    In this video I reveal the secrets of my network setup. I show the cameras installed around my property and explain all of the different pieces of hardware making up my surveillance system. I talk about my messy network room and my plans to install a proper server rack for better cable management. I draw a diagram to better explain network layout and how my continuous video feed is saved locally and uploaded to the cloud. For each piece of hardware I explain its purpose and then why it was selected. I use a modem, router, switch, POE switch, dedicated NVR running BlueIris and a UPS to protect it all.

    Nice video. I'm a beginner, but I'm learning about this stuff, from ipcamtalk forum. I went, with Dahua turret cameras(all metal), mostly HDW5231RZ cameras, which are international versions, so firmware can be upgraded, purchased from EmpireTech, or Bec Technology(same company but two different names, his name is Andy, you can find him on Aliexpress, or Amazon as well).He is a nice guy, ships DHL and supports his stuff, for one year. Dome cameras, will have haziness issues from the sunlight(they are plastic) and also IR reflections. These cameras are only 2MP Starlight cameras, but they have a much bigger sensor, than 3-4MP cameras.

    Nice setup, except for that data closet ;) We all have the best of intentions. When I built my house 17 years ago I began running CAT5e to every room, and since I hadn't decided how I was going to design my basement family room yet, i tucked a 2U rack into the ceiling leaving extra coils of cable to allow me to move it to the real data closet I would eventually build. 17 years and still no data closet, so I'm right there with you with lacking wire management, although mine is all stuck up in a ceiling tile. I'm currently researching systems to build my own home security camera system. I'm curious if BlueIris has a feature to allow you to search for a specific area of a camera's view to find out when an object was moved or stolen. I think it was D-Link's now discontinued Business solution that had this ability. For instance if a woman sits her pocketbook on a counter and returns to find it missing, you could enter the search screen and put a box around the location on the counter where the pocketbook sat, then it would search all recorded video to find out when the video content of that box changed, which would quickly and easily allow you to find out who stole the pocketbook, or if it was moved by anyone, and where it was moved to, without having to watch a bunch of recorded video in real time to see when it was moved. This is a very valuable, and timesaving feature, that I believe should be part of any VMS (video management system). I currently manage a very large community college's system of over 400 cameras using Verint VMS, and as far as I know they don't include this feature either, and their product is by no means cheap enough to use for a home security system. Thanks for any information you have, and can share.

    Hi, I wanted to ask it appears you were able to do away with a Hikvision intergrated NVR box altogether with the use of a dedicated PC with 3rd party software and POE switch ?. I was initially looking at simply adding a 8ch NVR to my existing Non POE switch and networking it in this way.

    If you are not home and there is a storm or a power outage, power is out for a couple of hours, computer shuts down after draining the ups battery. Then Blue Iris stops recording? How do you turn on your pc remotely and start BI again when power comes back? Will it record while the computer is off? have you ran into that problem?

      Have you experimented with Digital Watchdog at all? They have some very feature rich NVR's. But they have a different software platform than Hikvision and all the Hik copycats. I wonder if I can mix the two cameras into my NVR well. You can get a decent rack for a few hundred. I like how you said you only notice them if you are a burglar or a camera junky! I know a lot of the wireless cams are cheesy, however I have built a couple wireless bridges and then install a poe cam at the other end and it has always worked beautifully. Still need power / solar.

      I use a free (non commercial) version of TeamViewer. It's like remote desktop but no need to worry about dynamic IP addresses changing every few days. You are basically logging into your computer with your phone. The second option is to open up ports on your router to access the cameras or your NVR. You can access the cameras individually or your recording software. You'll need to setup Port Forwarding on your router and keep an eye on your ip address and if it changes frequently... maybe use a DNS service or ask your ISP for a static ip address. Hope this helps!

    Very nice setup, mine is similar. Have you thought about integrating passive infrared sensors with arduino or raspberry pi to trigger camera recordings? Do you use dropbox or google drive for cloud storage? If you use gmail, did you set it up to use its own secure password ? Do you use stunnel for https?
    Why did you chose a POE switch that is not Gigabit? The camera feeds are not that fast, but seems like it would transfer data from multiple cameras more efficiently if it were Gigabit.
    Infrared night vision and facial recognition is very challenging.
    Thanks for the video.

      Thanks for the comment and questions. No, I haven't considered adding passive infrared sensors at this point, but that sounds fun! No, I do not use cloud storage at the moment, everything is recorded in house as my LTE ISP cannot handle the bandwidth. No, I don't use gmail, nor have I gotten into https yet. I just updated my PoE switch to a managed 48 port Netgear gigabit one (video coming soon, I hope). Thanks again!

    Thanks for this great video and sharing your own setup, which looks great! I've noticed that one of the three dome cameras which you installed under the soffit over the front door is mounted on a bracket but the other two cameras are not. When does a camera need such a bracket and when does it not need one?

