I've used Blue Iris for years and I just recently installed DW Spectrum version of NX Witness so I can offer my perspective here. I must say so far that NX Witness is so much easier to use and much more of a polished product. Yes it costs more but my gosh you'll easily make up for that in the hours of work you would spend setting up BI. It immediately found my 14 cameras on my network through the ONVIF protocol and I was up and running in no time. Getting my cams set up with BI involved searching out hobbyist web sites and reading hundreds of posts looking for answers. With NX Witness you don't even need a license to start using it with live views. The license is only needed if you want to record the video streams. You can even use your mobile app for remote viewing without a license. It's easy to try everything out for free without even giving your CC info. Just download their software from their website. Here's some of the great features of NX Witness I've found so far:
    - NX Witness doesn't need port forwarding, it connects through the cloud for free - BI requires port forwarding or a VPN, both of which are beyond the capabilities of the average consumer.
    - NX Witness has a free client app which you can use locally or remotely. BI has a hobbyist built web client UI3 that is unreliable at best.
    - NX Witness mobile app is free. BI mobile app is $10. The NX Witness mobile app is much better too.
    - NX Witness server starts up on my Windows PC automatically without me even logging in. I still haven't figured out how to make that happen with BI.
    - NX Witness has tabs that you can click on to see many different customization views. BI is like the soup nazi from Seinfeld, take the view we give you or leave!
    - NX Witness has intelligent motion search. BI doesn't.
    - NX Witness installation is like setting up a home PC. BI feels more like setting up a 1970's era mainframe.

Thank you for your comment and I couldn't agree more, I pinned it even! Because this is exactly why I also fell in love with Nx Witness very quickly after trying so much other stuff. No it's not the cheapest out there but it makes up for that in a lot of ways and since they are lifetime licenses, over time the cost isn't actually that high, especially if you compare it against Nest or other monthly cloud subscriptions! Features such as the intelligent area motion search also have become invaluable for me! No more scrubbing through hours of footage, even just motion triggered footage. "When did this car leave" *draws rectangle* 5 seconds pass "ah, ok". DONE!

@@IntermitTech Yes! That new motion search is invaluable. I've wasted so much time scrubbing footage in BI while looking for something. Another feature I really love is the ability to record 24/7 in lo-res then during an event record in hi-res. Very nice feature! That will save me loads of disc space.

I'm running Blue Iris on a Server 2012 VM. I actually wanted a Linux solution too, because all my other VMs are running Linux as well, and Linux just simply works and it uses next to no resources, but for Blue Iris i made an exception. Running Server 2012 in a VM with 2 vCores and 4GB RAM, handles 3 1440p cameras just fine with only 10% CPU utilization! The mobile app is great as well, the app does cost €10 though.

First and foremost: thanks for a thorough and detailed video to this VMS software! I have followed your channel for quite a while and think it is great the stuff you are doing with the integrations for Home Assistant!
After watching this review a month ago I installed the trial and can only confirm your positive assessment. I have tried several open source/linux platforms and am recently using Bluecherry, which is also good but lacks an app and some of the nice search features which Nx Witness offeres. I am at the point I would like to BUY this software, so I logged in to my Nx Optix account online and sent a purchase request, they forwarded me to a local reseller here in Germany (Allnet) which then responded that they don't sell to end-users.....what kind of a sales model is that?? Why such a complicated process through a chain to purchase a license to digitally activate software? In the end, it seems that the private consumer isn't a customer of value.
Additionally, from what I have gathered, the approximate cost for a 4-License starter pack for Nx Witness is about 350€. I found 2 price listings online from the US for Digital Watchdog (around 284 USD)....a 100€ price difference for more or less the same software???
Of course these are frustrations unrelated to your review, and I would again like to say that I think your videos are great and I really appreciate you taking the time to go over such things in great detail.

It is shame with the Shinobi. It had too much stuff written in JavaScript I think and can't easily access stuff like hardware accelerated decoding. If they use some native code or maybe WebAssembly , plus improve performance it could do better. Nx witness looks really good from their materials. Not a fun of non open source stuff, but if you have 30-50 cameras and just want things to work good and have somebody to call if it breaks , then nx witness looks like a good choice.

