Great video, I've been making my own handmade splitters for years for finished offices/homes.
You can also use one cat5 Riser cable to make an ethernet connection and a phone connection.

Great videos. I have a question. I want to use that 4 port POE Extender switch and connect 3 cameras to my Hikvision NVR. The NVR has only 4 channels. Can it display more than 4 cameras if I use the 4 port POE extender? 3 cameras through the extender, 2 more through the NVRs POE port. Or I need an 8 or 16 channel NVR?
I'm having problems with changing my Dahua cameras IP addresses (Dahua IPC-HDW4631C-A) . I think I change everything correctly, but one camera is recognized by the NVR in the end the other is not. I do not understand what could be the problem. Could you do a full video how to change the IP address on a camera and connect it to a different Brand NVR. Thx.
You mention Mode A cables. Which cable? The yellow middle one and the others are Mode B? Or are all 5 Mode A?

Further to my previous question, I'm currently running a HIKVISION Network Cameras DS-2CD2385G1-I 4K 8MP IP POE Network camera and a HIKVISION NVR DS-7600 Series Model DS-7616NI-K2/16P. I’ve recently tried to run two cameras off one Ethernet cable using a IPCamPower Combiner Splitter Adapter but that didn’t work, they didn’t even get a signal thru them.
My question is will the Bellnet network splitter you have mentioned do the job of running a signal down one cable line and allow two cameras to work. I really need to do this as my security system has been in place for a number of years now and I don’t have access to do further wiring in the house.
I’ve also tried cheap splitter adapters and they also didn’t work, can you help.
you specified in your video that this works only for 100 base tx cameras. What if i have cameras that say they support both 100/1000 base-t . I know that gigabit can't work with 4 wires but if the camera support both 100 and gigabit , will this still work?

Yes, I think that will work :)
So are those adapters just splitting the signals and power is still passing on the same conductors because i have seen using the 4 for standard 100mb non POE connection and then then the other 4 for an additional 10/100 connection but that is not what it sounds like it sounds like all the power is on the same wires and all the data is on the same wires
That is why it works using mode A, then the power is transferred over the same wires of the data and using the splitter blocks you effectively have 2x100Mbit running over the same cables split in 4 by 4 conductors. No wires get multiplexed that way.
hey man, nice videos at all. I got a question about the proxmox machines you built. You are using Samsung 860 evo SSDs right? I often read that the 860 evo (and other consumer SSDs) are dying very fast in proxmox machines.
Can you relate to that? Because I want to upgrade my actual server, which isn't running 24/7 and it got only one 2TB WD Red, which isn't very fast :D
Later I want to build a cheap machine (maybe working 24/7 then) with a Ryzen 5 2600 CPU and would like to use there SSDs too.

I've had bad experience running Proxmox on USB sticks, even in a ZFS Mirror the sticks basically killed themselves because of the heat and writes (probably).
I think it might do some swapping of the KVM VM's to disk causes more IO then you might expect. With that said, 860 EVO's are very respectable SSD's and can handle quite some writes without an issue. Their TLC memory also isn't a problem because it's almost never a sustained load, more random bursts from the VM's.
I'll have to check what their wear level is on the machines I'm running that setup on (I have multiple) but I'm not really afraid it's going to be bad. :)

Can you use these splitters if the 2 cameras you are installing have sound?

I do not, but it complies to standard ONVIF profiles and exposes zoom through that interface whicb works perfectly for me. What else are you looking for?

Just one. It has a built in switch. There are small switches like that that are also powered from PoE. I did found some 4 port ones. Which are rather nice. They are basically 5 port switches with power from PoE.

I checked the power consumption too. One camera uses only about 5.5W power even after the night vision. So that should be enough too.
I have a question. Will PFT1300 work if connected straight to an NVR? Or do you need to go to a poe switch?
If it's passive mode A it will work, haven't tested mode B myself so don't know about that.

I have a lorex NVR with PoE function. A cat 6 cable is running to an outdoor camera and working fine. How can I install another camera close to the existing one please? I mean using the same cat6 cable to connect 2 cameras.

Poh, that really depends what kind of POE it's putting out and on which wires. Easiest would be that x4 POE in and out switch, if it can supply the power, it'll always work basically.

