  • Tony, Newt, and Crystal get together to Talk about Steven Spielberg's HOOK!
In this Podcast/Movie Review they will discus all the things that might be horrible in the film. Like the sets that look like an obvious theme park, the terrible acting by Julia Roberts, and the weak script.
When his young children are abducted by his old nemesis, Capt. Hook (Dustin Hoffman), middle-aged lawyer Peter Banning (Robin Williams) returns to his magical origins as Peter Pan. Peter must revisit a foggy past in which he abandoned Neverland for family life, leaving Tinkerbell (Julia Roberts) and the Lost Boys to fend for themselves. Given their bitterness toward Peter for growing up -- and their allegiance to their new leader, Rufio -- the old gang may not be happy to see him.

I am with Crystal on this one. It was made for 90’s kids and Tony said it himself, at the time he liked the movie. It’s a kids movie and much of the “issues” like imagination food etc work when it’s in that context of it being a kids fantasy film. Of course it’s not gonna work the same for jaded adults looking at it now, of course kids these days because of how kids movies these days are different etc that they too might not like it.

    • @thedizzyparker

I have so much nostalgia and warm feeling for this film, which no doubt clouds my judgement. I usually watch it around Christmas, and while not really a Christmas movie, I associate it with my childhood and it makes me feel ‘Christmassy.’
Maybe the story is a bit weak, and I didn’t really like the new lost boys, who had American accents for some reason. But the music is fantastic (John Williams knocked it out of the park), the costumes are fantastic, and Hoffman and Hoskins are fantastic. It’s a great kids movie, and I can happily sit through it every year or so as a grown adult.

I'm surprised it took Hook as long as it did to find Peter Pan, because "Peter Banning" is a terrible fake name. It's way too similar to his real name! It's like if Tony was hiding from the Great Newt Horde and their overlord, The Dark Queen Crystal, and he changed his name to "Tommy the Film Hacker." The newts would find Tony immediately, because he's famous like Peter Pan.

Mary Martin was the really famous actress that played Peter Pan on stage and in fact she was the first to do so. Cathy Rigby was later, I am not surprised Tony remembers her as she was the actress when he was a kid in the 90's. Newt you however are just a little older than I am and you should have remembered Mary Martin, they used to show her tv version every year around Christmas in the 80's right up through the early 90's. Both Mary Martin and Cathy Rigby versions were released on VHS, The Cathy Rigby version might have a DVD, I am not sure if the Mary Martin version ever got a DVD. I still have my Mary Martin version on VHS.

I'm with Tony on the parents being away thing. As a kid whose dad was gone at work a lot due to starting a business while I was in middle school, I loved my dad being away. He couldn't completely ruin my day and drive me crazy by setting ridiculous limits and being and punishing me for nothing at all if he wasnt around. I loved it.
P.S. As a kid I stopped giving a shit whether my dad came to support me for things after I was 8 and realized that investment came with no returns. But I also realize not every child hated their parent for making them into a crazy person.

Ok so in the Victorian era Peter was taken to neverland. In neverland he stopped ageing like the lost boys also do. All adults in neverland are pirates. If you grow up you’re doomed to be a villain.
Peter stated aging because he kept spending so much time visiting in London. Then he met Moira and decided to stay and started ageing like a normal person.

There is actually answers for the vast majority of these questions they have that are constant with the books. However, they are missing the biggest answer from the movie. There is supposed to be this ambiguity about if any of this was actually real or not. Did he go to Neverland, or did he have a break with reality? Everyone in Neverland was actually people from the real world. Even Captain Hook was the plane captain from the plane over there.