You show the motion / object tracking on the desktop interface, dose it do the same on mobile app? I am currently using BlueIris and like how it break down the clips to show the live view and clips on motion. I got Ring door bind the video loading too slow. I am only using 6x1080 10x720 10x480 cameras. Nice to see there is something better for high resolution, but if they don't post the price on website it is most likely, they know is priced too high. As the over comments said about €475 for 8 cameras.

Not exactly sure what you are trying to ask, but currently motion search is not available on the mobile client, they do have it on the road map I believe (or least looking back at motion events).
As for the price, since it's not a subscription I still think it's fair, but it's not cheap compared to free or under a 100$ for any amount of cams, that is correct.
For me the interface and features currently available and in the future (can't wait for Dahua in camera analytics integration!) are worth it.

This looks like a really great product but the price tag just puts it way beyond what I would consider a typical consumer's reach.. I would pitch this to our clients we support all day but if I could just pay one flat fee for a ton of cameras like blue iris, that'd be way more appealing to the average home user who isn't really monitoring their feeds unless something happens.
NX need to cut their price in half and I'd jump on it. My Hikvision NVR is old and pretty bad (only IE support for web viewing now) but I only need it to pull footage so I personally have a hard time justifying the high price of NX. :/
I guess I'm just not in their target client demographic.

    • @IntermitTech
      @IntermitTech  5 лет назад

I kind of get your drift, but I believe there is more to consider.
Nx for instance is a lifetime license where with Blue Iris you pay per year. If you have a lot of cameras Blue Iris will stay cheaper for a long time but with like 4 cameras and an Nx starter pack you've paid the same after a couple of years, you just need to pay it up front.
Comparing Nx it to native cloud offerings such as Nest cameras and such, there is no competition, those kind of solutions are 4x or more over a period of 5 years even if you include the hardware to run it on.
So it really depends what you compare it with. Blue Iris is ok, but I personally happily paid for Nx for the way it works and the ease of use and low resource utilization that comes with it. Simple VM with 2 logical cores on a bare minimum Linux install is more then enough to run my 10x 8MP at home where with Blue Iris, if you want to use advanced functionality you need a dedicated machine almost. I also don't like Windows for my services, especially if I need to RDP in to do management and other functions.
But it really depends on your situation, if you just want to record some cameras, Blue Iris or even a Synology NAS will do just fine, but if you want to look at them with multiple clients for instance (I use it on mobile and tablet too, just like my GF) Nx starts to make a lot more sense, at least for me.

    • @FastRedPonyCar
      @FastRedPonyCar 5 лет назад

@@IntermitTech Yeah right now, I have 3 hikvisions outside and an older model NVR that they are no longer updating the firmware on (their more recent ones have a new firmware that no longer requires a web browser plugin) and I also have 7 Wyze V2's in the house so paying per-camera, especially when the license per-camera is $180 on top of the 4 camera starter pack for $500 puts me at $1400.
This is why people pay subscription fees. I would gladly pay $15/month if they would essentially rent out their NX1 to you like a cable TV provider where you keep that in your house and connect 5~10 cameras with no cloud storage. Add a week of cloud storage for an extra $10 or so. Add 10 more camera licenses for another $10 and all of a sudden, you've got a solid revenue coming in.
I get why they wouldn't want to go that route with their business model but for us (I'm a consultant for an IT MSP) it's really easy for us to sell clients Unifi security camera systems as a monthly service (we cover install, management and work with them/police in the event that footage needs to be retrieved, etc) vs an up front full price cost. We got only 1 client that paid for the system up front but 8 or 9 more happily paying a monthly "Security systems" fee that we have already far surpassed the break even point with.

      @IntermitTech  5 лет назад

Haven't tried it or looked at it but I'm looking at very different numbers? I want to record at least 14 days of footage, but let's get that down to 10 days, and assume we're not going to have to invest in any local storage, that would mean I would have to pay 99$ a year per camera. With 10 cameras that's 1000$ a year! That's enough to pay for NX Witness, the Hardware it runs on and add a disk to that to store the 14 days. But NX Witness doesn't cost anything the second, third or any other year!
And then I haven't even looked at comparing features or how well it handles 8MP cameras and/or motion detection/search. For instance, my internet line isn't even capable of streaming all my cameras to the internet at the same time so.... :S
I'm not easily convinced by these cloud online offerings and really hate subscriptions, it's almost always more expensive and even worse in my case I have hardware running anyway so wouldn't have to make additional costs for it. I understand the cloud proposition though and if my parents wanted one camera I'd probably get them a nest, but if you take your cameras even somewhat seriously, those options quickly go out of the window IMHO.

