2 years ago I was a 25 handicap. I’m 22 yrs old and After some serious time at the range, a lot of lost golf balls, lots of RUclips I can definitely say that paying for lessons was the best decision I ever made. During my 2 year journey I made more progress in the past 4 months after getting lessons. I’m now a 9.5 handicap and looking at getting a full set of fitted clubs to fit my new and improved swing. Stop watching these RUclips videos, they’re great for short term fix but honestly just pay the money to get lessons. Changed my golf game forever. I shot 72 for the first time last week. I only just started playing the tips this year. For learning I recommend using the men’s tees and your short game + putting. I can confidently 2 putt pretty much any green I get on within 45ft.
To all the people struggling to break 100 or 90 (seen a fair few comments) I would recommend short game and putting practice over everything! You will shave some serious shots if you can constantly two putt and have confidence around the greens chipping
my issue is not knowing my distances with each club, more specifically the irons. once it gets warm again, I'll find out. last month, I was able to sneak in a round of golf before they closed for the season and I was able to hit off the tee rather consistently on to the fairway. I can usually 2 putt on the green. but yeah. my irons and wedges I need to work on.
I’m so glad you covered how far to stand from ball at address. This has been vexing me for weeks. You’re officially my favourite instructor (today). Thanks Matt
@@86Carrera911 yeah that same window through all of them. It forces you to move closer to the ball for the shorter clubs to reach the same spot and vice versa.
There is no “one right way” for everyone. I like how you always tell us that we should adapt the information to our specific swing to improve. These lessons are great and I appreciate your efforts to help me improve my skills.
I just want to say I stumbled on your channel as I am a beginner golfer and am putting together a half set of clubs until I can master those clubs then buy a full set and have some real fun. Besides all of that , you are an amazing teacher of this sport. You make everything you say so simple to understand and you also can feel your passion for the game. Thanks for this video it really helped me a lot to understand the uses of each club. I am now a fan of yours and just subscribed and will be tuning in on all of your videos. Thanks again and keep the great videos coming . God bless you and your family.
Thanks Matt for explaining the distance from the ball! I have always struggled to know how far I should be from the ball, now I have a reference!! Thanks a million!
You have explained the set up fm short to long irons the best I’ve seen to date thx. I tried it today and I’d say I flushed 90% of them. Terrific. How I made the small 1/2 to 1” increments was to hold my club in the middle of my stance. The btm of the hossel should then b about the centre of my body. So then, keeping the btm of the hossel in the middle and hovering over the ball, I put it mid ball for short irons; near back of ball for mid irons; and just behind the ball for long irons. Thx so much Matt. Mike.
Excellent lesson today. Great reminder to have on the course. Sometimes i forget about ball position when hitting longer irons. Also great tip on increasing speed with those lower lofted clubs. Thanks Matt
What you said at around about the three or four minute Mark make so much sense to me. I've been having the golf ball in the centre of my stance for all my iron shots. Always hit the pitching wedge and 9 iron well but really struggle with my longer irons.
I'm glad that now i've understood the mechanics behind these irons. will adjust my stance accordingly to hit these irons better next time. Thanks Matt from Kuala Lumpur
I know the video is a bit old Matt but it's just what I needed! I keep forgetting this all the time and just take the same setup every time. Thanks for reminding me!
Great Lesson! I've had the wrong ball placement forever because it was never fixed during any of my lessons. Your insight confirmed my thinking. I can't wait to try your Recommended ball position.
Very helpful setup tips! Thank you. I tend to move the ball a little bit too much with each club.. the grouping in sets, short, mid, long is very helpful! Cheers!
Took this down the range the other day as I wanted something to work on instead of just hitting balls aimlessly, and can honestly say it was one of the best sessions I've had 👍