    • @HomeTechDIY
      @HomeTechDIY  2 года назад

      At 0:31 the camera on the right has an angled bracket to it can point towards the garage door and keep its landscape orientation. Without the bracket, the camera doesn't have the doors in frame and too much of the wall directly across from the post. The camera on the left with the wall mount bracket (amzn.to/3JLCbqW) requires the bracket in order to get a landscape view of the driveway or down the side of my house. This camera only has 2 axis and when it's attached to a wall, the image will be landscape if the lens is pointed straight out (perpendicular to the wall). When the lens is turned to one side or the other, the orientation will rotate to portrait. When I use the bracket, I can swivel the lens in any direction and it will always be landscape. The bracket also helps me extend around the down spout so it's not in the picture. Hope this helps.

    This is a great description of the physical network. You also need to consider the virtual network.....especially when possibly putting on grey market cams on the network. I'd suggest a separate VLAN for the camera network....so it's virtually segregated from your home network and all of the devices connected to it. Also, get a Firewall to ensure you're not getting hacked from the outside or between the VLANs. Here's a cheap one - firewalla red on Amazon. If you want a little beefier version, join their kickstarter for blue. The FW sits off the router. I get concerned with Command & Control (C&C) sending data back to China. One big, flat network with devices, alexa, NVR, and cams all sharing the same space can be pretty dangerous. VLANs aren't bullet proof, but better than nothing. If you really want protection, set up a L3 segment for the cameras/nvr.

    Have you checked out ivideon server? I used to use Zoneminder as my DVR, which was pretty great, but there were issues with keeping it updated and running, and it's motion detection algorithms were missing a lot of important stuff while catching a lot of extraneous stuff, like tree leaves, grass and shadows. Ivideon has much better algorithms. Plus, it's free if you don't use their cloud services, and you can scale up to unlimited number of servers and cameras. Right now, I am running ivideon on a Nettop nT-i1000 (I have a second one in the ready) with 7 cameras, with plans to get 5 HD PTZ cameras this year and set them up on my other nT-i1000.

    • @tjblaik9282
      @tjblaik9282 5 лет назад

      Curious - what cams are you running with ivideon? Seems like a small list but they state any camera that supports RTSP works. Is that how you're doing it? I'm a little worried about the horsepower of the server when using HD, 5MP+ cams. BI suggests i7-7000s for "numerous" cameras and 5MP to 4k. I can't find any recommended server specs on their support site.

Lens calculators work with 1/2 or 1/3'' sensor sizes but camera like DS-2CD2085FWD-I are equipped with 1/2.5''. I guesss a 4mm lens would be fine. any feedback would be much appreciated.

    However, the video is very informative yet I think you missed something.. it's about the cost. How much did this stuff, the whole enchilada, cost in total.. My best guesstimate is about 2 to 3 thousand US dollar?
    ...and looking at your other videos, you installed it all yourself, but how much time did you need to finish such a job?

    • @HomeTechDIY
      @HomeTechDIY  6 лет назад +3

      Thanks for the nice comments!! It was a few thousand US for sure. The NVR was about a thousand alone and about 1-2 hundred per camera. I had a couple of garbage systems before this one and that cost a lot too. The time can be measured in weeks and weeks. The research first and the experimenting with camera settings and trying different NVR software... Each install took at least 1-3 hours and running wires in wall... yeah... hours and hours... it was a lot of work. I didn't talk too much about price since I bought a lot from the grey market for cheap and I didn't want to encourage that too much as it comes with a risk. I wouldn't want to feel responsible with someone getting ripped off with a fake or no warranty. Hope this helps!

    Hi,
    Great job and very informative👍🏽
    Questions:
    Would normal NVR from amazon be less powerful then the custom one you have made?
    I order a Amcrest NVR Poe 8 channel for my home. But it is small box and I think it would over heat as I did not see any fan with normal NRV as a standard.
    Camera wise I ordered some different 4mp to 5mp SV3C and hivision camera. Quality wise I think both are still not that great. I only been testing in my living room. But pictures are not very clear for a POE 4mp or 5mp cameras. I though it would be the NVR at fault, so I connected straight to the cameras but still not that clear.
    What the point of cameras if they can get the thief face or license plate numbers. Or easy play back to quickly pull a video.
    Please advise on which system to get for 8 channel Poe for my home.

      Thanks for watching! I'm not sure of the processing power of your NRV but it seems like a nice compact unit. I would keep an eye on the temperature to ensure it doesn't heat up too much. For the Hikvision camera, can you login to the camera and see what the quality/resolution settings are? Also, check the quality setting for the main stream and sub stream (under video tab), and then make sure the NVR is pulling from the main stream. Also, a 2.8 camera is very wide and good for tight areas, like a porch or small room, so you may not capture faces if you use this in a wide space. Hope this helps.