Nx Witness is sold through a channel of security surveillance and IT Resellers because an IP video system requires many other 3rd party devices (networking equipment, cameras, power supplies, mounts, etc) and those typically come through the same reseller channel. That being said - we feel your pain. IP cameras and good networking gear are now available via Amazon and other online platforms and so there is a new emerging market - especially home automation / IoT tinkerers - who wants direct support. While it's fine to have that bias I disagree with immediately discounting Windows solutions out of the gate. At least that seems to be the path you took. I was also looking for your review of each of the packages you didn't choose, or a good comparison.
On another note you should put the name of the product you are discussing on screen when you have other text such as the pros/cons. It was difficult to know what product you were talking about.
That said the cost of the NX Witness is crazy for a homeowner. Close to $600 US for 8 cameras is crazy when BI is available for $50-60 dollars and will run on a very inexpensive desktop system. No cloud required. I'm not an expert in these products by any means but it just seems your perspective might be a bit skewed.
Just expecting more from this video that actually shares the pros/cons of each rather than jumping right to product you "recommend". Makes it seem more like an advertisement than a guide.

I appreciate your comment, I actually don't mind a bit of discussion or different thoughts! :)
This video was the culmination of basically a frustrating 2 months to find NVR software that would meet the critias I mentioned in the video. So you are correct, this was not a pro/con video about several NVR's rather my journey and what my end result has become and why but very specific for my situation and wishes.
About some of your comments: I have a lot of experience of managing Windows and Linux servers, running inside of a VM it's just a given fact that Windows requires at least 2GB memory of it's own on top of what your program needs. With a Linux server we're talking several hundred MB, not Gigabytes. Hence the fact my NVR VM is running with only 1536MB memory allocated to it, below what I would consider the minimal amount for windows. Managing updates for all my Linux boxes is a lot easier then my stand-alone Windows servers too, and we're also not looking at license costs because officially you would need to add at least 100$ to the cost of Blue Iris because of that. With that I'm not saying I hate Windows or would never use it, but as an operating system for small services like this, in my opinion it's not the best choice and a minimal Linux install is.
The cost for NX Witness is high from a home user perspective, in that you are right. But it's also very subjective, after my search and as mentioned in the video, my disappointment with what is available, I was happy to pay for the features NX Witness has and how well it works. I'm also not buying 50$ cameras but 4K (8MP) cameras of around ~200$ a piece. And compared to what an "average user" will pay in for instance Nest fee's, suddenly it doesn't look all that expensive at all. So it really depends what you compare it with in my opinion.
So in that regard, I paid cold hard cash for those licenses and Network Optix/NX Witness has given me nothing. They are however a company which is involved with their users and I do maintain contact with them and they even comment on my videos as can be seen, which I appreciate a whole lot! :D
p.s. The NX Witness cloud is a free feature and not a "subscription". Their licenses are lifetime licenses and as mentioned in the video, the cloud feature only enables easy connecting from outside of your home.

@@IntermitTech Really appreciate your reply as well. :) Sometimes the "Internetz" can be a harsh place. That said....
One of my issues with the entire video security "community" is that for those willing to venture beyond the consumer plug and play stuff it's a daunting task. Most of those will have little to no Linux experience let alone VM experience. Windows is familiar and familiar = safe for most consumers who will need to support their own install. Looking at cost of ownership I disagree that Windows is more expensive. I'm sure you've ventured onto the IP Cam Talk forums and there's lots of posts there about acquiring $200ish systems off ebay that can easily handle an 8 camera system, for example. Most would already come with a Windows license.
The other thing about the VM approach is that the idea that it is "free" is very misleading. Remember you aren't talking about users with VM systems already running in a home server lab... they would need hardware for the base system regardless. So for pretty much all it's not hardware cost free. I bet that that VAST majority of those users don't have any sort of dedicated system for anything and it would be a mistake to suggest they use their "home office" PC for an NVR since they will end up turning it off and on.
So my point I think is that if we assume the most likely target market they will need new hardware + new software. The costs are essentially going to be the same, more likely significantly less to build a BI system that can easily run 8-12 cameras than to do the same with NX Witness. I haven't had a chance to test out NX Witness and frankly given their shady approach to marketing the product (they intentionally hide their pricing and resellers) I have no interest in doing so.
Just my opinion. I do appreciate your perspective though and your videos have been helpful. I just bought a new home and am about to add about 6 cameras to my existing 6 (all need installed still) and I am looking at the Dahuas you reviewed in another video previously. The 5 series ones I think they were.
Lastly I would really like to see a comparison of say NX Witness vs BI from your perspective if you were every up to doing so. If you never really tested BI then of course disregard this but I'm curious of how it compares feature wise. I'm still learning BI currently.

