In music as in life, the things that make us different make us stronger. All the various instruments, tones, perspectives, and cultures in this recording combine to create a new version of this classic Song Around The World.
The idea was born a few years ago during breakfast at the Byron Bay Bluesfest in Australia. Our friend and drummer, Peter Bunetta, introduced me to Tom Johnston of The Doobie Brothers and we talked about taking "Listen to the Music" around the world. We started the track with an acoustic guitar demo played to a click track and then added bass from Colombia, tablas and veena from India, and then headed to the Redwood Forest in Northern California to record and film Tom Johnston live outside. We then recorded and filmed Patrick Simmons and John McFee playing along to the track in a park in San Diego. The journey then continued throughout North and South America, Europe, The Middle East, Asia, and Africa. This final version features 30 musicians from 12 countries united through their love of music.

Playing For Change (PFC) is a movement created to inspire and connect the world through music, born from the shared belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. The primary focus of PFC is to record and film musicians performing in their natural environments and combine their talents and cultural power in innovative videos called Songs Around The World. Creating these videos motivated PFC to form the Playing For Change Band-a tangible, traveling representation of its mission, featuring musicians met along their journey; and establish the Playing For Change Foundation-a separate 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to building music and art schools for children around the world. Through these efforts, Playing For Change aims to create hope and inspiration for the future of our planet.

I'm a grown ass 65 year old man and this made me almost cry ! The song has been with me my entire adult life and only just now did it finally become crystal clear what it's full meaning is ! Just WOW !

i am now 62 years old, as a teenager i used to play this song with my 8 track in the car, in the 70's. Blaring out louds as i drive down the road. i love this music. Bring back memory!!! :)

And to see and hear it being performed by musicians all over the world........it brought me to tears. With all the hatred and division and evil in the world, this is what we need now more than ever. Something about the mixture of instruments and vocals makes this way better than the original, the piano and sitar take this to a new level the original band couldn’t and they were (are) exceptional talents! Emotional blast with beautiful places and fantastic talented musicians. This is music in is purest form!

I have no words to describe the joy these videos from Playing for Change give to so many people.
I can only wish that some day bringing all people of the world together will be as easy and timely fashion as bringing this musical collaboration of outstanding musicians together. I grew up on listening to the Doobie Brothers during my youth in the 60's and 70's and through all this time they have remained dedicated in perusing and preserving a world full of love and peace by way of their musical messaging. I have seen them at least 25 times over the last 40 years and they have never disappointed in delivering a lengthy concert with positive energy. I have tickets for their 50th Anniversary tour which was unfortunately cancelled this year but have full confidence they will resume their tour next year. I am also a musician and have been playing their music since my early teens,... it never gets old.
See you next year in Detroit(DTE Energy Center, Clarkson, Michigan) and Toronto & London, Ontario,... can't wait!

I was seven when this song was originally recorded. Its so beautiful but it fills me with such sadness and loss. Everything is so cheap and mean and hollow now. I just want to go back and get out of this horrible time........
