You guys have NO IDEA how many new RC pilots you have brought into the hobby! Not to mention the inactive RC pilots that are now dusting off their old equipment, and coming back to a long lost love. I flew for years, all the way up to quarter scale (& even a bit larger) aerobics, 3-D, warbirds & sport flyers. I left when Spektrum had just introduced the ONLY 2.4ghz transmitter, which I bought, but the vast majority of flyers were on FM (& even a few still on ancient Kraft AM!) Also, electrics were just entering LiPo batteries & brushless motors, but most electrics were "profile" planes from balsa & monocoat kits, or small "foamies" that were useless in any winds over 5-10 mph. My point is, I am finding out that "my hobby" is a whole new world! No longer does it take 2 weeks pay and 6 months of Sundays to build & fly with your buddies! $100 & an afternoon will get you in the air! Pretty cool! Keep up the good work. See you at the field!
Haha Im flying on LTE modem and have unlimited range with FPV view with my parrot disco drone... I had a flight of 10 KM already but I could go for 50+ KM with my upgraded batteries... Some dudes are posting good batteries on auction sites that are new and half the price, I bought 10.000 mahz for a very cheap price. This is like a ultimate wet dream of every old school RC to have a plane with unlimited range lol and such cool features from the controling APP, GPS etc.

25 or 30 years ago, when these planes first came out, I always thought they would make great rc flyers. I tried to convert one, but I didn't have the advantage of the micro gear we have today, so mine didn't fly so good, but thanks to you guys I feel vindicated. Great video.
What is the plane called, like what would I look for at the store to find this glider. Edit: I looked online and found out it is called the Sky Riders Foam Glider. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Edit 2: I also found a smaller 24" version called the White Sky Glider sold on the Hobby Lobby website for $6.99, made by Maui Toys. I was looking a bit more online while writing this and Maui Toys also owns the bigger Sky Rider Gliders. Edit 3: I bought a 24" one and they are both called Sky Riders.
I was impressed with what the guys did. Like the old FT. They were like little kids with all the joy and laughter. Made a bad day immensely better. Thanks guys.
Those foam gliders are amazing! They're designed to fly with all sorts of damage (like being thrown into trees, cars, houses, and friends), and I think you just proved how resilient they are!
I flew the one I made in a combat at FFE and man can these things go for a long time. With those twin gremlin motors and an 1850-2200 2s you could fly for at least 30-40 mins. Which is great for combat or even leisurely flying. You know what I just might order some and get started with the testing.
Love seeing something that anyone can try at home and have a great experience. It's always been the "essence" of Flight Test for me. Way to keep it going Gents. Cheers
With sweptback designs, the weight of the wings draws the moment rearward from the datum. The CG will always be further back. BTW, my kids and I found your channel about a month ago and we've never done RC before. We'll be ordering for birthdays soon. You convinced us. We love the channel.
1+ on the CG bit. Look up how to find CG based on % of MAC(Mean Aerodynamic Chord) in detail - It's theoretically a bit math heavy, but there is a fairly simple Graphical way to do it if you have a simple constant chord or single taper wing. Here's a link to a quite straight forward recipe n this graphical method I found on the net: moleski.net/rc/pix/calc-MAC.png . You can simplify it a bit to find approximate CG for an existing wing by simply laying the wing on a large piece of paper and then just draw around it as described in the pic.
I just saw one of these today at Hobby Lobby for 9.99 while getting some foam board for my 1st build. Heading back tomorrow to pick one up. Thanks guys!!
I've literally wanted to do this since I saw my first foam glider when I was like 9 years old! (That was...gulp...42 years ago.) Guess I never quite got around to it. :-) But finally...somebody has realized my dream. :-) Thanks guys; I was grinning thru the entire video! This might have some FT STEM potential (which I'm hoping to start this summer).
