If I remember right the Overlords were their own sentient species called the Gargantis Proximae before they became Zerg. In addition to being capable of space flight, they were also psychic which the Zerg wanted with a passion. What’s interesting about them, is that they WILLINGLY became Zerg. Unlike many Zerg strains the Overlords joined the Zerg Swarm almost diplomatically due to being near extinct, and the Zerg promised to not just protect them but to mass produce them through saving their genetics. They’re also some of the longest living Zerg strains with some living so long as to be there when they were assimilated into the Zerg. These ancient ones are often known as Yggdrasil and are effectively flying Cerebrates and will control Zerg broods in the absence of Cerebrates or queens. Not sure if this is retcon lore though.
The reason that Hydralisks are the most iconic Zerg unit to me is because when my friends and I were in high school, we would try to mimic its spine attacks (which really, just looks and sounds like its spitting acid) by actually attempting to projectile stream spit each other. Tried scrolling through the comments for anyone else that did this. No? Just us? Ahhh, good times.
Okay, so anything under the overmind was controlled by cerebrates, and the overlords under that. Anything sentient under it would still be sentient, but unable to exert it's own will. Meanwhile Kerrigan later killed the cerebrares because eventually they will try to reform the Overmind. I don't know if the player character becomes a matriarch like the leader queens in HotS, but he's not around by WoL. During this purge we seem to lose a lot of specialist hero evolutions, along with lurkers and the whole colony family.
I somewhat remember the reason the cerebrate we played isn't present. From what I read after the cerebrate player followed Kerrigan until the end of Brood War, Kerrigan decided to kill CePl because she no longer needs it and also to avoid a possible backstab.
Zergs were always my favorite StarCraft race. Ever since I found the game on my dad's computer back in preschool I would play the first Zerg mission over and over. And replaying the game at older age I simply couldn't wait to finish the Terran missions so I could get to the zergs. And yet to this day I am horribly afraid of bugs, which makes my obsession with the zergs even more intriguing
I always loved how primal and animalistic and insectoid the Zerg were. I loved the idea that they looked so evil weren’t necessarily evil because I convinced myself they were just acting on a predetermined path they were made/evolved to follow. Like the Protoss were hyper religious traditionalist bigots. Terrans were squabbling political factions. Zerg were nature given a will.
Howdy Folks! Wow, I can't believe the amazing responses, conversations, and memories being shared. Let's start the conversation; Why are the Zerg the best race? It's like you read my mind. Personally, I prefer Zerg from the HotS era and SC1 Toss, vut you can't beat BW era hydralisks. Double power marines, that trade stims for disappearing and having natural healing? And it turns into a stealth unit? Heck yeah! Then you got the dark swarm to support them.
I'm sorry to say it, but I almost hate the entite zerg race because of the defiler. It beats a group of carriers with a single plague, ruins a terran attack with a single dark swarm, but when I'm using it it's always for friendly fire (OK probably I'm just bad).
@@Dog.Dad.Studios One addendum, Ultralisks are not the largest unit in the zerg army, not by far. Not even top 3, overlord itself is at least twice the size..
The second Zerg mission in the first Starcraft is where you can use Hunter Killers, I believe. I don't exactly remember the name - The Jump, The Egression, The Warp... Something like that. Anyway you have to bring the chrysalis containing Kerrigan to the checkpoint so you can warp off-world. I think you get 6 of them, and they are absolute beasts and already have their 3/3 upgrades. Ah yes, finally my favorite race. Something I always lovded since I played for the first time was that admiration and fear of the Zerg (I love insects) unlike with Terran or Protoss that we "control" them, we are aware they are sentient beings but with the Zerg since the briefing of the 1st mission in SC, the Overmind literally tells you that YOU are the one who decides what your brood will do. This gives you a much bigger sense of immersion in the game and to me, it makes you feel like an actual member of the Swarm. Also, I always loved Hydras, since the first time I saw them and something I will never forget is their growls and grunts, to this day, whenever I watch the cinematic of Fenix's fall, I feel ghosebumps of how scary and fierce Hydras can be, just right after the Psi-Blades stop working and we can hear the Hydra sounds like we are in some sort of space horror movie, knowing what the destiny of the poor Fenix will be.

This is a good question, and something I've wondered about before. My assumption is it'd be hand-waved with a little "Something something, super special DNA is stored/developed in this tech building" gobbledygook. Maybe there's a different lore explanation I just haven't come across, though.