I like your video visual labels. I took a photo on my phone for reference. I am new to golfing and I was having problems picking my clubs. I have no issues with the driver....but the clubs were confusing to me and I was avoiding them at all costs. I certainly have a better understanding now after watching your clip. I also liked that your explanation was clear, especially on club placement on the body and on the grass. Thanks so much. Watching from Nova Scotia, Canada.
This was a brilliant one, Matt. Thank you Matt. I have just taken the game up again this year after a long layoff. I haven't been able to gap test because there wasn't much difference between my 5 and 9 irons. Not the 10 yards between clubs that it should be. I was hitting all of my irons from center. I will try this thank you.
I'll be going to the range tonight to practice this. I have been taking the same stance for 5 iron through to SW and as you could guess it ain't working! I really struggle with 5 and 6 iron but gets easier the more loft on the club. Changing my address position could be the key, cheers Matt!
Nice, simplified explanation of ball position. You're right, based on our individual swings the ball position can be different from player to player. I've been experimenting with my 7 iron, from total center to just a bit to the left. What is comical in golf is how our swing and contact change from day to day. The question is always, "Who is showing up today? Fred Couples or Fred Flintstone" :) Thanks Matt!
Solid tips about how to have a consistent address setup and ball position! You mention taking a wider stance and swinging slightly faster as you go up through the longer irons. I understand where you’re going with that but for me (and I’d guess for many others out there), I have a hard time mentally resisting the urge to swing faster bc I tend to wind up more and it throws off my rhythm and timing. I feel like it might be better to reinforce that a wider stance is a way to naturally ALLOW the slightly longer shafts to help you add 2-3mph, rather than thinking “I must swing faster” with each club. Great food for thought and I can’t wait to experiment with this on the range!
Hello from down under Matt, this was not only an “important lesson”, you’ve given us probably the best and most useful golf lesson ever on RUclips. 👍. I kinda understood the need to adjust ball position but as a newbie golfer it ever dawned on me that swing speed needs to be adjusted. Now you’ve shown us it makes sense. Look forward to future lessons. Stay safe all. Cheers
Great tips especially the distance from the golf ball by dropping the club end to your knee. I have quite a big belly and never sure if I’m standing to far away from the ball
Nice lesson! I was struggling, even with my new fitted irons, then my husband was looking on the driving range, and told me, my club was bottoming out on a different position (more forward) than my ball position was good for. So, after some experimenting, I found the best positions, and the irons do work nicely. The part in the video on experimenting on not just follow text beek hints is a really good point! :-)
Never really thought about my swing speed on different length irons, really makes sense just kind of automatically do it but now it's something to remind myself, I don't need to try and crush a 9 iron just need to relax and swing it.
Thank you Matt, ive been struggling like crazy working out my spacing, from the golf ball, im either to close, to far, or i lean over so much i could roll over lol, the tip of the club an inch above the knee makes so much sense, cannot wait to have a crack at that next time im at the driving range thank you mate really awesome lesson :)
Very helpful video Matt!!! What about ball position on fuller swings with a 54 and 58 degree wedge? Middle of the stance or just slightly back? Thank you for all of your content...it is very helpful.
Hi Matt ,very nicely explained ; I always had doubts about how far to stand from the ball ; I also want to know if you grip the different clubs at the same place or do you shift the grip up and down for different clubs ! I am told to grip the wedges lower and long irons higher ?
New to golf and been really struggling with my long irons, when I say struggling I mean 30 yards, still applying shaft lean for my 4 and 5 iron. Hopefully this helps!
Hi Matt, thanks for this video - I often hit my 3 and 4 irons (Mizuno MP-57s) on the toe, although they manage to still go straight, but at only about 70% of the distance and clearly not flush. I know you can really diagnose the reason for this, but could you please provide some tips for a potential solution to this problem - am I perhaps standing too far back? Many thanks from your friend in South Africa :)

