Beetlejuice is Hysterical! - Talking About Tapes

- Tony, Crystal, and Johanna get together to talk about the Tim Burton comedy classic, Beetljuice! in this movie review/podcast they will talk about all the things that make Beetlejuice hysterical! Like the creative way it depicts the afterworld, the hilarious ghost gags throughout the film, and the non stop humor from Michael Keaton.
After Barbara (Geena Davis) and Adam Maitland (Alec Baldwin) die in a car accident, they find themselves stuck haunting their country residence, unable to leave the house. When the unbearable Deetzes (Catherine O'Hara, Jeffrey Jones) and teen daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder) buy the home, the Maitlands attempt to scare them away without success. Their efforts attract Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), a rambunctious spirit whose "help" quickly becomes dangerous for the Maitlands and innocent Lydia.

I love gung ho. My favorite Michael Keaton movie.
Hi, Tony! You totally should have wore a snake mask with the shirt you had and been the sand worm for the episode. That would've been pretty sweet 😁
So, I have a little insight on why there's always island music playing. It's because Adam and Barbara were on vacation when they died. Island music is vacation-like. Also, I'm pretty sure the music is reggae. I know it's Harry Belafonte, so I'm probably right.
Thanks for mentioning the size of the text on the box shards -- I noticed that immediately and had to work on getting myself back into the movie at that point. Oh, the horror.
Tony looks like a grown up version of Pugsly Addams instead of a Beetlejuice character. Lol
I have that shirt.........
😂
"I hope Alec Baldwin is not mad at us". Only Tony could make a joke too soon one week early
scrolled too far down for this comment
Take a shot every time Crystal says "So Good." RIP
Or "Yaaaaas!" Lol
Or "I love" or "that's one of my favorite movies".
How bout take a shot every time u realize shes just too annoying to date for a week. Talk about seen not heard.
But no, shes cool.
Thats not a game its a fight for survival
And that's how you become a social worker in the afterlife
Football player: "Coach...I don't think we survived that crash."
Juno: "How'd you guess?"
All we need is Justin dressed as Otho.
I am 100% in agreement, the guy is a dead ringer for Otho and I see why he feels like he has a connection to Glenn.
If those were Red Stripes, Tony would look like Tug Boat. The WWF Wrestler from the early 90’s.
same age too
Doooooh! 👍
If you say Newt’s name three times, he’ll appear in this episode.
Newt Newt Newt
Newt! Newt! Newt! :D hope it works
Here he comes riding a samdworm!
This could work as a patreon video where there bring in something starring Beetlejuice of Howard stern fame
He actually just tweeted out he's not going to be on hack the movies anymore 😟
@@kevinb44 It's because he got fired for plagiarizing cinemassacre scripts
The type of music is called Calypso, Tony.
Not the same movie without it
I release you from your human bonds!
So I saw Tony on an episode of Drunk History. It's the Philadelphia one. He's hanging out in a bar and gets interviewed by the show. It was totally unexpected... True Philly man through and through.
I heard about this and had to immediately scroll through the episode to watch him say 3 sentences like 50 times just to soak it in
Phone call part had me cracking up. Must have been hilarious hearing that for the first time.
Tony is the Beetlejuice we have at home
So glad you guys reviewed Beetlejuice! I saw this in theaters with my older brother. One of my favorites. Johanna and Crystal look great!! Nice shirt Tony. Haha!
When Krystal said, "It's not like it would still fit." I thought for sure Tony was going to grab the Power Rangers VHS and ruin the video.
Honestly I think Michael Keaton's best performance was in the 1993 movie "My Life" where he's a husband, he and his wife are expecting their first child, he get's diagnosed with terminal cancer and will die before the kid is born. He makes a video diary so his kid will know who his father was. The acting is phenomenal. Comedy to heart breaking sadness and everything in between. Really shows his range as an actor.
There's actually a deleted scene that shows a sandworm trying to get the Maitlands when they're hanging from the window. There's also an alternate scene when Adam leaves the house and giant gears attack him instead of sandworms. Someone actually uploaded both scenes on RUclips from a black and white workprint of the film.