It’s the fact that Zerg need time to manipulate the DNA or genetics of what they produce. Zerglings are the most “common” so they’re up first with drones and overlords. I think it’s a gameplay mechanic mainly, but from my research, it goes back to gestation periods.
I take it that they need the tech buildign to edit the more complex genetic codes: they are here, just not useable until the related tech building is here. Likewise, upgrades would be non-standard genetic improvements to the base genetic template. Makes more sense in any case than the protoss needing tech buildings to bring units through an already built and functional teleporter if you ask me
@@Dog.Dad.Studios I loved the evolution of the baneling in the novel, but even that felt too unscientific. Maybe I should just read the Wiki, or you try it out with one 20-30 minutes video for one unit and see how the responses go.
5:27 a plant named after "arachnid" because it looks like an arachnid doesn't make the word "arachnis" meaning "orchid" e.g. "spider flower" is indeed a flower, but that doesn't mean that English word "spider" means plant.
Most of evolution units or morphed units are from Daggoth he's the cerebrate whose love to experimenting on Zerg evolution and adaptation when put into extreme living conditions or environmental hazard. The sunken colony and spore colony are his design, for zerg unit we have the lurker and hunter killer (Hydralisk on steroid). Also Lurker are better than Sunken Colony in two ways first they can be used as a defense against large swarm of enemies like infantry units because they have a very far range and can hit multiple target, second they can be used as a offensive by creating a trap and lure the enemies ground units into it and then you just created a carnage there's a variant of Lurker that can fire their spike like a normal Hydralisk and used their mouth to bite like Zergling. And you forgot about the Torrasque which is the most fearsome Ultralisk variant ever existed.
When I was a kid, playing the Zerg was the last thing I wanted to play especially alone lmfao. I was too freaked out by the creatures and thr sounds they make
Howdy Metalwolf! I don’t know what you mean, but thank you for taking the time to comment! It’s great to see some familiar names : ) Edit: ah you’re the best! I get it : )!
Man I love these Starcraft videos and I hope for more. I never liked the Zerg, they used to creep me out as a kid. They're just too disgusting, slimy and nauseating. I bet they smell really bad. Probably like the still warm insides of a pig when you cut him open.
Zerg are the most important race in starcraft design wise, story wise and gameplay wise. They give a unique feeling of despair and dread when fighting them. The game would be un-metal without them. They're the Heath Ledger's Joker to protoss and terran's Christian Bale Batman . Terran are just starship troopers clones and Protoss are mary sues without them.
Same… I love the Hydralisk…. that Nightmarish Zerg Creature at the Box Art of Starcraft. Swapped some picture of a saint in the altar with a Hydralisk caused great uproar in our School Chapel and everyone thought the Chapel was Haunted and the picture was the personification of the Devil. They will never know that I was the haunt. I turned my School Chapel into Tristam
I believe that it's the sound design. SC1 sound design has this raw edge that makes it so much better than sc2. The sound of Sc1 seige tanks transforming is epic. The shock cannon even more so. Like a pair of tombstones slamming together. You expect epid destruction and are rewarded with it. Sc2 seige tanks don't sound powerful. Marines voices were hard-core. They sounded bad ass and ready to scrap with impossible monsters. The disrespect in their voices reminding you they were ex cons and didn't respect your rank. The base in their weapon fire really pointing at high calibre weapons. Big explosive charges launching those u238 rounds. The goliaths auto cannons were even bassier. The zealots sounded more bloodthirsty than the marines. They sounded ready to rip your guts out with their bare hands when they half screamed, half growled "my life for auir". Their psi blades clashing with explosive force when they attacked. The hydrolisks attack! Sounded like they were hocking a loogie into orbit. I thought as a child they were spitting spikes and it was completely believable that it could shred armour plated vehicles. In sc2 they sound like someone slid a knitting needle across a stack of papers. Flick flick flick. You just don't hear power. It doesn't sound even remotely dangerous. I really believe the sound design is the biggest weakness in sc2. Sc2 sounds lame. Sc1 sounds hard-core.