And...it's actually about a $105 Walmart glider: h-pack - $70 ; 450mAh 3s - $11 ; RX - $15 ; Plane - $10 . I don't have any of that stuff "just lying around"! Yet...
It's funny how so many people say that they were "grinning/smiling" while watching these video. They definitely evoke both achieved and un-achieved childhood memories, putting a smile on our faces. :)
Fantastic! Looks like a lot of fun. I love these build off competitions and wish more were done. Time to make a plane from a large laundry detergent bottle or something silly like that.
Just yesterday I built one of these as a high-mount pusher motor (2204 size) and rudd/elev control. It flies really good! Really docile, decent glide slope, not exactly aerobatic but still really fun to cruise with. Might even make a good fpv platform.
I just found this site today and have had a grin on my face all morning. What a great bunch of guys just having a blast with projects. I've also learned a lot.
Yes, one channel per motor for differential thrust, plus he actually used another 2 channels for the elavon (1channel for the left, and one for the right elevator). So it was still 4 channels.
The channels being used were throttle and rudder, only two channel, just like the little toy airhogs planes that only used two motors for throttle and steering
I love this! I have bought a few busted RC planes at thrift stores and garage sales, and built new planes for them. Some of the dollar stores have smaller versions of these gliders, too. That is where I get my foamboard, too.
We need more channels like you guys on RUclips. People enjoying what they love and sharing it with the rest of the world. Definitely earned me hitting that subscribe button.
For some real fun, clip the main wings down about eight inches each. I discovered this when my over excited grandson ran into a stair rail and broak a wing. He was so upset about it. I said "no problem" and snapped the other wingtip off to match. We had a great time flying the thing.
Great vid.Been making these into cheap Rc planes for my nieces and nephews for years. Fun and easy. I use an micro contoler from e-flite a few micro servos for ailerons and elevator just as you did. Powered with a 380 motor 10 amp esc and 800mAh battery.
Same here couldn't stop miles the while damn time! The fact that you guys are so precise in directions so that we can make an exact replica, and just the fun you guys have also makes you guys top notch!
All I can think about is the days in Kapper's garage. This is the kind of chill, fun, friendly challenge that inspires you to immediately grab a friend and try it yourself.
The kids and I had a foam chucker from Walmart that glided so straight and true it landed exactly where you pointed it. Many a summer night tossing that in a triangle pattern. We later got an RC Airhog with differential thrust. Delta thing maybe 14" span. Flew on rails and about 10 minutes on a charge. Times were tight - little toy budget but we made the most of a few bucks. This video takes me back.
I still have my old kraft radio stuff somewhere. I started out on control line combat planes. .049. 8yrs old. 65 now and still love drilling holes in the clouds.
those are some super cool shots of the drone following the glider. never really seen video footage where the camera moves around a target like that, which is also moving.
Lalith, if you can't order it, make it yourself! It is easier to buy it ready to transform, but foam planes are easy to make. The best glue is the German Uhu Por, a contact glue that does not chemically attack the foam (which is expanded polipropilene, but there are alternatives. Look at this forum from your own country: www.rcindia.org/tools-materials-and-building-techniques/about-white-depron-foam/25/?wap2 Above all, improvise. DIY all the time. Look around you - there's tons of raw materials to be re-purposed . Good luck and good flights!
Kmart used to sell those gliders in the 1990s or something almost identical. We used to heavily modify them and throw .049 and .051 engines on them with rudder, elevator and sometimes ailerons. 5 minute epoxy for the build and repairs until they were to heavy to fly... Thanks for bringing back some great memories.
Back in the 70’s an engineer at Rockwell in Downey Ca made a half scale Space Shuttle flight deck structure, displays, and control sticks from nothing but foam board and glue. It’s amazing stuff
i grew up with those gliders always wondered if they could be turned into a rc plane. now I know yous guys are awesome! I couldn't stop smiling . Amazing! keep it up guys!!
