      Scotty, you should advise the guy to clean the dpf, I recommend they be cleaned at 50k km (also fuel vaporiser if they have an active regeneration type dpf system) if easily removable, otherwise every 80-100k if more difficult to access (read: $). Anyway diesels are using huge amounts of EGR, at part throttle and even at idle 50% or so.
      They really need oil/air separators with replaceable 1 micron filters. An example unit you might be interested for the sake of looking, model RCC351K here in Australia. Provent also make a similar unit (German company).

      One of the most common engines on UK and Euro roads is a 2.0 litre turbo diesel. Manual. In the UK, years ago, company cars which were a big perk of a job became taxable as a benefit. The tax-rates depended on the engine capacity and there was a big jump over 2000cc. So, the manufacturers brought out 1998cc versions to beat the tax bracket. It's why it's one of the most popular engines in a wide range of vehicles even today. VW have them through the range, and I have a Ford Mondeo with a 1998cc TDI.

  • @drwisdom1
    @drwisdom1 2 года назад +10

    I have been driving VWs since 1973 and was always anti-diesel. But when VW and the government settled dieselgate in 2017 the dealers had some 2015 Sportwagen TDIs that had been in storage due to the diesel embargo. Being from 2015 they were considered to be old so VW offered incentives to help the dealers dump them. I got a 2015 Sportwagen TDI with a manual and 87 miles on the odometer. We got $5000 off, 0% interest, and a 10yr/120k mile factory warranty. Accounting for inflation it is the cheapest new car I have ever bought ($19k). It is enough fun to drive and fast enough that I sold my 2006 GTI. The mpg is exceptional. I average in the upper 40s around town and 55 mpg when doing 75 mph. The 13.5 gallon tank can go over 700 miles when travelling. I don't believe the Jetta in this video averages 65 mpg. Especially if it is picking up and dropping off passengers.

    • @user-nh3gu1ge3d
      @user-nh3gu1ge3d 2 года назад +7

      Yet another person who has no idea how taxes work. Let's say he drives 10k miles for uber in a year, he can write off, what, 57 cents a mile? So that's $5,700 off his taxable income. Let's say his effective tax rate is 22%. So lowering tax burden by $5,700 (of which he would pay 22% in taxes) equals $1,254 of actual paid tax that he would recoup. Great. I mean, I'll take it but it's nothing to write home about, esp for someone who lives in their car. And mind you, he could write off the mileage even without upgrading his car, on any vehicle he was driving. So to say or imply that he can save or make money on taxes by buying this car is just a total misunderstanding. You NEVER make money in taxes by spending it, at least the average Joe doesn't. "Just write it off" like it pays for it. That's what stupid people say.

It also implants itself in your tissues/organs and doesn't break down. Not so nice. Same issue with the direction injection petrol engines these days, they're producing a lot more micron particle emissions

    I bought a 2013 Golf MK6 TDI back in October 2016 and it was the smartest move I have made in a while. It was the last year of TDs made in Germany (Vin starts with WVW...and not 2), had 69k km, one owner and was really well maintained (all record from day one were available). I upgraded the rims to 19" from Golf R, the stock tires to Michelin PS4S's (I am at my 2nd set in 5 soon 5 years), put a K&N lifetime air filter and that's about it....Aside from the battery and glow plugs that had to changed when the vehicle got 5 years, NOT a single issue in 5 years of ownership....Lately, the DPF started getting clogged and caused the replacement of the intake manifold (under warranty), but I finally managed to get it replaced under warranty as well at 202976km (15 km before the warranty expires at 203 k km, because my vehicle has 6 MT...All the AT diesel VWs here in Canada saw their warranty expire at 193k km...). If some one is looking for one of these, I tell him: go for it without hesitation: quite small car, yet comfortable; zippy and fun to drive, economical and easy to park in small parking spots, enough power (especially the torque) to take on long trips,...The only car you need if you are single or have a small family! I have just bought an Acura TL SH-AWD (medium sized sedan) with 6MT as well, which is a huge step up form the Golf TDI, but the latter is still fun and really enjoyable!

