It's not that extreme. I recently saw a video about top tier boxers who actually got into the sport very late (guys were in their 20s) and still became very successful.

Something I heard Lu say in an intervew is that he doesn't even really train the jerk before competitions, and only really does heavy back squats. And the reason he gave was that the jerk is so utterly dialed in he doesn't need to practice it he just needs to build his strength back up to perform it
