to tackle it 😅😅
