- Tony, Johanna, and Trisha look back at The Others since it is now 20 years old! In this Podcast / Movie Review they will talk about the spooky things in The Others! Like the creepy dark mansion setting, the really good sound design, and the scary old lady that shows up occasionally. Keep any eye out for clips from the Bollywood remake.
Grace (Nicole Kidman), the devoutly religious mother of Anne (Alakina Mann) and Nicholas (James Bentley), moves her family to the English coast during World War II. She awaits word on her missing husband while protecting her children from a rare photosensitivity disease that causes the sun to harm them. Anne claims she sees ghosts, Grace initially thinks the new servants are playing tricks but chilling events and visions make her believe something supernatural has occurred.

This movie is one of the rare instances, when i didn’t know the plot before watching and didn’t see the twist coming. To be fair, that was one of the best thriller experiences i’ve had to this day.

Apparently people either love or hate Signs. There is no middle ground.
It's all right. It does a really good job of building tension and atmosphere and then kind of falls apart at the end.
Never saw this. I remember the commercials for it and the "I'm your daughter!" the one ghost said in it lol

Dude, that old lady scare STILL messes with me. This was arguably the first horror movie I ever saw, and I’m glad. No monster, no jump scares, just a slow burn creepy ass plot and some amazing acting

I saw The Very Famous and Handsome Tony mention how cool title sequences are both at the end now for union rules. To give some credit to the newer Godzilla reboots, they went all in on the cool intro thing. Godzilla Vs. Kong almost gave me a seizure in the first 10 minutes. It was great.

I remember seeing this in the theater the summer it came out. Was in summer school and one of the teachers happened to work for Warner Brothers. So he'd give us tickets. A buddy of mine and I once saw 3 movies in one night. This was one of em. As for most my mind was also blown at this twist. The entire theater gasped. Def a great film.

22:24: It's a shotgun. Rifles have rifling in them. Rifling is a series of grooves cut inside the barrel that spin the bullet to stabilize it. Shotguns are smoothbore. Shotguns don't have any rifling inside the barrel because shotguns shoot shot or small pellets that scatter when fired. This is why shotguns are sometime also known as scatterguns.

All good points, however it should be mentioned that "double rifles" DO exist. So, two barrels side by side does not necessarily mean it is a shotgun. Also, not all shotguns are smoothbore. Some shotguns have rifled barrels for better accuracy with slugs and other types of shotgun loads.
Not all rifles necessarily have rifling. for example old rifles.

I was working in a theater when this came out. Right before the jumpscare with the old woman's face. A friend and I would get underneath the seats and bang on the floor of the seats with our brooms.
I love this movie. Very subtle ghost movie with an unique ending. Moulin Rouge and this movie provides Nicole Kidman with great material to help bring her our of Tom Cruise's shadow.
Trish actually said the last name Amenabar right. You should check Mar Abierto, amazing movie with an incredible performance by Javier Bardem.

We had to read The Turn of the Screw for English at the time and my teacher I believe said this was loosely based on it. Yes I was in high school 20 years ago… being old is no fun haha
Amenábar's Abre Los Ojos was remade as the wretched Vanilla Sky. Tesis is fantastic. Mar Adentro is also really good. However, Regression is pretty bad and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
I remember vanilla sky being decent. One of the only decent Tom cruise movies. It has been well over a decade since I've seen it though. Maybe 2.

I went to a drive in at the time that had a double feature of The Others and then Jeepers Creepers. I liked both movies, though that was the only time I saw The Others. I'll have to watch it again before watching this review since it's been 20 years.

Watched this at the movies when it came out, back in the day when I had no clue what most of the movies I would go and see would be and I enjoyed it. I still avoid internet movie reviews to stop putting me off films, but movies get plastered everywhere these days and sort of spoil movies a bit before they even come out.

I was a kid when it came out. I didn't see the movie until 2019. I was to scared to watch it as a kid. When I 1st saw it scared me in a good way. Didn't see the twist coming.

I clicked to hear about tapes but I stayed for the gun show!EDIT 25:54 Sorry to be that guy, but it's nine circles of hell. Nine is the most significant number in the Comedy and it comes back multiple times. Like Tony said, Comedy was referring to the type of poetry:at the time there were at least three main genres of poetry, comedy being the one used in the hell part because of the material (there are devils farting, naked people screaming, scenes of horror), middle ground poetry used in the purgatory part(mainly political issues, refined dialogues about literature, philosophy and so on..), high poetry in the paradise part(abstract concepts, the unknown, the ineffable beauty of God's love). I don't remember the movie but there could be 4 parts of hell : the entry hall of Hell, Limbo, Hell proper, either Cania(the darkest and deepest part of hell) or purgatory, which is still a place of punishment mind you, if not so harsh
When i was watching this. The lights in my room went out. Now as a MAN i wasnt phased by it at all, but my dog who is a weak female ran under the bed and started to whimper. (True story)

Are Trisha and Tony related?
I don’t believe in ghosts either, but Tony’s theorem is hardly fool proof. It assumes all ghost stories are true or all false. Maybe the pet stories are fake, but people ghosts aren’t. Or maybe it depends on the level of intelligence and will power. Or it depends on connection to people (like a person is more connected to their departed dog than the deer they hit). Maybe there are a ton of ghost deer, but we don't see them because they're not noticeable to us. There could also be a time limit so the dinosaurs have moved on long ago.
