What Made John Cena vs The Rock So Special? (WrestleMania 28)

  • It was 2012, and after a year of build up we were finally getting a match that was billed as 'Once in a Lifetime', it was going to be The Rock in his first Wrestlemania match back from Hollywood up against John Cena.. Need I say anymore? Icon vs Icon, Legend vs Legend. We sadly cannot go back in time to this, but we can get nostalgic about it right?

I’ll never forget the hype that was WrestleMania 28. I remember the whole buildup of it from Survivor Series 2011 all the way to WrestleMania itself, it was so surreal. This was also the first time of me seeing The Rock in the ring and I was hyped and he was facing my all time favorite, John Cena? Hell yeah! This was a win win for me. Me and my family enjoyed this match from top to bottom and we applauded both men for giving us a classic we can remember for generations to come. So many memories, man.😌

What a time to be alive. I’d stopped watching in 2010 with the Nexus and Cena angle but I ordered this last minute on ppv 2 years later. I remember feeling the same way you did about the ending, seeing Cena on the ramp with that look of despair, I felt for him. I was like damn… what’re they gonna do next with Cena. Then the next night on Raw Cena is in the ring, Brock Lesnar’s music hit after 8 years and he came down to the ring to F5 his ass 😂😂 I popped hard, my heart sank and my jaw dropped, I was in disbelief jumping and laughing lol. I’m typing this vividly remembering the 24hrs between Mania and the Raw after were crazy. Never had WWE evoked that much emotion in me before and they never replicated that feeling after. I don’t think they ever will be able to spark like that again tbh.

I remember watching Wrestlemania 27 and seeing the Promo AD for Mania 28 the following year. Being that I lived 15 minutes from the Stadium, all I did those next 8-9 months was beg my mother for tickets to this show. From Good Grades to Chores, as a 9 year old I did it all. And on that day in February when I opened up that TicketMaster Envelope and Saw tickets to one of the biggest spectacles this industry has to offer, it was one of the most overwhelming days of my life. But Fast forward to April 1st, that day felt like eternity. From walking on the street towards the Stadium. Seeing people outside the gates having promo battles and wrestling matches was pretty cool. But the moment that got me was the second I went through the curtains and saw the stage and the canopy with the cell. I never cried so many tears although this was only the first of 3 second was when taker kicked out of the Sweet Chin Music and Pedigree combo and the 3rd was Tears of Joy when The Rock Won and he does his signature pose and the Pyro goes off around Sun Life. Mania 28 will probably be the one memory that will forever live in my mind heart and soul. Although the Industry may not be the same, whether it evolves or not, I will often flashback to this night for one reason and one reason only: This night made me realize why I fell in Love with Professional Wrestling at the age of 3 and still Love it to this day.💯‼️

Back in 2004 - 2006, I would go on RUclips and watch Cena’s matches and look for him VS The Rock, but found nothing but fan made matches. When The Rock returned Punk was the only reason why I watched wrestling and seeing The Rock return made things interesting. I’ve yet to see a match replicate this energy and hype around it. Icon Vs Icon. I remember being so hyped about this match and it was crazy because wrestling had been going really downhill at this time and as someone who grew up watching wrestling since I was a baby I was in and out with the product around this time. but this match fully brought me back and after this match happened I could never really stop watching wrestling. Even though I’m not a fan of part timers coming back and main eventing/stealing the spotlight from current roster members. Matches like these can be done right and capture that lighting in a bottle like hogan and rock did years prior to 2012. I wish wrestlers today in WWE could be built up as strong and as important so we could get matches like these nowadays.

Literally my favorite match growing up. There was so much I loved about the build up. 1) Yes I know the time they announced it was way too early, but it kinda makes sense in a way. 2) The fight wasn’t being built up every week on raw or smack down which is so genius because it kinda seemed (well at least to me) like they were preparing John cena for the match throughout the year with cm punk, Alberto del Río, Kane, r-truth. Then when the time finally came they actually built the fight up. I personally didn’t like that they teamed up at SS 2011 but hey it’s whatever. 3) The way wwe had ppl decide who to root for. One side was the NEW face of the company who needs to win this fight in order to be who he says he is (John Cena). The other side is the peoples champion, the one who made people fall in love with wwe, and a long awaited ring return (The Rock). 4) Also I know people don’t really pay attention or just don’t care for the promos, but holy hell these promos were great! It felt like this was the last ever match for the company lmao. 5) As good as the build up was the match was great as well. Even tho I was a team cena kid at the time I gotta admit now that I’m much older and aware, the winner was correct. I liked how he John cena lost, but I hate how they booked him after this match. They literally did a Roman reigns (before Roman was there obviously). Still this match to me was amazing.

this one is very sentimental to me, so long story short last wwf/e ppv I had watched was mania in 2004, sometime during 2004 I had stopped watching wrestling, mainly cuz I was 14 then and got more into music and thought wrestling wasn’t cool if I was going to highschool, well fast forward to December 2011, I randomly decided to watch raw, and started back since then, so let’s get to mania in 2012, as far back as 97 to when I stopped in 2004, me and my dad always watched wrestling together, both wcw and wwf, so when I got back into it, we watched again, mania 2012 was our first wrestlemania we watched since 2004, my dad passed away in june 2020, unexpectedly, so needless to say, this mania and that match, very sentimental to me, glad to see you cover it dude

As a Cena fan growing up, I wanted Cena to beat Rock (that obviously didn’t happen until the following Mania). Also, it’s funny how Cena called out the Rock for leaving wrestling to pursue an acting career yet he did the same exact thing a decade later (granted, the Marine movies exist, but that was when Cena was still an active wrestler).