@@Dog.Dad.Studios their look is awesome, very spider like and razor sharp edges, they are like a buff Hydralisk 💪🏼 They launch attacks from burrowed, which is the only unit that does that so it’s OP when there’s no detectors around. They make great defense units, have AOE damage, (kind of like a Siege Tank), and are great for crowd control, doing extra damage to light units. They are also invincible under Dark Swarm, one Lurker under DS can hold off 100 Siege Tank Siege Mode fire and still murder. Lurker/Ling/Defilier is considered to be the most powerful unit composition in the game and crushes both Protoss and Terran in late-game strategy. Also… “Hold Position Lurkers”🙌🏼🙏🏼💕 Not paying attention? Your whole army is dead lol. But seriously tho, Great Video, keep up the excellent work 🙏🏼
SC2 player here, I hate zerg cuz I aint you. I just hate the game play style, the spore crawler style, cover map with defense and winning through turtling and camping more than fighting and pushing. I got to a point I would instantly leave any 1v1 vs zerg, and when playing 4v4 if mostly enemy is zerg id leave too. I respect zerg players, and admit they are better macro and micro players than I, and I don't mean disrespect to them when I leave, I just do not have fun playing against the race... Fav Zerg units are Hydralisk %100

I didn’t like zerg due to no battlecruisers or carriers just units that are meant for quality over quantity. Also the zerg campaign as the final campaign in brood war was a messed up mistake due to fighting powerful Protoss units and terran units especially carriers and battlecruisers and the zerg takeover the galaxy.
I hate how some franchises became Judeo-Christian humancentric and make everything about human: Xenomorph created by a rogue human android, Locust is mutated human affected with Rustlung, Borg Queen. Why cannot they just leave mysterious force of nature as force of nature like Dead Space's Brethren Moons
Queen spawn broodling should be 125 energy so you can cast 2! Irradiate is 75 and decimates many units! And maybe dragoons should have an ability where if many are together their shield increases slightly so they csn break terran seiges

Pure gameplay reasons. All races gatekeep their units with structures
I take it that they need the tech buildign to edit the more complex genetic codes: they are here, just not useable until the related tech building is here. Likewise, upgrades would be non-standard genetic improvements to the base genetic template.
Makes more sense in any case than the protoss needing tech buildings to bring units through an already built and functional teleporter if you ask me
@7:28 dig the command and conquer music! Two best rts ….all I just heard was “yoshi” 💥😂😂😂😂 (disrupted comment).
This is a lore Videos for 5 year olds that never heard of starcraft. Crank that lore amount up 1000 times!
How far down the rabbit hole do you want to go?
@@Dog.Dad.Studios I loved the evolution of the baneling in the novel, but even that felt too unscientific. Maybe I should just read the Wiki, or you try it out with one 20-30 minutes video for one unit and see how the responses go.
Thanks for your opinion! I truly appreciate you taking the time to write this out! Hope all is well

a plant named after "arachnid" because it looks like an arachnid doesn't make the word "arachnis" meaning "orchid"
e.g.
Thank you for sharing all of this! The knowledge this community has is staggering! And to take the time to write, thank you!
NICE FALCON PALADIN CAMEO🎉
He witnessed me : ) ahahaha, I respect casters so much, baseball, basketball, starcraft.. it takes so much skill.
the background music be like "kirov reporting"
12:09 what about zergling allergic to lemon juice?
More StarCraft lore!!
Time is the only obstacle. Thank you for stopping by and talk soon : )
Hope all is well
Imagine a game where you start as a little original zerg insect and must progress in game by assimilating species and gaining abilities
I would play it!
So basically spore
You totally forgot that Hydralisk is also best WC3 Night Elf unit ;)
There has to be a StarCraft 3, with 2 new races
Egression. Where money? Do we also get them in the science vessel mission?
Money me now!!
Egression (Zerg 2), the Amerigo (Zerg 5), Reign of fire (xZerg 2 )
My favorite zerg unit by far is Jim Raynor
My insides!!
I‘d kina like to know about the SC2 units as well
Absolutely will be doing that, just will take some time.
Awesome! Will be looking forward to that! :)
@@CLuigiplayer thank you for your kind words : )
Cracklings are my favorite zerg unit
Did I just miss it, or did you skip Lurkers?
13:13 that's falcon. Right??
Yes : )
Egression? The one that also gives you mutas?
I never thought I would say this, but yes Jesus Christ, you get 10 dad dog dollars!
hydralisk is a hervibore 😳😳😅😳😳 i thought it was originally some apex predator that could rival a xenomorph 😂😂😂😂
When I was a kid, playing the Zerg was the last thing I wanted to play especially alone lmfao. I was too freaked out by the creatures and thr sounds they make
Ahahah thank you for sharing this! I had dual dell speakers I believe and that stuff was horrifying! So I understand!
Hope all is well!
When i played the hydralysk was more or less the counter to anything.
Uh, what happened to the best StarCraft BW unit, the lurker??
