- Hope everyone had a great 4th of July weekend. Speaking of great, Tony and Newt watched the original summer blockbuster, JAWS! In this Podcast / Movie Review Tony and Newt will talk about the things that make Jaws Great! Like the outstanding performances by the cast, the innovative camera work used to film around the technical limitations they had, and Spielberg's amazing ability to fill his audience with suspense.

When a young woman is killed by a shark while skinny-dipping near the New England tourist town of Amity Island, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) wants to close the beaches, but mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) overrules him, fearing that the loss of tourist revenue will cripple the town. Ichthyologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and grizzled ship captain Quint (Robert Shaw) offer to help Brody capture the killer beast, and the trio engage in an epic battle of man vs. nature.

Look up Dreyfus interview in Ireland. A recent talkshow appearance where he discussed the film and working with Shaw. Plus a surprise that makes Dreyfus cry. Very emotional

Besides Jaws 4 being bad, the only explanation I have is Brody explained what happened from the events of the first movie and Ellen just so happened to imagine what happened based on what she was told by her husband.

Agree with Newt that the Quint monologue is one of the best in movie history. Everything about that was perfectly executed.
“He’s got lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll’s eyes.”
- Newts father, on the day of his sons birth.
That line seems like it inspired the very similar line said in the great Horror movie Halloween that is Michael Myers has the blackest eyes.

This makes me want to rewatch Jaws. Haven't seen it in over 10 years and I recently found the special edition DVD at goodwill, so it is time 😎🍻

The Sugarland Express was Spielberg's first feature film. Duel was made for television.
What an absolute Classic, they don't make them like they use to.
One of The creepiest things about Quint's monologue is how he gives a little chuckle after he says "no distress signal had been sent......"
I am 51 Nowadays and luckily thanks to my Dad I got to See JAWS twice in theaters , 1975 , its first week ever out and about , Twice mainly because I was cringing too much etc from it the first time I saw it. lol I got then to see the other sequels in theaters then after times too. Plus I read and have the book in Hardcover too since a kid too.
the idea was, Newt comes to the nearest man and that man, he'd start poundin' and hollerin' and screamin', and sometimes Newt would go away... sometimes he wouldn't go away. Sometimes Newt would look right into ya. Right into your eyes. Y'know the thing about Newt , he's got... lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be livin'... until he starts talking about old movies. And those black eyes roll over white, and then... oh, then you hear that terrible high-pitch screamin', the store turns red, and spite of all the poundin' and the hollerin', Newt comes in to rip you to pieces........

Killer Shark was a real game made by Sega in 1972. Apparently it wasn't that popular, until it was featured in this film. So Jaws gave it more steam and it became REALLY successful.
I'm 52 Nowadays and Thanks to my Dad I got to See This one Twice in theaters its first Week Ever it Opened. , And Then I got to see the Sequels each in theaters too.

Jaws is my favourite movie, when I was 8 or 9, I used to muck around with a friend and pretend with a slide at the park, either being Quint or Broady as Bruce jumped on the Orca. FYI sometimes it was hard playing a game of accidentally on purpose 😅
I didn’t see Jaws in its entirety until about 5 years ago. Good movie. Long movie. It deserves a rewatch.

The ending of the book had the shark wrapped up in line, lunge straight for Brody then abruptly die and sink.
They homaged that in The Meg.

My second favorite movie of all time… hell’s yes!
To add to the tragedy of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis the captain: Charles McVay, was later court-martialed by the Navy for not following evasion procedures while in hostile waters. And they'd actually brought in the Japanese captain of the sub which sank the Indianapolis to testify against him, but he turned out a better friend to the defense, as he told how the conditions were so fair on that day that zigzagging wouldn't have made a difference. Eventually McVay would commit suicide in 1968, and far too late for him he was exonerated in October of 2001. On TV, Stacey Keach played McVay in the TV movie: The Mission of The Shark: The Saga of the USS Indianapolis(1991)

Seeing, "The Bear" in the background gives me hope that other people have seen the movie, and that it will live on. Movie is very near and dear to my heart
The Exorcist is usually considered the first blockbuster film, and Billy Jack was the first film to do the wide release model of distribution, not Jaws.

On the steel-book version of the movie it has a deleted scene and an outtake of Quints assistant quitting...he tells him he's not going out to hunt the shark. Quint tells him to make sure the boats ready and then to get out.

I forget what Newt said was the movie he introduced James to (I remember it's one I like), but glad that it sounds like they're going to go all out for "Monster Madness."

I always thought Brody looked at his scar and didn’t talk about it was because it was a bullet wound from being a cop in the city and might have happened recently- which is why they moved to Amity- so he wasn’t ready to talk about it.
I think it was a peritonitis scar.
I just realized, the little dog from The Meg that survives is also named Pippin. A subtle homage maybe?

It was his third feature. First theatrical film was The Sugarland Express in 74.
I'm truly about to expose my age. I remember the SCUBA acronym from Family Ties. Alex was trying to tutor his dipsh*t sister, and the only thing I remember about that show is her remembering that acronym.
I love Jaws too. It is my favorite movie of all time. But just a friendly footnote that you probably have already heard about, but Spielberg had another theatrical movie before Jaws called The Sugarland Express. But Jaws is that shit. Thanks for your video of Jaws

I literally live 10 mins. from Matawan, N.J. The Attacks happened in Matawan Creek. Also, there was another shark attack that happened in the waters at Asbury Park N.J. and it was a combination of both events that influenced Benchley...
I believe both attacks were bull sharks too.
@@mikemodica2656 well, the one that was in the creek was most likely a Bull. Yes. The Asbury Park attack(s) were a White shark. There is actually a movie about it. "12 Days of Terror" it's just Ok, and I'm sure they took a few liberties with the story, but it's worth a watch!
I cant argue the Asbury park one but i could have sworn both were bull sharks since they're naturally vicious and thrive in shallow and brackish water.
@@mikemodica2656 Matawan Creek is definitely Brackish. And Bulls can survive in Fresh Water even for a time. So yea...quite possible (and most likely) a Bull Shark. The Asbury Park ocean water was (is) not "Brackish" where the attacks took place (my Aunt Angie was from Asbury)...and the men that killed the Asbury shark (apparently) identified it as a White shark. White sharks have been sighted (and filmed) in Jersey waters to this day. But who knows? The idea of ANY type of large shark with teeth still scares the sh*t out of me either way.
I think it's funny that Newt calls the split diopter the Jaws shot when I call the push/pull effect the Jaws shot. I call split diopter the De Palma shot.
23:39 in the book Brody is looking through there is a photo of a Shark with a foreboding Tank in its mouth , in the book.
