It's cool that these shoes exist for people with wide feet, but the weird "feet content" and scaremongering around regular shoes has to stop.
Spreading nocebo and pseudoscience just to sell shoes is not cool when you have such a large platform.

Speaking as a former collegiate swimmer, it's crazy that TYR is diving into weightlifting realm! I can only speak of TYR in the market of swimming as they've been in the game for decades.
I only knew TYR as a swimming brand. My school was sponsored by TYR for a few years and we got tech suits (the tight competition suits you see in Olympics swimming). It's cool to see the company making weightlifting shoes and trainers as I now am new to olympic weightlifting myself. They make durable training suits, swimming equipment, and competition suits. They last long as stand alone swimming suits, unsure if that speaks to their ability for durable lifting shoes.
By the struck of luck, I currently have two pairs of Rom 2s. Those have worked the best for me and will continue to use them until the sole falls off. Good to say I still maintain profound mobility as I did when I swam competitively as flexibility is key in sport of swimming. Don't see myself getting anything else, but understanding that rom 2s will become obsolete as time goes on. Maybe I get the TYR shoes once both of my rom 2s wear out. Awesome video Zack!

I lifted in romaleo 2s for 4 years, adipowers for 2 years, and Reebok legacy’s for 1. I got into barefoot training and stopped weightlifting in my rom 2s because my foot muscles grew and my feet got wider. I immediately bought the tyr weightlifting shoes when they restocked and my love for weightlifting is back because I can lift without pain in my pinky and big toes (romaleos are definely more narrow). My Rom 2s are a size 11 and my tyr lifters are a 10.5, the ROM 2s were still WAY more narrow than the 10.5 tyr lifters. I even lifted in the Rom 2s without insoles for awhile just to gain any width I’m the toebox lol
I’ve been lifting in the Tyr lifters for 4 months now and have been super pleased with them. I recently tried my romaleos on again and IMMEDIATELY felt the same pain I had awhile back. Sold them the next day.
The only flaw that I can see (and this is me nitpicking to find a flaw because everything else about them are 10/10) is that the sole is a loose rubber compound. I feel that if you’re one who walks around a lot and drag your heels then you’ll start to notice wear. So as long as you don’t wear them to do any accessories or walk around too much, these will last a long time.
To each is own in their experience with both shoes, but this is mine. I’ve taken my weightlifting training way more serious now and have had so much more fun doing it.

A big part of heel height is for people with knee pain! I have patella tendonitis and can't use anything above a .75 heel without cripple walking the next week, and also heard similar for people with cartilage issues in their knees. Also if you're more hamstring dominant, you can fire them at full strength lower in the lift with a lower heel

My first weightlifting shoe (probably been oly lifting for about 3 years now) were the reebok legacy 1's. Within a year I found they kinda wore out. The straps and velcro were trashed. Picked up some Nike Rom 4's when they came out and noticed an insane difference. They felt sturdier and more firm. Those are the only 2 I ever experienced with, but I feel like the lower heel and the wider toe box from these Tyr shoes would probably work super well for someone whos not extremely specific in weightlifting.

just tried these for the first time, was using adidas adipower II before which i really love over every other oly shoe i have tried, and ive tested a lot. super light, stable, and great mobility. i had a shit session but still loved this shoe. its now my fav shoe. it just makes sense to have a shoe with a wide toe box so that your foot can operate as it evolved to with splayed toes. i do agree, like you said, that someone with ankle mobility issues might not get as much out of the shoe compared to some of the other shoes out there but just as you said about the shoe not being the limiting factor, just work on your mobility more and dont blame the shoe. this is an amazing shoe

  • @DCJayhawk57

I've had the Tyr lifters since late January and love them. Haven't had any sign of wear. I really like the wider toebox for squats. I've used them only for squat variations, no Olympic lifting (doing a powerbuilding program with EvolveAI app), but they're the best squatting shoes I've found. I've used adistar, adipower, leistung, no bull lifter and these are by far my favorite, have finally ended by quest for the perfect shoe for me.
I'm gonna dabble with some Oly lifting in the next few months so will see how they do there. My fave for Oly were the leistung, but the torsion strap broke away from the attachment on one of mine so can't tighten one shoe anymore.

They're holding up very well (although a limited window of use) but like you Zack, I just feel more stable in the bottom position with my toes spread out through a wider box compared to a narrower toe. Glad to be somewhat justified feeling this since you have had a similar experience.

When I first got my tyr lifters, I had issue with the lockdown coming from rom2s. The thing was my foot took up so much space in the roms, I didn't have to tie my laces very tight and had gotten used to it. So once I tightened my laces appropriately it felt much better. The upper is very comfortable and doesn't create any hotspots.
As for heel height, the boys at Sika Strength break down how effective heel height needs might differ between taller and shorter lifters as it is fixed across all shoe sizes.
And wide toe boxes again will benefit people with wider forefeet. There is something to be said about being comfortable when training. If you can get away with adidas lifters pain free, that's good. But some people may not.
I remember when weightlifting shoes has to be ordered off-line over the phone from a number on a singular website. It's great to see so many options now so easily available. Hopefully one day people will be able to compare them against each other in store.