Broke 100 for the first time yesterday. Your content has been very helpful thank you.

Your a golf junkie now, Evan. Congratulations , Golfer!

My question is it the same for short, mid, and long, such that the handle rests at the 1-2" above the knee? I think yes, but not sure.
Makes perfect sense now why I have so much trouble with my 4 iron, but 9 and 7 are just fine. :) Thanks Matt!

Between you and Rick shiels my game has been improving at a steady rate and I put qlot of time into improving myself and your insights help
Glad we are helping
I second that! Thanks a lot guys!

Great guide. Just what I needed in my journey to break 90. Good stuff, keep it up and thanks.
Just started 2 weeks ago and loving it. Thanks for the lesson my swings have been looking great at the range thank you🤟

Very good tutorial. This is great ! Thanks you for sharing, I’ll go back to this to make sure I’m not easing back to my bad habits.
Amazing. Some of the best advice I’ve ever gotten is from this video. Thank you!!!
Thank you very much for the Physics lesson. You presented the information perfectly. I will research more of your lessons in the future.
Solid tips about how to have a consistent
address setup and ball position!

Solid content again Matt; the basics such as ball position are so important to remember.
Thanks for this timely reminder
Cheers
Always look forward to your content Matt. You're one of the best out there . Keep them coming!!!!!
Matt, thx great reminder of proper setup.
Distance from the ball! That's a great tip. You and Rick have really helped!
Great tips especially the distance from the golf ball by dropping the club end to your knee. I have quite a big belly and never sure if I’m standing to far away from the ball
So nicely explained! This one video was enough for me to subscribe. Can’t wait to see more.
Thanks Matt, what a great video and very clear explanation / to copy your tips. Your advice is appreciated and is easy to understand too.
Thanx Max. Great lesson on ball placement with the irons and why.
Best video I’ve watched on how to hit the ball. Went to the course after these tips and hit 3 under my best round of 9 yet. I smashed all my irons.
Now i know proper distancing for each club . thank you, Sir
Keep coming back to this video👍
This video literally took me from over 100 to a 85-95, struggled so much with my set up and distance from the ball
Just getting back into golf since high school tournies, and this is a great and simple video! Thank you!
Great, one of the best instruction videos I have seen. Well done
Well done Mr. Fryer. Great explanation and demonstration.
Great clear instructions as usual. Cheers from 🇨🇦
I cannot wait to hit the practice range tomorrow to try this out. Thanks for the info 🙏
Solid fundamentals. Appreciate and will use the distance to ball check (grip above left kneecap 1-2 inches) everytime.
That setup tip was extremely helpful. No know has ever explained what a proper distance should be. Thanks!!
Glad it has helped 👍
My old Nike Machspeed 7 iron, 33 degrees. My new TaylorMade 7 iron, 28.5 degrees. It's insanely awesome!
Excellent and very instructive! Thank you!

Hii
Thank you , I use my irons the same inches don't open my legs better. etc. I'm going to use your stuff. Matt Bove
My 6 iron tens to be my go-to club. I tend to bump & run if I use a 5 or 4 iron, so 6 is perfect for height and distance for my game.
Good video my RUclips friend. I will try it on my next range session Friday evening. 🙏⛳
One of my favorite golf channels.
Thanks and great name
Thanks for that Matt will try and out that into practise
What a fantastic video! Great detail.
That has helped me so much, thank you 👍🏻👍🏻
This was excellent. Worth bookmarking for future reference. Thanks 👍
More great drill’s thanks Matt 👍
Great tutorials! Thank you
Never really thought about my swing speed on different length irons, really makes sense just kind of automatically do it but now it's something to remind myself, I don't need to try and crush a 9 iron just need to relax and swing it.
Yep think of the role of the club then make the appropriate swing
Your jackets zipper being black on the white gives an accentuates the center of your body which really helps on this lesson good choice
Matt, great content m8, always really good to have content explained in detail that we all understand 👍
Good stuff. Thanks a bunch, Matt.
Superb little video
Cheers Matt lad 🏌
Thanks Matt! Excellent lesson!
My pleasure!
My ball striking is pretty inconsistent. I think this advice might help me take a few strokes off my score. Thanks!!!!!
very nice useful info...Thanks a lot...Cheers!!!
Awesome 👌 lesson.. I will try it tomorrow..
Very helpful!!!
Great video Matt, simple techniques which I will definitely use in my set up!
Great lesson. I always appreciate the fundamentals reminder.
Can't wait to try this out. Thanks
Great instruction. Thanks Matt
Nicely presented, could you do a similar one for driver and fairway on off tee and how the shaft should/should not lean
Great fundamentals and a great demo, thanks!
love this video. i will use this guide. matt do you have a video for striking the ball with the ball above the feet or below ?
Nicely explained. Brilliant
Very Nice Teaching. Thanks
Matt is a genius.
Good lesson thanks.
Great tips!
Great well detailed lesson
Very good thank you you make it look so easy
Simply superb.

Interesting take on it. My instructor says you should play all clubs from the left heel. Different teaching methods I guess...
good lesson. luv your swing, trying to get the same as my ideal, gettin there.
Really nice video !!! Love it thanks
Another very helpful lesson
Thank you so, so much..
New to golf and been really struggling with my long irons, when I say struggling I mean 30 yards, still applying shaft lean for my 4 and 5 iron. Hopefully this helps!
Hey Matt! Does the stance setup where the club should be an inch or max 2 above your lead knee also apply with long irons?
Great video btw !