I'm not sure what you are asking, but all the tips in the video are centered around still providing POE power to your camera. With the passive version (the cheap blocks) just make sure you are using Mode A, it will NOT work with Mode B!

If it's official POE, yes I believe it should work. Passive POE can be more tricky.

I'm confused about the question. Both cameras can get network this way so both work at the same time and you can view, record, etc. Whatever with then like normal.

No, that's still thinking the analog way. If you have a switch with say 10 cameras on, just one cable to your NVR is fine. It's just network data packets.
tried this with hik Vision H.265+ dome cameras- but found it didnt work - they seem to require a sepperate power supply to operate which must be transmitted down some of spare brown or blue wires - is this what you mean by mode "A" cameras ?- thanks
Did you watch the POE video? That explains it, it depends on your injector type, if it's mode B, this isn't going to work. The camera should be capable of accepting both mode A and mode B, but the splitter cannot work with mode B.
Where there any issues when running these in full resolution, full fps? Like 30fps 4k resolution?
Nope, have been running a few cameras like this for a few years now at their max settings.
Hi I just watched your video and I have been trying to run two cameras on the one line but I have been using two mode "B" wired cables from the 3 way connector, can you elaborate a bit more on what the wires should be used please as I'd really like to run two cameras on one line
Look up mode A, you basically need to make sure your POE switch or injector uses the instead of Mode B

Unsure, both work well for me? I regularly use the 4 ports one with 3 cameras, no issues at all.

@@IntermitTech That's what I'm trying to say. I get the same feed on both cameras even though both appear on my monitor as two different cameras. They both have the same IP address as well. Maybe that's the issue; gonna try to change one of the IP addresses today, Thanks

Actually haven't tried it yet! Image Quality wise I'd say they look about the same now a days and it's interesting if you are upgrading an already coax installed setup. Or even if you are buying complete new it seems it could be cheaper maybe? Also it seems better suited for longer cables runs if you don't have any other infrastructure in place.
But for me, I'm into networking and have my whole home (and sites where I install) wired up with networks so running it over that network is the logical choice for me. Maybe in some sort of security business they'd like to seperate it? I don't know.
So, it might be cheaper if you are starting from scratch but for me the convenience of using my existing network and using POE can't be beat. :)
I just installed a Hikvision DS-7608NXI and tried this hookup with the cheaper splitters... no go. I called Hikvision to see if they knew what Mode their POE ports are configured as. Their tech support had no idea. Does anyone know which brands/models of NVRs run in Mode A? I would really like to run to cameras to my single drops... would be way easier than adding another line.
Probably best to get a cheap POE switch that runs Mode A for sure. Or use the 4 way spliiter on the end of the single line.

Pretty cool! I just bought a 24 port PoE switch plus the two uplink ports, and I had a heck of a time getting things to work but finally did get it, currently it’s running 6 cameras across one cat6 1gb connection. I never even considered this until I saw a brand new security install that displays 75 cameras on a single 80” television, and it’s on a single 16 port NVR. I’m puzzled how they did it, it’s all plugged into a giant Netgear switch first, and I’m guessing it’s time slicing somehow, or maybe on movement it swaps things, I really have no idea but I’m hoping to get to talk to the techs at some point, as I can’t find a thing on it on RUclips or google, although I really don’t know what to even search for. It’s all a brand new install for a new strip club, apparently lots of cameras are mandatory.
If we're talking IP cameras you need to fully let go of any 1:1 link that there light have been before with Coaxial based systems or something like that. Even if the NVR only has a single Gigabit port it can still for instance support 50 cameras no problem. It's not about the physical ports anymore but bandwidth (say 8Mbps vs 1000Mbps of gigabit) and processing capability of the NVR.
@@IntermitTech I agree, my first hurdle was only one camera would get an IP from my regular network, but the camera tool took care of that easily once I realized that’s what I needed to do. But the big problem I can’t figure out is, how do you make it display more cameras than the unit has ports? Mine will not let me add a 17th camera even manually, let alone 75.

Euhm, no, those work completely different.
With the dahua device, you also need two, one at each end?
No, with that device you connect the "in" port to a normal POE powered switch port (100Mbit or Gigabit) and then it can feed 2 100Mbit POE camera's after the Dahua POE Extender.
So you only need a single Dahua POE Extender box, it's basically a switch that gets power from POE but then again puts POE on 2 switched output ports again!