      If you will have more than 8 PoE devices, then I'd get the GS116LP .

    I used to make these systems for high security industry. We used GeoVision. But FFwd a decade+, and I think I am going to get the HIKV 7616 as you have and run the BlueIris software(IF the HIKVision supports H265+)
    I actually still have 2 16ch GeoVision capture cards that are for DVR builds, but perhaps the tech is just dated. I still would prefer building my own system, but not sure who sells NVR H.265+ cards that go into a U2 rack style computer case?
    Any suggestions, and thoughts? My main purpose is to stay completely OFF the cloud, and not have to use a 3rd party web interface to access my cameras. I take privacy more serious than most, and I dont think I should need to trust any company with my content.
    Btw, Your videos are made as if targeted for me :-) We have quite the commonality..I guess perhaps not uncommon for techies :-) Cheers!

      Hey Phil! I have 2 systems recording footage; a Hikvision NVR and a PC running BlueIris. I don't need 2 of them recording... that's more for my own education. BI cannot run on an NVR. Not sure about capturing 265+. I actually only use 264 or 265. I too am off the cloud... trust issues here too.

      @@HomeTechDIY Thanks for getting back!
      Ok, that makes more sense seeing multiple videos with different info.
      (I thought you switched over to one over the other at some point).
      So what capture card are you using in the PC version?
      (I guess you are using the POE switch to power those POE cameras? But with what capture card? What is managing the video feeds?)
      I am new to H265, and noticed that there is a "H265+" version on one of the cameras you reviewd (the latest video with the HIK 4K bullet review). Just want to be sure a H265 NVR or a capture card with H265 can handle H265+

    @ 1:05 after the router you said "Nas'" ? what exactly is that?

    • @HomeTechDIY
      @HomeTechDIY  6 лет назад

      NAS is "Network Attached Storage". It's 1 or more hard drives attached to your network that anyone on your network can access. It's like a shared drive but only for your network.

      Most of my cameras were purchased from AliExpress, but they are the Chinese "grey" models and the firmware isn't very upgradable. Good thing, the firmware is pretty solid and does not need changing.

    Don't forget passive systems. Infrared door/driveway chimes, dowels on windows, door jamb locks not able to open from outside and finally something SO SIMPLE. An overhead door bell analog old school style. *Ding ding* no false alarm there. No battery, wifi, or glitch's. Door is open period even if the power goes out and they cut the wires.
    *Ding ding.* 😉 Then get a squeak toy under the mat your dog has been trained to bark for. He steps on it and my dog will go nuts at the sound.
    Many layer security is the best security. IF you get through all these in my home, plus the dog you'll be dead.

    se ven pocos vídeos mostrando la cámara en la oscuridad como emiten ese haz de luz roja (ir led) lo cual hace la cámara totalmente detectable y siendo fácil de inutilizar no entiendo porque no aplican leds IR de 940nm
    .
    Para mi las cámaras en cuestión fallan en que no dispone de IRled de 940nm por lo que e la oscuridad la cámara será bastante llamativa y accesible (emite una serie de luces rojas) pudiéndola destrozar o robar o inutilizarla. Las cámaras deberían llevar un sistema de IRleds que en la oscuridad no se iluminasen en el mercado ya hay modelos que utilizan leds de 940nm los cuales no emiten ningún tipo de luz en la oscuridad y por tanto hace que las cámaras pasen mejor desapercibidas, es importante que dispongan de WDR, IRCUT, P2P, codec H.265 o H.265+, conexión POE, wifi , aspectos como sensor PIR, PTZ, son cuestiones a valorar y que mejoran bastante la seguridad

    • @Pro1er
      @Pro1er 4 года назад

      I agree with using 940nm LEDs but I haven't found a camera that uses them. However, the big disadvantage of using 940mn LEDs is that the camera's sensor doesn't see them very well and they do not project very far. You also need a fast lens and light sensitive sensor which adds to the cost of the camera. Also, 940nm LEDs don't work well with zoom lenses because of projection distance and lens aperture. If you are capturing video at close distances then 940nm is the way to go, otherwise you will need IR LEDs in the visible spectrum. If you don't need live view and push notifications, you can always use a trail camera with 940nm LEDs.

    Can’t believe how much you spent for a switch. If you want a Poe switch you can get a 48p 100/1000 poe for under $100 on eBay

    • @HomeTechDIY

      Yeah, $180CAD for a 10/100 PoE switch in 2017. I'm still using it 4 years later for lower MP cameras so I don't hit the 100 mark. It's still performing perfectly! I have purchased a few pizza boxes on eBay (and kijiji) in the past with intermittent luck. My favorite PoE switch which I purchased new is the GS752TP. Only $600 and it's a beast!! Keep an eye out for it in future videos.