I clicked on this video not expecting much. Honestly, it looked kind of boring but it kept showing up in suggested videos. Glad I finally watched it. Those planes flew so smooth it was almost calming to watch them fly. I think this video pushed me over the edge to make me want to get back in the hobby. I don’t know if there are more videos of these two particular planes (going to look after this comment) but if there isn’t, there should be.
I have been waiting for this video FOREVER, why spend hundreds on a kit plane that doesn't come with the electronics anyway? Build one, hand the remote to your kid and let them go nuts.
Those gliders are so good to fly. The down side is without a motor it's toss and chase. But with a motor these things can be a dream to fly, they are very well designed and have a low wing loading making it perfect for a plane that flies easily. That was awesome watching you fly them.
I tried to Make One of those gliders fly RC, but I accidentally put the horizontal stabilizer upside down and it stalled and broke in to a million pieces.
Great project. Back in the dawn of time when I was in college a bunch of us got glow plug engines (not .049 but smallish) and props, a small pile of balsa and built planes. (Control line, R/C was crazy expensive) I built one that flew something like these, only every now and again it would bank into the center and buzz the pilot. Usually it would make it out to the length of the lines and get under control again.
Fantastic watching you folk & your Craft , the walmart planes weren't that much of a challenge for you Specialists , but it is awesome to watch the progress as you think & rethink different system's & they work !! i love it when a plan Come's together !!!!
Great Video!! I find myself watching your videos not only for the creative content, but the genuine joy you guys have for what you do. Inspiring. Keep it up!
I taught myself to fly r/c with a similar K Mart foam glider back in the 1980s......cox .049 and a single servo for rudder. I used a 35 mm film canister for a fuel tank, would climb almost OOS and glide for a good 20 minutes!
You guys are simply amazing! Definitely the best RC channel. Entertainment, innovation and excitement you have for the hobby has drawn ME in. I hope to purchase a kit in the very near future so that I can get hooked into the fun!!
I've done this with the other popular toy glider with the bigger wing and they fly pretty darn well ! It's a blast and cheap ! FUN !!! You guys Da Best !!!!
It would be awesome to build one that is set to naturally climb slightly and that will fly somewhat straight. On a sunny calm day put a note on it and see how far it will go unassisted. Like a note in a bottle thrown into the ocean that washes up across the Atlantic. Maybe someone a couple hundred miles away would reply. Could be a fun thing to do. Provided it doesn't fly into an airport lol.
Yeah as you kind of hinted at the end there's an issue with control authority. Basically the FAA, and most civil aviation authorities allow RC aircraft but don't allow autonomous drones. Another legal technicality (which isn't always followed strictly if we're entirely honest) is line of sight, but nobody cares if its maybe a few seconds but a day is a long time. I'd love to see the challenge, but if they were following along in a car or something so they could basically take a road trip with a plane following them the whole way would be awesome!
It would basically be a very large aerofoil covered in a solar array, and a few motors, props, battery, and electronics. As long as they fly in direct sunlight, it should work quite well.
BoBu I’m pretty skeptical of anything solar powered, because you need a lot of sq ft of PV panels and very little weight, but as long as it can be launched by other means, it should be able to sustain itself in the air as long as it’s sunny.
I've just done a little project like this, converted a cheap 1m wingspan foam glider with a 3cm ducted fan motor on top of the fuselage, rudder, elevator and ailerons. It's fun!
the two propeller one was awesome! kept the glider basically the same, was super light, had great control, and could do a awesome trick! Good job on making that one, seems better than some actual rc planes lol.
I would love to do this kind of thing. when I was a kid,I removed motors from one car, and mounted on another, to see how it worked., I am into this kind of fun!!!
Since a few days ago I spend all my time in the web watching FT videos. So cool!! So far I bought the foam board for my first scratch-build plane, the FT Cub.