@@alinototo This should work without issue, if you are using an NVR with built-in POE ports, those ports on the back are also just in a switch. Basically you are just uplinking another switch and so more systems can communicate with each other, get an iP and run. Only problem could be that the NVR wouldn't give out more IP's then it has ports for, but I think it gives out a whole subnet range so that won't be an issue either.
When doing the active POE extenders though, make sure your NVR can deliver enough power over it's POE ports. These active extenders effectively double or even quadruple the power needed from a single POE port. If your NVR's POE ports only have a budget of 10w per port and that's also what the power supply is calculated towards, you shouldn't use this method but instead use the cable splitter way. That won't put extra load per POE port since it uses 2 ports on both ends.
@@IntermitTech if the NVR built in ports do not have sufficient voltage to power the switch could a midspan injector be used? If so would the NVR port need to be configured differently since the midspan would provide the power?

In theory it's fully software independant. So if your cameras use normal POE it should work.
Great video, really needed. I tried and it works with one camera. I have 1 single run, an adapter on each side, and all wires are run mode A. When I try connecting the second pair of wires to the camera or to the NVR, it loses connection and neither camera works. Any solutions to this?
The cables are run t568a. To clarify with the adapters on both side of single wire from NVR and to camera and one wire connected on each side of adapter, 1 camera works and has connection to NVR. Once I try connecting the second pair of wires on each side, and connect to NVR, the camera that was working stops, and neither connection works. Will appreciate any help.
That's odd, if it's mode A and you are using the adapters en the link is 100Mbit it should always just work. I do have my cables as 568B as is more generally used, but other then that?
Could be that the plugs you have are also wired for B and not A

@@IntermitTech it’s a Hikvision 24 port Poe switch. I’m not sure 🤔 about overloading. The guy that was helping to install hasn’t come back to me & I have 2 sets of them cameras fitted. I’m getting feed from 1 side of the camera.and it’s the same on both. Video from 1 side but not other.

UBNT & Mikrotik have active devices to do 24V passive (UBNT) or 48V af (Mikrotik) and allows three devices on a single cable.
Actually, in my experience, almost everything POE in Mikrotik is Passive 24v based, only their full switches (and those are recommended) offer 48v out in a standard way, but the smaller versions definitely do not. Same goes for UBNT, their full switches do 48v out in the correct way but some smaller devices are only suited for 24v passive (their own equipment).
Be careful when buying, although 24v won't fry your equipment, you'll be stuck with something that won't work either.

@@benstyles8494 That's a good one! You are correct and that one should work just fine and even comes in it's own waterproof housing and pole mounting, etc.. Could be very nice to have since you would also be able to remote power cycle the ports, etc.
Still, from my experience with Mikrotik and Ubiquiti, it's more often Passive 24v then 802.3af/at compatible, the non-pro version of that same box only takes up to 30v for instance.

I bought the cheap ones on Amazon. They only worked for me one device at a time. Notes even say this is the case. I think maybe they changed device since you purchased it.
I have the same results. Only worked for one camera at a time. I’m using Ubiquiti UniFi hardware.
Why can't I just use a regular passive RJ45 hub?
If you are talking a real HUB it will fry it's electronics because of the POE. Or with active POE it won't relay the POE at least.
If you are talking about some kind of splitting device. If it's a HUB and doubles up both 8 connections that won't end well either because pins and data signals will get multiplexed onto all pins where devices don't expect this. That is also why you use 2 boxes, the first to merge the two cables together over 1 cable and the second to unmerge them again.
That way everything stays safe and works.

As long as the PTZ camera is 100Mbit and fed using POE it should work just fine.

I've been running the ethernet splitters with 2x 4K camera for about a year now and I've used the Dahua POE Extender at several different locations, both work great!

Please always make sure of the load for each PoE output before doing this.
Well it depends on what method you use. If you use the passive splitter you are using 2 ports for 2 devices so your POE switch will see no additional load.
If you use the active splitter switch then yes, a single port will see a double load so you need to calculate that in.