I will never forget this I was 8 years old at the time and I finally got to see two of the biggest stars in wrestling history go at it I had watched all DVD’s of the rock and I had seen cena wrestle on tv and when these two finally went at it I was so excited I couldn’t watch it live but the next day I went to the flea market and bought a copy of it and watched it at my after school program with my friends absolutely nostalgic I’ll never forget the hype that went into this never

To me, the biggest Cena fued was the one against Batista. Those were my two hero’s going at it. I didn’t know who to cheer for. This fued though, I was team Cena. Always. Team Cena 🙏🏼

i was 12/13 during this feud and the biggest john cena fan you could ever meet i idolized him and i hated the rock because of all the stuff he would say about cena lol i took it personally every time but man at the time i knew it was a great feud, a great build up, and an amazing match but looking back at it now we were truly blessed to witness greatness i remember being so sad seeing cena on the ramp looking disappointed after losing i genuinely thought it was the end for cena and that he would never recover from the loss thats how dramatic that match was for me it was like do or die i'll never forget the memories both of them gave us two goats

This match is the highlight of my wrestling childhood. Anticipation was surreal, being the same age as you - I was TEAM BRING IT 100%! Hate on Cena was incredible those days, I used to absolutely hate his childish character back then. Rock winning was a once in a lifetime memory, I live in Europe, so Wrestlemania ended at like 6 in the morning, and straight after it finished I packed my stuff and went to school. I'll never forget the happiness I had that day :D The buildup was amazing, Rock making fun of kid dressed as Cena etc, and the match itself - damn, like you said, I wish I could relieve that.

Being a fan since the late 90s, I was rolling with Team Bring It. We were so fed up with Cena's hot garbage and him insulting our intelligence. When the ref counted Cena down for the 3, I leaped up in joy. A weight was taken off the backs of old head fans like me. Wrestlemania 28 lived up to the hype.

I still remember this Mania. I never really got to watch Raw or SmackDown because my parents had me on some early bedtime bullshit. I really only got to watch TNA because they would let me DVR iMPACT…
But holyyyyy shit this main event was absolutely electric. As a kid I was right at the age where I was starting to like Edge and Jericho more than Cena and Batista. All I had was old DVDs and VHS and seeing The Rock have a big match in my lifetime was so sick. I was hardcore going for Rock and when he won, that was a personal win for me as a kid.
I also remember Jericho vs Punk being a huge dream match for me. Punk was my current favorite and Jericho was at that point the underrated GOAT, it’s everything I could’ve wanted.
I almost forgot about HHH vs Taker too, Jesus Christ. That match was a super fight if there ever was one. Hell in a Cell at WrestleMania was a pipe dream to me as a kid, I never knew about Bossman and Taker with the noose. Everybody knows that crazy near fall too.

The Rock returning to Raw that February where he announced he’d be hosting mania that year got me back into WWE after a long period of me not watching. I think I stopped just as John Cena debuted, so I really didn’t care for the guy, Rock was my hero. Seeing him back in a ring was large in itself but knowing that he’d then main event mania the next year against the biggest draw of the business was unprecedented. I too thought Cena would win the match and shot up from my seat when Rock pinned him clean.
Huge moment. Huge match, and it had Punk vs Jericho for the title. Any other match taking the main event slot from the title match would’ve had an entirely different reaction.

This year it turns 10 years old, wow, I'm so grateful that I was able to watch this live (I skipped school the next day for this), it felt like the biggest thing ever and I watched this with my uncle and brothers and they all wanted The Rock to win and I was the only one wanting Cena and the match was just so hype, every big move, every pinfall, every submission I was on the edge of my seat and always hoping Cena would win but I remember back then I knew who ever did a finisher first in the match normally loses on PPV's, Cena hit the AA and I got even more nervous about him losing since he did his finisher first and I just hoped that the Rock would stay down for a pinfall or pass/tap out in the STFU and he didn't, Cena went for the People's Elbow and got hit with the Rock Bottom, 1, 2, 3, it was over, I was like heartbroken when Cena lost and when I seen him on the ramp with that face and just sitting there lost I just got so sad, the biggest match ever and my favorite wrestler of all time lost, it hurt so bad and then the day after I went to watch the replay and I was hoping Cena would win somehow (I was a kid) but the result was the same (obviously). I wish we could get this back in wrestling but I don't know if we can, two megastars going 1 on 1, "the world was watching", good times

This is easily the biggest match of all time, there will never be another big money match with so much buildup and story. Even audiences had absolutely zero clue on who would win this as it could have gone either way, whereas most other matches these days are quite predictable.
Cena vs Rock 1 is something so special it can never be replicated again.

John Cena is the face of your generation. Austin and Rock were the faces of my generation. I did think it was dope they built this match for a year. WWE is missing the long compelling story telling. The stats that transcend the business. Crazy to think this has been 10 years ago.
Now it’s even ironic that John Cena is now a big name in Hollywood and makes sporadic appearances.

I mean honestly the 29 match was still pretty good had this not been marketed as once in a lifetime I’m sure it’d be viewed totally different but this match is one of the greatest in wrestlemania history
Edit this was my second ever wrestling event live my first being rock’s birthday at raw a year prior and I was 11 and turning 12 a month later and it was the best night ever end of an era and John cena vs rock even Jericho vs punk was an awesome match
