FILTHY Engine Bay Detail on a 32 Year Old Mazda Miata | Like NEW Again!

- The Detailing restoration of the MX-5 Mazda Miata Begins! In today's video, we transform this 32 year old engine bay back to its former glory. After sitting under a tree for years, this engine was FILTHY and needed a DEEP CLEAN! So join me as we remove leaves, twigs, grease, dirt and more!
While I still have no idea what to do with this car, I know it's my duty to at least detail it back to life. In my previous video, I mention how this 1991 NA Mazda Miata fell into my hands and i's my job to figure out what's done with it. While the entire car is FILTHY and needs a detailing transformation, I thought starting with detailing the engine bay would get me on the right track. I've made several videos on engine bay detailing and deep cleaning, but this is the first car to sit under a tree that I've done. By the end, you would never know this Miata was ever exposed to the elements! Crazy results.
I began the detail with removing as many leaves and twigs as I could by hand. From there, I vacuumed up the remaining leaves, dirt, sand, and even a straw. I then bagged the intake to prevent water from getting into it. The engine was then treated with an all purpose cleaner and iron removing wheel cleaner. This combo tends to break down grease, oil, and lift dirt from the surface. The hood underside was scrubbed, and then the bay was carefully sprayed with a pressure washer. The bay was then cleaned with brushes and more all purpose cleaner. Unfortunately, some of the scrubbing shots were lost on the go pro, but trust me when I say that I scrubbed a LOT.
Once the engine bay was scrubbed and deep cleaned, I rinsed the bay, and then dressed it with Koch Chemie Motorplast. This is the cherry on top to restore the black hoses, plastics, and give the paint a nice glow! Overall, this engine had a huge transformation and it's restored to a MUCH better state. SO hopefully you guys enjoyed the process as well!

I sometimes really forgot how old these cars are. 32 years old is crazy when you think about it. When I think of the 90s I think that’s like 20 years ago

You know what would make that engine bay pop? Pull the valve cover, clean it up really nicely, and either spray it with aluminum colored paint (or whatever color you'd like), or just leave it after you've got it really clean, and then sand the letters afterwards.

@@n1kk332Miata battery is in the trunk, is recommend covering the battery and whatever other components you're worried about with plastic bags

I've been wanting one of these for so long but could never afford one, especially with being senior in high school. All of the ones in my area are riced out too. Poor miatas getting ruined so its nice seeing a stock one!

One thing I'd recommend. Instead of dressing all rubber hoses and black plastic, spray it down with silicone spray. Like a generous amount and let it sit for a couple of days until it flashes off by itself. The results are amazing and last a very long time. Also it restores the rubber and plastic and keeps it soft
Its crazy how similar our garages are turning out, I own a DC5R and an NA mx5 too! As an mx5 owner I definitely suggest loosening the front fenders to clear all the trapped dirt and leaves, as well as checking your rain rail drains. Take care!

LOOKS GREAT - I really want to get this done on my NA.
With a compressor and blowing tip, you can get all those leaves and things out there much faster, just roll the car outside and the debris flies out - much faster than vacuuming.
Normally I would have absolutely have done this. But it was a super windy day and I didn’t want it all blowing back into my garage lol
Seen this mentioned a few times black wrinkle coat the valve cover and respray the intake metallic it's gonna look flawless then!

The engine bay looks great. I've always heard that it isn't good to use a pressure washer under there. Weren't you worried about the plugs, fuse box, etc.?

I have a painted valve cover and got some spray in the spark plug and got a miss fire on the way home. I wound up changing the spark plugs in the chikfila parking lot

Clean that intake filter with K&N filter cleaner thoroughly dry and

Every video of Anthony im somewhat connected to what happened in my car. Just like today, bought coilovers 4 my ek hatch, but my engine blew up. Even it needs a fvck ton of work I can't give up on life.

Can you just use the karcher on the engine with normal water and it doesnt break? what are the risks? Because i want to do it on mine but i'm scared coz i'm no big mechanic haha

That k&n filter is dry as a bone, get some oil on it. They dont filter well when dry

After a year.. i wonder how all those electrical connectors are fairing after being blasted by HP water constantly.. I would be checking for hidden corrosion. you really should be covering them or at least coat them with Vaseline were the wires go in.. especially your coil packs and plug connectors.. I came out good but i hope you didn't cause more damage you cant see.

Is there any benefits to use magic wheel cleaner over Optimum ferrex when doing an engine bay? For all out clean i use Power clean and Ferrex.

Magic wheel cleaner has more of that “touchless” effect that I like when pressure washing. Less brush work! Ferrex is great, but MWC has that extra umph

Hey man. I love your videos, and idk if im alone in this. But id rather you not give us the like. “On this episode of…” clips in the beginning because you always show the end result and while yea, some people are going to want to see how it got there, people like me who have been watching your channel for a long time and know how your videos tend to go because they’re pretty much all the same when it comes to a detailing video, or suspension install, or interior clean. So when I see the final product so early in the video, it makes me feel like there’s no reason to watch the rest of the video. And I hate that feeling and I want to watch the rest of the video. But sometimes I just feel like I’m wasting my time because I already saw the end result in the first 15 seconds ):
