Well that compressor is straight fire. It is so musical. I have an original LA-2A, and the search for a second has brought me to Audioscape. Wow. Hope I can somehow score one.
Josh this is awesome!! Thank you for using my music, but even more than that thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. i look forward to watching ALL your videos and learning from one of the best in the business!
Thanks brother! I really appreciate you letting me share your music here. I'm looking forward to working on many more of these types of videos together.
Blake Johnson thanks! It really does add this magic sheen that we’ve all heard on the records we love. The HF control has really been helpful on some vocals I’ve received to mix that are recorded on brighter mics.
Thanks, I appreciate that! The vocal tracking chain was a Korby KAT with 67m capsule into a Shadow Hills Quad Gama on the Iron setting followed by a Serpent Audio Splice MKII compressor.
I've listen to patrik rock album!! Is amazing!!! That voice, guitars, snare... the mix is powerfull, organiz and sweet!! Congrats, did you use Audioscape opto on the album final voice tracks mixings?? Thanks!!
I'm so glad you checked out the whole album! Patrick is an amazing artist and I'm happy to share his music here on the channel. Unfortunately, I did not have the AS Opto during the making of that album. It will definitely be used on everything moving forward though so I'll keep you posted on any new releases!
Thanks for sharing his music, is a gift for me... the song So close to me.... wow... Man even you haven't the opto on that album I have to say that vocals sound amazing. Good job!!! 🙌🙌🙌 Keep roking! I'll follow your next works and demos!!! Mikel
@@maik9938 "So Close to Me" is my favorite on the album as well! The Retro Sta Level was the main part of the vocal sound for that album. Love that compressor!
Great Review, thanks for doing this. I actually just bought one of their buss compressors, but haven't got a chance to dig into it yet. Ironically, I also got one of the Beesneez mics as well. I'm really liking it, and to my ears is an accurate representation of the vintage 87 it's intended to replicate.
Thanks for checking out the video! It sounds like we're on a similar gear path at the moment, very cool. I agree about the Beesneez, it really removes the aspects of the AI version that I don't like. It is a really smooth mic.
Good sounding unit. I think it's sweet spot is in the 2-3 dB range which you didn't spend a lot of time exploring. Other than that, it shined on vocals with the output pushed...which is what the 2A is known for, so yeah, nice unit, good review! Cheers
I'll be honest with you, if I'm doing 2-3db of gain reduction I'll just stick with a plug in. I know everyone works differently but hardware is where I go to push things beyond what I can get in the box 👍🏼. Thanks for checking out the video, cheers.
Sounds great, thanks for the demo. Sounds good when you started to push the output, but I've tried to do this and the LA has so much gain that I find it hard to not clip my converters. Did you have something in the signal chain after the LA to reduce level to the A/D?
Thanks! I had it connected directly to my Avid HD I/O 16x16. I keep a close eye on the converter during this reviews to make sure it's never clipping. It had enough headroom thankfully to push the output of the Opto a bit. If your converter is clipping earlier than you like, I would definitely check into adding an attenuator in line just to make your Opto more flexible.
Very nice video man!! I'm going to order one of this unit soon. I have a question, the HF control, controls the amount of highs or low frequencies that you are compressing? Or males all the sound lower or higher?... Thanks and keep rocking!!!!!
Thanks man! I appreciate you checking it out. My understanding of the HF control is that the more you turn it counter clock wise, the more low frequencies are filtered out of what goes to the T4B. In real world use I feel like more low end can be heard the further you turn it counter clock wise because it is focusing more on the just compressing high end. Hopefully @AudioScape Engineering Co. can chime in and make sure I'm not butchering the description here haha.
Thanks to you for theese helpfull videos that you make. Ok, I think that I got the idea man, when you turn to rigth the compression is more focused on the High frecuencies so the lows passed with minor compression and are more present. Thanks and sorry for my english... Let's wait if Charlie has to say something hahaha
I really like the BU87! I started working on the review but winter is being rough on the voice at the moment so I wasn't able to finish it how I wanted. It's on the to do list though! Thanks for your comment.
Yeah for the units that have a bypass switch I do that, but unfortunately this one doesn’t. I tried to start each example with no gain reduction so I hope you still got something useful from it though 👍🏻
It's not the most colorful compressor in the world but it does do gain reduction quite well which is sometimes exactly how you want it to work. I do, in general prefer more colorful vari mu style comps which you can find reviews of on my channel if you're interested!
Hey Josh, Just wondering was this the Beesneez 87 on the vocals? Would love to know the vocal chain used for Patricks vocals before the Opto in this example. Which btw sounds absolutely amazing! Great review...

I've had the pleasure of using both! I do love a good Sta Level style comp but it is a much thicker color than the Opto comp so if it's a color you like, you'll love it! If you need something with less of a sonic footprint, the Opto is definitely a good all around comp. When the Sta Level sound is right though, it's awfully hard to beat so it's definitely worth at least trying to see what you think!
