That was pretty cool and insane. Only in crossfit. But also gotta give credit to crossfit mindset cause thats exactly the type of stuff you would expect from people who do all kinds of funny movements.
should really scour the internet then dude. You can get a used pair of lifters for $30 bucks. They only need to be able to lace up and have a non compressible heel. Best time to look is around Black Friday and when new versions of popular shoes come out. You could get Romaleos 2 for less than $90 at one point last year. Or try Do-Win. $50 shipped. Ebay and places like Poshmark and Mercari are your friend. give it a go. No excuses.
@@Dlogreen Sadly I live in New Zealand where it is much harder to find cheap sellars that ship for a resonable price and there is essentially no second hand market here. The average price for a pair of heeled shoes is around $130 NZD which might not sound like much to some but I really don't have that kind of money availible
You can turn a stable pair of flats into 'heeled' shoes with an insert you can make yourself. Scrap soft wood or hard plastic, some sandpaper, knife cutting and glue, then place that wedge beneath the insole. Voila. The "pro" shoes often come with adjustable heel height in the form of similar inserts.
Demon King When Coleman squatted 800x2, he was wearing a squat suit. This makes it pretty much impossible to reach the same depth you can in a raw squat bc on how tense the suit is. It’s just a different method of squatting. If he squatted raw and for strength, he would have been stronger than Kennedy due to being twice his size.
Demon King if Ronnie Coleman dedicated himself to powerlifting the same way he did to bodybuilding, he would be one of if not the greatest powerlifters of all time.
Dror Levi he had back injuries from high school. He enjoyed bodybuilding style training more as well. He also only competed in deadlift only meets and only a couple. Powerlifting wasn’t that huge back then so someone like Ronnie would gravitate to bodybuilding. If you consider a 500 raw bench for 4-5 easy reps, that 800x2 squat with easily one more in the tank, and his raw 800x2 or 3 deadlift 3 weeks out from a bodybuilding comp (depleted, low energy), which there is footage of him doing, “average” than...ok lol
So just to clarify my final point. If you notice on the frame where I’m comparing Taos catch to Toshikis, Tians hips are situated slightly further back than Toshikis. Tian is still however relatively upright even though with the hips back like this, it is much more difficult. Barring the difficulty, Tians positioning is vastly superior to Toshiki’s in this regard. I pointed to the head positioning of Tian as a tell tale sign of said better positioning. Toshiki may have found that the metcons could allow him to get his hips in a better position (one that SEEMS less upright because of the better head positioning). If you look at the 163 snatch it seems that this point is true. Again, take what I say with a steaming heap of table salt because I don’t know the guy. This video was just a response to the crazy amount of commenting on Hookgrip and on reddit.
As basic as this sounds I wouldn't mind you doing a video on front and backsquat inefficencies and how to improve upon them for taller lifters. I love snatching but I hate CnJerking because my front squat at any given point either sucks or causes lower back problems and I get the feeling there's something missing beyond obsessing about mobility. As a fellow 6'7" giraffe getting into oly I'd appreciate it.
Bradley Bradley or even just a video explaining efficiency based on various limb proportions. I have short arms, shorts legs, and a long torso, but super long femurs, so I’m like what????
Bradley Bradley if you are 2 meters tall your optimal weight for the sport is around 150kg. If you are much less than that your number one priority would be weight increase.
Leonard There is no such thing as “efficiency based on various limb proportions”. Efficiency is the same for every one and you should experiment until you can achieve good efficiency with the proportions you have. Internet fuckbois need to stop talking like they have PHDs in engineering or physics. Whenever a stupid internet video gets posted words like 'leverage' get massacred. 90% of the time instead of sounding like a total dickwad the person could say something along the lines of 'it shortens the distance' instead of jackoff expressions like 'Oh, it optimises the leverage so the moment arm could shift into my mom's cunt and then my hip extension bla bla bla bla bla'...
I made my first pair of weightlifting shoes by screwing detachable heels from dress shoes to the heels of my Chris Joslin Etnies. Gives about .75” of heel. PS. I don’t lift in public
Actually another reason why he would wear the CF shoes is as you pointed out the lift on the heel is minimal and it helps him be in his optimal position for catch. I have pretty good mobility on overhead squat and I noticed that my snatches are better on 0.5 heel hight.
Hey Zach, great analysis again. Question: is there a way to get a day-pass for your workshop coming up in Texas in January? Sadly I cannot go Sunday, but would like to get the most out of Saturday.