    I've been a mechanic for a very long time myself Scotty and we differ in our opinions in some aspects.
    I'm not the type to trash talk other mechanics so my point here is not to insult you.
    While it's true that lots of the newer turbo induction gasoline engines are not reliable, it's NOT true that a gasoline engine with turbo induction cannot be reliable for durabilty.
    Your video reminds me of one of the most favorite cars I've ever owned, a 1994 Volvo 940 Turbo.
    I've worked on many Volvos over the years. I can't stand any of them made after the early 90's redesigns. When Volvo started designing all of their cars in front wheel drive platforms they killed their reputation.
    Anyway, the Volvo 240, 740 and 940 cars were very well made. The 2.4 liter 4 cylinder engine was virtually bulletproof and the turbo engines could go over 300,000 miles, even in severe duty.
    I fondly remember owning my 940 at the same time when Hondas were the rage for kids to race. My Volvo was bone stock and had over 150 hp, oh yeah, rear wheel drive too.
    I had allot of fun seeing the shocked looks on A kid's face as they got blown away by a grocery getting Volvo. 😂😂😂

Up to 2013 I believe, that engine is decades old, an 8v engine we've nicknamed the "2 Slo (115hp)" in our shop. It came on base model VW's without all the electronic wizardry and made them solid daily drivers that are incredibly reliable. I work at a VW dealership and I've always seen them with over 200,000 miles, coming in for nothing but oil changes and rotations. I'd say, similar to your Celica perhaps, have never done any major repairs to one other than maintenance.

    Another consideration for that guy's Mazda problem - grounding points. Mazdas are famous for grounding points corroding and failing, causing multiple code errors and freaky things happening. I went through a couple frustrating months trying to decipher the problem in my old '04 Mazda 6 V6 hatchback a number of years ago. Multiple lights on the dash, they would come and go, multiple codes on my scanner which often spoke to communication errors etc. One day my wipers turned on after I activated my turn signals... this went on for weeks before I discovered a corroded grounding point on the body frame in front of the driver wheel well, just below the air cleaner box. 3 wires into one plastic harness with an eyelet bolted to the frame. The bolt was rusted, the metal pins and common rail inside the plastic harness were corroded and the 3 cables (each of different gage) had green corrosion on the copper braided wire about 3/4" up inside the wire's insulation. I had to cut off 2" of each wire, splice on new copper cable, and then added a copper eyelet to each wire. I heat sealed each splice. I then used a thread tapping tool to restore the hole in the frame, and used a new stainless-steel bolt to attach the eyelets. Finally, I covered this connection with dielectric grease to prevent future problems. Presto!! No more electrical wackiness! Years earlier I had to do a similar project - one that was much more grueling to perform - on the large power lead on my alternator. The same type of corrosion, and the wire strands all broke away, causing arching, which melted the plastic cover on the bolt nad gave me crazy drivability problems. Once I discovered the problem, I cut off the corroded portion - about 3" - then spliced a large gage copper wire with a large copper eyelet. After connecting it all together I used black RTV sealant to create a new waterproof cover on the connection to prevent that from ever happening again. The dang alternator is mounted down low behind the engine where water would hit it from driving through puddles with the right tire. Stupid stupid engineering.

    I purchased a 2014 Jetta Sportswagon TDI 6sp about 3 years ago, 1 1/2 tears later had a DPF filter clog and called dealer, they replaced it and the Valve absolutely free in just a couple of hours, The warrantee is real and amazing, I will straight pipe it at 90-100k, The mpg and comfort are great for long trips and it made driving fun again, Negatives is I have too purchase Oil online to get the proper stuff and always try to get the freshest Fuel as American Diesel is real nasty.

    I just traveled across South Dakota at 90-100mph for 2 whole tanks of fuel and got a hand calculated 35mpg. That’s on a ‘15 Jetta with turbo back exhaust and a Malone tune. Stock turbo and 125k.

    Volkswagen always had problems with the headliner. It still baffles me that they haven't fixed the problem.

      @@stevemcgowen maybe there are some exceptions. But I've seen this problem on Audi's as well.
      Washing the headliner is definitely something to avoid on VAG cars.