The CG is near the AFT 1/3 of the root wing chord because the wing is swept back. For these types of wings you need to calculate where the average cord is (accounting that the root cord is wider than at the tips) and then transfer that to the fuselage ;)
Josh is so badass in this one, love the moment at 6:46 where he's just sitting there with a cup of coffee, done building his plane already xD Also the way it flew so well, the flat spin, the landing through one of the goalposts!
I did this with the exact same glider about 4 years ago. It flew awesome. Also, the CG is so far back because of the swept wing, because the lift is generated so far back. I also had a friend do one with an EDF on top, and he cut the wing mounts to remove the dihedral from the wings, and his flew super fast, and was extremely maneuverable.
This channel really encouraged me to get into the hobby and I've just started . I hope you guys make a video about recommending big planes that are cheap for people like me.
Man alive. This is it. I bought one of these and while it flew cool by hand I really want to do this conversion to it. I’ve zero knowledge. But I’m gonna try.
Nice to stumble across this video as I've been wanting to do both a motorized version as well as a slope soaring version of these gliders. A couple tips on purchasing. They sell these same gliders at Hobby Lobby and with minimal effort you can always find a 40% off coupon. If you are youngster on a budget or you have as many nieces and nephews as I do, this helps. lol
Alex finally lost one of his made up games. I'm going to do this for a cheap glider. Plenty of spare parts laying around. Take her up high and chop the motor. Love it.
Just found you guys and I really love the video. So refreshing to see a “challenge” video where there isn’t any made up tension. Just two friends having fun together, awesome.

I always loved these foam gliders as a kid and always wondered how they would fly with a motor. So fun to watch!
Differential thrust is still 2 channel though isnt it? One channel per motor to give the ability to vary the thrust between the two?
Yes, one channel per motor for differential thrust, plus he actually used another 2 channels for the elavon (1channel for the left, and one for the right elevator). So it was still 4 channels.
I think techincally, the servos were mixed to the throttle channels, so it'd still be 2

Great video guys! The CG was so far back on the wing because you measured at the root, and its a swept wing. That changes the golden rule of 1/3 back
Awesome flight, looks like a lot of fun, WALMART here I come...!!!😎
i grew up with those gliders always wondered if they could be turned into a rc plane. now I know yous guys are awesome! I couldn't stop smiling . Amazing! keep it up guys!!
Such a fun video. I laughed along with your joy of accomplishment. You guys are fantastic pilots.
They are!
Not an RC guy but this video made me smile so much that I should consider it. Your enthusiasm is contagious.
4:44 almost died laughing...nice editing XD
I lost it.
Me too
What did you lose?
@@twinleaf3076 it.
Steven Webb
Now there is an awesome idea!
Exxxxxactly 🤜🏼🤛🏻😎👍✈️
I don't have kids
@@wparo then do it with friends or family
@7:27 Jeremy runs out to watch. Great video Flite Test, I loved the way Alex's plane tries to turn left :)
Its amazing how much i understood the concepts they mentioned in flight because of SimplePlanes...
Hey I play SimplePlanes too.
Kotasek Aircraft That's a shame :(
Great work!!!!
I tried as well. Eventually flew well. ruclips.net/video/-WFnLAqU1WI/видео.html
good thing that they dont cost that much
That sucks
Those flew far better than any expectations I had, a testament to you guys skill and knowledge! Now I want one..
Want to see a wing warping Wright Flyer!!
7:28 what is that guy in the background doing?? 😂
Steve Silvas but they were TOSSING the plane like 10 feet... to each other..
He was going for his morning run... then he sharted.
He's having diarrhea and running for the bathroom. xD jk
@@ZenZooZoo if he didn't catch it it could have gone a pretty far way behind them
John Bean but...he didn’t catch it....
Fantastic watching you folk & your Craft , the walmart planes weren't that much of a challenge for you Specialists , but it is awesome to watch the progress as you think & rethink different system's & they work !! i love it when a plan Come's together !!!!