I made the switch to heels shoes about 3 years ago when I lift. I'm happy I did. I also knew I needed wide shoes because I know from other shoes I buy, wider for me actually, in fact, better. I notice the difference quite a bit when I put on my running shoes, which are not wide fit. I went with Do-Win shoes and they have performed well over that span. I don't know the lifespan of these kinds of shoes though. I've done thousands of squats and pulls in them, as well as all the other supplemental and accessory lifts that weightlifters don't care about. I have noticed one thing in particular. They do not like cold, wet weather. I suspect it has to do with them being a leather construction. I noticed they started to pinch my small toe a few years ago when I was lifting in my buddies garage in the winter. Since then I've been a bit more careful to keep that from happening.

I ordered my usual size and I found they did fit better than the Reeboks, but still a bit tight and stiff.
After loosening the laces closest to the toes they felt better and after having used them for a couple months now, they're breaking in nicely and I'm really happy with them overall.
I really only use them for Olympic Lifting, and occasionally for OH squats, whereas for back squats and front squats I still prefer to go barefoot.

They have held up great and also have a wider toe box. For those on a budget who have wide-ish feet the VS Athletics are a great buy. The possible downside is they have a 1.5" heel, which is very high compared to other shoes. That's my only concern is how will I adjust to the lower heel. I'll need to work on calf mobility for sure.

I'm not gonna talk about the shoe itself but about the potential importance/impact of wide toe/barefoot type of shoes in general :
I have completely ( and I mean completely, not a millimeter off the ground ) FLAT feet. Born in the 90s, the consensus was "wear boots, tighter/stronger shoes" to fix your feet.
I ended up with chronic ankle issues, limping was part of my life since I was a teenager until I just couldn't walk closing to my 30s and covid hits so no hospital services available to help.
My wife told me to try barefoot shoes. A year and a half later of wearing them daily : Fixed my posture, fixed my walk ( I used to walk like a penguin, now my feet are parallel ), and my feet are actually strong for the first time in my life.
So for those who have the same issues I've had my WHOLE LIFE please, try barefoot shoes ( vivo brands or otherwise, I can only speak for vivos ).

But so weird for snatches, probably due to the change in heel height. I miss snatches behind me typically. All my misses now happen out front, which is super weird. So I prefer my Nike rom 2s for snatches. Yes, I'm that person that wears two different shoes to meets. I agree they do make the feet ache a bit more but I just roll out my feet after a session and it's all good.
    Tldr version 8/10 😂

My friend got a pair in the size she wears and was tight on her pinky. She sent them back ($5 to print a return label) and did 1/2 size up. Still tight on her pinky. She said she’s doing to deal with it vs being out $10 or more shipping them back and forth

I have nearly negative dorsiflexion in my right ankle due to a premature birth issue I've had like 3 surgeries I use Reebok weightlifting shoes which have a massive heel and they're still not enough I’m nearly tempted to wear a lower heel on my left side than my right but I'm afraid of the balance component

So about the difference in heel height, is there a limit to how high a heel in a shoe can be, for weightlifting? Thank you👍

I mostly buy shoes 1/2 to 1 size bigger than my feet, purely because I just can't stand my toes being cramped. I like the freedom to be able to wiggle my toes. Ive been meaning to buy a pair of wide toe box shoes for a while, gonna probably get some Vivos (i like the look of em) and maybe I'll try the TYR lift shoes.

I used these for strictly Powerlifting (Squats and Even Bench press) They have held up pretty well. Not sure how they hold up after a bunch of Snatches, Cleans, and Jerks. My only complaint is the Velcro straps are so long for some reason so I can' t get the straps/top of the shoe as tight as I'd want it.
The wide toe box + the dense bottom allows you to be extremely stable.
Also, for the white ones, the straps and some fabric parts tend to yellow a tiny bit, but thats a cosmetic issue.

Been using them for about 6 months. I dig them a lot. Jerks felt a bit wonky at first, but all good now. I also have surfer feet, so nearly any other shoe feels narrow in the toe box for me. Just got a second pair. Still don't like SquatU, tho.

I was wearing regular trainer until recently.. and a few times I left my indoor shoes home so I just went with socks... and it actually felt better... but I know shoes can help cause my ankle flexibility is trash... shock shoes are good?

I got these a few months ago when I started weightlifting (entirely motivated by watching this channel), specifically for the wide toe box, and they've been worth every penny. I had tried on my coach's Adidas before and while they were serviceable, they were very uncomfortable in the toes, and I didn't feel like I had a good connection to the ground so to speak. It'd be akin to someone who had spent his entire life running in barefoot/minimalist shoes suddenly going into something like a Nike Invincible: a strange and somewhat jarring experience (something I've also done before). This isn't to say that one couldn't eventually adapt to the new style of shoe, but the initial impression was not great.
On the other end of the spectrum, I've tried getting some wedge insoles to stick in my Vivo Barefoots, which are my all-purpose shoes, and the result was very comfortable, but expectedly unstable. Great for if I just wanted to do some technique touches with the bar if I'm too lazy to switch shoes, but nothing I'd put any real weight on.
And then there are the TYRs, which are indeed very stable, and have a relatively comfortable toe box. The toe box is wide enough that I feel like I'm able to push through my toes unhindered. For a guy with mutant swimmer feet who walks around barefoot or in barefoot shoes 99% of the day, the value of this feeling of connection to my feet that the TYRs give me cannot be understated.