BEETLEJUICE YES!! I have a very personal connection with this movie, I'm so excited to see you guys talk about it. ALSO! It was really nice catching up with you all at TMG 2021, the live panel was awesome and my favorite part of the convention! Thanks so much :)!!
Love the movie and also the cartoon. I have a beetlejuice tattoo on my wrist from the cartoon opening. This film is a classic.
Beetlejuice was my first movie theater experience back at the ripe age of 10. I always think of it fondly. Its still great. We went and saw it last year when it was at the theaters again. At the original release I was there with 4 or 5 friends and the birthday boy's mom, who was the absolute coolest to take us. The nice FN model caught her off guard but we all howled like idiots. Such a weird segment of life for me at that time. I can remember sitting in class drawing Beetlejuice or the Enterprise from Next Generation. I was an odd duck. The 80s where you can be PG and drop an F bomb. Simpler times. Better times
And here I thought I was the only person who ever played Polterguy on Sega Genesis, haha. I loved that game as a kid
That haunt the house game app is definitely a ripoff from that.
I TOTALLY tried to draw a door myself as a kid LOL, Glad to hear I am not the only one!
Nice work Tony. I look forward to "Talkin About Tapes" now
All star cast again! Newt you better come back with some killer stories. Shout out to all at Hack the Movies. Thanks again for another great start to my week!
If he comes back I'll he'll do is stare at Crystal. Thatpervert can stay out of these episodes as long as he wants to
@@elliesanders5525 Can't disagree that it really seems he needs to get over Crystal. The passive aggressive "please take me back!" thing is getting old, but his stories are pure gold.
As someone with anxiety, I like to see how others deal with theirs. And Newt's way is definitely way more interesting than mine.
Also he isn't always on episodes with Crystal. He's done plenty with other members of the panels.
However I must repeat, that the only thing that would make a Johanna/🔮 episode better would be a J/C/Tricia episode busting Tony's balls.
He's got this really good story about how he just ripped off all the scripts he wrote for monster madness.
I'm from Rosario, Argentina, birthplace of Alberto Olmedo aka Capitan Piluso, he was a legendary comedian in our country. He was in a bizarre ET rip off "Los Extraterrestres" check it out!
It’s weird that Burton has never done a directors commentary for this movie.
You ever notice the little girl in the car that rolls up her window when Lydia approaches her? It’s the little touches like that that you might miss the first time you see the movie.
He released a book called
Burton on Burton
where he discusses Beetlejuice,
but I would also have enjoyed a director's commentary.
@@abegarfield543 an ex-girlfriend gave me that book, which was weird because I was not into Tim Burton movies. To me, most interesting thing about the book was Burton’s miserable experience making Batman’89.
Johanna’s Robin Thicke costume is awesome!
Michael Keaton played a great villain in Desperate Measures. Was heaps good :)
Did Tony just get out of prison? Because it looks like he's wearing one of those old-timey prison uniforms.
@@JazziG59 thats a pretty personal question
Puglsy?

With the ball and chain hanging behind him he is Cody in Street Fighter.
One of my fav movies of all time! Can't wait, this is gonna be a great episode
Last October my local theater had a showing of this movie. Obviously I'd seen it before, but my son hadn't, and was visiting that weekend, so of course I took him to see it. And he loved it.
Everybody liked that
DAY-OH! Dayyyyyy-oh. The guy who died from smoking was the funniest for me. I remember when I saw this movie when I was really young and tried to draw doors on walls and see if it would open.
Beetlejuice 2 is coming and I can't wait.
Watching this today, Alec Baldwins phone call has a whole new level of threat 😳
I just watched this on a 52” tv in a hotel room, you folks have great quality for a talkie!
I love this movie. The scenes in the afterlife waiting room are my favorite, especially Juno the case worker.
Loved this film ever since I was a kid. Vaguely remember watching the cartoon, as Tony says I should revisit that to see how it holds up.