Why not just make 2 keystone jacks and 1 Ethernet cable? Already has 8 pairs why not 4 pairs to each keystone jack easy and cheap lol
Although that is the same as you do here with the boxes, it's a lot harder for people that don't have the knowledge to do this themselves. Also, with having all the loose wires around it often looks kind of messy. Cost wise, unless you have decent keystones laying around, it won't make much of a difference either.
But you are right in that that is what is happening inside of the boxes. :)
p.s. I'm assuming you mean 4 keystones and 2 pairs to each keystone over 1 ethernet cable?
Intermit.Tech I meant 4 pair per keystone for 100mbps so keystones 2 keystone will use the 8 pair Ethernet cable :-P.
But your right it much more simpler for buying a premade one much simple for 4-8 camera runs at the same time!

Yes, an extra cable is always better. But what if that extra cable is going to cost you 500$ because you need to open up the wall? Or worse, it's just not possible because all the pipes in the concrete are full. Then I believe you are going to be very happy with a solution like this.

@@saullockwood4501 Yes, this is explained in the video and in my POE video, for this to work you need to use Mode A POE, not Mode B.
Having a very hard time finding these in the USA.
I don't wanna be the wise ass, but you will get interference with the twisted pairs. i switch is the correct way.
If it's possible, sure. But this method doesn't actually split pairs and running 2x 100Mbit like this has been done quite often in the past, the only difference is that POE is also running over the same data lines. Yes there are 2x2 pairs which are indeed close together but I've never seen a negative effect from it in regards to the connection. In theory there could be more interference, that is true though since it's slightly closer then 2 cables running next to each other each in their own mantle, but I've never known that to interfere either.
Ugh, this is an ugly hack!
Seriously, don't do this people! Pop a baby desktop switch at the far end if you have power there, or a POE passthru switch if you only have a couple of low power cameras. Data is way more sensitive sometimes than you may expect, whilst in traditional CCTV we got away with 4 cameras down a cat5 using baluns, this principle can't be reliably used with data.
Sorry to hear you say that, I use both ways in several setups and have been using the passive way for years.
Both ways are fully within specifications for Ethernet and each connection gets its own dedicated wire, so there really shouldn't be a problem. Using the little boxes also takes out manual error or hacky stripped out cable issues, I've seen people have problems with that because they would use long stretches of non-twisted bare wires.
So really interested to hear your experience and what the problems where!
@@IntermitTech it's within spec for 100mbit, but as camera tech moves forward the bandwidth requirements will increase. This is not complaint to 1000-Base-T also which uses all 4 pairs. Using a switch at the far end is more efficient if you need more than 2 cameras in that area also.
With converged networks these days, CCTV installers should be doing proper network training! We had some guys out a while back whose proposal included new switches & cabling to areas we already had cabled, and when we tried to talk to them about vlans we got blank looks! Ditto when we started talking about air gapped networks.
Not saying all installers are like this, but it's been my experience so far - I've dabbled in CCTV, access control etc. Over the years, mainly because of convergence of IT and building systems.

I say Ethernet cable is cheap, run more cables. I’ve wired my house where I have a number if keystones in each room all running to my single 48 port switch. So I don’t need small switches all over my house. If I can run 1 cable to a room, why 4 or 6 cables?
Just finished a PoE camera setup. Well done for now with 4 cameras and another 4 planned in a few months. Running Ethernet is generally not hard.
I get there are ways to cheat, if you want to call it that. I’d rather be more future proof.
Its not an ugly hack these devices come in handy when a run is complicated and long most Ip systems use 100mbits anyways.

I still think it's more of a hack. Sure it works fine now. But it's not future proof. If you can run 1 cable, it's not much harder to run 1, 2, 3, or more cables at the same time. I know as I wired my house up and ran multi cables to each room to have a number of keystones to plug into and have 1 large central switch. In this case a 48 port switch. Now I've started on my PoE security camera setup and in running more cables. Each camera has their own Ethernet cables and all end up at my new NVR. Yes, they don't use all that much bandwith, but to me still a hack otherwise. If 1 cable fails, you may end up losing 2 camera's. Again, cable is cheap. If you can pull 1 cable, you can just as easily pull 2 or more at once. I pulled a bunch of cables at work for a nice re new Mesh WiFi setup. Now have WiFi throughout the factory including inside the freezers. We have plans to toss the whole analog camera system and install a new PoE system to replace them all and run a bunch more. Again, each camera will have its own cable. It's going to be a whole lot more wiring. It'll require a boom lift to do all the outside cameras. All the walls are brick. Fun, fun!!!