I would love if you actually told more about hydralisks rather than alluding they were sloths before
0:13 you get an abo just for that pic
No Lurker?
4 minutes online and no love I have to be number one to say great video
Howdy Metalwolf! I don’t know what you mean, but thank you for taking the time to comment! It’s great to see some familiar names : )
Edit: ah you’re the best! I get it : )!
15:00
They dont even make manuals anymore
CnC music goes with everything I see
Its just so freaking good!
Dumb question. UED controlls infested terrans. They are on the same team.
Best rts game of all time?!
It’s a matter of opinion : ), what’s yours?
If it wasn't a good game, it wouldn't be talked about.
3:55 Defiler? I 'ardly know 'er!
13:43 I think you mean Zone Trooper. Those unit fit the description due to being heavy infantry. Hold on, why don't the Terrans have rail guns?
I would’ve loved to seen high tech ordinance for Marines, not just the c14 rifle
Because all high tech is for spec ops, like Nova`s
Aw... Wheres the Lurker? 🥺🥺
In the ground where their sunken colony copycat body belongs! /s
Real reason is writing is hard and sometimes I cut certain things. Hope all is well!
Man I love these Starcraft videos and I hope for more. I never liked the Zerg, they used to creep me out as a kid. They're just too disgusting, slimy and nauseating. I bet they smell really bad. Probably like the still warm insides of a pig when you cut him open.
There will be more : ) only obstacle is time.
Hope all is well!
Well written!
1. Yes Zergs are cool.
2. Kerrgan ssucks.
Is it me that’s out of touch? No. It’s the damn Terran and Protoss!
Thanks for stoping by : )
Same… I love the Hydralisk…. that Nightmarish Zerg Creature at the Box Art of Starcraft. Swapped some picture of a saint in the altar with a Hydralisk caused great uproar in our School Chapel and everyone thought the Chapel was Haunted and the picture was the personification of the Devil. They will never know that I was the haunt. I turned my School Chapel into Tristam
History of the Xel'Naga when?
Absolutely! Lots of ideas in the bank for more videos : )
SC1 hydras are more intimidating, spewing *acid* in the game. SC2 hydras look like wimps when spewing their spikes.
@@michaelkeegan9260 everything you said is true. SC1 sound effects are very nostalgic
So the zerg were just the larvae all along? Everything else were stolen "shells?" Cool. Cool to know.
It gives them even more “grandeur,” I think
The C&C music just feels wrong here.
My favorite unit is the Lurker but nah just go ahead and gloss right over them 👍🏼 😥
What makes them your favorite?
But seriously tho, Great Video, keep up the excellent work 🙏🏼
@@skyvipers thank you so much for taking the time to write all this and the kind words. I truly appreciate it!
Hope all is well!
You look like ihsahn from the black metal band Emperor
Ah this is very cool! Thank you!
Poor broodlings are forgotten...
Ahh hell! Sorry about that! As the queen says, “shhhhhzzhe raar!”
@@Dog.Dad.Studios any chance you'll cover Starcraft 2 Zerg units?
@@vinsonli302 yeah, only thing that’s hard is time to work on many projects
SC2 player here, I hate zerg cuz I aint you. I just hate the game play style, the spore crawler style, cover map with defense and winning through turtling and camping more than fighting and pushing. I got to a point I would instantly leave any 1v1 vs zerg, and when playing 4v4 if mostly enemy is zerg id leave too. I respect zerg players, and admit they are better macro and micro players than I, and I don't mean disrespect to them when I leave, I just do not have fun playing against the race...
Fav Zerg units are Hydralisk %100
Howdy! Thank you so much for taking the time to write this! I’m excited to cover StarCraft 2 soon : ) a game very close to my heart, and one that I will share my achievements hehe..
Ahahah I understand not liking a matchup, and at the end of the day, time is our most finite resource.
Hope all is well! And talk soon!
All the best,
Dog dad
P.S.
Hydra homies
I only liked for Thrall.
More work? Ahah thanks for taking the time to comment : )
SC1 rostet > SC2 roster.
I hate how SC2 ruined everyone and everything.
Zerg, Protoss, Kerrigan...I hate this so damn much how Blizzard fouled it up.
Queen spawn broodling should be 125 energy so you can cast 2! Irradiate is 75 and decimates many units! And maybe dragoons should have an ability where if many are together their shield increases slightly so they csn break terran seiges
What was that defiler gameplay man lmao
I recorded last night and might have been inhaling some primordial ooze, do not recommend!