Best episode yet
"That actor" was great and memorable in so many roles. This, Stay Tuned, Ferris, Howard the Duck, etc. Sucks he turned out to be a creep
He was also in one of my guilty pleasures: Transylvania 6-5000
I'd bet the majority of celebrities are drug addicted perverts.
Although, let's face facts, he was pretty much a creep in every role he's been in.
He was also in The Pest
@@excessmaterial MAN! I haven't thought about that movie in FOREVER!!! I used to love when I was a kid.
i really really enjoy watching these. there just people talking about movie but a good group dynamic! thanks for the show.
Fun fact-my dad took me and my brother to see this in the theater. We went home and all convinced my mom to come see it with us. So, I saw Beetlejuice in the theater twice 😎
A movie that will never gets old
"I'm shocked they didn't make a sequel out of this" Boy do i have news for you
No mention of Dark Knight Rises or Swamp Zombies 2. It's a miracle!
My favorite Burton movie! Thanks for talking about it. Keep the spooky coming!
I met An Beetlejuice this month with Tony, and now I'm excited to see this review!
Watch this all time as kid with batman and batman returns an sure here in UK on vhs they were all rated 15
"Jump in the Line" is a Calypso song. There is even a line in the song that says, "Senora dances Calypso. Left to right is the tempo"
Crystal as Delia... 😂
I’m giving another vote for “The Frighteners” for review. Highly underrated movie. 👻
I second this.
Third
The only other channel that rivals hack the movies is red letter media. I have started to appreciate you guys more because you upload so much. You seriously get me through the work week!
I’m in the same boat. I used to dislike hack the movies quite a bit but it’s since grown on me and I feel genuine excitement when I see a new premiere video
This movie is woven in my DNA from repeated childhood viewings.
When you see this young you don't realize how crazy weird it is.
I've seen someone make a sandworm trick or treat chute where the candy comes out of its mouth. There's a video on how to make one and it honestly looks awesome.
Otho, you’re into the Occult ? ... I dabble.
Soo pumped up for this one! I can't wait...
Beetlejuice has to be my third favorite movie of all time. I actually got the 20th anniversary DVD for dirt cheap.
Great film. Also if anyone has the chance to see the Broadway musical DO SO. It was FANTASTIC.
Though I know I should be wary, still I venture someplace scary! Ghostly hauntings I turn loose...Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!
another guilty pleasure of mine. and this movie has way more meaning nowadays because my 8 year old daughter loves watching this movie with me. she even told me she likes it because it creeps her out. her actual words .
p.s the girls and their costumes are dope af, why is tony is dressed as pugsley ?
There's a Tim Curry movie called Pirates of the Plain and it's beyond description.
I'm 52 Nowadays And Got To see This Movie in Theaters Back Then. (:
My theory: if he would've stopped to talk to the old man, they never would've crossed paths with the dog at that specific time.
The moral is take it easy and stop to smell the roses. Don't always be in a rush.
Johnny Dangerously is underrated, Multiplicity is a personal favorite
If they eventually review "Hocus Pocus"(with the same host), what characters would they be?🤔 Johanna as Winifred, Crystal as Sarah and Tony as Cathy Najimy... I mean Mary. I can see that review being pure chaos 😆
Yesss this would be amazing lol
@@JokerJoestar726 lol it would be an interesting episode.
I have a feeling they will review it by the way Tony reluctantly said “oh yeah, I have to rewatch Hocus Pocus”... as if some of them decided to review that soon and he didn’t care for it but now has to watch it again.
@@fishrenfroeboyd7954 that's true, for all we know it could be the next review. lol
Great episode as usual! P.S: I'm the guy from Argentina referenced at 37:14! My voicemail never came out on the show but this was way better 🙌
Oh, my goodness, do you not know about Harry Belafonte?! You owe yourself the treat. The style of music he specialized in can be broadly classified at Calypso.
Agree about Jeffrey Jones; I will say though, that he did a very good job as the Emperor in "Amadeus", and it really saddened me to find out what sort of a horrible person he is in real life.