I have a very different question. I have excellent ankle mobility, and I mostly do Olympic lifts in Reebok Nanos just fine. Would I benefit from weightlifting shoes despite having very good form for squats already? Or would I be wasting my money?
I'll admit, he's my favorite weightlifter so I had to try it. And, I actually liked it. I thought it was going to be a disaster, but the landings actually felt really solid. I definitely don't have his proportions or squatting strength though, and I still prefer my lifters, but it was a good experiment in "shoes don't make the lifter."
Hey Zack, I have been trying to get into weightlifting, I have a past on weight lifting and achieved some decent numbers on most lifts but I have never done a snatch and never even tried to power clean over 60 kg, I dont know where to start, do you know about a program for an absolute begginer like me?
Hey zack, I’ve been watching your channel for a while now and I’ve learned a good bit from watching you and other professional weight lifters but I still have problems and I was wondering if there was any way you could examine some footage of mine and point out any problems it would be greatly appreciated, btw I know your busy so whatever is cool man
Always wondered, I know leg strength doesn't necessarily MEAN stability in the bottom position of the snatch because it's not that simple. But why are his legs so shakey in the bottom position of the snatch and even the front rack hold of the clean?
Don't mean to awaken an old video but after taking a couple year hiatus off olympic weightlifting after years of training competitively, I've begun to snatch in flats. I have short legs as well and am the type of lifter to squat more high bar than low bar. I have always had an issue with my shoulders for my snatch and actually had to get surgery because of it. As described in the video: In flats, I'm able to push my shoulders behind my ears in a position supported by my upper back musculature. In heels, my torso is so upright that the bar is directly over my head and my shoulder joint feel way too anterior in the socket - this shit hurts. Something to try if your clean and jerk is 140% of your snatch.
Hey dudes and dudettes I need a combo of the highest heel with a very narrow “cut” in the shoe as my feet are very narrow. Any recommendations? I’m just starting out and while I used to have good flexibility, time as well as a few injuries mean that I’m trying to get all the height in the heel that I can...
Im kinda hoping after this video that Zack`s next video is about shoes. I have Adidas powerlift 3.1 but i wanna try nike`s Romaleos 3. Nothing wrong with metcon`s either.
I squat barefoot, or in socks, I have been walking barefoot or in minimalist shoes and working on my toe splay to improve the stability of my feet. I can even squat atg with no heel even though I am tall and have long femurs
Makes sense to me. Everyones leverages are different so it certainly is reasonable to assume that specific shoes affect everyones leverages differently.
I've noticed one thing Zack. I was watching Toshiki's snatches and I get the feeling that he is slightly less stable on the feet. In all his attempts, you can see his legs shaking a lot, something that I usually don't see him do on Olympic shoes. Do you think that this is because of the metcons or just the sheer amount of weight?
Damn I didn’t realize the metcons were CrossFit shoes. I picked some up at Dick’s and they’ve been great for squatting, since I’m pretty mobile and don’t need the heel height for hitting depth. They’re pretty good.
Man, I use to hate going to the gym cus all I knew was body building and thought it was stupid and unathletic to lift weights in general, BUT those oly lifters look like real athletes. Insanely strong, fast, athletic, great mobility, and some even look better than bodybuilders.
Whats the exact background track you are using? I sitting here and trying to find the right remix to the Great Fairy Fountain theme song, but no luck so far :(
I have such shitty ankle dorsiflexion from injuries playing rugby the shoe actually makes me. I can't physically squat to depth without a heeled shoe, the leistungs are really helping me out but im 6'1 and not built to squat at all plus shitty mobility.
Toshiki Yamamoto is very fashion conscience especially when he is in competition and all eyes are on him. I think one of the main reason he wore the crossfit shoes is simply because they went with the rest of the outfit.
One tiny mistake regarding the physics of the squat: the length of moment arms has to be considered in three dimensions. So if you externally rotate at the hips, you decrease the length of the moment arm in the sagittal plane, but you also increase the length of the moment arm in the transversal plane. Therefore the required torque to extend the hips and knees cannot be altered by rotating your femur.
Hmmh interesting thought, but I think that the net win is still greater the more you can push your knees out (less rom). But it would be nice to get a full explanation on this.
@@Edgarisftw It is certainly possible to shift forces between adductors, abductors and extensors but you cannot magicly reduce overall torque required by pushing your knees out. Otherwise a very wide sumo deadlift with your knees turned out 90° to the side would require no force applied at the hips and knees at all.
