great to see you! insanely good stuff as always. extremely inspiring. given the shape, i wonder if it would be ergonomic and useful to integrate a mouse into the bottom as well, for one handed playing. apparently sony showed off an accessibility accessory for the PS5 at CES again this year so its a topic that continues to be of some genuine interest and importance. your solution is fantastic and with that addition it would serve that market incredibly well. being 3d printed, its also really easy to mirror for left/right handed use. very excited to see what other ideas you've had and very much looking forward to trying it out.

Slick idea. Being a programmer, I'd have went with an Arduino or a Pi Pico there- but this, while there is some work to be done soldering, is pretty slick, all things being equal there.

Something that isn't as good as this but could be worth trying out for some people who don't want to DIY would be the old PS3 Navigation controller. It had a joystick, X and O buttons, a D-Pad, L1, L2 and a Playstation button. They're nowhere near as accessible as a custom build like in the video, but you can pick them up cheap and then use software to make your computer recognise it as an X-input device

I have a keypad right now and the main problem is remembering which keys do what. A keypad where you can put icons on the buttons depending on what game your playing would be magical. My dream keypad would allow this but then would add haptics, analog triggers, and adaptuve resistance to allow you to for example push one button halfway down, the haptics and resistance would tell the finger youve hit halfway, and by pressing through the adaptive barrier allows you to perform the second action. The mac keypads already do this. When you think you're clicking, that's actually haptics causing the sensation a normal clickpad would cause. I think it would be possible to make work on a keypad as well. could be used to adjusting dps on the fly at different levels cooking and firing grenades jump and double jump etc etc etc.
This is such a bloody good thing massive gap in the market spoke to you on email can’t wait for you to build me one really looking forward to using it when we finalise everything keep up the good work
really like the design on this one, love my azeron, but never been a fan of their switch mechanism/layout. supposedly they are going to start selling something like this eventually, but who knows when that will be
With the second unused joystick you cold turn that into binary buttons with some electronic logic or just attach it to a 4-way hat switch and put above the thumb joystick. When the hat reaches its max position, then let the analog signal through, essentially turning it into a binary button click.
I liked the Azeron, but I couldn't quite stand that they used mouse switches. It was super clicky and the way the joints were made had the screws jiggle loose sometimes. I always wanted something with red switches. I have some low profile red switches sitting in a box, but I sold my 3D printer! Guess I'll have to find someone to print lol
just had someone 3d print me this; instead of a ps3 controller I'm using an POWERA Xbox Series controller. If that doesn't work, I'll just us this Emulate an Xbox Controller with Arduino (XInput)
I felt this same way. I bought a used razer Tartarus and modded a true analog stick to it ( its analog stick is a dpad with tactical buttons that break extremely easily.) I added a ps2 analog stick with a raspberry pie and it works just fine. Only downside is it requires 2 usb ports and basic modifications.
Nice project. Amazing work. Even though it would be more expensive… I would have used a Logitech F310. You would have both Xinput and DirectInput with a flip of a switch. Also… even though I don’t own one… some time ago I checked images of it’s PCB and… if I’m not mistaken… it has 2 unused buttons hidden under the gamepad shell. Don’t know if the software detects them or the are disabled by default 😊
I've looked for something almost exactly like this, and come up empty, time and time again. Either it's single inventor such as yourself or a small company who has since gone under with all their products now unavailable for sale. Anything that I CAN find is either extremely expensive boutique hardware or has a 4-way rocker switch where the analog stick should clearly be. Actually, thinking about it this is probably the best implementation of this idea I've seen. Basing the device on a controller allows for something I haven't heard you touch on yet: Steam Input. Since this presents as a controller, you could use Steam Input to remap and modify the keys in a surprising amount of ways, up to and including remapping those controller buttons to keyboard inputs, bringing the idea full circle.
That's one of the biggest strengths of this thing. If the keys were just pure keyboard keys, you couldn't do the fancy stuff like HOLD button or DOUBLE TAP for more actions. But being a PS3 controller, like you said Steam Input is possible, and other programs too.
Ok now what about the right joystick? Maybe make a flightstick, so that way we get much more precise aiming but it registers as just one ps3 controller
i've thought about that too; theoretically if you liked using joystick for the camera that much you could just build two of these, one is a mirror image for the right hand. then you can wire up the controls however you want.
I just woke up and took care of things I needed to do, the whole time thinking about how I can't wait to watch the video I saw the thumbnail for when I woke up... I'm so glad I didn't unsub thinking this channel was dead. And yes, I did buy a mouse and keyboard for my Xbox... And I hate hate hate the keyboard...
I feel the same way about using a controller with fortnite. I recently bought a keyboard joystick and within a couple of days saw an improvement in my mechanics. However, I quickly realised there are way to many binds to remember on keyboard and I don't have the time to grind the game to improve. The best thing about controller is how easy it is to just pick it up and play the game, and the binds are so much simpler in a way as they are all accessible without having to do some crazy finger gymnastics!! The downside is how quickly you can reach a skill ceiling, and having tried different sensitivities, controllers and settings its really difficult to improve. Would love to see a video of how you set the keypad binds up with some gameplay. Keep up the good work. P.s would definitely buy one if you put it into production.

Love this build. Could you do a parts list with the links from the thinks. also, waths changed since v1
Awesome video man. Great design. If I don’t think I can do it after watching and reading more man make me one 💪
Thanks for inspiring my son to try building this.
Awesome work 👏🏼
I've looked for something almost exactly like this, and come up empty, time and time again.