I always figured the sandworms are in the ground where the people are buried. Not Saturn.
Considering how we see Beetlejuice at the end in the waiting room as a new arrival, I think that means he succeeded in his plan until the sandworm ate him.
one of my favorite tim burton movies
I still have a pull string Beetlejuice doll from 1989. Still in the box.
32:08 This is like Mama Bear's fate in the original Shrek.
Fun fact, a friend of mine actually has that exact same tattoo idea that Johanna had lol down to the “no feet” quote
Michael Keaton is also in The Other Guys as Captain Gene, a under-rated funny film.
He's probably the best part of
The Other guys.
A really good character,
played brilliantly.
The song Day-O is from a genre called calypso
I was out of town for a couple weeks, and I'm just now watching this episode. It's a little surreal now.
anybody think they should review the freighteners with michael jay fox
YES!! The Frighteners is fantastic!
I don't think his middle name is Jay, it just starts with a J
Continue the Halloween/ Jeffrey Jones theme and review Transylvania 65000. One of the greatest 80's movies ever...
Watched this on my sons 8th birthday. And he was eating his cake. The bit were the shrimp hands come. He throw his cake and plate in the air to hide his eyes. And the cake landed on the plate as it came down and landed perfectly lol. He hasn’t watched the film since. 😂
i was a little kid in the 1980s and Tim Curry was quite the actor in Worst Witch, Clue the Movie, Legend and as creep Rooster in Annie
I watched Clue
(or Cluedo as it's called here in the UK, as is the game)
again last night.
Curry is fantastic
(as he normally is)
in it.
You are fascinated by many things Quin.
Gonna watch the movie tomorrow after watching this great review!
My 4 year old is obsessed with Beatle juice
I fall asleep every time I try to watch this episode. Johanna looks like she knows she won’t be getting a word in.
I get my fashion advice from Beetlejuice.
Loved this episode. But what's going on with the lighting? It looks so cold and dim.
You probably don't know, but in Spain we have the most infamous way to write Beetlejuice wich is "Bitelchus"
if you haven't, you SHOULD see Gung Ho and Mr. Mom. absolutely showcases for Michael Keaton.
Lot of grasping early on, what the cartoon what made me grasp is between reality and not reality when Lydia went to the netherworld.
Johanna simp checking in
Cut to 2 years later and there is a sequel to Beetlejuice coming out. 😀
Nice hamburglar outfit Tony
Say you're a woman without saying you're a woman.
"I love cheese, chocolate and wine."
Johnny dangerously edges out Beetlejuice for best Keaton role.
No mention of Patrice Martinez!? The receptionist was the hot mexican girl in Three Amigos.
I'm shocked that you didn't mention that this is Robert Goulet's most famous role. I could have sworn that Newt was doing his impersonation of Will Farrell impersonating Goulet the last time that Newt was on this show.
Coconut bangers ball: it’s a rap!
I agree with your guest. The actor who shall not be named has always been a creep. Put Paul Rubens in that same role and it makes the movie even better.
Velveeta Shells and Cheese is the king of all (boxed) Mac & Cheese
YES!
I like the Edward Scissorhands and Mr Deeds versions of Winona Ryder.
Baldwin sure upped the rage when he abandoned angry answering machine messages to murder
The year after this Keaton played Batman.
It's funny how Beetlejuice and Bruce Wayne are such different characters played by the same actor only 1 year apart from each other.
It’s called range. Otherwise known as “not Being a Keanu Reeves”
When it comes to the question of why the Maitland's look like themselves and the other ghost look ghoulish, I view it as it's because they are pure of spirit so they look normal. The afterlife receptionist even said "it's all very personal".
Beetlejuice 2 is listed as in-development on imdb... but doesnt look like it has gotten anywhere.
The song The Banana Boat song is from a Caribbean genre of music know as Calypso which was very popular in the fifties and sixties. and this song was a big hit for Harry Belafonte who started his entertainment career as a Calypso singer