@@santiagodraco It seems my first attempt at a reply actually didn't get posted... let me try this again.
I think we're actually not to far off with agreeing with each other. My videos are most often for the slightly more advanced user. They often spawn from the "Hey, you know about computers and cameras, I want something good and don't want to pay monthly to Nest or whatever, what would you advise?" kinds of questions. So it's for users who go online and do read guides, watch videos and maybe look at forums on how to setup stuff. Not the "open box, plug in micro-usb, start app, connect to wifi, pay here, done" type of people, enough videos with (in my opinion) useless comparisons between products the video shooter has no experience with whatsoever out there for those kind of products.
And although I understand what you are saying, that you can get cheap hardware from somewhere which runs Windows already and just run the NVR software on there, that to me is a very "5 year ago" method of doing things. I run multiple things in my house such as all my Lighting, Domotica, Storage, NAS, etc.. and don't want seperate boxes for all of that. So I've moved to VMware and some RAID storage a long time ago and never looked back, the idea of having to service an old Windows machine somewhere in the corner is horrible for me. ;)
Still, I can understand people who have no other interest in IT that being a thing to do but then I'd probably advise them just to get a hardware NVR box from Dahua or run a Synology. Just most of the people I see around me now a days have at least a NAS, maybe a Raspberry Pi somewhere and a lot of IT people at least have a simple Proxmox/VMware box in the house. To me it makes more sense to utilize those resources then to run another machine.
So it's mostly about perspective I think. And you are right that this isn't a beginners guide video but rather a "I've got this shitty foscam for a while now, but I'd like more" type of video. I started like that and grew into more myself and for me, NX Witness was a god sent after how crappy most other software handles 8MP cameras. As I said in the video, right now it's using about 10% to 15% of a simple i5 box with no hardware GPU or anything.
I'll admit that although I did install Blue Iris I could have looked longer at it but the initial setup and performance really didn't do it for me. That combined with the Windows fact, put me off before I gave it a fair chance maybe.
My previous NVR (Genius Vision) I ran for years ran on Windows and honestly, it was a bitch to maintain. I was running 3 of these systems for the last a few years and the amount of trouble Windows from updates alone or it shitting it's own C drive or other random Windows problems I had between these 3 systems was horrible. I've switched over to Linux with NX Witness and the way it's all managed and the simplicity of managing several servers or of the Linux systems beneath them (at least for me) has been awesome and in my opinion, well worth the money. But again, this is very situation dependant, I'm VERY happy with NX Witness
I'll try and install Blue Iris in the future again and look past the Windows part a bit. I also never meant to say BI is shit, i just think NX Witness is great for what it does and was actually so excited about it and how it works that I created these videos about it. ;)

@@santiagodraco thank you for your comments. I will discuss your comment internally to see if there is a way to address this to satisfy more users. Regarding pricing, there is nothing shady; the MSRP is $150,00 per camera and is sold through our distribution channel throughout the world which can be found at our website.
We know there are plenty of cheaper options, but we don't aim for being the cheapest, we aim for the best user experience and being the most open platform so any developer can create their own solutions with Nx. Considering this, we offer really competitive pricing.
The reason that we do not offer direct sales is that the global transaction fees do not justify small orders and also it would multiply the number of customers we need to offer direct support which we simply aren't equipped for.
All our distributors have had intensive training by us and are capable of offering 1st and 2nd tier support in their customers own timezone and own language. For 3rd tier support we have a dedicated support team and our developers available to offer the best support in the market, and absolutely for free.
Feel free to reach out to me directly via amsterdam@networkoptix.com to continue the conversation if there are still questions to be answered. Or post them here of course.