"What do you think will happen if I put this on backwards?" Famous last words
Great Video!! I find myself watching your videos not only for the creative content, but the genuine joy you guys have for what you do. Inspiring. Keep it up!
Really gotta tease the p40 like that
looks like you could modify the Mig 3 kit by cutting the nose with added foam under nose for radiator outline
I taught myself to fly r/c with a similar K Mart foam glider back in the 1980s......cox .049 and a single servo for rudder. I used a 35 mm film canister for a fuel tank, would climb almost OOS and glide for a good 20 minutes!
gosh, no credit/link to the actual plane/glider used in this video?
Little late but they are for sale at every single Walmart for dirt cheap. Hope that helps.
You guys are simply amazing! Definitely the best RC channel. Entertainment, innovation and excitement you have for the hobby has drawn ME in. I hope to purchase a kit in the very near future so that I can get hooked into the fun!!
0:25 so that's how dude perfect does it
I've done this with the other popular toy glider with the bigger wing and they fly pretty darn well ! It's a blast and cheap ! FUN !!! You guys Da Best !!!!
Build solar powered planes and see who can build the best and longest flying one✌
That will give you like a minute extra at most tbh.
It's fun!
Oh, man... I would LOVE to find gliders like those to buy here in Brazil... Here everything is much more difficult. 😕
You can find a glider at ToysRUs in Brazil ;)
Gearbest has one under 4$ it is 48cm wingspan. Added it to cart, cause of the price, now I'm shure that I'm gonna convert it to rc plane.
MC's Creations Brasil é bem triste em relação a isso
Zabelê Medina Verdade. 😕
I'm going to try, guys! Thanks a lot! 😊
the two propeller one was awesome! kept the glider basically the same, was super light, had great control, and could do a awesome trick!
Love the video super awesome keep up the good work guys
The CG is near the AFT 1/3 of the root wing chord because the wing is swept back. For these types of wings you need to calculate where the average cord is (accounting that the root cord is wider than at the tips) and then transfer that to the fuselage ;)
0:40 - "I can't believe it's that far back" ==> Swept wing. The CG as measured against the root airfoil is quite misleading.
Indeed, mean aerodynamic chord not at wing root :-)
Josh is so badass in this one, love the moment at 6:46 where he's just sitting there with a cup of coffee, done building his plane already xD Also the way it flew so well, the flat spin, the landing through one of the goalposts!
12:30 WHAT IS THIS? DUDE PERFECT? AND THE REACTION
I purchased this glider for $2.50. Another mark down error I think.
This channel really encouraged me to get into the hobby and I've just started . I hope you guys make a video about recommending big planes that are cheap for people like me.
Love the vid keep it up guys
Man alive. This is it. I bought one of these and while it flew cool by hand I really want to do this conversion to it. I’ve zero knowledge. But I’m gonna try.
Hmmmm, what to see you guys fly next.
Lizards inside a rocket, lol
Nice to stumble across this video as I've been wanting to do both a motorized version as well as a slope soaring version of these gliders. A couple tips on purchasing. They sell these same gliders at Hobby Lobby and with minimal effort you can always find a 40% off coupon. If you are youngster on a budget or you have as many nieces and nephews as I do, this helps. lol
So that's what Josh was flying at the Edgewater Picknick... :)
Balu Das right buddy! ;)
Flite Test. Howd' you know his real name? 8)
We've been buddies for quite a few years now. :-)
Awesome Buddy. What a great bunch!
me too. I have been following these guys for years, Learned a bunch from them for many of my builds. Keep up the good work guys!
Alex finally lost one of his made up games. I'm going to do this for a cheap glider. Plenty of spare parts laying around. Take her up high and chop the motor. Love it.
Bring your lawn chair. Better, a chaise lounge.
Just found you guys and I really love the video. So refreshing to see a “challenge” video where there isn’t any made up tension. Just two friends having fun together, awesome.
